| | Evanna Lynch, Devon Murray talk future projects, Fantastic Beasts, Harry Potter play
SnitchSeeker got a chance to sit down with actors Evanna Lynch and Devon Murray on the back patio of The Three Broomsticks at Universal Orlando during A Celebration of Harry Potter late last month. The pair discussed their latest projects, J.K. Rowling’s upcoming Harry Potter play and film series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and what note the author scribbled into Devon’s copy of Tales of Beedle the Bard. Quote: SnitchSeeker: Evanna, you just finished filming Dynamite: A Cautionary Tale. Can you tell us about your role?
Evanna Lynch: Yeah. It's a true story. It's based on a man, Max Weinstein, who was from a really nice family. He was young and smart and charismatic and he had his whole future ahead of him, then drugs took him. He became a heroin addict. It's about the double life he lives - the seedy underworld with this life with the drugs, and also he gets involved in the porn industry when it was very illegal, and then he has this other life with his family. I play his wife. First I'm his high school sweetheart - we meet at 16. And then Theresa - that's my character - Theresa, she becomes pregnant. She becomes trapped in this marriage, in this life that she never wanted. Because she's a really good girl, but he's out of control, and she also doesn't know. It was a super role. I had a New Jersey accent. (laughs) I was a Jersey girl. It was a very quick shoot. It was only three weeks and I loved it. It was different from anything I'd done, as well, like I had a birth scene. They were always tossing kids onto me because we'd do like stages. It was over a span of seven years so I had kids when they were young and kids when they were two, and then they were five. So there were all these kids and I never worked with kids before, and never played a mom, so that was very different. SnitchSeeker: When do you think it will come out?
Evanna: Probably late this summer. SnitchSeeker: G.B.F. just came out. It's kind of like Mean Girls. When you guys were on the set, did you think this might become a cult classic someday?
Evanna: Yeah, well they really wanted it that way. Darren Stein, the director, he directed Jawbreaker, which is sort of a cult teen movie, and he does reference Mean Girls a lot and Heathers. He took inference from a lot of those movies. But I think they felt, Darren and the writer George [Northy], they really felt that there was a gap in the teen movie market for teen gay movies. They'd never had gay lead role, lead actor. So yeah, they wanted to do that because they are actually both gay, as well as they love the Clueless, the Mean Girls, the Heathers. They felt that, "That's not MY high school experience," and they wanted to put a little bit of that into the film. And maybe make it a bit more wacky, as well. SnitchSeeker: Devon, do you have any projects coming up?
Devon Murray: Yeah. When I fly back from here I've gotta fly back to the U.K. I've got a new pilot that starts. It's a comedy and I'll play one of the lead characters, which is pretty cool. It's on the same basis as Father Ted back in Ireland, so it's a real tongue in cheek. SnitchSeeker: What's the name of it?
Devon: I can't give you the name, unfortunately. Evanna: Tell her about your workout. Devon: I've got a crazy workout, but I've got a six pack. I've got to be really, really fit. SnitchSeeker: Can you tell us about your character at all?
Devon: No, I really can't say a whole lot about it. SnitchSeeker: Do you know when it's going to start?
Devon: It starts in June. We start filming in June. SnitchSeeker: And it's a TV show?
Devon: A TV show for the U.K. SnitchSeeker: What do you both think of this new Harry Potter play that's going to come out?
Devon: Yeah, I'm really excited about that. Evanna: I always enjoyed the scenes with the Dursleys. They were so mean to Harry but they were also so funny. I think that's when it's set, isn't that right? His life with the Dursleys? I'd like to see young Harry growing up and little hints that he's a wizard and how he dealt with those. Even that scene with the snake in the zoo was so funny and crazy. What would you do if a snake started talking to you and you let it free? I don't know! I think there's a lot of chance for comedy, and more exploration of Harry's character. SnitchSeeker: And what about the new Fantastic Beasts film series? Are you excited for that?
Evanna: I have to say we know nothing about it. Devon: We haven't a clue. Evanna: Genuinely, I found out when everyone else found out. I was completely stumped and thrilled. I can't wait. I'm just excited because there is a connection for Luna and Newt Scamander. I want to see what kind of person he is. And I'm excited to see the wizarding world set in America, because Americans love it. You can see that they're really big supporters of it, and I think they've always bemoaned the fact that they can't audition for Harry Potter roles. So now they can. SnitchSeeker: Who do you think would make a great Newt Scamander?
Evanna: I don't even want to attempt ... I've no idea. SnitchSeeker: We figure he's in his twenties.
Evanna: I really haven't given much thought to it. I want it to be someone we don't know. I've heard people say, "Oh, David Tennant, he's played in Doctor Who. Yeah, he's cool, he's quirky and everything but I want it to be somebody who's not an icon for some other series .. Devon: Somebody fresh faced. Evanna: ... because he's such a unique character and he has to have such an eccentric mind to discover all these creatures and be so passionate about them. So, I hope it's just someone new. SnitchSeeker: There will be a couple more Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks opening in Japan and then in Hollywood. Do you have any interest in going to openings for those?
