The Divination classroom has once again been rearranged for another visiting professor. This time, however, the classroom has adopted an ordinary classroom setting, with tables and two chairs behind each one of them. Plain and simple. In the front of the classroom, a short and chubby lady covered in all shades of pink greets the students with a fit of indiscreet giggles, possibly making them feel like she is laughing at them, causing them to be uncomfortable and self-conscious. She covers her tiny mouth with her chubby hands every time someone else walks in, revealing her long, pink, and bedazzled nails. When she is not giggling she is readjusting her bubblegum pink blazer, which is two sizes too small, or fanning herself with her hand. The board behind her is clean and the table she is leaning against is empty.

Terminally uncool. That was exactly what he was destined to be as he heard her giggling at him. Kiss of death, that.
Dropping his hand, he wiped it on his robe. Sweaty. At least she thought his name was interesting. Perhaps he'd gotten past the point where people tried to shorten it or rhyme it embarrassingly. "It's Welsh," he mumbled. "Means 'immortal.' It was my great-grandfather's name."
He pushed the book off the table, recognizing that he wasn't going to get to read it discreetly, and bent to put it in his bag. As he straightened up, he hit his head on the edge of the table. Crack.
Maybe he could just hide under it for the rest of the lesson.
"Immortal, huh? Funny thing to name a human..." Seeing as humans were generally mortal. Unless you drink some icky potion or something equally unethical.
Ellie stifled a laugh and turned away. She saw nothing if Emrys didn't want her to.
Just as the guest teacher super-pink lady spoke. Lucky timing.

As if the pink weren't enough, her name was just as much of a headache. Poppy Prunella Pricklepot. Teaching 'Entrancing Enchantments'. Alliteration must run in the family or something.
Ellie wasn't too fond of addressing her by any of the suggested titles. So, she was just going to avoid talking to her directly if she could.
"Spells that cause someone to be 'entranced' by the caster?" Yes? Seemed like one of the more obvious types of spells.

If Emrys could curl into a ball right there and just disappear, he would have been the happiest. He kinda liked his name, but trying to explain why, well, it just sounded stuffy, overly intellectual and hopelessly nerdy. Raising his head and getting ready to take notes, he caught Louisa's smile and offered a weak one of his own.
Glancing at Ellie, grateful that she was no longer staring at him, he twitched his nose and adjusted his glasses.
He began to jot down notes, as a sense of panic began to grow in him. "Madame Poppy? I agree with my classmates' answers about the nature of entrancing enchantments.. buh.. but, I'm wondering if our seminar today is theory or.. or.." He took a breath. "Or if there will be a practical component." Like, on each other.

Daichi's hand moved to his face as he felt his cheeks getting red. Both from embarrassement and from the pinch itself. He was getting used by Professors ruffling his hair but...pinching his cheek?! "Uh..i..right..." he stammered but the *Professor* had already turned away.
"Auntie~! Auntie~! " he almost yelled at the front of the class, waving his hand to get her attention. "It's a purple colored spell!" he said proudly and grinned.

Alyssa was glad that Madam Poppy had liked her gift. She just wished that she had mentioned from which House she was from. Oh well now that class had started it was time to concentrate on the lesson proper. What are Entrancing Enchanments? Was Madam Poppy asking for it's definition or examples of it. Alyssa decided to try answering the first possibility. So she raised her hand and answered. "Madam Poppy, they are charms that make people fall into a trance and you can make them do whatever you want them to."

Violet was already getting really excited about this seminar lesson. She giggled slightly at the teacher's behaviour. It was as if she was in a dream state. "Madam Poppy, I think the entrancing spells make the person become in a hypnotic state, like this" Violet made herself look sleepy and unfocused swaying back and forth. "It could make the person not know what in their surroundings or make them deeply fall in love with someone like a Love Potion perhaps?"

