J.K.R's rise to success -

Summary:

Article:

Investor's Buisness Daily has this article titled "Rowling's Success No Sorcery" :

Quote:
When an unknown emerges with an exciting idea, the phrase that often gets applied is "overnight success story." For Joanne Kathleen Rowling, "overnight" meant years of hard work and perseverance.

Quote:
"Her first draft may be like another writer's fifth draft," said Arthur A. Levine, vice president and editorial director of Arthur A. Levine Books, which publishes the Harry Potter series for Scholastic. "She puts so much hard work into it before it ever gets turned in."
Quote:
"What Rowling is able to do is synthesize all her influences really well," said Philip Nel, an assistant professor of English at Kansas State University who teaches Potter to students. "She's got the classics influences, like (C.S. Lewis') 'The Chronicles of Narnia' where there's a chosen one, a chosen child. Also mystery novels, where each book is a mystery, you get clues along the way and you want to know what's going to happen at the end.

"Then you've got the boarding school novel -- 'Tom Brown's School Days' is the most famous -- where a kid goes off to boarding school and has to negotiate life on his own. Harry Potter is the way she brings all of that together."

Quote:
"She's very aware that these books have a place in history," said Levine. "It would be sad if anything was rushed or less than we wanted it to be to meet a deadline. It's more important that it gets done right. The other side of having a book that's very popular is that it's read with great scrutiny. You have a responsibility to get the book out to an eager group of fans, but even more so to put out the best book possible."

Quote:
Rowling consistently thinks three or four moves ahead when sketching out a character or scene. Details that may seem innocuous or out of place in one book often become vital for a future installment, says Nel. An offhand remark about a room in Harry's castle-based school becomes a central meeting place for a secret order of students in a later book.
Quote:
"I do remember there was one character in particular who seemed to be coming across much more harshly than I thought Jo intended," Levine said. "I cited places where I felt that was coming across. In a situation like that she might say, 'That's a surprise to me. Let me take another look.' At the same time, she's very strong. She knows where things are and where she wants them to be."

And this [Room of Requirement] could be that place in Half-Blood Prince that Harry doesn't know the importance of yet..

Wonder who that was... :whisle:

Yeah i wonder who it could be also. The first person that seemed to pop to my mind was Hermione. She can be pretty strict sometimes. I dont think that JKs trying to give that message across, Maybe just that Hermione knows whats best for everyone and can be a bit forceful in doing it. She did also mention that it is a female.

^^ exactly that's why i don't mind too much when we have a long wait for the next harry potter book. of course everyone would love to get their hands on it now but the reason why we can't get it is because rowling wants to make sure we're not disappointed

I'm glad she is not rushing through the words

I always admired how everything on her books fits so nicely together Well, the clues and stuff! Like when you find out that the Twins know the castle better in Book 3, it was actually hinted in Book 1.

I love the detail JK puts into her books and the care she takes. I reread the 4th book the other day and I was surprised to see that the Lovegoods were mentioned at the very beginning! She likes to sneak little bits of detail in! Definatly shouldn't rush the books, but I still would rather them sooner than later lol.

An interesting article, I agree with it comlpetely, JK does put alot of effort into the books to make every single sentence sound right. Roll on HBP!

I think that the story behind JK's success is great. She went from getting out of a bad divore and was a single mom, living on welfare to being one of the richest people in the world. I think that's great.

I agree, her detail and her gift to leave hidden hints is what makes her such a great writer and a pleasure to read. I would rather the books be how she intended them to be in her eyes, to be correct and perfect, even if it means we have to wait longer - as someone else on here said, it's better to be patient than disappointed!

Yea, she goes into detail about every little thing, which is a good thing and then we can get good theories going and all that good stuff. I would definately rather her have the book perfect to her and wait longer, but than I get too anxious and start getting antsy. I would say that a month beofer it comes out, I get antsy beyond belief. I read all the books, do all the research, everything. I TURN INTO A HARRY POTTER MADMAN!!! Basically, I'm saying, its awesome!
