| | Emma Watson talks life as Hermione Granger in Harry Potter films with US Vogue
Emma Watson spoke about her erstwhile life as Hermione Granger in the massive Harry Potter series in a new lengthy feature in US Vogue. In the article, the actress broke down how her real life and Leavesden life intertwined into one, and how she tried to break free of sorts to pursue a higher education, as well as other endeavours like working with People Tree and Burburry fashion lines. With quotes from Daniel Radcliffe, producer David Heyman, and director David Yates on working with Emma and watching her grow as a person and actress, the full article can be read here.
Of particular note is the fact that Emma will be transferring out of Brown University, and, according to the article, going to a school closer to her home in England. Current rumours state that she will attend Oxford University in the fall, but that has not been confirmed by Emma or her representatives at the present time. Quote:
I have felt for the last ten years I have had this battle; I’ve been fighting so hard to have an education. It’s been this uphill struggle,” she says, clenching her hands as she speaks. “I was Warner Bros.’ pain in the butt. I was their scheduling conflict. I was the one who made life difficult.”
Finally, Emma took the brave step of announcing that she would not renew her contract for the last two films unless changes were made to accommodate her desire to go to university. Warner Bros. agreed to do everything humanly possible, and, she says, “I just realized at one point that I can’t fight everything. I have to move in the direction of it—and go with it.”
Quote:
Emma grew close to the head of makeup, Amanda Knight, and would while away the hours experimenting in the makeup trailer. “That was my playground. I would sit and play with lipsticks, foundations, and eye shadows; and every now and then Amanda would let me do the extras’ face paint for the Quidditch matches.”
“Hermione is so close to who I am as a person that I’ve never really had to research a role,” she says. “I’m literally rediscovering what it means to be an actress.”
Quote:
“She is really, really bright,” says Heyman. “She is curious and interested in everything: in fashion, culture, and literature. She questioned things more than Dan and Rupert. There were things that she needed to figure out for herself.”
Quote:
“As the role of Hermione became more interesting,” says David Yates, the director of the last four Potter films, “Emma became more engaged. She is an incredibly intuitive and instinctive actor. She can dig deep to find an emotion and bring it to the scene.”
But, insists Yates, “she hasn’t had a role yet to show how she can really shine. There is a very serious and interesting acting brain in there that will surprise everybody.”
Yates’s most vivid memory of Emma is watching her suddenly let go of her steely professionalism and for once just be young and free. They were filming a death scene from Hallows Part 2 on a freezing-cold beach in Wales. The actors were miserable, especially Emma, who hates the cold and dislikes getting wet even more.
But out of nowhere, he recalls, “she ran into the icy water and stood there, holding herself against the waves with her arms outstretched, just laughing.”
Emma discussing Daniel Radcliffe's massive task of being the face of the franchise, and Dan's perspective on their friendship: Quote:
“He understood what his role was,” she says, “not just as an actor but as the leading man in this enormous franchise. And I think that was almost more important in a way. He held it all together. I am very grateful for him.”
For his part, Radcliffe remembers the relationship as being “very much like brother and sister, and when one or the other of us was having a tricky moment in our lives, it was often that we would confide in each other. We would also help each other with relationship advice; particularly funny were the moments when we would help each other compose texts to the most recent flames in either of our lives (not too flirty, but not too subtle either!). It was certainly a case of the blind leading the blind, but it was extremely funny.”
“I think it’s fair to say that Emma and I were the two most opinionated members of the young cast,” says Radcliffe.
Quote:
Emma struggled valiantly to fit everything into her life, becoming increasingly exhausted, until over Christmas advisors at Brown suggested that she take a leave of absence, a turn of events Yates was not surprised by.
“My only concern for her is that she puts too many demands on herself. For someone of her age, she is relentless in what she does. Even when we were shooting The Deathly Hallows, on her day off I would see her doing press for a fashion house or having meetings about her fashion line. And I would say to her, ‘Emma, do you ever stop? You’ve just got to stop.’ ”
Quote:
Recently, Emma read a script by Stephen Chbosky, based on his hit teen-angst novel, The Perks of Being a Wall Flower, and knew instantly that she had to play the role of Samantha, a character as far removed from the wholesome Hermione as could be. In true Emma style, she went to Hollywood to help raise the financing for the movie.
“Sam,” says Emma, “is such a different girl from who I am. I’ve been listening to the Smiths”—Sam’s favorite band—“on repeat for weeks.” In one sense, the troubled Sam is indeed a radical departure. But in another, more profound way, it is the right part for Emma right now. Near the end of the novel, Sam speaks for every young woman with a burning heart, a radiant soul, and a devouring need to experience all that life has to offer: “I’m going to do what I want to do. I’m going to be who I really am. I’m going to figure out what that is.”