Ella nodded at the older boy, taking a seat next to him. "Yup, we worked together during pygmy puff bowling...which was quite fun. You're the duck guy, right?" She was pretty sure he was, Captain Ducky Duck had made quite the impression on Barnabus, who seemed to be jealous of the captain puff. "Oh, I'm Ella..." You know, just as a reminder
Ella smiled at the woman in pink told her to call her Madam Poppy. The name definitely suited her. She seemed quite cheerful and Ella instantly felt a little more at ease. Now about the question...what exactly were entrancing enchantments? Ella raised her hand, chancing a guess. "Madam Poppy, are entrancing enchantments ones that hypnotize people...I mean the people go into a trance and are kind of are at the mercy of whoever has cast the enchantment?"

Amelia raised her brow It wasn't often that she had instructors like this. In fact, she couldn't remember anyone being like that. Not feeling very comfortable using some of the suggested titles, she settled on the one that seemed best. She raised her hand now. "Madame Poppy, they do what their name suggests. The person that the spell was cast on is in an entranced state. Oh, and it's purple!" And purple is the best colour.
Boogy flavored WHAT!? Evelyn tried very hard to keep the distaste off her face. Would it be okay if she walked out the class right now?
"Okay. Madam Poppy." Evelyn said, with a dry smile. Why? Why did she decide to attend this class? She had a feeling that it was going to be horrible. AND, why on earth did she keep giggling all the time. It's CREEPY, Poppy.
Evelyn raised her hand and said, "Prof--um..Madam Poppy, Entrancing enchantments are charms that are used to entrance people.." DUH. "..and they are purple in color." That's all she knew.
”The horror!” Poppy stomped her foot. ”They all ought to be pink in color, wouldn’t you agree? Well, it doesn’t really matter. Some are purple in color, dear darling, but not all.” She finished with a giggle before moving to someone else.

Because HELLO! they were tricky and could help criminals.
”Very good point! Some are used to, as you put it, ‘take the attention off people’s minds.’” Poppy thought the girl was done speaking, but just as she turned to someone else the girl continued. Must be a Ravenclaw. ”Well…” Poppy giggled and covered her mouth. ”I won’t tell if you won’t!” She winked and giggled a little more. ”We will talk about the dangers of Entrancing Enchantments in a second. FIRST,” She shrieked, holding her sausage index finger high in the air, ”we must establish what they are so we can make ourselves aware of what dangers they pose. Teach them or entrance them???? Really. She already felt her brain damaged.
”Yes, good, but try to think of what it means to ‘entrance’ someone. It’s not that simple. If it were, you could get a house elf to teach it!” She said and burst into a fit of giggles at her own joke.

”Some good answers, some bad answers. Let’s review everything that has been said and come up with a proper definition for Entrancing Enchantments.” She giggled and moved to the front of the classroom. ”Charms are a type of spell that modifies an object’s behavior, correct? Entrancing Enchantments is a branch of charms, which means they alter the behavior or something, and that something being a person’s mood!
“Entrancing Enchantments will put a person or animal into a trance of certain mood. For example, the Cheering Charm, you are probably all familiar with, is an Entrancing Enchantment. It puts the target into a trance of cheer, but if that person is very, very sad the charm will eventually wear off and the person will be sad again. It’s not permanent and it doesn’t change the nature of the emotion, only alters the mood.
“As someone mentioned, Entrancing Enchantments are often related to love! Most Entrancing Enchantments are love related, but not all. I must admit I am quite surprised, and pleased, that so few of you knew this.”
She moved towards the board and began writing on it as she lecture. ”There are two large groups into which Entrancing Enchantments are organized. Autogenous and Heterogenous.
Autogenous is a self-cast Entrancing Enchantment. For example, the Flattery Charm, if you cast this on yourself, then anything you say to others will sound like a compliment, and they will be flattered, causing them to have a ‘butterfly-in-stomach’ feeling. You would be the mediator for the charm’s effect.
Heterogenous is a target-cast Entrancing Enchantment. For example, the Cheering Charm, you must cast it on someone else, and they will be cheerful, but their cheerfulness will not directly affect others.”
She took a deep breath and adjusted her jacket before continuing. ”Now, there are four different groups to categorize Entrancing Enchantments, and they are Pragma, Storge, Eros, and Agape.
Pragma will inflict delight, happiness, peace, and harmony. A good example is the Cheering Charm.
Storge will inspire friendship, loyalty, and trust. These are very rarely potent on humans.
Eros are related to romance, passion, and infatuation, like the Flattery Charm.
Agape will cause target to love the caster unconditionally. They are dangerous and difficult to perform. Only two witches have known to use them successfully!
This is how we, Entrancing Enchanters, categorize them. So, for example, the Flattery Charm is an Autogenous-Eros E.E. and the Cheering Charm is a Pagma-Heterogenous. Got it?" She smiled and giggled.
"It is important for me to emphasize that these charms only inspire, influence and, for the lack of a better word, cover up emotions, NOT REPLACE THEM! In other others, you can use these to influence someone else, but not control them. This doesn't mean they aren't dangerous, but just like any other spell, with the exception of the Unforgivable Curses, it depends on the occasion. With that being said, I want to make sure that you can make good judgement before teaching them to you.
So, tell me, knowing what you know about them, in what occasion might an Entrancement Enchantment may be useful and appropriate?"

