Being October already, this is hardly the first DADA lesson that students have been subject to, assuming none have played hookie. But where the former lessons were basic spells, review and practice, this is the first time the room has looked so different.
Walls and crates of varying sizes have been carefully placed and positioned throughout the practice hall in a labyrinth-like design. The shortest wall stands a good seven feet, preventing any curious students from peeking over. The tops of trees and tall bushes can be seen poking over the walls as students file in, as if curious as to their presence.
At the entrance to the labyrinth, Professor Dakest has perched on top of a crate, his legs crossed under him as an otter patronus darts this way and that, sliding and frolicking along the open floor between the Professor and the Practice Hall door with unbound glee.
File in, take a seat somewhere on the floor and feel free to interact with the otter patronus as you wait for the rest of your classmates to arrive. The lesson will begin shortly.
------------------------------------------------ OOC: Hi all! While this is our first offical class, please remember that it is already October IC, so there would have been several DADA classes thus far.
Feel free to RP your student arriving and settling down We will move along in about 12-13 hours. Lastly, please read the Rules before posting.

They got to make a patronus! Janelle was beyond excited. She couldn't wait to give it a try. Oh she was sooo going to get this spell right, if she had to practice it a hundred million times. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that.
The first thing that Janelle had to do was think of her inspiration......something that made her happier than happy. A couple of ideas came into her head, but she dismissed them as not quite powerful enough. No matter what she thought of, she always kept coming back to her family. Her mother, father, sister and brother. She was happiest when they were all together. That was something that didn't happen too often lately. No matter what happened in Janelle's life, the frequent moves......always being the new kid, somehow she was always happy when the whole family was together.
OK, that was her happy thought. Now she needed the happiest of the happy memories. And there it was. Janelle remembered being happiest when her family was still living in California before her father was deployed and they moved to France. Before her brother and sister went off to different schools. that was the best time ever. Janelle closed her eyes and remembered. She couldn't help the smile that came to her face. Yes, that was her happiest memory. If she could only transfer that feeling and make the patronus happen.
For a moment, Janelle thought about her sister. She wondered what her happy memory was. She didn't know for sure, but she had a pretty good idea what it might be. Back to the task at hand though. Now that she had her memory, she needed to practice the spell. Then she really needed to work on her concentration. She was going to do this, or else.

Having sat still for a few minutes, holding her wand between her hands and turning it top over tail, there was a huge grin over Marsha’s face. The only problem was that she wasn’t particularly sure which memory the happy, giddy feeling came from.
Thinking about it more, she realised that it all stemmed back to her family. Her loving, protective super awesome Tad. Her protective, supportive, beautiful, hard working Mam. Her gorgeous, if slightly loud, adorable baby sister Alis. The smile that was spreading across her face was almost enough to make her cheeks hurt as she thought about the first time she had held her baby sister after her Mam had given birth. It was, to this day, the only time she was happy to have a September birthday as it meant she got to see Alis growing up for her first year, rather than only seeing her for three weeks.
So, the charm.
Expecto Patronum.
”Ex-pect-o Pa-tro-num.” She made a slight face as she tried again. ”Ex-pect-o Pat-ro-num. Expecto Patronum. Expecto, Patronum.” She said the charm over and over again until she figured she had the same pronounciation as the Ravenclaw Prefect… After all, she said it and she managed to cast a patronus!
Her ferret was super cute! Look at it sitting on one of the guys. She giggled, the joy of her thoughts making her even more excitable and happy than normal.

Marigold was in a grumpy mood already, which was bad because this NEWISH PROFESSOR DUDE SEEMED PRETTY COOL, but Marigold just kinda wanted to hug Eden or Rorie. She didn't know why she wanted either of those people, but that was the kind of mood she was in.
She wrote up a couple of the notes, then put her quill down. A happy memory? Easy peasy, seeing TDK in concert. Man, that was AWESOME. Like, super duper happy. She was already in a better mood, and she hadn't even closed her eyes yet.
Maybe the patronus thing had a point. Even coming up with the happy memory was making her happier. Huh.
But more details. Like how warm the air was, how sticky it seemed, with everyone dancing like crazy, like how she TOTALLY made eye contact with THE West Odessa and it was like, TOTALLY a MOMENT, like how Ascanius took his shirt off which was kinda weird but expected, and how Vesper KILLED IT. And Nigel was just kinda doing his own thing, like normal.
Marigold was sitting there, eyes closed, wide smile, and when she opened her eyes back up, it was to see Sophie Brown's patronus dart around. She gave her friend a big thumbs up.

Patronuses. Brooklyn had been curious about those for awhile, but every word that came out in the discussion only made her feel like maybe she should have followed Agatha toward the door. If it hadn’t gained the attention of the professor, that was. She hardly felt like gaining attention for being a scaredy-cat any time soon, but the happy memory part was going to be the hard part. Not that she didn’t have happy memories. She just figured hers were significantly different from most other people’s, and because of that maybe they wouldn’t work for a Patronus. And she didn’t want to fail. She never wanted to fail. All that was doing was remind her of Charms when she hadn’t gotten the Gryffindor girl very high off the ground.
Bad memories were definitely going to make her fail, and Brooklyn Andrews refused to fail. Except… Ethan had retreated to the corner, leaving her all alone where she’d been seated. Maybe everyone expected her to fail. No, she thought vehemently to herself. She wasn’t going to fail. She just wasn’t going to worry about if she’d get a corporeal Patronus right now. Maybe that would ease her mind. That and she was going to ignore the people around her who were already producing wisps of light or more.
Happy memory. She’d come up with something eventually.

"Expecto... memory," Dot muttered to herself as she watched her classmates around her. Most of them were making faces and not doing much, which was pretty much what she was doing. No, she was also trying to squish!balance her wand between her top lip and her nose, like a very pointy mustache.
It was her thinking posture.
She didn't want a happy memory, since that seemed like something kinda changeable. She wanted to have something grounding. And if she didn't make even a puff of something happen today, she sort of felt like the professor would know and not let her come back. A full corporeal patronus? It wasn't even on the agenda for this fourth year.
So her memory. OH. She had an idea! A little toothless grin had entered her mind.

