Well, actually it has been very rough on me. I have bitten my nails to the tips of my fingers. That left me with these ugly nubs on my hands. I pulled great patches of hair, and had unsitely bald spots on my head. All this was because I was trying to be patient for your return, as I love you and your story so much. Now that exams are pretty much over and you can update and stuff, my patience has been rewarded with my nails and hair magically regrown. I can be patient for you anytime you need me to. Piece of cake. Things wasn't as bad as I thought. I just want to read more of your story.

So happy you're back, and I'm so happy your exams being mostly over have given you the freedom to enjoy life again. Congratulations on them, cause I know you did spendid on them.

Chapter 11:
Red Roses, Black


I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,

He pinned her against the wall, his mouth lingering on the soft skin of her neck. The touch seemed to set her whole soul on fire, and it was with an enormous, inward effort that Daphne Grass pushed him away. The skin on her wrists burned, where he had held them, and her eyes were dark, full of love she could swear on, anytime.

“Don’t, Blaise,” she said softly. “I should go back home; I have an office to go to, tomorrow morning.”

He slipped an arm around her waist and, with little regard to what she had just said, pulled her close. She was very pretty, very delicate, and it felt nice to hold her, this way. He could feel her heart beat against his chest, a wild little thing that seemed to have no control over itself. It was a wonder how she had managed to push him away, in the first place. Blaise smirked at the thought, a smirk she did not see.

“But I think –“ He pulled her closer -- “That you should stay the night.”

It made him laugh, how easy it was to break the resolve in those glassy, blue eyes. He saw it shatter, now, for a second, for two seconds – and then, to his surprise, she shook her head. “I would love to, Blaise; but I should go home,” she said quietly. “Mum will be worried, if she comes up to check on me, and I’m not in bed. I didn't tell her, that I would be away. Not to mention, your mother – I don’t want her to find out.” She lowered her dark eyelashes.

“My mother won’t find out,” Blaise said softly. He knew that to be true, of course: No one could enter his bedroom without his permission, and his mother would be the last one to – she knew him too well, to do such a thing. Of course, it did not really matter if she knew him or not, where entry was concerned – Shreya could not enter, even if she wanted to, unless he gave his express permission, because that was the way the door of his bedroom worked. That was, incidentally, the way the door of Shreya’s bedroom worked, too. Blaise knew this, and was content that both of them – him, and his mother – could co-exist, in their own privacies.

It was not his business what she was up to, unless it concerned him; and it was not her business what he was up to, unless it concerned her.

He had not intentionally kept the fact that he was seeing Daphne Grass, from his mother - it was just natural, because they hardly ever talked of his relationships -- they happened, when they did, and she knew none of them was, could perhaps ever be, serious. Which was, incidentally, one of the major reasons she did not bother for the details. But now that he thought of it, he decided that it was better that his mother did not know. Daphne was one of the ‘good’ lot, someone who was enough of a coward to look up to Harry Potter, and his mother would not be too pleased that he was with such a girl, even if the girl was only play, and nothing else, for him.

Daphne liked it this way, too. She did not want anyone to know, because she was fully aware that no one would be happy to know she was seeing Blaise. He had never been a death eater, not even in the time Draco Malfoy had; but the Zabinis were still regarded with mistrust, especially due to their close ties with the Malfoys and the Notts. Her mother would lock her up in her room, for a good day or two, if she found out that her daughter was in a relationship with a Zabini – especially Blaise Zabini.

“I don’t want her to,” Daphne mumbled into his chest. “I... I should leave now, Blaise.” There was a knock at the door, at this very moment, and Daphne suddenly pulled away from him, her eyes wide with fear. “I need to go, Blaise – quickly –” She looked up at him, waiting for him to take off the charms that disallowed apparition and disapparition within his room, her heart beating even faster, than it usually did, when she was with him.

Instead, he looked at the door.

“Is that you, mother?”

“Open the door, Blaise,” Shreya said, from the other side of the door. “I need to talk to you, right now.”

He placed an arm around Daphne’s waist, and pulled her close, again. “Can this wait a minute, mother?” he asked. “I am... busy, right now.” He smirked, as he spoke, leaning down to kiss Daphne. The girl, in question, struggled against him. “I need to go, Blaise. Please.” There was nothing pleading about the last word, and it was calmly-spoken, but Blaise knew her well enough to assess the urgency that lay within it.

