Post Video: Emma Watson on "Perks of Being a Wallflower", Harry Potter director's cut set

Emma Watson headed to London this week to promote the October 3 release of The Perks of Being a Wallflower in the UK, including Wednesday's red carpet premiere. This morning she spoke to BBC News and BBC Radio 1 about her promotion of the movie, and was even asked about author JK Rowling's comment regarding her considering a 'director's cut' of the Harry Potter books.

Emma also told Glamour UK that she will indeed be reading The Casual Vacancy as it is released this Thursday.

Emma Watson: If anyone’s watching this, make sure you bring tissues with you to the movie.

BBC: How did it feel playing a different person to what everybody knows you for?
Emma:
I was really nervous doing this crazy dance for the Rocky Horror show. We do like a dance routine in it. I realized you become so comfortable doing something, and it was really a stretch for me to play an American girl – particularly such a free spirited and crazy, spontaneous girl. It was really good for me to break out.

You said on [BBC Radio1] this morning that you can’t watch your kissing scenes and you can’t watch the Rocky Horror. Which was the more uncomfortable?
Emma:
Probably the Rocky Horror. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it’s just weird to see me dressing up and being all … I just felt awkward. And the kissing scene with Logan is reasonable tame.

J.K. Rowling said this morning that she’d love to do a director’s cut version of the Harry Potter stuff. Would you consider doing that?
Emma:
That’s so interesting. Sure. She did such an amazing job. She’s too hard on herself. I think they were the way they were meant to be. But, she’s the creator. There’s not much I can say really.
Emma also talked about the release of The Perks of Being a Wallflower with BBC Radio 1's Breakfast hour this morning, with DJ and host Nick Grimshaw, discussing topics of how strange it was to kiss costar Logan Lerman to prepping for her three straight days of promo for the film, including Wednesday night's gala premiere, and an interview on The Jonathon Ross Show. That interview can be heard here beginning 1:45 minutes in; photos of Emma with Grimshaw are below.

B]BBC Radio 1: Who would you wait outside for?
Emma Watson:[/B] Patti Smith.

BBC: About the premiere tonight … is it weird getting out of a car and seeing your face eight stories high?
Emma:
Yes. Well, the nice thing is, after Harry Potter nothing will ever be quite as scary. Nothing can ever be as mental as that. But actually, it’s really nice. We’re a very small film, which this film is that I’m promoting. We’ve been getting quite a lot of attention, which is great.

BBC:] I look horrible today. I would have made the effort. I forgot that it’s all filmed [for the show’s livestream].
Emma:
Why do you think I’m wearing glasses?

BBC: You look good. Strong look. I like it a lot.
Emma:
Thanks!

BBC: Your new film … very intense, very emotional. Did you get emo when you watched it back?
Emma:
I’ve seen the film three times now and I’ve cried every single time. And I was in it so I should now what’s coming. It’s a bit of an emotional roller coaster. It’s very funny for the first half, I would say, and then it just takes this turn. It’s very sad. I think the soundtrack also makes it quite sad. There’s some really beautiful songs on it.

BBC: How was it trying to do the American accent? You went to uni in America.
Emma:
Well I had help from my friends who were at college with me, but I really lost sleep over it. I was very, very concerned about making sure that the American accent was peachy. But I think it’s okay. People have been saying it’s all right.

BBC: Halfway through the film I forgot it was you.
Emma:
Yes! That’s such a good sigh. That means I’m doing my job really well.

BBC: How do you do that? Get into the character of Sam?
Emma:
Well, I worked with a voice coach and did lots of umming and ahhing, and vowel sounds and stuff like that. And then I just really harassed the director, Steve [Chobosky]. I was like, “What is the Olive Garden? Where is this place you keep talking about? I don’t get this joke.” So he just had thousands of emails from me in his in box before we started shooting. I was just quite pedantic really about making sure that I understood everything. And I had Ezra [Miller] and Logan [Lerman], who play the two other guys in the film, and they made sure that all the time I sounded all right.

BBC: What was it like working with them? What were they like off set or when you had downtime?
Emma:
They’re hilarious. Ezra is such good fun. The first time I met him, well actually I say the first time … he wore duck pajamas for the entire shoot, for the duration of the film, and cowboy boots. Very strong look. You think these glasses are a bold statement? He was really going for it. And Logan was just in character a lot. He’s just a really sweet, nice boy. We had such a good time together. We’re all genuinely really close.

BBC: What was it like having to do kissing scenes?
Emma:
It’s really funny. Whenever I watch the film back, there are a few things I can’t watch. I can’t watch the Rocky Horror dance scene really. There’s a moment in the film, not to give too much away, when I basically grab Logan’s hands – he played Charlie – and make him feel my breasts. That was really awkward. Can I say that on the radio? Breasts?

BBC: Yes, that’s medical (laughs).
Emma:
And then also, the moment where we kiss. But he’s so nice. He’s so sweet that it was fine.

BBC: He had to wear quite a revealing outfit for that scene as well.
Emma:
Gold tighty-whities. I have to say, I take my hat off to you, Logan, for doing that. Because he stood in front of a crowd of like 300 people in nothing other than gold tighty-whities. Wow.

BBC: And you had to do some dancing scenes as well. Its’ pushing you as an actress, having to dress up
Emma:
Yeah, it really was. Not just the Rocky Horror; I had to dress up as Susan Sarandon for that, but there’s also a scene where Ezra and I – in the middle of the homecoming dance – move everyone out of the way and we burst into our own special dance routine. We tried to use all the best moments from all of these different dance films. We have the Dirty Dancing lift, and we have the Grease slap, and a little bit of Dancing in the Rain. It was really fun. Definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone. I had to go to Steve once and say, “You have to understand. I’ve just come from playing Hermioine Granger and you’re putting me in corsets, you’re expecting me to dance and it’s stressful – and I’m just letting you know I would not do this for anyone other than you.”

BBC: Where is the one place that you want to go to that you’ve never been to?
Emma:
Istanbul in Turkey. I’d really, really like to go. When I have time off, after November.

BBC: If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Emma:
Heinz Baked Beans with the pork sausages. The pork sausages are the best bit. On toast. I need the toast, too, so really it’s two items.

BBC: Do they like a bean in America?
Emma:
No, they don’t. They’ve got really weird beans that don’t have the nice tomatoey sauce on them.

BBC: Would you rather learn to speak every language in the world or play every instrument ever made?
Emma:
Musical instruments. That would be so awesome.

BBC: What made this film the one as your first venture after Harry Potter?
Emma:
I told my agent, “Look, are you serious? I’m taking my studies very serious. Do not send me anything unless it’s something really special.” And she called me and said, “I’ve got this script. It’s from a book The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and I really think you should read it.” It made me cry and it made me laugh. I read it and I wished someone had given me this book when I was fifteen; when I was going through my English high school experience. I think that’s when you know you want to make a film – when you want to share it with everyone. The minute I read it I wanted to tell everyone about the script. And I wanted everyone to see it. I had that drive and that compulsion to get it made.