He couldn't do it. Any of it. Wouldn't be able to cast a patronus. Couldn't even find the right memory. Merlin. Maybe he should've just taken the hint after that OWL score. But no. Zander Adair was a lot of things, but he wasn't a quitter. Unfortunately he was stubborn. Sigh.
So yes he was still sat there on the floor thinking really REALLY hard about this memory thing. He remembered that time with his dad over at the park. No, not strong enough. Or maybe that time in the dueling arena making his first friend? No, not strong enough. He was stumped. Maybe he could find his happiest memory in fighting Peeves with Kevin? But that wasn't really happiness, was it? It was fun and still brought a smile to his face... But again, nothing strong enough.
The only memory that seemed to beat out the rest was the one of his birthday. His birthday, the room of requirement, endless smiling, and some really good pizza. That was the best memory of all. Still made him feel warm on the inside just thinking about it. Maybe that could be the one to do it? It sure gave him some confidence, though being around her always did.

As hard as Norah tried and tried and tried to concentrate on finding a memory happy enough for a patronus, she kept on getting distracted. It wasn't her fault, okay? People were just so INTERESTING and then Sophie Brown cast a patronus and she just about LOST IT. The ability to pay attention, that is. But you know what, that whole paying attention thing was a big lie because she WAS paying attention, just not to what they said she should be paying attention to. So there. It was really okay. Her hazel eyes were wide as she watched the ferret dart around, first to Zander the Prefect Dude: Chief of the Sparkle-Haters, and then to Toby. This magic was CRAZY. Did they know? Sophie Brown created a whole entire ferret that knew who she liked and everything just by thinking about something happy. If that wasn't totally wicked, the Hufflepuff didn't know what was. She turned to watch Sophie instead, wondering if she'd ever be that cool when she was a sixth year. Didn't seem likely, really, but Sophie deserved it a whole lot. Everybody knew that.
It took a hundred and five percent of her willpower to tear her eyes away from the patronus and stare at the floor under her desk for more thinking. She shut her eyes. Think think think. Happy things happy things happy things. Norah thought back to the summer racing her little brothers and winning. Not good enough. She thought back to the kittens with Hayden and being a detective, and back to her first day of Hogwarts and tripping over Mari, and all the times she got hugs, and going to her Gran n' Gramps house, and the time she grew her very own plants when she was little and only stepped on one of them, and the time she earned points and Hufflepuff won the house cup. She tried to hold all of them in her brain at the same time, but even though every now and then her heart gave the good kind of flutter she didn't feel happy enough. This was dumb. She was happy, everybody said so, but suddenly she had to be happy enough and that wasn't fair because 'enough' ruined EVERYTHING. 'Enough' was an unfair word. It was hard to be happy when things were unfair.
The thinking was making her brain hurt, so she went back to watching the patronus. That wasn't just beautiful enough, it was the MOST beautiful. Lucky ferret.
Henric muttered the charm,"Expecto Patronum," for several times so he could remember not to lose concentration. His memories flew back to when the time he first entered his new home, his first teddy bear bestfriend he used to hug every night until he was 7 years old, his dad teaching him how to fish by the lake, volunteering at the orphanage and playing football with them, these were the things that made him happy. Yet, bad memories were always there to haunt him again...how could he forget them? Everytime he tried, the memory would get too vivid, it was hard not to simply notice them. His dark times for when he was destitute and hungry with no memories of where he came from still lingered in his mind.
He sighed, pausing for a while. Henric then turned to look at the others who were trying their best to conjure up their own patronus. Seemed like it was hard for them too...Henric noticed llia was looking at him, he smiled back and gave her a thumbs up to show her that she could do it.
Returning back to his own position,he readied himself again before letting out a determined shout,"Expecto Patronum!!"but failed to produce a mist pf any kind.

Oh good gosh that was a lot to take in. At some point during everyone talking around her the third year and taking out a sheet of parchment and her quill to take down very specific notes. Seriously she wasn't missing anything that was being said especially by the Professor. Casting a Patronus was something she wanted to accomplish for as long as she could remember...probably since the very first time she'd seen one. It was her father whom had cast it and it had resulted in a million questions from the tiny girl over the course of the years. Now though...now she was finally going to get to try it for herself.
With her notes taken she replaced her parchment and quill into her bag. Getting to her feet she moved to an empty space and set her bag along the wall near her feet.
What she needed first was a happy memory. Not just any one would do though it had to be special...one that could she see clearly in her minds eye, feel it, sense it completely like the moment was happening all over again. Taking slow breaths Hady began to go over each memory in turn. Her acceptance letter to Hogwarts, her trophy in dancing, the finalized adoption papers with her parents and her names on it. Shaking her head she knew each of those were happy times but just not the right ones.

It didn't seem properly fair that there were some people already making proper patronuses, and then there were people hitting themselves in the face with their wand. And by that, she meant that she accidentally dropped her wand!stache and tried to catch it and poked herself in the eye.
Sigh.
Anyway. Expecto patronum thing. Dot waved her wand carefully, frowny face out, thinking carefully about the incantation, the wand movement, her memory (grinny baby face), and the fact that of COURSE Sophie could master a patronus. She was perfect. Didn't people know this by now?
Oh, right. Focusing. "Expecto patronum," Dot spoke the incantation clearly, she did the wand motion right, and... nothing happened. Not even the smallest puff of silver.
A slight frown had appeared on Toby's face as he stood there, lost in his thoughts. Though whether it was his 'concentration frown' or his 'frowny frown' wasn't clear, as both were the same (and he had a tendency to sort of... never frown in front of other people if he was upset... unless he was at home, and even THEN it was rare). Thoughts of Dementors were stuck in his mind now, and he couldn't seem to shake them. They really were unpleasant things, and memories of Toby's first year were all flooding back now.
One memory in particular stuck, one of that girl... K-something... she had a K-name and she wasn't a student. She'd pointed out the silvery patronuses to him when Hadley was attacked, told him they fought off Dementors and everything, and hadn't he been so amazed, so desperate to learn how to do it? And now-...
He was seeing silver. It was hard not to. Toby had fully zoned out, forgetting he was even stood in a classroom, so when the ferret made up of positive magical energy appeared right there on his shoulder, it startled him so much he actually jolted.
"Wha-" Toby blinked. And blinked and blinked. It really was very bright. And just as the Dementors in his memories of first year had been driven away by the patronuses back then, so too were the memories driven off by this very real one. Not in the same sense, though, just because... it had distracted him. Which was good.
A ferret, a ferret patronus. Toby blinked at its nuzzling and raised a hand to pet its head to say hello, then looked around for the caster (though he knew of course who the creature belonged to). His eyes connected briefly with Soph's, then went back to the ferret, and he interacted with it just as he might have if it were real. 'Cause it WAS real, technically. Was he not looking at it, feeling it nuzzling his face? Very very real.
It made him wish he could cast his own one, sad that he wasn't going to, but not enough to encourage him to try. So he just stood and made clicking noises with his tongue, 'talking' to the ferret, trying to pet it, and idly wondering what kind of happy memory had produced this little protector.

