The beginning of term was upon them and even though the first week or so had already passed and everyone was practically settled in, the first Divination lesson of the term had yet to happen. Today was the day though and the trapdoor to the classroom was open and the ladder was lowered.
Professor Elwood sat excitedly at her desk by the chalkboard awaiting the students. The room was set up like it usually was, a few seats around little tables among the risers; the windows opened up to allow what slight breeze there was to flow in. What other point was there to be in a tower classroom?
The cutbacks the rest of the Castle seemed to be having didn't seem to have effected this room, at least on the surface. Go ahead and take a seat while you wait for the Professor to start the lesson.

Divination. Juliet needs to pay more attention to this class because she barely knows how the divination world works. Tarot cards and tea stuff makes her confused but kudos to all seers and to professor elwood, they can read your future through these stuff-- that's a gift.
She entered the classroom with a smile on her face as she saw the professor "Good morning professor" she greeted and took a seat.
While Kahlan didn't know that much about divination, she'd enjoyed what she'd seen of it from her mother... though cases in which she was invited in for things like that never happened too often.
Entering the classroom, she smiled "Hello Professor" she greeted with a quick nod before sitting herself down.

Theo did enter Divination yawning. Not because he was particularly tired, but because this wasn't a lesson that overly excited him, and not to mention how terrible he was at predicting the future and stuff. It was pretty cool, and Theo had yet to discover why he disliked this lesson so much.
At least there was a breeze in here, though! FRESH AIR was the best thing in Theo's life right now.
He took a seat near the middle of the table and pulled out a few of the necessities from his bag. Parchment... quill, etc. "Hi, Professor Elwood." She looked excited, so that was promising, he supposed.

She walked into the class and past the... eh, professor? She glanced back at the cheery looking female. This was the professor? Well you can argue that..she is right at the table. She caught a few people muttering wishes to her. Wouldn't hurt.
"Erm... good morning?"
She continued her walking past and went to find a desk. We'll know soon if she is the one. We will. Yesh, yesh.
Carsyn reached the top of the stairs of the Divination tower and spotted the ladder. She scowled at it for a full minute and a half before making a move to climb the darn thing. Why can't they just make learning easy? They have to add an obstacle course on the path to each class? Ugh. With her trademark sigh, Carsyn secured her bag by wearing it cross-body style and began her ascent up the ladder rungs.
Upon reaching the top, Carsyn readjusted her uniform and bag, then focused her sights on the room around her. This was unlike any classroom she'd ever imagined. The little tables were a surprise, though upon a few moments reflection, she decided they were a pleasant one. And certainly a sensible one for the subject of Divination, she supposed.
"Hello Professor Elwood," Carsyn spoke aloud, but barely above a whisper. She then hurried to step up on to the first riser and find a seat at an empty table. She was too painfully shy to ask if she could sit with people she didn't already know.
Kommoto walked in, and looked around. The classroom was pretty full already, but he managed to find a seat on the far end. While he walked across the classroom, he walked by the proffesor behind her desk.
"'Morning." He said as he walked by.
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Oakey headed up to Divinations and looked up the Ladder that lead to the classroom, he smiled. This smiled was because of how often he had used one over the summer. This one wasn't going to fall backwards on him though. He hoped the Bishops did not take it down yet while he was away.
Oakey popped open the trapdoor and looked around the class for an open chair. Conviently there was one at a small round table just beside his roommate Jory! "Hello Professor Elwood" Oakey gave the the Divinations Professor a nod then took the seat beside his fellow Hufflepuff. "Hi Jory, so was it you who cleaned our dorm room a few weeks ago?"
He was wondering how their room, had ended up so neat and tidy compared to everywhere else in the dorm, and in the common room. The only possible explanations were Jory, or Toodles finally got around to some cleaning.
Laura walked into the classroom and smiled. "Good Day Professor Elwood." Laura looked straight at the Professor. "Did you have a lovely summer Professor?" Laura hoped that it had happened, now all she had to do was find her sister so they could sit together.
Although not a big fan of small spaces, Tora did think that the trapdoor into divination was kind of cool. Once she got above though she started to feel the pressure of small-ness. Oh no. She quickly took a seat nearest the window so it wasn't too bad at all.
Oops. She forgot to say hello to the professor! She jumped to her feet and smiled at the professor. "Hello, Professor Elwood!" She said before sitting again.
She was curious to see if she would like this class. Actually she was curious about the future, but wasn't sure she should be. She knew people could make awful mistakes like that. Besides, could this Divination even work really? She might be good at it, since well, she did know a lot about Astronomy and that had something to with Divination right? Oh well. She would just have to wait and find out.
She opened her messenger bag and pulled out her ink, quill and notebook. Notes, Notes, Notes! She titled a new page "Divination" and then looked out the window waiting for class to begin.

