| | Flying Lesson • Wanna Hang? Even though it is three in the afternoon, there is a chill in the early November air as you make your way to the Training Grounds. Winter is coming, and the signs have become clearer and clearer with each passing day. Today, the sun is not shining, sweaters and heating charms are starting to become a norm, and one can see their breath whenever one exhales.
Mr. MacKenzie himself has felt the change in seasons. Rather than casually standing with arms crossed, watching as you approach, he can be seen mid-flight. One hand on the handle of his broom, the man uses the other to toss a Quaffle into the air before zooming after the red ball to catch it as it makes a descent. This process repeats itself; Quaffle thrown, Quaffle caught, Quaffle thrown, Quaffle caught, Quaffle thrown, Quaffle caught. Needless to say, all the movement was certainly keeping him warm.
Catching hold of the Quaffle and hearing footsteps and murmurs approaching, MacKenzie swerves his broom to the side so that he is now facing you. "Welcome," he says loudly from up in the air. "Go on an' do some stretching. Make a couple o' laps around the area on yer broom before we get started if it fancies ye." OOC: Welcome to the first OOC Flying lesson of the term! Before posting, please familiarise yourself with the class rules and also keep in mind that this is not the first lesson that your characters have had with MacKenzie this term. The lesson has officially started, but feel free to jump in! LESSON PROGRESSION

| been here all along... SPNer | Whovian | Sherlockian | | Artist | Cornhusker | Blackhawks Cassidy was having the time of her life flying around the pitch. Her dad taught her and Rhett to fly as real young in case one of them ever wanted to play quidditch. She always loved flying but didn't really care much for the sport. She was just a fit of giggles as she flew around and around and around.
Oh they were done now. The giggles came to a stop as she reluctantly stopped. She looked at the teacher man. Broom tactics? There were tactics for brooms? Someone already said sweeping so what else was there. "Dusting?" That could be one right?

There were so many students. There were even lots in the air. Now was the time for the real test.
MacKenzie was so surprised. All we had to do was try.
Everyone was making progress. Very good progress. Vivienne took the Beater's bat and hit the bludger. What a nasty little bugger, as Wood would say.
But something was up with Castillo. Flying was a first year class. Now it was time to stretch.
She was alarmed when she heard the whistle from Mackenzie.
She was excited though. Broom tactics. "Professor Mackenzie, I know about the UP tactic." |

| • HuffleStud • Knight of The Zodiac • Manly Beard-Grower • Cicatrice de Harry • Flying was just a natural thing for Taddy, as he wasted no time zooming off after doing the required stretching. It gave him time to focus, after shaking off other thoughts going on in his head. It was therapeutic each lap he accomplished. He had to stop though once Sir MacKenzie blew the whistle.
Hmm, what sort of tactics? "There's.. the Dopplebeater Defence, getting two beaters to strike the same Bludger." How was it done? "It's not an easy feat since there's a chance both beaters could whack each other or only one hits the Bludger. So they both have to be within a certain distance and timing the swings just right." He would like to accomplish it someday or maybe.. today? Hm. Who knows. |