All this memory searching was giving her a migraine. There were loads of memories coming to her but nothing appeared to be good enough. Sure her trip to Ireland was epic and the school trip with her friends this past summer was awesome but they didn't do either. What she needed was a moments break from this.
Deciding to practice the incantation was a good start and she already knew exactly how to say it. "Expecto Patronum...Expecto Patronum...Expecto Patronum," she repeated several times quietly. Once she had a good feel for the words she said them a few times more just for good measure. She wasn't taking chances with messing this up.
Removing her wand from it's holder on her wrist she gripped it firmly but at the same time gently in her hand. A circle. A simple circle. That's all she needed for the wand movement. Starting slowly she formed a small circle with her wand in front of her once, twice and then a third time. Really that was simple as well. One couldn't exactly mess up with a circle could they?
Incantation down. Check.
Wand movement down. Check.
Now the important part...the part that would really make this work or fail. A MEMORY! She still hadn't chosen one...

Okay, so now Marigold was all good and happy… but she was a bit distracted. She was humming a TDK song while making the beat on her leg with her wand, idly observing Toby and the patronus. It went to Zander first, mental note. Were Toby and Sophie no longer a thing? Sad. She like Toby a lot maybe even more than she liked Zander and plus, she had known him for like…almost 7 years. Which was a long time, so she felt like she had like…allegiance to'm or something.
Oh, right patronuses. Patroni? Patronodes? She didn't know the plural. "Expecto patronum?"
She shouldn't've expected anything. Although she was happy, she was muuuch too unfocused.
Again the reactions were as diverse as the students and their answers had been. Some stayed where they were, some moved off, some started muttering or moving their wands and some brought so many walls up Sabel wasn't sure if they were already in the labrynth.
Time to do a walk-about.

No chocolate? Yes chocolate? Could he just let her know where he was with chocolate? Even though nobody said anything regarding her question, she could tell they were on the same thought process as she was. Who didn't like chocolate? Oh, could a chocolate eating memory be considered happy? Because sweets really did put her in a happy place. For a few minutes AJ's eyes glazed over as she reminisced on her days spent at her mom's sweet shop. Man, she was in such a good mood. The only thing that could be better would be if she was able to produce this super hard patronus and eat chocolate as a reward.

Okay. Her happy memory was definitely going to involve Adi, but she needed to figure out which one it would be. Speaking of her boyfriend, she heard his voice. Leave it to a prefect to ruin all the fun. "I know the rules, but I'm pretty sure chocolate would help in this case." AJ was just looking out for her and her classmates. Ahem.

Sabel's eyes slid to Zeke, considering him with the highest raised eyebrow yet. Had the kid put them up to this? Surprise surprise that it was chocolate frogs of all things. He looked bemused enough to have been the mastermind behind it.
Shaking his head, Sabel returned his attention to the few students who had read his rules, and then back to AJ. "No food in the class. I would hope that you're not exerting yourself so much with this spell, that you're going to pass out." Self control, restraint, all that jazz. Some of them had it, right? [i]Right?![/b]
"Not only that, but it's a distraction to the current lesson. Instead of focussing on a truly happy thought, you'll be distracted by the happiness chocolate brings and that won't be enough for a patronus. If you're feeling faint, let me know and take a break. You can eat to your heart's content after class is over."

So when they were given the go ahead, Zeke stood and thought hard.
He wanted to cast a proper one, and for that he would have to dig deep, reach deep... cling to a memory that would give him strength. He had one, or two, or three, but he was sure they weren't all going to be good enough.
Did he want to opt for his first big family get away? First night in Prague? The day Emily picked him up and he was legally in her care? He remembered that day as if it were yesterday, and without even realising he was smiling to himself.
***
Twirling his wand in hand, Zeke considered his options, and avery early memory sprang to mind. He remembered receiving a knuckle sandwich, again, and again, and again. The taste of blood from his cut lip, the sucker punch to the gut, his shoulders aching from being held back. She'd intervened then, saved him... kept him safe... patched him up. It was cold out, but she was warm. It was him against the world, but he wasn't alone.
Deciding to let that memory be for now, he focused his attention on practicing the wand movement, letting his hand guide his wand in a circular fashion, small at first and then wider, but really that was the EASY part.
He surely couldn't get THAT part wrong.
Nevertheless, he practiced it a few more times. Just to be sure.
He was content with the movements now, and was about to recite the incantation a couple of times to get into the swing of things before ACTUALLY attempting the super duper difficult way above his level advanced charms work. But then he couldn't help but overhear a question.[/color]
The one thing he was sure he could count on, was Zeke's determination. The kid went right to it, not physically doing anything at the moment, but Sabel could tell the wheels were turning. And in the right direction. There was that look of deep thought and consideration, and that tell-tale smile of finding something absolutely wonderful. It made Sabel smile a little, and he gave the kid an encouraging nod as he walked by, not that he suspected he needed any encouragement.

