| | Gregory the Smarmy
A medieval wizard, Gregory the Smarmy invented Gregory's Unctuous Unction, a potion that makes the drinker think whomever gave the potion is his or her best friend. Gregory allegedly wormed his way into King Richard's confidence with this potion and thus made his fortune.
Behind his chipped statue used to be a secret passageway outside the school, which was found by Fred and George Weasley during their first week of school and which caved in during the Battle of Hogwarts. The statue has since been used as a landmark on the fifth floor corridor.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sophia Svensson #556B2F Slytherin Fifth Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Eulalia Walles (#F48037) Hufflepuff Fourth Year | anyyyybody? Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE! Isabella was lost. Lost, lost, lost. She had gone up several staircases, walked down a few corridors, and gone down a staircase, and was not convinced she had even gotten to a new floor. She had been trying to track down the transfiguration classroom before her first transfiguration class, but there were no classrooms here.
Just a creepy statue of a probably dead guy that had clearly seen better days. Hogwarts was magical, how was everything so worn down? She decided she probably better stop walking, since she was getting more lost with every step. Gosh. She didn't even remember where the stairs were. |

He didn't normally venture around the castle for fun and this wasn't one of those times, by the way. He was just on his way done from the spare office. So fortunately for Isabella, he happened to be around when she was clearly in need of direction.
Or something. It wasn't easy to tell exactly what she needed, but she looked frantic. And as much as James would've liked to ignore it and walk away from the problem here... He couldn't resist. A part of it had to do with the hero complex he had built being inherently Gryffindor... But the other part had to do with being a Professor. It was a part of his job description to help students in need, yeah? Yeah, probably. Probably in one of the unwritten 'implied' parts. And he was a good Professor despite popular opinion. "You look confused," he called out from down the corridor as he made his way over. In other words, why the heck was she just standing staring at this creepy statue? Not for fun, clearly.

Oh thank goodness. Isabella heaved a sigh of relief when she heard footsteps. "I think I got lost," Isabella told the man. Professor something, right? Isabella thought she might have remembered him from the staff table, but she wasn't sure. She generally didn't pay much attention to people as far away as the staff table was from where she sat at the Hufflepuff table.
"I was looking for the transfiguration classroom. But... the stairs moved?" Which was weird, to be honest. Surely it was possible to have stuff in a school of wizardry that wasn't enchanted. "And then I think I walked in a circle, because I don't remember which way the stairs were. Did you come from the stairs, Professor...?" she gestured back the way the Professor had come from, hoping he was going toward the stairs so he could just show her and she wouldn't have a chance to get lost again. She really needed a map. |

She really needed a map. She 'thinks' she got lost? She was either lost or she wasn't. There wasn't any 'thinking' needed. James watched her as she continued talking. Which she did a lot of. Must be a first year. And the getting lost bit had nothing to do with the guess. All the first years were talkative. It was something about the honeymoon phase of Hogwarts and whatnot. Only took a year for the shine to wear down. He'd be waiting for that moment. "Ah, they do that," he nodded, amused with the situation. "I did," he answered watching as she moved her hands around. "I'm assuming you're a first year?" He had already decided that he was going to have some fun with this... Alright? An unsuspecting, unknowing, naive firstie. So many possibilities.
Professors could have fun too. It was a part of the contract. And he was bored. And he deserved fun.

Professors could have fun too. It was a part of the contract. And he was bored. And he deserved fun. "Are they still there? The stairs?" Isabella asked, not realizing how ridiculous it was for stairs to be completely gone. Yes, they moved, but they didn't up and walk away. That would be dangerous. Hogwarts was dangerous. "I am! First year! First one of my siblings, too, my mother thought I would be a Ravenclaw like her, but I'm not, I'm a Hufflepuff!" she said brightly. Silly Isabella. Obviously the Professor knows you're a Hufflepuff, it's on your uniform. "All the Hufflepuffs are so nice!" Maybe other people were nice, too, but she had only met Hufflepuffs.
"What do you teach?" Teach...or profess? If teachers taught, did professors profess? Isabella wasn't sure. Gee, she was sure glad that this professor had come along so that she would be able to eat dinner tonight and wouldn't be wandering the corridors for weeks, not eating, until somebody found her. |

So this may be easier than he thought it'd be. ".... Yes." The stairs moved... But they didn't just... vanish.
First years, man. The whole lot of them were absolutely clueless about everything possible. Were they even human? Sometimes it was hard to tell.
And she kept talking, but James had stopped listening about a quarter of the way through. He was good at pretending though, let that be known. Only his well timed nods were merely to feign interest. Something about how she wasn't Ravenclaw. Well clearly. Those ones were meant to have some sort of clue. This one was about as clueless as a newborn kneazle. "Didn't you pick up one of the maps?" he raised a brow. "Hm, I thought they always gave them out the first night to all the new comers..." Not really. There weren't any maps. But how was she supposed to know that? Okay, okay so maybe this was a bit evil.... But he'd make sure she knew it was all a lie... Eventually. No harm in having some fun, yeah? "Care of Magical Creatures," he replied slowly. "Do you plan to take it?" A lot was riding on this answer of hers, no pressure.