Oooh. Divination. Although Kat had to admit that she wasn't as good in this class as the others, she found it rather cool and sorta interesting. The prefect thought Professor Elwood, too, was awesome and she had respect for her and the subject she taught. Whatever they were going to learn today, maybe it would be entertaining and something Kat would understand. Hopefully worth the flight of stairs she had to use in order to arrive here.
"Hello Professor," the Slytherin greeted with a smile. She then went to take a seat in the middle of the classroom. She didn't want to be in front nor at the back, so she settled somewhere in there and waited for the other students to arrive. What were they going to learn today, huh?

"Awesome" It was great the Jory was on top of things with all the cleaning. "So long as it's clean enough to sleep in, we need to keep at it too. Nothing stays clean forever." Thank Merlin for Astronomy Home Work. GeeGee would be very proud of all the cleaning he was doing. "My Summer? It was too relaxing, I kind of wish we still had those internships to go back to at Gringott's. How about you?"
How was his Head Boy Status? He wasn't so sure on that yet, he and Renesmee were still recovering from the outburst that the Headmistress laid out on them. "It's fine, I guess." he managed to respond at least.
The first week of seventh year had been busy, and with that business came hard work. The Hufflepuff was exhausted though and all she wanted was the weekend so that she could have a lazy day. A day when she was not needed by anyone. The weekend was yet to come though and where Nessie needed to be was divination.
After climbing up the ladder, the red head entered the classroom and just like she'd expected it to be, it looked pretty much the same as before. Interesting, considering the current happenings.
"Good Morning, Professor." She greeted with a polite nod then went to look for a seat to sit.
Professor Elwood did not have to wait long for the first head to poke through the opening of the trapdoor and she crossed her legs in her chair as she awaited her students.

Ascanius smirked, ruffled his hair out of his face and approached his Professor, "Good morning, ma'am. You look lovely today." Bam. Charm on. Mmk, time to sit down and get settled.
The next student to enter the classroom was a boy,much older than a first year but he was not someone she recognized. Had he just not taken Divination until this term? "Good morning, how are--"

Calista was a tad taken aback by the 'lovely' comment; the boy knew she was an adult AND his Professor right? "Well, um thank you, but a simple good morning would probably be best." he cheeks were a bit red but she did smile politely at him.
It was a compliment regardless.

"Hello Alexa." Callie didn't quite catch what the Gryffindor had said right after her initial greeting but it didn't seem like she was meant to really. The blonde smiled at her anyways and answered her last question. "I did, although it was spent trying to come up with some ideas for what to do with Divination on an even tighter budget than before. We will manage though."

"Beezus, it's good to see you again too. Was you're summer nice?" Elwood greeted the girl fondly with her nickname, the one the Prefect had taken to writing on her homework assignments. She had always been a good Divination student in the past and it was nice to see her back after her OWL performance.

Silly question she knew no professor would say no, but she asked anyway. Turning she went to find her usual seat near the front and get her things ready for class.
"Hello Minerva! Welcome back!" She smiled brightly as the Hufflepuff first greeted her. "Yes my summer was nice but I did actually miss you all." So in a way she was ready to come back but vacation was vacation. Her return would have just been nicer had she not had to deal with cut-backs.