And that's how it should be done. Even from an early age, Emma wanted this, which is something we have very little of these days. I wish more people, besides the Potter fans, would look to her examples instead of building up the lives of our "reality tv stars," who are put on a pedestal for their trashy behavior. We take education for granted, especially now when people realize they can make money by simply engaging absurd behavior, but we don't realize what a battle it is for some to get an education, whether they're rich or poor. Emma's getting her education and the Potter films are complete; everything will work itself out for the best if you really want it, which Emma obviously did. I'm glad to know that I grew up with her as my role model instead of what we have today. I hope the rest of the world catches on to that soon. EDIT: I thought she said that she's transferring to another University in the states? Didn't I read that somewhere or did I assume that she was going to stay in the US?

I'm glad Emma made Education her top priority.I love the fact that she stood behind getting school, because that is really helpful in the end of our lives, school can teach us so many parts of ourselves and the people we get to meet.
So if she had left after Order of the Phoenix with this in mind, I don't believe I would've been mad at her or stopped calling her my role model and idol I would applaud her because school is the best thing we can get.And so many children and teenagers see it as a waste, I don't. I absoulotely love school and try to get the most out of it.So Emma had a extremely good reason to leave Potter if Warner Bros. didn't wish to keep the best actress in the series. She is extremely grounded, educated , full of life and has her priororities straight, and I love that about her.
She will do many great things in the future, heck, she's already helping a bunch of people at this very moment with her People Tree collaboration
I'm proud of Emma, truly a wonderful lady to look up to.

Emma has always been right- minded. She doesn't make excuses and she has grown into such a wonderful role model for young girls. I mean she could have said " Oh, I'm rich I don't need to go to school." But she didn't. Good girl. Her parents raised her right.

Emma is such an amazing person, she is so sweet and funny and so much more things, but I don't want to make too long of a post here She is a perfect role model for kids, teens, or adults around the world, and I'm one of those teens that is proud to call her my role model.

I kind of hope she made her own decision, but I also hope she'll continu to act, not because i'm a Harry Potter fan, but because she is down to earth and right minded. We need models like that in this *****d up world where money is getting over artistic matters and having a good education,.
This is a great interview.

I really liked the insights that Emma shared -- she's done so many interviews in the last couple of years about her life outside Harry Potter that I imagine it's hard for her to share something new. This interview really emphasized the difficulty she has had in trying to balance the two parts of her life. I'm looking forward to seeing her in Perks of Being a Wallflower, just to see how different she is in it!

THAT right there-you NAILED it...the reality stars of today, especially in the US, I am ASHAMED of-the Jersey Shore nonsense, the Real Housewives Drama, I mean even American Idol...it is always DRAMA and overlooking their horrible behaviors and TV allows it to slide the way they talk to each other, treat each other, etc...Emma didnt care what she was going to be paid-she already had enough money in the bank by then and easily could have walked away (thank God she didnt) but chose to go on and work around the schedules. She knew Hermione was an important role and yes she probably would have been public enemy #1 LOL leaving but she stayed. It is very refreshing when you see a young person like Emma choose education over the wealth and fame. THIS is why Emma Watson is the best role model for young women everywhere.
As for her acting- I really started to see her own her scenes in HBP and especially DH1-the screams Watching Ron leave and begging for him to return Broke my heart...Emma made the right decision and she can call herself WB's pain in the butt all she wants-the thing is she had every right to want to juggle things. WB is a HUGE company and they could make some consessions and thank goodness for us as Emma/Hermione fans they did just that for Emma and her fans |
