Post 'Goblet of Fire' choreographer talks dancing

Dance Spirit magazine, in its newest edition, features an interview Wayne McGregor, one of the choreographers who worked on 'Goblet of Fire'. The scan can be viewed here.

Quote:
Rather than teaching a classic tango or waltz, he worked closely with director Mike Newell and composer Patrick Doyle to invent something new and slightly twisted. "I wanted to make dances that you would recognise, but were a little bizarre ... very Harry Potter."
He also mentions that the tango between Neville & Ginny was cut out of the movie.

I think Ginny should have more parts. She's becoming a main character in the later books so she should at least build up rather than take the limelight suddenly. It would have been fun to watch a tango scene! Perhaps they'll have a deleted scenes section when the DVD is released.

I can't wait to see the dancing, especially when Harry and Ron dance - their expressions in the stills are hilarious! I'm also especially looking forward to the dancing lesson scene - Ron's face in the trailer! "Where?!"

Well, to be fair Ginny's part in GoF is really short, and tptb seem to think that anything that isn't extremely necessary and isn't part of the 'backbone' of the story can be cut off. I mean they got rid of S.P.E.W, - i can't say i'm sorry for this, to me that spew stuff seemed like such a waste of time in the books - Dobby, Winky, and it seems the QWC part is very short, and i bet if they didn't need it because of what happens with the death eaters, the dark mark, and because they needed it to introduce Viktorious they would have cut it too. They've never used Peeves, Wood doesn't make his guest appearance. Just be glad you get any Ginny *at all*.
Plus i'm kind of glad they cut the tango, i hate it when they change characters feelings. Ginny didn't enjoy herself with Neville, she went with him because as she said so herself, she couldn't have gone to the ball otherwise. And she had a horrible night from what we saw *in the book*, i very much doubt poor Neville can dance to save his life. So Neville as the suave expert tango dancer spinning Ginny on the dance floor would've been extremely non-cannon, so i wasn't looking forward to that scene. Instead of trying to go for the overkill, wasting time shooting a tango scene they didn't use anyway, they should just have stuck to the book, and shown Neville stepping on Ginny's toes. And Ginny feeling miserable because she missed the chance to go with Harry, that would've been cannon.

I agree that they cut it in the interest of time. But also in the interest of Plot, I should imagine--whatever doesn't carry the plot forward (no matter how funny, cute, moving, whatever) should be cut when one is trying to trim the fat in any story. I'm sure this holds even more true in a movie based on such a long book.

haha...i agree. seems kinda weird that they have choreographed dances, but it doesn't matter. the director did his own thing. hope they include N/G doing the tango in the deleted scenes. that'd be so awesome.

I didn't even BOTHER TO read this report till now, and I found something great:

Quote:
"Daniel has to rehearse around his filming schedule, which was crazy, and he [danced] it brilliantly - a natural"

ah!! At least he is not that bad, I knew it since the NY after party reports, the girls said that he had rhythm when Dancing with Emma last year...wow what more can I ask for!!

That was a great article! It is a little disappointing to know that they cut Neville and Ginny out. I would have liked to see Neville ballroom dance. Oh, well, I'm sure we'll see our other favorite couples sweeping each other off their feet! I can't wait!
