James & Oliver Phelps share thoughts on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child plays
SnitchSeeker chatted with James and Oliver Phelps during the opening week of Universal Studios Hollywood's The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where the two discussed what the loved about the new attraction, what they think of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and what they may have coming up next.
The two particularly had the most interesting reaction to the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child plays opening this summer... especially James. That's something to be seen in the video below.
SnitchSeeker: So, how’s the second day [at Universal Studios Hollywood] been for you guys?
James: It’s been good.
Oliver: Yeah, it’s been really fun. We’ve been out to explore a bit more, as well, now that - yesterday yesterday we were here in the evening – so being around in the daytime is quite cool.
SnitchSeeker: What’s difference do you notice between day and night in the park?
Oliver: The lighting’s obviously different. I think in the nighttime you don’t see all the snow and everything on the rooftops, whereas in the day, you do. But in the evening, you see Hogwarts Castle all lit up.
James: What’s great as well is that they’ve also taken into account how the light’s going to hit it throughout the day. Whereas when you’re filming it’s just – there is a lot of detail – but this is really surrounded. So, just looking at it now, you can see how the snow’s twinkling from the sun. It’s really, really smart.
SnitchSeeker: Talk about the 3-D for Forbidden Journey – how it compares to the original ride in Orlando.
James: I guess it’s just that the technology’s moved even further, because the one in Orlando is still state-of-the-art. They’ve just added to it now. With the goggles you’re more immersed than you were before. We did it yesterday and you forget that there’s everyone – loads of people – on the ride with you, you feel like it’s just you going on that experience.
SnitchSeeker: Are you guys coming out in 3-D on the screen?
Oliver: I don’t know, actually – at the very end?
James: I guess, kind of. It looks sharp. It’s very crisp.
SnitchSeeker: What would you like to see expanded into the Wizarding World. We have Hogsmeade in three different places, Diagon in Orlando, what would you like to see personally?
Oliver: The only thing they probably haven’t really done is a Quidditch-style thing. How they would do that, I don’t know. I’m sure these guys have got something up their sleeves to just expand it and go with something more.
James: I guess you could take people sky diving. Have a [Quidditch] game sky diving and land in the world. That would be a cool thing.
SnitchSeeker: So what can Harry Potter fans look forward to in Hollywood compared to Orlando and Japan?
Oliver: I think because inf your mindset, you’re already in the world of movies [at Universal Studios Hollywood]. When they come here [to Hogsmeade] it is like being in a movie itself, so you’ve got that nostalgic link to it. And it’s just fantastic to come around and look at it. It seems slightly wider – I don’t know if that’s just me. But there’s a lot more you can do here [at Universal Studios Hollywood] as well, which is really cool.
SnitchSeeker: What do you think of the next generation of the Wizarding World – the movies, the books? Let’s start with Fantastic Beasts, are you excited for that? What are your thoughts about that?
James: Yeah, I’m excited just to see what happened in another part of the world. When we were filming the books, it was all just Harry’s perspective. It’s still pretty critical to the whole Wizarding World, but it’s quite nice to see another part of it.
SnitchSeeker: So what would be your advice to the actors, like Eddie Redmayne and the rest of his co-stars, coming with that massive fandom?
James: He’s a huge star anyway, so he’s going to be used to all that kind of stuff. But it’s a different kind of fan base, as well. So if the fans are half as nice to him as they are to us, he’s going to be very, very happy, I’m sure.
SnitchSeeker: Talking about book eight now, it’s a sequel so unfortunately Fred won’t be in there …
James: Yeah, I’ll see ya! (gets up to leave)
SnitchSeeker: No! What are you excited to see in the play itself, with the characters growing?
Oliver: I don’t know, really. Obviously it’s set later on, so you can see where they’re going. It would be great if Harry was still involved with … maybe he became a strong investor into the Weasleys Wizard Wheezes brand and they’ve expanded it elsewhere. Maybe Ron has joined the family business or something like that. That would be quite cool. But I’ve got no idea what to expect. I’m really excited to get to see it.
SnitchSeeker: They might recast George with another actor, so what would be your advice to him, or your thoughts on that?
Oliver: Don’t do that. Get me. Yeah, that’d be it, honestly.
SnitchSeeker: What is your advice to those actors, as well, because they’re going to be taking on such iconic roles?
Oliver: I think just enjoy it, really. You’ve got to get in character to enjoy the whole thing.
SnitchSeeker: Any extra advice you’d like to give the actors, the fans as we come into a new huge wave of Harry Potter and the Wizarding World?
James: I don’t have advice, really, like that. I think what’s cool is that everyone has their own view on the world. It’s not like everyone’s being told you must think this about this character, and that about that character. As long as everyone just takes their own personal beliefs forward with it, I think maybe that’s part of the success of the series is because everyone can relate to a certain character or a moment. So I think everyone can just keep doing what they’re doing because it’s been working so far.
SnitchSeeker: Do you guys have any new projects coming up?
Oliver: We’ve been lucky to be traveling a lot with this type of stuff. We’re in town to do some stuff over here, as well - nothing coming out in the near future. There’s always stuff going on in the background.
