Thornton was under no illusions that he might win this duel. He considered his win against Dante to be more luck than skill, and so he was almost certain that Zeke would best him. He just hoped it wouldn't be... too embarrassingly.
He'd been practicing, sure, and had a new opening combination that he wanted to try, and so this was at least an opportunity to do that. What had father called this whole endeavor? Character building?
Thornton looks in the direction of the stands as he took the requisite number of paces away from Zeke. Though the charms kept him from seeing Paige, he still smiled in the direction of where he assumed she'd be. He just hoped he wasn't too... mangled or gross by the end of it.
Turning to face Zeke, Thornton wiped his hand on his pants and considered that he may need a gripping charm if his palms stayed that clammy. Bowing, he looked up with a small grin. "Go easy, ok?" He said this full-voiced, but then quickly followed with two whispered spells, with precise wand movements.
Curse of the Bogies. And the Bat Bogie Hex. Right at Zeke.
If you were going to turn bogies into bats, might as well up the bogie production, right?

Finals. He had made it to THE final, and he was confident.
After beating two fifth year students, what fourth year WOULDN'T be confident in his abilities? None. Or at least, not Zeke Browne. The world was practically at his feet as far as he was concerned. And while he deemed that to be the case, he wasn't going to let that knowledge make him sloppy. Every duel had been a test of his abilities, and this was no different. Thornton - being a typical Ravenclaw - was smart, and winning a duel was as much strategy as magical ability, perhaps even more-so.
Bowing to his opponent, Zeke quirked an eyebrow. Go easy? "I'm sorry... I won't," was his reply.
THIS WAS THE FINALS.
There had to be NO room for error, and 'going easy' on someone was most certainly the most reckless error one could make in a duel. No, he would be merciless.
Very quickly though, he was forced into action, or there about. The first he was ready for, and so he cast his shield charm in time to deflect the spell back to Thornton. "Protego!" The Ravenclaw's second spell though, took him by mild surprise, and suddenly he had something growing in his nose which quickly - TOO QUICKLY, turned into big flapping black bat wings!!!!! And it was attacking his face!!!!
The leathery wings bat against his cheeks and nose with a ferocity he didn't think bats had, leaving little scratches in their wake. It had to stop. "Finite!" he cast at the hex afflicting his face!!! He didn't want to waste valuable time with such distractions, and so quickly, he focused on the task at hand. Defeating Thornton Baines.
With his composure regained, Zeke whispered his own shots aimed at Thornton. He cast "Colloshoo," and Ears to Kumquats in quick succession, his intention to disable, distract and put Thornton under pressure.

Reason: formatting annoyed me
Thornton had no time to enjoy the fact that the second spell had hit, because the Curse of the Bogies was coming back at him, and fast. Acting almost solely on instinct, Thornton dropped to the ground to avoid the spell.
But that meant that Zeke's first offensive spell hit him full on, sticking the fronts of his shoes to the ground. Thornton Baines was in a compromised position, face down, fronts of his shoes stuck to the ground. And there was another spell flying right at him.
Why couldn't he hear???
Thornton was frazzled. With his free hand, he reached up and touched his ears. Kumquats. Thornton hated that hex. Still prone, Thornton glanced at his left wrist, and the good luck charm tied there and tried to steady himself. Deep breathes Baines.
Rather than free himself first, which he assumed would be expected, he whispered a trip jinx, casting at Zeke's feet - convenient, since he was pretty much at eye level with them, still stuck to the ground.
As that spell flew, Thornton cast a dramatically loud "Finite!" at his own feet, hoping it would be an auditory distraction. He threw in a sudden babbling curse, muttered under his breath, as he continued up to his feet.

He was amused, as evidenced by the grin that forced its way onto his features. Thornton was face down and STUCK! Hahahahaha! But the show wasn't over, and he should have been making the most of the opportunity while he had the advantage. He never liked the idea of kicking someone when they were down, literally or otherwise, and so he DID hesitate until Thornton could put himself together somewhat. The kumquats though, were brilliant. Whatever mastermind had come up with that one surely had an epic sense of humour.
All of this though, momentarily put him off his game, and he LOATHED how easily his mind was off and racing on tangents. NOT. GOOD.
All thoughts of kumquats were forgotten as his legs flew out from beneath him, resulting in his own face-planting on the arena floor.
JDSKFIFVYSIKDJDSOW!!!!... WHYYYYYYYY DID THIS HAPPEN EVERY DUEL?!
Zeke had hoped he'd get through one duel without tasting the floor, but apparently that wasn't possible, even with the good luck bracelet that was bestowed upon him. Merlin.
At least though, he wasn't stuck, so he was able to quickly roll out of the way to relative safety - whatever spell Thornton had cast hitting the floor where he'd been laying just a moment earlier.
Getting back to his feet it was his turn to retaliate, and he was thankful Thornton wouldn't hear him - that meant he had to SOME extent, an element of surprise. Maintaining his earlier intensity, Zeke cast a Stinging Hex and the Jellyfingers Curse at his target.