Louisa's quill was drilling on the parchment as she struggled to write every single word of the lecture, not that it was so important and could affect her OWLs but she would take advantage of attending the special class.
After the question, her hand was up in the air, "Autogenous-Pragma.." She definitely needed to read them off the board, "..can be used in exams perhaps? To ease off the tension especially if your whole future depends on them."

There was a first time for everything though...Shaking it off, she pulled her notebook towards her, copying down the notes from the lecture. Then she thought about the question, a little nervous to answer it. "Well Pragma would be good for people who have to deal with people for their job. That way if they are sick or sad or angry, they can still deal with the customers and make them have a good experience." She said softly, not quite looking in Madam Poppy's eyes.

He was a exquisite young man?! ... Wait... Was that bad or good? He thought it must be the latter for she answered his answer with the same enthusiasm. Daichi's face beamed like it always did when he got an question right and leaned back in his chair when Ella spoke to him. He was about to talk to her when Auntie snapped at the poor hufflepuff. Well... She IS right, this is a class. He would talk to her later.
As Auntie began to talk again, Daichi leaned forward in his chair and took his muggle pen to write down notes. But the more she talked, the more confused he got and when weird words came out of her mouth the Slytherin simply stared at her. His expression blank, showing that not all information had gone through.
Scratching his head, Daichi looked at his half scribbled parchment with confused eyes before looki.g back up at Auntie. "huh?" he blinked and it was his most intelligent response. He is NOT stupid though! Just. ... A little sloooow sometimes. And his attention span usually faded away when he was giving information that was too long for him. And the woman did talk alot!

"While there is nothing wrong with wanting to lift someone's spirits, but you must be cautions of when to do it. For example, you wouldn't want to make someone happy during a funeral of a recently deceased family member. It's important to let people mourn and such, so, yes, you can, but you it needs to be a specific occasion." She said and winked at the girl.

"That would be heterogenous, little darling. Autogenous does not affect the target, it only affects those the target comes in contact with. For example, if you cast a heterogenous love E.E. on yourself, then you will fall in love with yourself, most likely. If you cast an autogenous love E.E. on yourself, others who come in contact with you will fall in love with you. Does that make sense? I know, I know..." She sighed and waved her hand. "It can be a little tricky, but you will have your eureka moment. Your example, nonetheless, is very valid. Entrancing Enchantments that help ease off tension and help relax are some of the most common after love-related and happiness-related charms! "

Phew, that was a lot of talking... [/color]
By the time the woman had finished speaking, Vashti was sure she was never going to be able to use her hand again, what with all the notes she had tried to quickly write down. It was even difficult to read all those scribbles she'd made on the paper. She'd probably have to go through her notes again later that day and rewrite it all. At least it would give her more time away from studying for her NEWTs, which was sort of a positive, even if she was still using that time for school-related stuff.
The Ravenclaw set her quill now for a moment and tried to relax her cramped writing hand as she considered Madam Poppy's question. When would an Entrancement Enchantment be appropriate to use? Hmm...
She raised her hand. "You could use a Pragma-Heterogenous spell on people who are fighting or arguing if you wanted them to stop, since Pragma can influence feelings of peace and harmony."