He gave a nod to Taylor, Nigel, and Beezus, then walked over to the empty seat next to Minerva. Lowering himself in the chair, he pulled his messenger bag to the side and gave her a grin, "Hey, Min.." He vaguely wondered what form of Divination they'd be studying today.. that eye one they did last term sounded good to him right about now, as long as they were looking at actual people's eyes this time..
The new Ravenclaw male Prefect was the next to enter the class and Calista was happy that he came up to greet her. "Hello Ethan, the plant is doing excellently up here in the tower." He would have to stop by again soon to check on it for himself.

Marcus Branxton, the boy's mother was working so hard to try and make these cut-backs as painless as possible. Bless that woman, she couldn't say the same for all the members of the Board though.
Professor Professor? "Elwood." The blonde smiled brightly at the boy. "And good day to you too Mr. Branxton. Glad to see you've decided to continue with Divination this term."

Her smile widened when she saw that Mack was already inside the classroom and walked to the other girl, “Is it good that I sit beside you?” Asked Sonea still smiling.
"Welcome, and hello to you too." Professor Elwood grinned brightly at the new Slytherin.

Shrugging she just turned her attention back to Professor Elwood. "Good day isn't it Professor Elwood?" She asked in her chipper as ever tone. Tipping her head up she just let the breeze tickle her cheek smiling brightly. The breeze felt great, awesome really.
A rather chipper Ravenclaw was next to enter the class. "It is a nice day, isn't it? Good to see you again Miss Johanson."

"Hello, hello." The girl seemed pretty excited for the upcoming lesson and that was promising. Callie was glad to have young students ready to take the place of the avid, older students who will graduate one day soon.

Second it was taught by a woman, a presence that this Claw is used to most of the male species still stresses her out. Thirdly its Divination, she was raised to decipher oracles even before she could walk.
Not that she was still any good at deciphering oracles but that’s beside the point.
“Good day Professor Elwood.” this waif-like blonde greeted the other blond, before carefully making her way to one of the seats.
"Good day Miss Llywelyn." Elwood greeted the young blonde girl. She had mentioned before that she was from a community well-learned in the Divining Arts so Callie was glad that the girl had signed up for SNAC this term, she may have some interesting things to add.

Callie couldn't help but notice the confused look on the new Gryffindor's face as she entered the classroom and walked right past her and then thought about it before greeting her. "Hello dear, welcome." All smiles.

The next girl didn't seem confused, just shy. "Hello dear, welcome to Hogwarts." She was a new Ravenclaw, one of the ones she had noticed at the Sorting Ceremony.

"Hello Mr. Gunter. Congratulations on the Head Boy position." It was really an honor and the Hufflepuff should be proud. She was also glad that he had made the effort to attend today, the boy was not often gracing her lessons with his presence.

She opened her messenger bag and pulled out her ink, quill and notebook. Notes, Notes, Notes! She titled a new page "Divination" and then looked out the window waiting for class to begin.
"Welcome, welcome." Professor Elwood gladly greeted the new Ranveclaw and watched as she looked around the room, taking in her surroundings. Her classroom was definitely one of the more interesting and creative ones in the Castle, at least in her opinion.

I am excited to see many new faces and for those people, I should introduce myself. My name is Professor Elwood and I will be your guide on the amazing journey that is Divination." She clasped her hands together, setting her bangles off into their usual jingling fury.

"For those of you who have taken my lessons before today will remember that I've tried my best to give you all a well-rounded view of the Noble Art, rather than the mainstream practices we all are acquainted with. Today, though I've decided that, although it can be considered mainstream, the activity we will be doing is one I've decided is something all good Diviners should have in their pockets." Not literally though because that could be disastrous and messy.
"So what can you all tell me about Tea Leaf Reading?" She grinned excitedly at the faces looking up at her.

Laura raised her hand and smiled. "Professor you have to make sure there is just a little bit of tea in the bottom of the cup with the leaves and the leaves make this weird pattern which will then form something like a grin or grim of what ever it is and you use your book to decide what is happen." Laura finished off by saying, she wasn't sure if she was right but she decided to guess anyway.

