| | J.K.Rowling talks depression
In a new, honest & open interview with The Times, J.K.Rowling talks about her battle with depression and admits to having contemplated suicide in the past. Following the split with her first husband she was prescribed cognitive behavioural therapy. Quote:
“Mid-twenties life circumstances were poor and I really plummeted,” said Rowling. “The thing that made me go for help . . . was probably my daughter. She was something that earthed me, grounded me, and I thought, this isn’t right, this can’t be right, she cannot grow up with me in this state.”
Rowling said her usual GP was away, and the replacement doctor sent her away. “She said, ‘If you ever feel a bit low, come and speak to the practice nurse’ and dismissed me.”
Rowling added: “We’re talking suicidal thoughts here, we’re not talking ‘I’m a little bit miserable’.
Two weeks later I had a phone call from my regular GP who had looked back over the notes . . . She called me back in and I got counselling through her.
“She absolutely saved me because I don’t think I would have had the guts to go and do it twice.”
Quote:
“I have never been remotely ashamed of having been depressed. Never,” she said in an interview with Adeel Amini, 22, for a student magazine at Edinburgh University.
“What’s to be ashamed of? I went through a really rough time and I am quite proud that I got out of that.”
Jo's frank words have been welcomed by Celia Richardson, campaigns director of the Mental Health Foundation, who said: “JK Rowling is a wonderful role model and it’s brilliant she has chosen to talk about this.” |

There is nothing to be ashamed of, one can't help what they feel. It's good to know there are people out there, wonderful fantastic people and role models, willing to admit that they go through things like that, like everyday people.
Good for you, Jo. |

that is really good that she came out with that sause its hard to do that. Plus it offers a little ray of sunshine to others battling with this horrible disease.

JK must be a really brave woman to get out of depression then be able to talk about it in an interview! I'd never do that.

Wow. I never know she suffered with the depression, let alone had thought about suicide. It's great that she is talking about it; hopefully, it will help others suffering with it to get help. She's very brave and definately someone to look up to.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Kaitlynn Hopsisk Second Year | Hope is the only thing stronger than fear. I know how she feels. Depression is a hard thing to bounce back from. It took five years for my depression stage to end and i thought about suicide but I never tried to commit it. I'm Glad she was able to overcome it. She really is an insperational person.

Jo Rocks!!! To come out and openly tell the world things like that takes guts... She's an example to us all that even if things are going bad keep reaching for the stars and one day we might just touch them.... x

Been there and done that, and it's a feeling I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies. You feel so isolated and alone, you feel like nobody else could possibly understand what you're going through, even though in the back of your head you know it's not true. The panic attacks, the feeling you'll never see the llight at the end of the tunnel. I'm glad she was able to pull through it. For some of us tho, medicine is the only thing to control it. Thanks to my mother's lovely genes, almost every women on her side of the family takes paroxitene, mom and myself included. (I'm glib, Tom Cruise, deal with it!) It's a shame not everyone has the support system they need to help...and believe me, it seriously helps.