This woman. She was mental. Seriously. Either that or she at the cheering charm for breakfast everyday. Which really wouldn't surprise Ellie. She had just been staring at the pink woman for a while that she hadn't realized she was giving instruction. It was just... weird.
Ellie scribbled her notes down in a notebook while Madam Pricklepot went oooon and on about this stuff. Just when her hand started cramping, the large woman stopped talking. Ellie sighed and set her pen down. Now, in what occasion might an Entrancement Enchantment be useful?
Ellie raised her hand. "Well, maybe if you forget or... just don't do a homework assignment, you can cast the Flattery Charm on yourself and hope to flatter your professor enough to let it slide." Not a bad idea, actually.

It's...Kurumi Hollingberry...not Kara Hollerberg...
Kurumi sat in her seat, momentarily distracted by the mispronunciation of her name. It had put the Muggle Studies professor to shame really. She had been called Karumi Hollingberg before by her, but Madam Poppy had taken this to a whole new level.
When the question of how to define Entrancing Enchantments was asked, Kurumi remained silent. She really only new basics and was unable to define the type of magic without using the same words to define it....which really defeated the purpose of defining it at all. So, she opted to just sit back and listen until each student's answer was addressed and then she took her quill to her parchment and wrote down notes...lots and lots of notes. Why was it that all the seminar people liked to talk? They ALL talked SO much.
Hand flying over her parchment, Kurumi furiously attempted to keep up with what all was being said and finding herself unable to take a break to perhaps offer up an answer herself. Cover up emotions... Kurumi paused in her note taking for a moment. Autogenous.... She could block out all the pain and despair she was feeling right now, right? That is what that implied? Even if it was covering it up and temporary, it sounded better than crying all the time. Madam Poppy's little explanation about allowing people to mourn went in one ear and out the other as she thought about this. Using these spells to control her mood and therefore perhaps controlling her ability? Sounded like a win to her even if her logic was flawed.
Not really feeling as though she had anything else to offer, her thoughts currently swamped with convoluted notions of how to use these charms, the prefect remained in her seat taking careful notes as she continued to listen.

Emrys felt like he'd been slapped in the face. There was no hiding the look of absolute shock, and shame, on his face as he dropped his hand and continued to take notes.
Eyes blinking furiously, he bit the inside of his lip to get his mind off the woman's complete dismissal - and humiliating response - and focus on getting down the information.
He could certainly use a heterogenous pragma right about now...
”No duh,” Poppy rolled her eyes ”but what does it mean for someone to be ‘entranced’?”
♥ ♥ ♥

'No duh'??????? What kind of PROFESSIONAL response was THAT?!! MERLIN.
Ellie did some EYE ROLLING of her OWN. And if PPP didn't know what 'entranced' meant, should she REALLY be teaching Entrancing Enchantments?!!
By the time PPPP was finished explaining, the Sixth year could barely remember what the woman had started with. But basically, she was asking for when one of these enchantments would be useful? HMMMMM.
"That S- one," Storage or whatever it was, "Could be used in situations where you need to meet new people, and are particularly shy or if you need to get along with someone you're not too fond of, yes?" Sounded right to her. A charm that inspired friendship? "Or perhaps with an unruly animal you need to tame or work with." Gain its trust, see?
Ellie knew what she was talking about. Sort of.

EEeeppp....Alyssa almost ducked under the table when Madam Poppy yelled at her. She wasn't even thinking about the Imperious Charm when she gave her answer. She was actually thinking like a love potion kind of charm. But Alyssa realized that she now had to be careful about how she worded her next sentence. She carefully thought out her answer before slowly raising her hand and getting ready to duck if Madam Poppy decided to throw something at her this time. "Uh Madam Poppy I think that the Autogenous Eros Flattery Charm might work well with people who are angry with you. When you use that, they won't be anymore." and quickly got ready to duck after giving her answer.

The teacher's giggling was starting to really annoy Violet, but she kept her mouth shut from saying something rude to her. Instead she raised her arm slowly to answer the teacher's next question. Violet had already been overwhelmed by all the information the teacher gave, but she gave it her best try. "Er, Madam Poppy, maybe you could use a storge-heterogenous spell on a burglar or something so that you can put them in a trance to act nice and might even get away from them if they were trying to rob you?" Violet knew that dangerous witches and wizards were smarter than that, but you never know if there is a witch or wizard that isn't as smart as the seemed.
”Very good answer! You can use it to distract and even daze someone. What this little mister is doing is demonstrating the effects of the Entrancing Enchantment to the class. A round of applause for him!” She put her wand down on her table and clapped enthusiastically.