| No quotes, but you all were mentioned. :) Bathes in Maple Syrup | Dancing Lobster | Mrs. Charlie Weasley | Seneca's Beard | That's So Fetch There was a bit of a pause after the question had been asked. Colin couldn't help put dart his eyes left to right and back again repeatedly. The silence was a bit concerning. Should he have said manoeuvres instead? Regardless, he didn't expect much from the first years; however, he had noticed there were plenty of older kids who could carry the class.
Then at last the silence was broken. The Flying instructor had to suppress a snort. Sweeping? "Umm ... not quite, Miss Walsh," he responded to the sixth year, leaving it that. This was Flying class, so naturally he was looking for something related to that and not a House-Elf duty.
His attention then shifted to Dantes, and her mention of broom surfing caused him to nod his head. His head continued to move in the same motion as Newton, Tamesis, and Smethwyck brought up the Sloth Grip Roll, Double Eight Loop, and Starfish and Stick. "All good manoeuvres. Done each of these myself back in the day."
MacKenzie glanced at Mr. Dooley, certain that the boy had something to contribute considering he was a former captain. But the man had to carry on when another round of students spoke out.
Sinclair earned a simple head nod. "Weaving is likely the term yer looking for? Or maybe the Extreme Dive and Pull Up?" It all really depending on what she was thinking of, but he was willing to bet his Galleons on the former considering the girl was a Chaser.
Eye contact was made with Miss Castillo, though the gaze was quick as she didn't seem to have anything to contribute. Then his blue eyes shifted over to Miss Bell. "Right. Tamesis just described that to us."
A nod of approval was sent Winklebleck's way. Burke received a stern look at the mention of dusting. Between her and Walsh, Colin wasn't sure if they were trying to be funny or if they were just not knowledgeable. Not wanting to dive into that, he gave Miss Awning a nod (summoning a broom was not quite a tactic in his opinion, but it was a necessity nonetheless) as well as Mr. Potter's mention of the Dopplebeater Defence.
Getting the vibe that no one else was going to contribute an answer, Colin continued on with the lesson. "Now, of course, there are more tactics that weren't mentioned, but there is no need to worry about that right now. That's what future lessons are for, ye know. Today yer focus on going to be on masterin' the Sloth Grip Roll. As Miss Newton already stated, it's used to avoid Bludgers and such by hanging upside down on yer broomstick. Sounds easy in theory, but a different matter when put to practice - especially when there's a million things going on around ye."
"But right now we're goin' to do the Sloth Grip Roll. Low risk scenario, just practice. Keep yer eyes on me so ye know what I want ye all to do."
Once all eyes were on him, Colin mounted his broomstick and rose into the air until he was hovering some feet from the ground. "First ye are going to hover in the air a distance yer comfortable with. I recommend at least five or six feet. Once yer hovering, grip onto the handle of yer broom as tight as ye can with yer hands, keep yer feet firmly in place, and allow yerself to tip over." Within a blink of an eye, the man had gripped onto the handle firmly and let his body dip downward until he was looking at them upside down. "When yer ready to return back to yer original position, just swing yerself back up," he added, his body making a swift movement upward.
"To recap: hover in the air, tightly grip the handle, keep yer feet in place, and allow yer body to tip over. I would like all of ye to try to do the Sloth Grip Roll successfully. Once ye get confident, feel free to continue doing the tactic at greater heights and move around the Training Grounds. This'll be good practice for the game I have planned for the last part of class." OOC: It's mini-activity time! As Colin said, your character needs to attempt the Sloth Grip Roll while hovering 5-6 feet above the ground. Once they do so successfully, they should continue practicing the tactic at various heights while flying around the area. Have fun with this as I know there are characters with various levels of comfortability and experience on a broom!

Ellie stood and listened as Professor MacKenzie recapped all the broom tactics that her peers had mentioned before and after her. She had no parchment on hand to write them all down but she was certain all we’re mentioned in her flying books. Moment’s later they moved on to the mini activity which was to practice and master the sloth grip roll. Watching Professor MacKenzie perform the sloth grip roll an uneasy knot started to form in Ellie’s stomach. Yikes, how was she supposed to manage that without falling to the ground?
Nervously she mounted her broom and ascended to the recommended 6 feet up in the air, to hover a fair bit away from her nearest peer so she didn’t get disturbed by them. She was nervous enough as it was without watching how well or bad her peers did. Taking a shaky nervous breath she gripped her broom tightly with both her now sweaty hands. Putting her feet in place she tipped over to the right until she hung upside down. Looking down at the ground Ellie got frightened, and tried to quickly righten herself back up again but felt how her hands lost their grip and soon she lost the grip on her broom entirely and felt how she fell to the ground.
In a matter of moment’s she hit the ground sharply feeling how pain shot up her left side. Tears building in her eyes she cried out. "Ouuuuuuuuuch!"