Reason: good luck, not godlike bracelet, gosh laptop!!!
Not hearing had... an unexpected calming effect on Thornton. Sure, he couldn't hear what was being cast, which put him at a disadvantage, but it also heightened his visual focus. So... the kumquats could stay.
He was up on the balls of his feet, ready to dodge whatever came next, once Zeke managed to get his face off the ground, that is. Whatever it was, he couldn't let it hit him, and if two were coming, well.. His eyes were trained on Zeke's wand, looking for any movement. What if it was a spell without a visual clue?
He ducked as Zeke cast... well.. whatever it was, and barely avoided the stinging hex. He knew it had been close, and so immediately cast protego, assuming that Zeke would have followed up with a second spell. Deflecting the jelly-fingers curse back at Zeke, Thornton exhaled. As the shield dropped, Thornton prayed there were no others coming.
Ok, so maybe this not hearing thing would be harder than he thought.
Immobilize and disarm. Immobilize and disarm. Thornton repeated it like a mantra, realizing that it would be the only way for him to come out on top in this duel. The bombarda he'd cast last duel had.. put him off anything more aggressive and with his kumquat ears.. well, he needed to try to end this soon.
Should he try it? He hadn't practiced it much, but it had been a combination he'd put together while studying. Heart racing, Thornton summoned up what energy he had for a triple-attack.
"Colloshoo. Incarcerous. Expelliarmus." He kept his voice low, but his intent strong, sending the spells rapid-fire right at Zeke. Maybe the first two were redundant. But if at least one of them hit and then the third...
Well, Thornton could hope.

He had to give Thornton props, he was doing well considering he had delicious citrus fruits as ears. What exactly would happen if one ATE said kumquats? Would he have to regrow his ears? It was an interesting thought, one he would have to look into and possibly test another time. With his spell dodged and deflected, and dishearteningly so, Zeke raised a shield of his own to cop the hit. "Protego!" he had cast, satisfied when the spell hit the shield with a modest thunk.
With Thornton still functioning well enough, he would have to account for his defences in addition to his offences, which was a pity because he was hoping he could rapid-fire a killer combo - minus the killer part. Zeke was determined to see this duel through to the end, and he wanted it to end with a show-stopper. Though, really, his duel with Kyroh DID end, but not in the way he had imagined, so this time would surely make up for it. Opting to repeat a tactic he'd used previously, Zeke cast the Feather-light Charm on himself to free up his movements. While their duelling armour wasn't HEAVY heavy, it wasn't as light as his general daywear, and he fared better with those. Either way, he needed an edge and this seemed a good way to get it.
Unfortunately for him, there was more defending to be done, and he did NOT appreciate it, Thornton Baines. Rude.
The first he dodged by side-stepping, and while he was at it, he took a few more paces so he wouldn't be an easy target for his opponent. But it wasn't enough. All too quickly he was on the receiving end of incarcerous - easily one of his favourite spells - ropes binding his legs together and his arms to his sides. All he could do to not get hit with the disarming charm was to let momentum push him to the floor and roll out of the way, his wand still in his hand.
Time was of the essence and he didn't want to waste more of it on the ground (because he seemed to spend a lot of it down there already). Zeke cast "Finite," on the ropes and rose to his feet as if he were just completing a casual burpee, sending a sharp "Periculum," the Ravenclaw's way. Red was such a lovely colour, was it not?

Still unable to hear, Thornton had only the words repeating inside head. Advice he'd been given from all manner of people, just cycling over and over and over again.
He held his breath as the ropes wrapped around Zeke and hoped, for just a split second, that the disarm would hit as well. When it flew over the boy's tumbling body, though, Thornton muttered frustratedly under his breath. So close. SO CLOSE.
But being unable to hear, and the momentary frustration, meant that the red sparks flying at him were coming too fast to dodge or shield against. Throwing up an arm to shield his eyes at least, Thornton let the spell hit him, wincing at the sparks. Vision fuzzy, Thornton cast at the last place he'd seen Zeke.
"Rictusempra!" The spell was off and flying before he could really think. He needed a moment to compose himself and hopefully that would buy him time.
Maybe he could at least snatch a stalemate from the jaws of defeat.

