Rupert Grint talks CBGB, The Drummer, Charlie Countryman, Enemy of Man, Harry Potter
Rupert Grint has had a pretty busy filming schedule for 2012. He started off with The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman with Shia LeBouef this spring, and will work back-to-back with Randall Miller and Jody Savin in the biopics CBGB and The Drummer, based on the famous New York punk club and life of Beach Boys' Dennis Wilson, respectively. He also is in talks to star in a film adaptation of William Shakespeare's MacBeth called Enemy of Man, which he may begin shooting later this year, as character Rosse.
SnitchSeeker spoke to Rupert, who is currently in Savannah finishing his first American and on-screen portrayal of The Dead Boys' Cheetah Chrome in CBGB, this Wednesday. The biopic also costars Alan Rickman as the club's owner Hilly Kristal, along with Malin Akerman, Ashley Greene, and Justin Bartha. A photo of Rupert with his shortened Cheetah-style haircut, via SavannahNow, is below.
Rupert opened up about why he took on the roles of Chrome in CBGB, Stan Shapiro in The Drummer, and how quickly he agreed to take part in the Charlie Countryman project. Rupert was vague about future projects he may have in line, but definitely is looking into many more roles in addition to those he is confirmed for or attached to this year.
Of course, Rupert commented about his life in Harry Potter, though related to when the news of the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks were mentioned to him, those set to be built at Universal theme parks in Japan and Los Angeles. All of that, and what he thought of J.K. Rowling's praise of him as an actor from the interview released by Warner Bros today, can be read below.
SnitchSeeker: How’s the weather down there [in Savannah]?
Rupert Grint: It’s really hot. It’s humid.
SnitchSeeker: This [CBGB] is your first American film. Talk about the experience.
Rupert: It’s been a very good one actually. The first I've worked in America and playing to Americans – both firsts in this film. I’m learning a lot. It’s fun. I’m really enjoying it. Working with Alan again is great, it’s great to see him in a completely different role. It’s fun.
SnitchSeeker: Why’d you take the CBGB role in the first place?
Rupert: The whole punk thing has always inspired me. I love the music, the clothes and just the whole style of it was just something I’ve always loved. I don’t really know a lot about CBGB, the club. I don’t really know much about it, but preparing for this, did research on it and read about it and it’s extraordinary. It was great.
SnitchSeeker: How did you prepare to play Cheetah [Chrome]?
Rupert: That’s also something else that’s new to me: playing someone who’s still living. We had to watch the trailers. It’s very strange. It also puts a little pressure on you because you want to get it right and do him justice. At some point, I’ve watched all the videos of him and there’s a really good interview they did. I’ve watched that several times.
SnitchSeeker: Have you gotten to meet him?
Rupert: Yeah, he’s been on set a few times. He’s a great guy, really nice. It’s great to have him on set and telling stories. I was quite nervous about meeting him at first, but it’s been fun. And he’s happy, so it’s good.
SnitchSeeker: Did you feel more comfortable working with a familiar face again, with Alan Rickman?
Rupert: Yeah, that was the other thing that really made me want to do this was getting a chance to work with Alan again because he’s always been one of my favorites whenever I worked with him on Potter. He had had such a great presence and he was just always really nice and it was great to work with him. I thought it’d be fun to work with him again in a completely different environment. It’s been fun.
SnitchSeeker: What’s it been like doing the American accents against each other?
Rupert: (laughs) It’s good. With me, it’s easy ‘cause Cheetah used to joke and stuff, and used to mumble a lot. I can hide any of the imperfect American sound with just mumbling.
SnitchSeeker: I need a sample. Can you give me an American accent sample?
Rupert: I can say I’ve been watching his video constantly. When I’m on set, I always pop in and watch it and almost mimic it. Um … I’m trying to think of my line. I think it’ll be a surprise. I think you should wait.
SnitchSeeker: The same people who are doing CBGB are doing The Drummer. Did that have anything to do with your taking on the CBGB role, since you got The Drummer first?
Rupert: Yeah, I met Randy [Miller, director] and Jody [Savin, screenwriter] originally for The Drummer role, which was supposed to be first. I’d already known about the CBGB film, they made me aware of it, and of Cheetah Chrome. I was always going to both but in a different order. They’re great, I really like Randy and Jody. They’re really cool to work with. I’m looking forward to The Drummer. That should be fun as well.
SnitchSeeker: So you planned from months ago that you were going to do both films?
Rupert:The Drummer was supposed to be first and this [CBGB] was going to be a lot further down the line.
SnitchSeeker: Are you glad to try your American accent with this one first?
Rupert: Yeah, this is a good one to test the water, I think. A bit of a lark to get to do this one first.
SnitchSeeker: Why did you take on The Drummer role?
Rupert: I really liked the script. It was a really interesting story, Dennis Wilson. I’m a Beach Boy fan, as well. Again, it’s a very different kind of character. It was always something that attracted me.
SnitchSeeker: What in particular about the character did you like, or are you looking forward to playing?
Rupert: I think he’s quite a vulnerable character. There’s a really cool scene in it with him and Dennis. Everyone around my character is in this drug-fueled haze and he’s just quite clean cut, innocent person. It’ll be fun to do.
SnitchSeeker: That’s the total opposite of Cheetah Chrome.
Rupert: Yeah (laughs). Definitely.