| A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
He knew about the sloth grip roll technique in theory but he had never tried it out for practice. He watched as the Professor demonstrated it before he grabbed a school broomstick for himself since he did not own one.
He mounted the broom and kicked off of the ground softly as he did not want to hover too high above the ground at first and rose up until he was high enough that his head would not hit the ground when he hung upside down.
Taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, Dorian rolled over while gripping the broomstick tightly. He had been running for 2 years now so his lower body was pretty fit. His upper body wasn't so much and he felt his muscles as he hang. This was harder than he first thought. Not to mention that having your blood rush to your head wasn't a pleasant experience either.
But at least he had not fallen to the ground yet. From the corner of his eyes, Dorian saw one of the Gryffindors (Ellie) falling on the ground. "Are you okay?" he called as he swung his body to sit upright on the broom again but instead of doing that, he lost his grip halfway and before he knew it, he fell down to the ground on his back "ow" he gasped and rubbed his back as he sat upright. He stood back up and grabbed his broomstick to try again.

And then answers started a-flying. So many answers. Then it fell quiet.
Then more chitter-chatter. Mackenzie had then gotten everyone's question. Why would we be sweeping? It's flying class for goodness sake.
Broom surfing? How ridiculous! But Dooley brought up good maneuvers.
But Dooley was quidditch captain. Then Makenzie continued.
Weaving. Extreme dive and pull up. Good choices.
Then Castillo had no answer. Bell described a maneuver that was already mentioned.
Dusting. We're not cleaning a house, dude. Not a good maneuver.
But there were more. The sloth grip roll? That'll be the day.
She took out her parchment. Quote:
Used to avoid bludgers.
Hover in the air.
5-6 feet is recommended
Then she practiced what the professor taught her. At different heights, getting stronger each time.

| SPNer | Whovian | Sherlockian | | Artist | Cornhusker | Blackhawks Cassidy just smiled big and wide at the look she was given. What? She had given a good and proper answer to his question. What else was she supposed to say?
The young first year nodded along as Mister Grumpy Professor explained the tactic they were supposed to practice. It seemed simple enough, even though Cassidy didn't really like the idea of possibly falling off of her broom. But she could do this it didn't look tooooooooooo hard. She had to make Mister Grumpy Professor smile back at her. That was her goal for the day now.
She once again climbed on her broom and flew up about five feet above the ground. She bit her lip as she gripped on her broom and then WHOOSH! she did a quick flip over and was dangling upside down like a sloth! With a big grin on her face she looked around at others. This was actually kind of fun. Cassidy flipped back up, now giggling. She started to move up a little higher, wanting to try again, but higher.

After a few moments of hesitation, the young Slytherin realized that this in fact was not an optional task. And so she RELUCTANTLY mounted her broom, managing to hover at a SAFE distance. But for the record, she hated every single part of this and the displeasure was absolutely apparent on her face. It wasn't fair. Why did her mother seem to think this class was a necessity? It was absolutely ludicrous.
Taking a deep breath, the girl slowly tipped over to the-- "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK," SHE WAS SQUEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALING. And hanging upside down. How did this idiotic broom get turned right side up again, SOS!!!!!!!!! Her pony was literally hanging straight down, as was her head. Fortunately, her grip was quite firm and she did NOT plan on letting go any time soon.

| Teapot Occamy| gryphons&giraffes&goats,OH MY | chaser of the truth | flutiful❧ Sloth grip roll. She could do this. It was a maneuver she had used before, so it shouldn’t be too difficult. Taking advantage of the time on the ground, Cordelia took a moment to look at her blood sugar trend on her continuous glucose monitor and popped a couple glucose tablets into her mouth before she prepared to mount her broom. Got to make sure she wouldn’t have a low in the air. Commanding her broom up, Cordelia mounted her broom and gently rose into the air just six feet into the air. Gripping her broom as tightly as she could, Cordelia shifted her weight to one side of the broomstick and allowed her body to roll under. Pulling herself back up was the tricky bit as she didn’t have exceptional upper body strength, but she was able to position herself back on top of her broomstick after a few seconds. No matter how much experience one had on a broom, dangling upside down always felt weird. It just wasn’t a position that the human body was naturally designed to be in. Being in this position usually meant bludgers, and being chased by bludgers was far from being Cordelia’s favorite part of the game. Bludgers were annoying and scary because they diverted her attention from the snitch and they could cause serious injuries. Her favorite thing during matches was that final race to catch the snitch, adrenaline coursing through her veins as she zoomed down the pitch at full speed. Naturally she wanted to do something more with her sloth grip roll practice. After a few more practice rolls at six feet, Cordelia rose higher into the air. At first she did more sloth grip rolls in a stationary position. Once she was confident with her sloth grip rolls at this altitude, Cordelia started flying her broom around the pitch. Cordelia imagined a scenario in which a bludger was headed right at her and she would need to do a sloth grip roll to avoid it. While her broom was still moving forward, Cordelia gripped her broom as tightly as she could with her arms and legs and rapidly swung her body upside down. Once her imaginary bludger had passed, she righted herself again. The next time she went for a sloth grip roll while in motion, Cordelia extended her right arm as though she was trying to grab the snitch and gripped extra tight with her feet and left arm as she went upside down one-handedly. This was fun!