It was a hit, and for a brief moment Zeke almost felt for the guy. But this was a duel, pain and plight was to be expected. Of course, it could have been worse, and knowing that made him realise that he probably wasn't pushing as hard as he could. There were no real tricks or fancy combinations as of yet. He wanted to up his game, but did he need to?
With his quick reflexes supported by his light-weight readiness, Zeke deflected Thornton's spell with a turn of his wand, "Protego!" And while Thornton's lack of hearing was somewhat beneficial, the boy still too many of his senses left, as well as his common sense, or smart sense or whatever it was called. "Confundo!" he added to his assault as he remained moving, eyes searching for a window of opportunity.
The shower of gold sparks was what was driving him. Victory, he craved it.

That was exactly why that spell had not been part of his original plan. Because if it hit him after it was deflected. Thornton sidestepped the ricocheting rictusempra and promptly tripped over his own feet in his haste. As he hit the ground and rolled, it meant that he also avoided the confundo, however accidentally.
Pushing himself to his feet, panting to catch his breath, Thornton considered a change of approach, rapidly running through spells he thought he wouldn't cast during a duel.
You don't get a win unless you play in the game..
First, he needed a distraction, casting Ventus directly at Zeke, hoping to disorient him with the gust of air. He had no idea if Zeke could cast non-verbals, so silencio was an option but not a great one... and this was where the change of strategy came in. He rapidly followed up with a whispered, discretely cast slugulus erecto.
Thornton took the moment to drag his sleeve across his eyes, the only thing he could hear the pulse in his own, well, kumquats. He didn't have much left in him.

It didn't cease to amaze him how well Thornton could handle a duel without hearing. Zeke replied on his senses with equal measure, how he could do what his opponent did without sound was beyond him. His eyes would be under a great deal of strain, that was certain.
Disappointed with his efforts so far, Zeke took a dive to miss the impact from Thonton's Ventus, with a forward roll, Zeke braced against the floor with his heel and pushed off so he was sprinting a short way back to his other side from which he'd come. As much as he could tell Thornton was doing his best to keep his casting as quiet as possible, could he hear himself? Cause it was mildly amusing. The softly spoken 'slugus' was heard, and so he knew what was coming next. Eructo. No thanks. Nope. Not again. He'd had enough of that from Kyroh, and he didn't fancy another taste. In addition to that he didn't much fancy Maggie not wanting to snog him at the end of this, because those were lovely and he wanted to claim that prize ASAP.
Throwing up his shield he deflected the slug-munching charm back to his fellow fourth year, "Protego!"
Mind racing to form words and wand movements, Zeke then lunged forward, casting "Lumos!" and "Obscuro!" in quick succession, hoping the first would blind him to the second - which would blind him further. If Thornton couldn't hear, and couldn't see... SURELY that would be advantage enough.
It was time to have Thornton's back against the wall, literally or figuratively it didn't much matter to him. His intention was the end this next shot.

Where did Zeke get all that energy?? Thornton watched his fellow fourth year practically sprint around the dueling arena. Clearly Thornton should have spent more time training and less time.. well, whatever he had done.
Thornton had immediately cast protego after his hex, anticipating either a reflected spell or a new attack. And so no one would be throwing up slugs today. Thornton kept his eyes fixated on the tip of Zeke's wand, the only way he'd been able to evade anything while being unable to hear. Every time it twitched, Thornton had been ready to duck, dive or shield. But it would prove his undoing, as the light from the tip turned his vision white for the few seconds before it went completely dark. Obscuro... it had to be.
Resigned, Thornton cast a half-strength expelliarmus in the direction he had last seen Zeke, but with no way to sense really anything, for all he knew, the boy was on the other side of the arena by now. He was exhausted.
And with that, Thornton let his wand drop to the ground as he raised both hands over his head. He couldn't hear and he couldn't see and he had nothing left to give. He was done.
It was over.
Mercy?

He was hungry for this to end, partly because he was ACTUALLY hungry, partly because he wanted to hold his girlfriend, partly because he wanted a shower of gold sparks (and a proper shower too) and LASTLY... because he didn't want to hurt Thornton. As demure as Paige looked, he was sure she might slap him if he hurt her beau. Badgers were unpredictable, even if they were incredibly cuddly.
His wand was poised in front of him, ready to whip, quip and twirl in whatever fashion might have been necessary, but somehow with Thornton clearly at a loss he didn't make moves right away.
The expelliarmus that was cast had landed to the side of him by a metre or so - one of the advantages of keeping moving he supposed. But before he could get in his last shot, one which would have Thornton literally pressed against the wall - or floor, either would work - the Ravenclaw surrendered his wand and raised his hands above his head.
....
That was it?
....
He won?
He stood for a moment catching a couple of breaths which felt free and easy after what they'd just been through. Zeke walked the distance toward his friendly foe a hand outstretched to take and shake Thornton's. "Good match, you dueled well," he grinned before realising Thornton probably couldn't hear him. Heh.