SnitchSeeker: Can you tell me about The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman? Because that came out of nowhere? Can you tell me about the film and your character in it?
Rupert: Yeah, that was really cool. It was really quick, what happened. It just came up, went straight out to Romania. It should again be quite a drug-fuelled story about Shia LaBeouf's character loses his mum and she tells him in this weird hallucination that he should go to Bucharest and find himself. So he goes to Bucharest and when he checks into a hostel, he meets my character Carl and Luke, who’s played by James Buckley, and we take him out. We go out and do drugs and I have a bit of a medical situation.
SnitchSeeker: Really?
Rupert: Yeah, I won’t give away too much. It’s quite a shocking role.
SnitchSeeker: Is this another American role, or British?
Rupert: No, I’m British in this one. Again, it’s a very different character.
SnitchSeeker: You have a pretty full year. Anything else in the pipeline? I’m looking at your IMDb page right now and there’s something called Enemy of Man. Do you know anything about that?
Rupert: Yeah, that’s going to happen by the end of this year, or further out in the future. It’s a MacBeth adaptation. It’ll be fun to try a bit of Shakespeare.
SnitchSeeker: Have you read the script already?
Rupert: Yeah, it’s quite faithful to Shakespeare. It's a period, kind of epic version with horses and Scotland. I think it’ll be really cool.
SnitchSeeker: Can you tell me more about your role of Rosse?
Rupert: He’s kind of in development, but it’s a cool part. I get to ride a horse, and it’s going to be quite gory. A gory film, so I’m looking forward to that.
SnitchSeeker: Can I ask you about Eddie the Eagle? What’s up with it?
Rupert: I’ve still got faith in it. It’s been a long time now, but it just takes awhile to get everything in order. The script keeps changing, getting people involved. I still think it’s a great story and a fun character. He’s such a strange guy but he had so much guts and courage. So hopefully that’ll be filmed.
SnitchSeeker: Anything else in the pipeline?
Rupert: A few things I’m looking at. It’s still a case of waiting for the right thing, really. I’m not in a rush to do everything at once. Just pick from some roles and just go with the flow and enjoy it.
SnitchSeeker: We’re looking forward to all these roles you’re about to take on.
Rupert: Cool, yeah. Great.
SnitchSeeker: Can I slip in a Harry Potter question for a second?
Rupert: Yes.
SnitchSeeker: I’m sure you’ve heard about all the extra theme parks that are going to open. There’s going to be a new one in Los Angeles and one in Japan. Do you have any thoughts about that?
Rupert: Sorry, they’re opening a Wizarding World in Japan?
SnitchSeeker: There’s going to be one in Japan and there’s going to be a third one in L.A. at Universal Studios.
Rupert: Yeah, that’s great news. We always have so much fun when we go there. They’ve done such a great job, so it’s great other countries can enjoy that. They’re doing really well, as well. We always go in there and have fun. It’s something I’ve always really strongly supported.
SnitchSeeker: Did you know they are expanding the one in Orlando? They’re making Diagon Alley in London down there, and the Hogwarts Express – that’s a rumor.
Rupert: Yeah I did hear about that. Great! The more, the better!
SnitchSeeker: Are you going to visit all of them?
Rupert: Yeah, I think I would enjoy doing that. It's a fun place to be, gives me a bit of a taste of the old days.
SnitchSeeker: One last thing. This new interview came out with J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves and they just could not stop praising you. Kloves said that you were brilliant and underestimated as an actor and J.K. Rowling said that you were a genius as an actor. What do you think of that?
Rupert: Wow.
SnitchSeeker: I can throw the audio up right now, I’m not making this up.
Rupert: Well, that’s amazing. I don’t know. I’m not sure I agree, but that’s very nice. I miss that film and miss being on set with everyone. I don’t know that I’ll ever be on anything quite the same as that. Now it’s just memories. I’m doing new things and I’m enjoying that a lot.
SnitchSeeker: How much time do you have left filming CBGB?
Rupert: It’s a really quick shoot. I’m here until the end of the week. It’s a massive cast list. So many different people coming in and out. I think it’s going to be a fun film.
SnitchSeeker: Do you have more scenes in addition to doing concerts for the club?
Rupert: Yeah, the Dead Boys are quite a prominent feature of the club and were good friends with Alan Rickman’s character Hilly. He becomes our manager and a lot of the story is about how he got our first record signing and the rise and fall of The Dead Boys, and it ended badly. There’s some interesting things I’ve been enjoying rather than being on stage. Performing is my favorite part. I’ve always wanted to be in a band. So it’s really good.

The entire East Coast is freakin soupy and hot as you put it I mean HOT...anyway I cant wait for more Rupert and Emma movies...they really have moved away from their Potter roles which is good-I mean to make people see you as another role after being seen as that character for 8 movies is not easy. But I know they will be able to do an AWESOME and AMAZING job with this task

And I think you guys in Maryland have hotter temps that Florida right now. Can't wait to see all of these actors broaden their horizons.
Omg all of these new projects have gotten me really excited! Especially NDCC as Shia and James Buckley are his friends (all three of them are perfect IMO!) And he has medical problems. That'll be funny and interesting. What do you guys reckon the problems are?
Bur I've got to admit, I really do not Like his new hair for CBGB. Like really, dont like it. Am I the only one?