She faced a wall and let her memories come and go. But the weird thing was, she didn't need to search for a memory. It was just... there. Rather than a memory of an event, it was the memory of her Grandpapi. Even though he had passed away, he was still there in some inexplainable way. He was everything to her, and even now he had gone he still was. When he was alive he was her protector, or so it seemed. So the mere memory of him made her feel euphoric, so incredibly happy, and she felt so safe. So, with that in her mind, she raised her wand and slowly performed the circular wand movement. She practiced it a few dozen times, just to make sure it felt okay.
***
She stood, her feet hip width apart, and held her wand out. She kept her eyes open, focusing on one spot on the wall. Well, an imaginary spot. "Expecto Patronum," she said, whilst doing the circular wand movement at the same time. She wasn't sure if anything had happened. In the corner of her eyes she could see small wisps of silver now and then from other people. Did hers produce the same thing? She didn't think so, but she didn't lose heart. Somehow, one day, she would succeed. And that day may actually be today. Or it wouldn't, but that was okay.
There were students moving off for privacy, sure, but Miss Burton's full back-to-the-classroom had him a bit concerned. Not because it wasn't a good way of getting privacy, but because it was a good way of hiding troubling emotions. And Merlin knew what types of emotions the very concept of patronuses could bring up.
So he walked over carefully and quietly, keeping a few feet away as he leaned forward and peeked around so he could see her face. There was great relief in seeing a smile, an emotionally invested smile and he pulled back. This one, had got it. And looked determined to get it. So he drew back quietly and left her to her devices, not wanting to intrude on her concentration.

That aspect was done but now Cilla had to think of a memory. She was starting to get nervous.
***
Cilla's mind ran through the major events in her life, focusing on any positive memories and then focusing on a really happy memory. Cilla decided to focus on when she was nine and she sang solo at her Muggle primary school's end of year concert. She had combated her nerves and this made her feel happy and proud. She closed her eyes and a mental image of her nine year old self appeared singing like a beautiful nightingale. Soon the memory was as clear as day. Cilla took a breath in and was ready to begin...
***
Cilla moved a bit so that she had a good amount of working space surrounding her. She aimed her wand at a spot a few inches in front of her and focused on her happy memory. She moved in wand in a circular motion and said firmly and clearly, "Expecto Patronum." Nothing happened.
She wasn't going to let it phase her considering Professor Dakest said for the students to not be worried if they didn't produced a patronus. She really concentrated hard and repeated the wand movement and incantation but a bit louder.
"Expecto Patronum!"
A trail of wispy smoke emitted from Cilla's wand and floated in front of her. "Not bad," Cilla thought to herself but she wanted to conjure a corporeal patronus.
Cilla really focused on her happy memory as she waved her wand in a circular motion and said, "Expecto Patronum!" Her cheeks were a bit flushed from concentrating and her brow was slightly glistening. That wasn't important, though. As soon as Cilla said the incantation, what appeared to be a very transparent cat materialised in front of her.
"Professor? How am I doing?" Cilla asked, her voiced a mixture of nervousness and excitement.
Interesting the way students thought and approached tasks. While some settled down for the memory, others wanted to get the wand movements and incantation right. Perhaps so as to not risk losing the memory once they found it?
Regardless, Sabel stopped and watched Ashcroft for a moment. The technical aspects of the spell were right and it looked like there was a memory as clear as day dancing behind her eyes. It must have been potent, by the whisp and then ghost-like form that appeared from her determination.
He had to admit, he was impressed. A proud smile bore on his lips as he nodded at the young girl. "Exceptionally well, Miss Ashcroft." He noted her exertion and shook his head in wonderment at the stubborn determination of children. "Why don't you take a brief rest from the casting and revel in your memory a bit more. It might make the casting a bit less taxing."

Or there was that time when Brook said his first word and she was convinced that he'd said her name. And she'd helped him take his first steps and she was really proud of that, but it wasn't the happiest memory she'd ever had.
But what was? This was gonna require some serious thinking.
***
"Professor??" she raised her hand so he would see her, cause she was still kinda tiny. "Does it have to be the same memory every time? Like does everyone only have one memory that will work or could it be different ones if they all make you really happy?" Because she had a lot... she was a very happy person, and pretty much liked everything, so it would be far more difficult to find a bad memory than a good one.
It was the twitchy brow that stopped Sabel this time. The look of extra concentration, flickering thoughts and nothing really sticking. He wasn't really surprised when she asked him a question, and he squatted down beside her, clasping his hands together between his knees as he rested his forearms on them.
While he spoke to her, his voice was for everyone in the class to hear. "Well, it is very helpful if it is just one happy memory. One really strong one that sticks with you and fills you up from your head to your toes each and every time. Otherwise, if and when the time comes, you're going to be scrambling from one memory to another and you're going to try to find your happiest." And his expression said it wouldn't work.
He shifted slightly and gave her a sideways grin. "But there is no rule against grouping memories into a single concept. For instance, if you have a brother or a sister you love very much as well as your parents and a pet, why not have the happy memory of 'home' or 'family'. Remember, it doesn't have to be a single, specific memory. It can be a generalization, if it is strong enough. A grounding thought. Something that makes you feel safe and warm. Like a blanket. Find a blanket memory."

Smiling at her thoughts, Lux decided that it wouldn't hurt to get in a little practice of the incantation before giving the spell another go. Even though she had already done it before, it would help her feel more confident. She repeated 'Expecto Patronum' a few times under her breath.
***
Finished with the incantation, Lux moved on to the wand movement. With her wand, she did the counter-clockwise circular motion a few times. Each time she remembered not to close the circle the whole way and bring the end in a little. All and all she was confident in this part of the spell. The only problem was the happy memory thing.
Ughhhh, couldn't she just combine all the happy memories together???? Yep, she was going to do that. Make the one super happy memory and maybe then she would be closer to casting a corporeal Patronus. So far all she had managed were small wisps of smoke, which were better than nothing but no amazing feat when compared to Dakest's otter.
***
Deep breaths in and out, she thought of all the happy memories, which were basically every time she saw him besides when he had been in a coma because that was sad. There was all the times they had hung out as friends, and their first kiss. Of course when he asked her to be his girlfriend... And just all the times they spent together. It was all just so HAPPY!!
Thoughts firmly pictured in her mind, Lux confidently cast the spell. "EXPECTO PATRONUM!"
After speaking with Miss Fields, Sabel started around the class again. Miss Carrington had that 'wheels-behind-the-eyes-turning' look going on, and he was tempted to tell her not to grind them to dust. It would do no good if students were forcing happy memories.
But it seemed he didn't have to say anything as that smile appeared, and her attempts produced the first whispers of a patronus charm. He smiled at her encouragingly. "Great work Miss Carrington. Keep it up. Keep focussed on that memory you have. Let it fill you."