Coool so the stairs were still there, she could get to the transfiguration floor. Or was this the transfiguration floor? This professor wasn't being very helpful. Why didn't he tell her how to get to the transfiguration floor? Or at least indicate what floor they were on? Isabella supposed maybe he didn't come to this part of the castle very often. Oh. Maybe he was lost, too! Isabella abruptly stopped talking and gulped, hopefully not visibly.
"Maps? There were maps!" Isabella knew she should have paid more attention when she first got to Hogwarts. But there was just so much to see! The ceiling in the Great Hall was made of stars, for one. And the ghosts! And there had been so much food, and the sorting hat. She would have to go looking for the maps once she got un-lost. Surely they had maps all year and not just at the opening feast.
She stared blankly at the professor when he asked if she planned to take Care of Magical Creatures. Why would she know that? She was a first year. You had to be at least a third year to take Care of Magical Creatures, and she was a first year. She had two whole years to make that decision! Oh, but she couldn't say no to him. But she didn't want to lie...what if she said yes, she planned on taking it, but changed her mind next year, and then what if he held it against her forever and gave her detention? "I hadn't thought about it," she said truthfully. "I've barely thought about my classes this year." She only knew what they were because she had had to buy textbooks. |

How else could they expect you lot to find the hidden swimming pool?" There weren't any maps of course. And there wasn't a hidden swimming pool either, for that matter. Prefects bathroom could probably be turned into a pool though. Why did the prefects need their own bathroom anyways? But either way, his voice didn't falter. He was good at this. Been a while since he'd had fun like this too. Firsties were the best.
He paused, considering the answer she gave in regards to CoMC. "Well, you should think about it," he nodded. "A lot more fun than arithmancy is," and if that wasn't convincing, he didn't know what was. Plus, what kid didn't like to play with unicorns? 'Cause that was CoMC turf. And James was easily the best Professor at this place so there was that too.
Just saying.

Just saying. Hidden swimming pool? Isabella frowned at the man. She was...85% certain that her mother would have told her about a hidden swimming pool. "There's not a swimming pool..." she said slowly. Why would he lie about a hidden swimming pool, though? Maybe there was a hidden swimming pool, and her mother had just never found it. If she had a map, she would know...
"What's arithmancy?" she asked. It sounded fancy. And hard. If her choices were Care of Magical Creatures or Arithmancy, she'd probably be better off with CoMC. Then at least she would get to see fluffy animals. |

She just wouldn't know about it because she didn't get one of the maps. One of the maps that didn't actually exist. There weren't any rules about Professors and lying to students just for the heck of it, right? Because if so, eh. Whatever. Rules never bothered James anyways. He only followed the ones he liked. For the most part. "It's really dense," that's what Arithmancy was in a nutshell anyways. He was paraphrasing. And maybe there was some bias behind it. Considering that he hadn't even qualified to take the class as a student. "A load of math and numbers," boring really, she'd much rather work with animals. "Creatures on the other hand, more fun. Plenty of hands on experience," not to mention she'd have the best Professor in the entire school sooooooooooo.... It was a win-win situation.
And why were they discussing this again? Clearly she'd take creatures. It was the proper decision to make after all.

She couldn't tell if this professor man was pulling her leg or not. She, who had three brothers, couldn't tell if she was being had. But he was a professor and she didn't really know anything, so Isabella couldn't be mad. She gave an exasperated sigh but let the hidden swimming pool thing drop. She'd just have to explore every corner of the castle in the next seven years, and then she'd know if he was telling the truth or not. Or if he thought he was lying but just didn't know about the hidden pool.
Dense? Isabella had never heard a class described as dense before. She shrugged and uncrossed her arms. "I don't like math," she said matter-of-factly. "I guess I will take Care of Magical Creatures, if the alternative is math." And then, when she found the swimming pool, she could brag about it during class. Hah!
"Um. Which way are the stairs, again?" She didn't want to wander off and make a wrong turn as soon as she was able. |

"Um. Which way are the stairs, again?" She didn't want to wander off and make a wrong turn as soon as she was able. Oh this Professor man was most definitely pulling her leg. Not only was she gullible, but he was also incredibly good at sounding completely serious when he wasn't. Which made for a very difficult-to-read situation. He was interested to see if she'd actually go around looking for the 'hidden swimming pool' now. Hopefully she did take what he had to say to heart. It'd make for quite the entertaining evening, that's for sure.
Heh.
He was amused with her reasoning, but if she would end up choosing creatures simply because it was the alternative... He didn't like that. Creatures was a first choice. Not an alternative. But he'd blame it on her naivety. She'd surely come to her senses once time came around to make the choice. Besides, if she asked around he was SURE that everyone would rave about his class. What wasn't there to like? "If you head this way, you won't miss them," he pointed back from the direction he had just come from earlier.
This time he was telling the truth.

This time he was telling the truth. Isabella beamed at the professor when he pointed toward the stairs. "Thank you, sir!" she said. She was done being confused by this strange man and his unhelpfulness what with maps and swimming pools third year class choices. She just wanted to learn how to go wherever she wanted in the castle and not get lost. "Have a good evening!" It was evening by now, right? Isabella wasn't sure how long she had been lost. She didn't have a watch and hadn't passed a window in a while.
Looking about one last time, so she could prevent getting lost here a second time, Isabella squared her shoulders and started back down the corridor to where Draper had pointed. To the stairs. And then to dinner, because she was hungry. Getting lost made her hungry. |