”Very good example! You can use it to end a dispute, or at least ease the tension until the authorities arrive. This way none of the people engaged in the fight will be harmed.” Poppy gave the girl a nod and a pat on the head.

Poppy pursed her lips and crossed her arms. ”Is it your hearing or your judgment that is impaired? You are supposed to be suggesting ways in which E.E.’s are useful and, key word, APPROPRIATE!!!” She banshee-shrieked the last word for emphasis, just in case the girl didn’t hear her. ”Using it to escape punishment is not appropriate!” Ugh, go figure, another Ravenclaw! Smarty-pants… NOT WITH POPPY PRUNELLA PRICKLEPOT!!!

”Someone doesn’t need to be charmed to be put into a trance…” Poppy commented raising an eyebrow. Yeah… she was not eating cookies from someone who looks all mummified and creepy like that. Blerg! Shudders.

”PRECISELY!” For this answer, Poppy jump high in the air—a whole half an inch off the ground. ”These charms are very, very, veeeeeeery useful against unruly creatures. There have been many attempts to use Entrancing Enchantments to tame Dark Creatures, like werewolves and dementors, but they have all failed. There is a charm, or two, that works wonders on Grindylows, and another, I believe, for Pixies. Most of them, however, will work against common creatures. The bigger the creature, the more difficult it is, of course. Very good answer, little darling!”

”No, no, no, no, no, sweetie. Like I said, these charms do not replace the person’s emotions. So, if you used the Flattery Charm on someone who is angry with you, they would still be angry with you, but they would demonstrate otherwise. For as long as the charm is in effect, anyway.”