Twirling his wand, he thought about his first recital and maybe tried casting the patronus charm too.

In his mind it was just him in black tuxedo, the stage, the glossy black grand piano and the audience giving the applause as he finished playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. It was five years ago and every time he remembered that, he just smiled happily. Now he should try casting the patronus. Deep breath, concentration, think about his first recital and....
"Expecto patronum!" The Korean guy said loudly as he waved his wand in a circular motion. Nothing happened. Maybe he needed more focus and concentration. Let's try again. "Expecto patronum!" But still nothing. It seemed like his memory wasn't that strong enough. Let's figure out another memory.
Mr. Hwang seemed in quite deep thought. Hardly present in the present if Sabel was to gander a guess. So, he tip-toed by the young boy so as not to disturb him from whatever memory he was reveling in. It looked to be a potent and powerful one. One that he could get lost in for sure.
His sneak-by was halted, however, when he caught the edge of disappointment and reluctance in the kid's last cast. Pausing, Sabel considered the boy. "Don't be discouraged if it doesn't come from your memory right away. It might be you need a more...fullfilling memory, one that you feel you could find protection in and from, or it could simply be that you can't force it. Remember, I await a guardian." One of the keys, was not trying to force such an emotional thing.

Of course she would have to share the magic thing with her sisters, but was that really so bad? Wait, did this mean this wasn't a super happy memory? Okay, she was having way too many questions about this. At this rate this would never work.
***
What else could she think about? Adi! Everything that involved him made her really happy. She could think about the time that he asked her out. Or any time that they hung out together. Oh, when he promised her that he would get her a unicorn farm. She could pile on this memory with Zander's agreement in assembling the troops in the forbidden forest to get her a unicorn NOW. Man, Hogwart boys sure were nice.
What else? It made her pretty happy inside when she tackled Ian, BUT thoughts of him made her skin crawl sooooo that would be defeating the purpose, yes? No Ian thoughts. Ummm... what else?
***
Now she needed to practice the incantation and the wand movement. She knew that the chances of her or anybody else getting it done right was slim to none, but that was not going to stop her from trying REALLY hard.
"Expecto Patronum." Not too bad, and it wasn't a tongue twister or something that was hard to get out. "Expecto Patronum...Expecto Patronum... Expecto Patronum." Next, she picked up her wand and traced circles with it. Wheeee. This was easy.
There were those students who seemed to settle down into a memory really well, and then there were those that seemed to turn their wheels on the spot. Sabel could practically see smoke coming out of Miss Valentine's ears.
He paused at her side, nodding at her wand movement and incantation as he offered gentle advice. "Remember, the memory should fill you head to toe. Something you can revel in, even in very dark, dark times." Potency. Like bad milk, except....good.
.....Moving on!

It was a force that would protect them. Right. And to bring it about, the boy needed to think up of a happy memory. ............. Er. What if he didn't have a happy enough memory? He looked down at his wand, a worried expression crossing his face. What WOULD he pick? The moment when he was finally leaving that freaking awful place known to most as Beauxbatons? Going to that rave with Toby? Or how about the moment when Ruby said yes to being his girlfriend?
Jeez, this was hard, wasn't it?
Despite his warning that this was not a competition, and perhaps they all shouldn't get too ahead of themselves, Sabel couldn't stop himself from grinning at Whitlock's initial reaction. Pure excitement and determination.
Except that as quickly as it had come, it faded and so did Sabel's smile. Here was the tricky part, the emotional part. The part that made the patronus advanced magic.
Walking over to the young man, Sabel clapped him on the shoulder. "What do you want to protect most in this world? Try thinking of what you would fight to stay alive for." Because that, was usually a sure line to a fulfilling happy memory. And even if it wouldn't be the one that worked, it might give the boy some ideas to start.

Generally speaking, failure wasn't all bad. If at first you don't succeed, try again, you know?....but....there were just....reasons.......
Swallowing thickly, Gabe set his quill down on the desk and focused on his breathing; attempting to get his mind right.
There was nothing to be panicking about. Nothing at all. The professor had said it wasn't that big of a deal...if you couldn't do it. And science doesn't care about defense, anyway. This isn't mandatory for what you want to do in life.
He could...just write out...some memories...and do that, instead. There wouldn't be any attempts. Not....from him today.
Clearing his throat, Gabe pulled a clean piece of parchment and set to writing. It wasn't as surprising that most of his 'happy memories' involved Ruby. Where was she? Would she come sit with him? He needed to hold her hand for a moment.
After his first question about Patronuses, there were a few students that had stood out to him. A few students who seemed to be locked in troubled worlds or states. There was little other reason to fear a patronus charm, and it was disheartening to see.
Especially when one looked near enough to having a panick attack in the middle of his class. Did he bring a paper bag? Sabel patted his pockets down and made a mental note to bring one. Perhaps he'd enlist Zeke to make up a lovely first-aid kit, begrudgingly complete with chocolate frogs.
Stopping near the boy, Sabel tucked his hands in his pockets and rocked back on his heels a little. It was hard not to glance at the paper, but it was the private nature of the lesson that kept his curiosity at bay. "Don't feel you have to force yourself to an accomplishment today, Mr. Banner. This lesson is purely for the benifit of each of you. I cannot tell you what you should get out of it." An encouraging smile went to the boy. "That, is up to you."
There was another thought tickling at the back of his mind, but he put it aside. "If you need help, just ask. Or swing by my office later, and we can chat."