Then there was a flash in the bedroom, one like fire, and a golden eagle-feather floated in front of his eyes. Slowly but surely, it began to fall downwards, and Shreya’s voice filled the entire room – not her normal voice, but her normal voice magnified tenfold. “Blaise Zabini!” The voice said, calm even in its loudness. “I don’t care if you’re busy, you need to open the door right now. Signett has sent back word about your mar –”

The words ended, right there, because Blaise had let go of Daphne, grabbed the feather, and crushed it in the palm of his hand, before the word ‘marriage’ could so much as be completed. Shreya’s voice faltered, died instantaneously, and his breathing was heavy, ragged in a furious sort of way. He muttered something under his breath that Daphne could not make out, and looked at her.

“Go."

She reached out a hand to touch his cheek. “Blaise?” Her voice was small, unnerved by his sudden anger. “Is everything alright?”

“I said go.”

She disapparated, right there, right then. Blaise waited a moment, then flicked his wand, to ensure that the anti-apparition charms were back in effect, before striding to the end of the room, and wrenching open the door. “What do you want, mother?” he asked, almost testily.

“Stop being a sourhead,” Shreya threw him a glare, as she walked in, and helped herself to a couch. “You – what the heck has happened to you?” There was anger, behind the eyes, his eyes, and she knew him too well not to note it, where others might have easily missed.

“Nothing.” He took a deep breath, and sat down in front of her. “Don’t say that word again. Not until you and I are in front of each other.”

Shreya raised an eyebrow. “What word?”

Blaise frowned. “Marriage,” he said. He was glad he had acted in time, and crushed that feather, before the word could have been completed – he did not want Daphne to know of it. She was his little toy, his plaything, and he did not want to loose her, this easily. Granted, he could find a new one with no real difficulty; but the way she was in love with him was so delicious, even though it was also pathetic to see how she could do pretty much anything for him. Probably even kill herself, if he asked her to – he would have to try that, one day. Not yet, though. He was not done with her yet. “I would have thought that much would be clear.”

Shreya rolled her eyes. “It might interest you to know that I have talked, at length, to your future... Father-in-law.”

“Do you want me to throw up?”

Shreya ignored this, and plowed on. “He says it is customary, in the Holland-Malfoys, to marry a daughter, on the day of her twenty-first birthday, to whoever she wishes – silly, if you ask me. What if she does not wish for anyone, right then? But, that is not our problem but his daughter's. What concerns us is that her birthday approaches. End of this week, to be precise.”

One week before his bachelorhood was taken away. No matter – he was going to make sure that demon regretted ever having married him. He would make every inch of her life with him, a living hell. If she was wise, she would file for a divorce, the very next week. “Very well,” he said, rising to his feet. “Let Signett Malfoy know that Zabinis do not plan at this short a notice, and the ceremony will have to be very simple, a hushed affair.” It was not that he could not plan a wedding in one week, but that he did not want to. “Is that all?”

Shreya frowned. “I do not believe Signett wants it to be a simple affair, Blaise. Neither, in fact, do I – if my son is getting married, every witch and wizard shall get to know that Master Zabini is –”

“– being given away in an arranged marriage?” Blaise glared at her. “I have said what I wanted to say, mother. You will let Signett Malfoy know that this will be a very simple affair; and, hasty as he is to give away his daughter before this week is out, I believe he will agree. If he does not --- then that is, I believe, your problem. Now can I possibly go back to sleep?”

“Idiot,” Shreya hissed, but she rose to her feet, and left without an argument – perhaps she needed her sleep, too.

Blaise clicked the door shut, once she was gone; sat down at the edge of his bed. Daphne was gone, and what could have been a night of fun, quite ruined. All because of that little demon -- Signett’s daughter. It was ironic, how he did not even know the name of the girl he was going to give up his bachelorhood for, end of this week – the girl who would beg for a divorce, by the end of the next week, if he had any hand in this matter -- and he would. She was going to pay, for placing him in a position where he had no real options, where he had to do what he most despised – another’s bidding.

She was going to be sorry.

Satisfied with that last thought, he fell back on his bed, arms beneath his head, and eventually drifted off to sleep.