”I like the way you’re thinking, and that could work, but it would be very difficult. Storge Entrancing Enchantments have been mostly developed through their use in creatures, and they don’t always work in the same way for humans. I believe it was Amanda Milestone who invented a Loyalty Inducing Charm but she studied it on dogs, so when she tried to cast it on a human it caused them to bark, bite, and, well… pee everywhere. It made them behave like dogs, too, so it’s hard, but not impossible! At your age, your best bet would be to use a Heterogenous-Pragma and hope to Merlin it works!”
Most of your answers included dealing with nasty people, putting a stop to dangerous disputes and confrontations, relaxing before an event, like an exam, cheering for your team, lifting someone's spirits, etc. These are all super-duper fabulous response!" She giggled and winked at her class.
"Now we must address some of the limits and dangers associated with them. First of all, all of these, with the exception of Agape, are temporary. Sooner or later they will fade away. Secondly, some of them tend to have nasty side effects, but unless you are trying something funny you should be okay. Finally, these can be dangerous. How, you ask? Well, love-related ones, mostly. This is the messy department. People do stupid things when they are in love, even if it's just a temporary crush, so you should always be careful. It wouldn't cause a third wizard war, but it could embarrass someone and even damage their reputation!" Of course, Poppy didn't care about any of these things, but Tate would ruin her reputation, and rightly so, if she had students running around and messing with people's emotions mindlessly.
"Phew, so there you have it. Any questions before we move on to the practice portion of our class? Everyone got down all the thermology, everyone understand what they mean?If you need something cleared up ask before we begin practice. In the mean time, I will pass these around so you can keep them for your records. You will need it for homework.
SPOILER!!: History of Entrancing Enchantments
Entrancing Enchantments date back to Ancient Rome at around 55-45B.C. There is some indication that the first person to ever use these was Cleopatra VII, generally known simply as Cleopatra. This is very difficult to prove, but we have some poorly kept stones with incantations scribed in Egyptian. These stones were, however, found in Europe sometime during 50A.D., which is a long time after Cleopatra’s death, but they date at around 40B.C, during which Cleopatra was very much alive. Additionally, the words that most commonly appear in these texts are “Isis,” the goddess Cleopatra was associated with, and “love.” And finally, the two surviving charms from these documents further prove that Cleopatra invented them. For this reason, Cleopatra is celebrated as the mother of Entrancing Enchantments.
By 50.A.D., however, these charms were already growing in popularity, so it’s safe to assume that they had been circulating privately for several decades. They continued to grow in popularity until the fall of the Roman Empire, roughly around the late 400’s A.D. After that they were banned. Witchcraft became a serious offense and so the practice of any type of magic was prohibited. It is, of course, certain that they continued to be practiced privately and secretly throughout the Middle Ages, because when Entrancing Enchantments show up again they have evolved significantly.
They reappearance again, centuries later, during the Renaissance, but are most commonly seen during the Elizabethan Era, from 1558 to 1603. There is an abundant amount of evidence indicating that from a very early age Elizabeth Tudor practice Entrancing Enchantments and we have possession of several of the charms she invented. It is possible that her mother, Anne Boleyn had some knowledge of these, but she was a squib so she couldn’t have performed them herself. Elizabeth evolved these charms, not only by making powerful love-related spells, but by creating charms related to all emotions and states of being. It is because of her that they are called “Entrancing Enchantments.” To this day, she remains one of the pioneers for Entrancing Enchantments. After Elizabeth’s death, James I’s came to the throne and he was an avid persecutor of witches, so once again we reach a dark age for Entrancing Enchantments and magic in general.
Now, don’t go thinking that Entrancing Enchantments is a woman’s thing only! The third most important and influential figure in these charms shows up several centuries later, in the mid-1800s. He is the famous composer and pianist, Franz Liszt. Mr. Liszt took these charms to a whole new level. Yes, he perfected the use of autogenous Entrancing Enchantments and their use on animate and inanimate objects. He was even able to compose charms into his music, charming some girls into insanity! We have records of audience members fighting for Mr. Liszt’s gloves at the end of his performances, and people who testified that “Liszt's playing raised the mood of audiences to a level of mystical ecstasy” (Walker, Virtuoso Years). As a result, Franz Liszt is considered the third most important figure in Entrancing Enchantments.
So, there you have it, a brief history of these charms, from Antiquity to the Romantic Period. A timeline of about two thousand years with these three figures, Cleopatra VII, Elizabeth I, and Franz Liszt, as the most important contributors to the field of Entrancing Enchantments.
OOC: Practice will be posted in a few hours... Not sure exactly when, but soon.
Mortified. It was like he was back in that awful primary school, only this time it was a teacher doing the open mocking. All he was trying to do was take his notes.
His eyes stung and he pressed just a bit too hard on his quill, snapping it in half as he tried to take down the last few notes. His cheeks burned, both from the embarrassment and the anger.
If it wouldn't have meant standing up in front of the whole class and walking the length of the room, he would have walked out right then.

Ellie's eyes grew wide at the woman's exclamation and...what was that? A spasm? A...jump? Was that supposed to be a jump? That was pathetic.
Overall, though, she was fairly pleased with herself for being oh-so RIGHT for once. Especially after the eye-roll she'd received from her previous answer. Not that impressing PPP was important to her or anything it just...felt nice to be correct.
However, what PPP added at the end did NOT sit well with her. "Ellie," she said, "My name's Ellie." NOT 'Little Darling'. Do NOT call her 'Little Darling'. EVER. Okay?
Okay.
Good.
Her eyes lowered to the desk and the paper the woman put onto it. It had FAR too much writing, truth be told. And homework? WHY did they have HOMEWORK?!
UGH.
She eyed Emrys and gave him a look of distaste. Work was gross, right? Right. History was gross, right? Right.
Ugh.

First, lashing out at them, what was up with that? And the thought of making people feel how you want them to, no matter if it was good intentioned; still creeped Glenn out quite a bit.
The badger stayed silent as "Auntie" corrected gave feedback on their answers. She doodled in a corner of her page as she waited for her to continue the lesson.
Wait. Homework?
Glenn let out a sigh.
They already had heaps of homework to do already. She was really starting to dislike this pink lady.
Neththeless, Glenn read over the piece of paper. Looking out over the parchment to frown again at this giggling mess. Laughing was fine. But withen reason. This lady was crazy.