Henric's happy memories? Of course, he had plenty while he was growing up, he never had once forgotten the day he was out from the orphanage and into the arms of his new parents, his love for food and animals, the day he got his first pet terrapin, Manchester United scoring 7 goals before half-time, and many more. But everytime he reminised about the happier times in his life, he felt like one day, it would all be gone and taken away from him. That was the reason he despised and feared the Dementors...those things exist for that sole purpose of sucking the happiness and hope inside of you, until you left with nothing.
"No....not this time...fight it. You can do this..you can...and...you must..."Henric thought determinedly inside his head. His held up his wand, ready to cast the spell.
***
He sighed, pausing for a while. Henric then turned to look at the others who were trying their best to conjure up their own patronus. Seemed like it was hard for them too...Henric noticed llia was looking at him, he smiled back and gave her a thumbs up to show her that she could do it.
Returning back to his own position,he readied himself again before letting out a determined shout,"Expecto Patronum!!"but failed to produce a mist pf any kind.
Nicolei looked a bit...distraught. From the get-go the kid had the look of despair all about him. That was a sure way to kill any attempts at getting a patronus done.
Sabel stood a few feet away for a moment, wishing for once he was a mind reader. Merlin these kids were silent in their struggles. Very few questions, all internalizations. And just how much drama was skittering about in their heads.
"Remember to breathe, Mr. Nicolei." Merlin the kid looked as tense as a 2x4. "It'll come. Guaranteed."

Sighing and rubbing his face, Ethan chose the corner of the classroom and sat on the floor. He then began to trace circles on the floor with his wand, and allowed his memories to bring him back to his younger years.
How was he able to surpass those dark days? What sort of memory can he bring forward mentally when faced by a dementor? What recollection does he have that made him believe in the good of the world? What...or who made him happy?
***
With that thought in mind, Ethan stopped dead in his tracks as he blinked at the floor several times. The chill he had been waiting for finally came.
Mordred.
Ethan did not realize that he momentarily stopped breathing as his thoughts carried him back to that one time in Russia where he stayed with his cousin shortly after his mother’s death, and his step father’s disappearance. The Mordaunts, he knew, were a cold bunch. He was technically orphaned that time, and he still could not believe that his cousin, whom he initially didn’t get along with, came to his side and took him in without question. Ethan was quick to question the move however, but Mordred only had one answer: Family.
The word echoed in his mind like a loud gong being hit. The memory was further amplified as he remembered being hugged affectionately by his older cousin as he cried his eyes out, dampening his shirt. The love of his deceased mother was felt through a person whom he considers as the brother he never had.
Smiling, and finally looking up, Ethan looked around as he rolled his right shoulder. As he did so, he encased the memory in his brain, and mentally placed a force field around it to secure and anchor it within his head, and heart. Should he face a dementor or leithifold, he was sure that he’ll get the chance to survive. He knows that his memory was strong enough to get him through.
***
What else was missing? Ah, yes. The confidence to deliver the patronus out. He had heard the professor say not to fear their patronus, and of course there was a simple logic behind that. He wasn’t afraid of, whether or not his patronus was a butterfly, but his enemy right now was his own self.
“Expecto Patronum.” Circle wand movement. “Expecto Patronum.” I await a protector. Ethan could not help but smile at the thought. The word protector instantly connected it with his happy memory. “Expecto Patronum.” All he needs to do now, is to believe his memory, “Expecto Patronum.” And to trust himself.
The patronus is a positive FORCE.
The Slytherin centered himself and pictured his memory forming into a huge ball of white light. All he needs to do now is to get that energy out from his center, down to his wand arm, and right through the tip of his wand. “Expecto...Patronum!”
Something. There was something. A thick puff of bluish-white smoke came out of his wand...but no form...yet.
Ethan exhaled, and grinned at his progress. He’s not expecting anything really. But literally seeing that blinding white light inside him come out of his wand was almost enough for the Slytherin.
Practice. Yes. More of that, please.
At first, he had been concerned that Mordaunt would sit and sulk and refuse to try to even think about the patronus. He just had such a serious look about him, that Sabel wondered what switch had been turned on, or off, in the boy's head.
But then, there was a transformation. A wonderful transformation. The light that sparked within the boy's eyes was unmistakable, and while no words or memories were spoken or exchanged, it was entirely relatable. The kid had found something strong that would protect him well.
Sabel gave Mordaunt a proud smile and nod at the wisps of smoke and the boy's own excitement. "Well done. Very well done."

Especially her friend Henric, he was her best friend and made her happy just being around her. Was that enough though? Was that strong enough? When she felt like her heart was breaking in diagon alley he just bumped into her life, quite literally. She wondered if he even knew how much he meant to her.
She turned her mind away from him for a moment and breathed deeply. She would use a trick her father taught her and clear her mind out. She breathed deeply with her eyes closed until she felt stillness within. Then, slowly, she allowed thoughts and memories to trickle back in.

Henric saved her from being alone that day and all school year. She realized that she wanted to keep that safe. She wanted to keep him safe. In that, she firmly decided that she would manage to start casting a strong patronus. That would be her new memory.
She raised her wand and began to do the motions, whispering the incantation to herself. Focus, just like you were taught. You can do this Freya. She told herself as she formed her memory and focused it.
There were some students that didn't need words or expressions of encouragement. For them, the privacy and silence of their thoughts were enough. And Miss Valke seemed to be one of those. He wasn't sure if she was meditating or breathing or drowning in memories, but he thought it best to leave her in her thoughts, especially as she started muttering the incantation.
Tip-toes again, he moved silently by her, pausing only for a brief second if she had a question or concern. But then it was moving on, softly so as not to break the concentration.

Sometimes the happiest things weren't even REAL things. She put a hand in the air and waved it around. "Professor, do happy imaginary things count?" Sometimes imaginary things were the bestest things but they weren't real memories.
***
This one, always so full of questions. It made Sabel smile, and he scrubbed a hand across the back of his neck in thought as he squatted down beside her. "I don't think they would work very well. It's hard to get the same feeling from something you've imagined, compared to something you've experienced. In fact, it's almost impossible."
So she was having trouble with a happy thought, was she? And the only good ones were imaginary ones? That made his brow crease in thought. Surely there was something the bubbly fourth year found to make her over-the-moon-happy.
"Remember, it should be a memory that fills you up. From toe to head. Makes you feel safe. If the night was the darkest, pitchiest black and you were alone, what would you think of to make yourself feel safe?"
He'd leave her with that nugget of thought and a look that said 'don't be dismayed'.

Definitely. That. Memory.