She cast her eyes upwards to see who had called when a boy lost his grip on his broom and fell to the ground on his back just a few feet away from her. Rubbing her left side where she still had pain she called over to the boy. "I’m okay. I took a bad tumble that’s all and hit my left arm and side." Gesturing to his back Ellie asked "Are you okay too? I saw you hit your back."
Grabbing for her broom she pushed herself up to a standing position with some pained grimaces hoping the pain would go away. Making sure to dry off her hands on her robes Ellie sat up again on her broom and pushed off from the ground. She hovered at 6 feet for a while before she took a deep breath. Here goes nothing she mumbled to herself as she gripped the broom with her hands and positioned her feet before she swung her body to the left and outwards until she hung upside down and gazed around. Ellie hung like that for a few moments before she swung herself back up very delighted that she had managed to perform the sloth grip roll. She spent the next several minutes practising the sloth grip roll with better or worse results that got better and better as she practised. Ellie kept the same height though. She didn’t want to accidentally injure herself more that she had from a higher height. It’d be dumb.

| YesJess! | Captain Goggles | Mama Badger | Eva's Soul Sister | An OG™ | It's all in the Numbers She wasn't joking about the sweeping tactic. The Professor HAD asked for broom tactics and hadn't been specific that he meant QUIDDITCH broom tactics. And fortunately a young first year Gryffindor seemed to follow her trend with her mention of dusting, something Maeve was very grateful for. Even though there was like five years difference between them and she didn't know better.
Ugh. The part of the lesson that Maeve was not looking forward to and yet, inevitable, truly. Sloth Grip Roll. Low Risk. Her light eyes scanned the pitch for Chase or Anna, some sort of comfort that she'd be okay. Why had she shown up today anyway? Oh right, pretty boys. Deep breath and then ... HUH
OH NO. Her young new third year friend Ellie was hurt!?!? Yes seeeeee!!! She knewwww flying was dangerous! Moving toward the third year lion, she was too slow to comfort though as she overheard one of her fellow sixth years asking if she was alright and apparently she was. Ehhh, okay, could she not procrastinate any longer? Or was Ellie being untruthful seeing as Dorian wasn't a housemate? Did she need to take Ellie to the hospital wing? Because she totally would.
Or probably not. She reckoned Ellie seemed the kind of girl to toughen things out. So instead, Maeve did what she did not want to do. Grabbed one of the school brooms and laid down on the ground on her back. And held it straight above her, in the same position as demonstrated. Only difference? She was not hovering in air and didn't plan to do so just yet. She just needed to get a feel for the position first.... Because her height comfort right now was on the ground.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Jacoby Rivers Hufflepuff Sixth Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Callista Rivers Gryffindor Second Year | Stealthy Ninja Queen | Snake For Life | waddling baker | binge royalty ♚ Sloth grip? he wasn't sure if it was going to be as fun as nose diving down from the air, but he figured it would be easier to try and do than it would be trying to fly on his newly unbooted foot. He grabbed his broom and got into the air. He hovered watching as some of the other students attempted it. He was trying to figure out which way to roll over, which leg to secure fist. Why was he over thinking this so much? He was the captain until he broke his ankle. He was great at flying.
Sighing he gripped the handle of his broom got ready to lock his ankles around the broom and fall to the side. And yet... he was nervous. He was waiting for something wild to happen with his balance. Shaking his head and twisting his hands on his handle he finally just did it and fell of to the left side. Hanging above the ground. "oh" he mumbled as he hung there for a minute.