Tea leaves? She'd heard about those before, somewhere. It most likely wasn't from something she'd read since...you know...but she did remember hearing a bit about it which meant she wouldn't have to wait for other people to talk then give her own variation of their responses like what she did every time she didn't know the answer.
Good good.
Her hand shot into the air and she wiggled her fingers around a bit. This was how you caught the attention of a Professor, obviously. It was almost as effective as falling off your seat but she didn't think her robes could take the dirt, especially not since she'd apparently have to be the one to wash them.
"It started way back in the day, I think it was the medieval times but I'm not sure and it was really just with fortune tellers reading things from the splatters of wax, lead and that kind of material then it went and...evolved...? Yeah, evolved into tea leaf reading."
At least, that's what she heard.

Carsyn listened to the replies of some of the other students and tried to offer something new that hadn't yet been covered by any of them, "When reading tea leaves, it is really important to inspect the interior of your cup from all angles, turning it around and such, to be sure that one gets a complete understanding of what the shapes are telling us. If you limit yourself to only viewing the cup from one direction, you could miss something incredibly important that could change your whole impression of the reading."
Tea leaf reading? Haruka vaguely remembers her Obaa-chan doing something like that for the neighbors when she was little. "You're supposed to drink the tea, swirl it around in the cup, and then you look for images made by the remaining tea leaves." Is that right? That's what she remembers, though she's sure there was more to it than that.
Eliza sat her quill down and raised her hand to answer. "Tea leaf reading can be done for yourself or for a friend, but basically you put some loose tea leaves into a cup with hot water, drink the tea through your teeth, and then look at the shapes the tea leaves settle into inside the cup. Each shape can mean different things to different people, but there are standardized meanings for a lot of them." She didn't want to explain it too much and take the chance for other students to answer, so she stopped there. And as cliche as tea leaf reading was when it came to Divination, she still enjoyed it because it meant they got to have tea in class, for one, and for two - it was one of the easier things to do as far as she was concerned. Some of the things they'd learned last year had been a bit difficult for her to interpret. The footprints for one seemed especially abstract and farfetched in her opinion, but she knew some people believed in that stuff so she tried not to knock it too badly.

Ella nodded at Professor Elwood and gave her a small smile at her question. Tryouts were going great and her housemates were really talented which was exciting for her. Quidditch talk could wait though, yeah? As the Professor had just asked the first question.
Tea leaf reading, huh? What did Ella know about that? Hmmmm. "Professor, I've read that as hot water is poured over the tea leaves, the drinker needs to stir and concentrate on a question they'd like an answer to."

Minerva smiled as Ethan had sat down next to her. Smiling at him, she started pulling out her parchment and quill to begin class. Once Professor Elwood started Minerva smiled a little. Tea Leaf reading, now that was something she was interested in, but they hadn't done it before at school.
As she remembered the book Ethan had bought her over the summer in the collection she had found, she put up her hand. "Professor, I read that there can be three different kinds of cups to be used for tea leaf readings. If I remember correctly there is the symbol cup, zodiac cup, and umm..well." she wasn't sure she remembered the third one. What was it again, "Oh and the playing cards cup, I think.." was that right she wasn't 100% sure, but it sounded right.
Her hand shot up into the air. PICK ME PICK ME PICK ME, PLEEEEASE, PROFESSOR. Sflkjgk. Okay. She couldn't hold it in any longer. Not that she'd lasted very long. Approximately .398476 of a second. "Tasseography, though more commonly known as tea leaf reading, is really cool and was more than likely established in Europe." She settled back into her chair, satisfied.

"The art of reading tea leaves to predict future events is called Tessomancy," Alice voiced, raising her hand as she did so. Had no one mentioned that yet? "The name is derived from the French word for teacups, tasse, I think." Everyone else had pretty much covered the other basics, so she fell silent and left her answer at that for now, glancing around at all the other people stating facts about tea leaf reading.

Tea leaves? They were reading tea leaves? Jake leaned back in his chair, folding his arms while he listened to a few other students answer. After a moment he remembered something and raised his hand. "Can't you use the negative space, too? Not just the leaves? Like, if there's a picture made on the cup surrounded by the remaining leaves... that counts?" That was backwards, he knew, but couldn't it still work?