"Expecto Patronum, Expecto Patronum, Expecto Patronum.'' He liked saying that incantation for some reason. Maybe it was the way it rolled off of his tongue but whatever the reason, the Hufflepuff kept on saying the incantation for another minute or so. "Expecto Patronum, Expecto Patronum.'' You know what kept intruding his thoughts? Chocolate. Not that the source of his happy memory had mentioned it, his brain wanted his mouth to nom on the tasty treats. Hmph.
"This is no time for chocolate,'' he sternly chided himself. "Don't you want to see what form your Patronus will take?'' If it took any but yes, Adi WANTED to have this charm in the bag even though he knew it could take him years to do so. Or maybe he would never get it. Heh. But he wouldn't go there. Only positive thoughts for this Puff!
He moved on to practicing the wand movement without the incantation. A simple circle as Dakest had put it. Around and around and around went his wand. GOTCHA! Now it was time to actually combine the two!
*** ''Expecto Patronum!'' Cue the circular movement of the wand annnnd his focus on the memory of him and AJ sitting on that Bridge just over two years ago. Fixing his specs more comfortably on the bridge of his nose, he eyed the Hippogriff feathered core wand tip. Not so much of a wisp of... anything had made itself known. No worries! Adi did know that the spell was a VERY complicated one. He would simply try again.
Too excited to sit the way he was currently position, Adi rearranged himself so that he was sitting on his feet. "Expecto Patronum!'' Concentration on happy memory? Check! Wand movement? Check! Something emitting from his wand? Nope!
"Going to make something happen soon.'' He shook his wand as though it were defective and the shake would fix it. Hehe. ''Expecto Patronum!" HEYO! Was that a puff of something?!
Or had he imagined it? Noooo, don't let it be his imagination!
There were some students who started off small and worked their way up. And then there were others that hit the ground running. Sabel was just relieved that Rehman was not one to let a trip in his run land him flat on his face.
Determination and confidence was winning out, though just barely. Sabel made his way over and clapped the kid on the shoulder twice as he moved by. "Keep practicing. It'll come." Don't loose the running momentum.

Angel said again, so that was that down, she finally managed the incantation, even if it had taken her longer than she thought it would.

Angel now had to try and think of a happy thought, but which one was she going to think of, there was so many happy thought that she had and some were amazing, like the day she first met Benny, the time her and her sisters first went into Diagon Alley, the day she got her Hogwarts Letter, everything was good and now she had to figure out which one was going to be powerful enough.
"How powerful does the spell have to be?" Angel was totally lost about how powerful everything had to be and now she had to figure out a few things and decide on which thought she was going to use.
It was hard not to burst out in laughter as he caught the fourth years attempt at the incantation. He focussed on where he was walking, scrubbing his neck and anything else he could to keep his amusement to a wide grin. Kids, were endearing.
"Powerful enough that in the face of a Dementor, it won't diminish." A bit harsh? Maybe, but it was also the truth. "It should give you a feeling of safety, in the scariest of situations. Make you want to push through to the end."

Nothing. Not even the slightest something. Literally he had pulled out all of those emotions and geared up for absolutely nothing to happen. He felt like an idiot. It wasn't like he had said the incantation softly either. He'd practically shouted it.
Honestly, he hadn't really noticed Fullmer. The kid was sitting so quietly and out of the way, that Sabel almost walked right by him. It was the shout that brought his attention right around, and a big grin to his face.

He was completely determined to do this! Jay had beat him on every spell so far and he wanted something, anything to prove to him his wand was working. He was ready to write to mum and say it just wasn't working! 'Expecto Patronum' he muttered again and again and used the circular wand movement over and over practicing. Different memory...the one of his mum wasn't enough. How about down in the Alps with mum and dad...no that didn't seem enough.
What memory could he use? The day he was accepted to Hogwarts? No....getting into Hufflepuff??? He concentrated on that, his mind circling around the day, right before the feast began. He had been so scared he'd be in Slytherin! He centered his mind and said "Expecto Patronum" firmly. A poof of something appeared but didn't stay or form anything. THAT WAS SOMETHING! RIGHT???
***
A poof of silver had appeared and faded already. That was a start! He beamed, though still eyed his wand. He needed to have more confidence he was sure of that. He was always afraid he'd fail with the spell he was doing and that was likely the problem. 'Expecto Patronum Expecto Patronum Expecto Patronum Expecto Patronum Expecto Patronum' he muttered over and over. A new memory? No, that had worked! So his mind concentrated hard again on that memory of being told he was in Hufflepuff. His mum had been so proud that he was in her house! "Expecto Patronum!" he said as he did the wand movement.
Again a poof of silver appeared but no more.
It was another case of that flickering recognition of finding a memory, the question of why it didn't work and the turning of the wheels to try and fix it. This time, it seemed to work.
"Good job, Mr. Yenorin. Remember it may take some time to flesh out the patronus. Don't get discouraged by small steps. You're doing great." Two poofs of patronus smoke? Right on!

Morgana, professor. MORGANA.
But UGH, that meant she would have to stay and try. At least... that was a terrible spell in general and Agatha hoped knew that probably no one would be able to cast a proper Patronus that day anyway. Good. GOOD.
The sixth year went to a less crowded area and still didn't sit down. She did get her wand out, though, but didn't think of anything just yet. Ugh. UGH.
Hit a nerve, did he? Well, at least she was staying.
He shrugged, unconcerned by her flustered reaction. She'd have to be a bit more sneaky than that, if she wanted to try and escape his lessons. "Wasn't implying a thing." Just observing.
Like now. Watching the girl sit and sulk. Merlin it wasn't much better than when she had first heard that they were doing patronuses. He scrubbed the back of his neck for a moment, debating saying anything to her. Finally, he decided to leave her to her thoughts, but not without a bit of incentive.
With a flick of his wand, the otter patronus was back. It ambled over to the young girl and sat down in front of her, staring at her with big, bright eyes. Hopeful eyes. She would give it a playmate yes?