Evanna: One hundred percent. Devon: Definitely. Evanna: I love Japan. Devon: Yes, Japan is just insane. Evanna: Yes, please ask us, Warner Brothers. (both laugh) SnitchSeeker: Devon, do you still jump horses?
Devon: I do. Because of Harry Potter I had to stop horse riding when I was fifteen. So we bought a stud farm in Ireland. We've been building on that over the last ten, eleven years. Thank God now it's getting bigger and better. I took a step back for awhile because I wanted to get back into acting, but it'll always be a huge part of my life. SnitchSeeker: Have you ever been injured?
Devon: Thank God, touch wood, not really too bad. I've had like bad bruises, but never broken a bone or anything like that. Actually no, my worst one was when we had a three year old and he was in getting broke and he reared up and landed on top of me. But the poor horse was more afraid than I was. He just stopped right in front of me. My mum tried to lead him away but he wouldn't move. A man told me to stay down. I didn't stay down. I jumped up and led the horse in. I'd never seen a horse shaking like that before in my life. I felt sorry for the poor little lad. SnitchSeeker: Evanna, last year you did Houdini. Do you have an interest in doing any more stagework?
Evanna: Yes, definitely. I would love to do another play. It was hard, but it's nice to be able to experience and I really enjoyed the whole aspect of having a whole month to explore a character. With film, like say with Dynamite, I found out I was doing it a week before. You have to learn about the sixties, you have to learn an accent and backstory and everything in a few days. So I really enjoyed the luxury of having a whole month to just mess up and get to know the character. It didn't matter if I made a fool of myself. Being on stage, you felt you knew the character more. I almost felt like, "Wow, I need to do this for every film project I do from now on," because it's so much better when you rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. I did also find the whole audience thing a bit weird because I've always done film for so many years, and not any theatre. I liked it being private, not worrying about what other people think of me. So I did find, sometimes, I was worrying about what the audience was thinking So I think I have a lot to learn from theatre, and I'd love to do more. I'd love to do the West End, one day. SnitchSeeker: And Broadway?
Evanna: Yes! I would love to be on Broadway. As a stage actor, you've more responsibility. A lot more rests on you because they can't edit it. You're not protected by a dozen layers of editing and other people, other officials. It's you and the audience. So I think that was scary, and it was scary for me at first, but I love thrills. And that's a thrill. SnitchSeeker: And you can dance, too. We've seen you. We've seen video.
Evanna: Oh my God, there is a video online, isn't there? It's awful. Devon: Is there really? Evanna: Yeah, I was fourteen and fancied myself as a jazz dancer. I love dancing. I'd love someday to do a musical. SnitchSeeker: Can you sing?
Evanna: Not really. I mean, I can stay on tune, but nobody hears me with my squeaky voice. People are like, "What'd you say?" SnitchSeeker: Was that a problem in the play?
Evanna: No, I worked on it. And also, with Harry Potter, I was so used to it. It was part of my character to be soft spoken and they loved that. They would even put a microphone in my hair to pick it up. Everything was like, I didn't have to think about it. Whereas for [the play] I did really have to work on that. Hitting the back wall, that kind of thing. It's just another technique to learn. SnitchSeeker: Devon, have you ever done any plays or would you consider doing any?
Devon: I only ever did them as a child in Ireland - nothing big or fancy. It was just the acting school that I went to, they had an end of the year play and that's all I've ever really done. I had to sing. I used to always sing for the Artful Dodger in Oliver Twist. That was always my character every year. SnitchSeeker: So you can sing?
Devon: Yeah, I used to be a great little singer when I was younger, but then my voice broke. Evanna: Then he started smoking. Devon: Then I started smoking and my voice was really, really deep. It was horrible. But I don't smoke anymore. I quit on my twenty-fifth birthday. I said, "When I'm twenty-five, my whole life is going to change." I was going to be healthy. I wasn't going to die when I was fifty - because in my family, the majority of them all live to be about fifty then pop their plugs. So I said I wanted to change that in my family. Evanna: What age are you now? Devon: Twenty-five. So I'm off smokes three months. Evanna: Oh, wow. How do you find it? Devon: I love it. Evanna: Jo [Rowling] would be so proud. She used to always say to you to quit smoking. Devon: Yeah, and remember for the Beedle the Bard, was it? Evanna: Yeah. Devon: We went to Scotland, and she wrote in the book, "Stay off those smokes." Evanna: Yeah, she did! Devon: And I went out and had a smoke. Evanna: And you went out and had a smoke? Devon: Yeah. Evanna: Well, I think you should write to her and tell her you've quit. Devon: I will.

Great interview!
And we know for a fact that Evanna is going to be in this movie, unless Warner Brothers was joking when they replied to her tweet and sais it sounded like a great idea for her to be in.

And I have heard many people saying that her voice would be good for some creatures too.