| A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself. "Yeah i'm okay. I'm glad i didn't fly up high at the first try though" he said to Ellie as he stooped down and picked up his broomstick that had flown a few meters away. He stepped over it, sat down and kicked off of the ground.
As he hovered in the air, Dorian flew up to the height he had been before he had fallen down earlier and stopped as he reached it. He thought back as he tried to recall which mistake he had made. The only thing that came to mind was that his momentum had been too slow when he had tried to sit upright.
He watched the rest of the students at first before he gripped the broom tight and let his body fall to his right side. He held his eyes open as he tumbled and watched as the sky became the ground and the ground became the sky. He didn't think he'd ever get used to this feeling of being upside. It didn't feel natural
Lost in his own thoughts, it took him a moment to realise that blood was starting to go to his head and he began to feel lightheaded. He didn't want to fall down again though so he swung from left to right and used the push to get back on the broom. He had wanted to celebrate his achievement but something did not feel right...
He flew down to the ground and stepped off of the broomstick, letting it fall beside him before he sat on the grass, head between his legs as he did not trust to look up right now. He wasn't nauseous, just a bit dizzy. He knew that he'd be fine in a moment. It wasn't like it was the first time it had happened.

| Sassenach | RAVENPUFF | Sing me a song of a lass that is gone | bookDRAGON | #awkwardturtle<# Huh. So they were going to be doing the Sloth Grip Roll! Hanna had never actually done it without a Bludger coming towards her. Doing it without a bludger might make it scary, and she might second guess her abilities to do it. But really, 5 feet above the ground was easy. That was how tall she almost was. It was high enough to do the manoeuvre safely without hitting her head, but not too high that if she fell it would be from a great distance.
Kicking off, and slowly hovering to about five feet, Hanna took a moment to see what others were doing. She saw Ellie fall and hit the ground, but there was Dorian going to her rescue. And not too far away, her attention caught by the squealing, Hanna flew towards Nina. Quote:

Having so much fun upside down that she didn't want to move? It was kind of fun.
Hanna gripped the broom tightly, leaned down a little closer, and tipped herself off the side. Except of course she was holding on with her hands and legs, and there she remained. The world was fun upside down, even though it was a bit scary. She remained for a few moments, and then loosened the grip of her top leg, gave it a swing and used the momentum to pull herself right side up again.

| SPNer | Whovian | Sherlockian | | Artist | Cornhusker | Blackhawks Cassidy now was quite a ways up from the ground, but not too far. She could still make out the professor and some of the students that were still hovering at the lower levels. She was getting used to doing the Sloth Grip Roll stationary so now she just needed to try and do it moving around the pitch.
The first year lioness started to fly around the pitch at a relatively slower speed. Even though she was fairly comfortable on a broom, she was still nervous doing the tactic moving. Not everyday you intentionally fall under your broom while moving. Once she did a full lap she took a deep breath and WHOOSH! rolled under her broom doing the Sloth Grip roll. She quickly righted herself, a big dopey grin on her face.
Okay. This was more fun than she thought it was going to be. So Cassidy continued waiting for the next part of the lesson to begin.

She sat with Burke and Newton. Now the waiting game began...

Blood was rushing to her head very quickly and Nina was starting to get very disoriented!!! Was no one going to do ANYTHING???? She didn't know how to go right-side-up again!!!!!!! After a few more minutes of squealing, the Slytherin FINALLY managed to get herself up to a NORMAL seated position again. She hated this class so much. It was far worse than creatures. "I'm fine," clearly she hadn't been!!!!! But it was a little too late for that now.
She gave the Ravenclaw prefect an unimpressed look, before turning back to their flying instructor. Was class over yet? This was torture.