Eden realized how sad a lot things made her...and...she bit her lip to keep from feeling emotional in the middle of class. She didn't like this. She didn't like this at all.
The range of emotions in the class were astonishing. But this was the first student near tears that he had seen.
With a sigh, Sabel started over, his otter patronus bounding along at his side. He stopped beside the young girl, crouching so he was at the same level as her. There was no sense in drawing attention to her, so he kept his voice confidential and the otter patronus ambled about in front of them.
"Not the easiest thing in the world, is it?" He spared a sidelong glance at her. "Don't push yourself too hard. If this becomes a negative experience, you'll likely never want to cast a patronus." The look he gave her said that one day, when she was ready, she would be able to do so.
He gave her shoulder a brief pat as he rose. "One thing at a time, Miss McGee. One thing at a time."

She laughed hard and often, especially around friends, but those piecemeal memories couldn't add up to the memory that she needed.
By this point, Tora had completely discarded her first memory. It obviously wasn't going to work anymore, but now she was stuck. Could she use a feeling instead of a memory? She couldn't remember if the Professor had mentioned anything about that and was too embarrassed to say so. Ugh, she was a mess.
It was fairly obvious from the deep creases in her brow that Miss Gallaway was thinking very, very hard. And it didn't look like they were entirely pleasant thoughts either. She was burning wood quickly, and that would either lead to frustration or a breakthrough. Hard to tell which it would be.
"Remember, self-confidence is important. In memory and in casting." Just, some food for thought.

His first day at Hogwarts?
A scene from a quidditch match?
Flying in general when everything was so free?
Another thinker, but this one didn't seem to be killing brain cells in the process. It made Sabel breathe a little easier.
He watched Atreyu for a moment, wary that the boy might suddenly pull a confused or troubled face, but he seemed to be a peaceful thinker. At least for the moment. So Sabel let him explore his thoughts undisturbed.

He was supposed to be angry at them right? For abandoning him? But he didn’t , his new family had explained the situation they had been in and he had come to the conclusion that they had put him for adoption was for him to get a good life. And when he had heard that he had felt proud. Proud to be both their sons. So yes, this locket was special to him and it was filled with positivity.
He opened his eyes again and grabbed his wand, ready to try the spell.
This was the first time that Sabel noticed a thought process being attached to an item. He didn't miss the check of the locket, and for a brief moment thought about warning against placing the basis of the patronus on a material item. But he held his tongue on account of the expression on the boy's face.
It wasn't the locket. It was the memory it contained. No need to get all Auror-y on the kid, not when he was just starting out. There was nothing like being a discouraging nag right from the get-go. So he continued on, glad at least, that the boy had found a memory.

Ohhhhh yes. Yes. She had a new memory to try out today, didn't she?
Unable to keep her thoughts and her gaze separate from each other, Sophie's attention flickered first to Tobes, then to Zander - not focusing on them in the present, but recalling the memory she so held dear to her heart. And with a small smile on her face, she let that pure elation from the summer's memory fill her up, focusing on it with every fiber of her being.
***
Powered by the powerful emotion filling her soul, Sophie rose to her feet, lifted her wand and waved it in a circular motion just as she'd done many times before, then cast confidently with a massive smile on her face, "EXPECTO PATRONUM!"
A silver ferret shot from the tip of her wand, just as it had in the dueling arena last term, and the smile that spread all the way up to her eyes never left Sophie's features as the ferret bounced with great speed and agility around the room, twisting between Zander's ankles and popping up to brush against his face in an affectionate manner before bouncing over and perching itself over on Tobes' shoulder and giving him eager patronus!nuzzles against his cheek.
Oops?
Admittedly, Sabel was a little bit worried that Brown might not be inclined to try out the patronus charm today, on account of being sensitive to her classmates. She was a good kid, with a thoughtful head on her shoulders, but he didn't want her to restrict herself on account of others.
Especially when seeing their classmate perform the charm might actually provide them with encouragement. He was about to say something along those lines, when he caught the look on her face. And it brought a smile to his own.
She had a memory and she looked fully prepared to use it. Good. Just, good.
More than good. Excellent!
Sabel couldn't help but stop and grin at the beautiful ferret patronus that came forth. It was brilliant, it was. And hopefully a perfect example of what could be achieved. He cast a grin at Brown. No words were needed. A very good job indeed.

While she was waiting for the minutes to pass by, Natalia began to hum out of mere boredom. Didn't someone mention that happy memories were essential to conjuring patronuses? But how would that play out in the actual charm? Did they have to think happy memories while performing the patronus?
Miss I'm-too-awesome-to-ask-for-help had to figure out of these by herself.
It took Sabel a moment to figure out where the new noise was coming from. It wasn't breathing, talking, muttering or cursing. It was....humming? Who, what and why?
Not that he minded humming, it was just curious. Perhaps humming helped with happy memories? Perhaps it was a method to an end. He'd never considered it on account of being a terrible musician.
Pausing by Miss Woolf, Sabel glanced at her. He had to ask out of curiosity. "Is it helping, the humming?"

Okay, happy thoughts then. Easy. Toby could easily list a billion. He stood too, one hand in his pocket, one hand twirling his wand again, and stared at it spinning round and round and faster and faster through his fingers while he sorted through his brain for all the happy things.
But he couldn't help but think about what Dakest had said. About not ever fearing the patronus, which... he sort of felt like he did, in a way. And... of finding a memory that couldn't be shaken by negativity or fear. Fear fear fear. Always that word. What if his memories were unusable, because of things beyond his control that DID make everything negative, even when he didn't want them to?
Thinking about that made Toby suddenly think of Dementors, which made a shudder run through him. If someone honestly told him he'd never see one of those again, that would be enough of a happy memory to cast a million corporeal patronuses.
***
It made him wish he could cast his own one, sad that he wasn't going to, but not enough to encourage him to try. So he just stood and made clicking noises with his tongue, 'talking' to the ferret, trying to pet it, and idly wondering what kind of happy memory had produced this little protector.
Admittedly, Sabel had been worried about how Fuller-Thompson was going to take the task of casting a patronus. The kid seemed skittish enough already at simply the question of a patronus.
Thankfully, and with great relief, it seemed that once the task was assigned there was some relaxation that occurred. He wasn't sure why, or what had changed, he was just glad that it did. Except that it changed back to that same, worried, haunted look.
Moving over to the kid, Sabel clapped him on the shoulder opposite of the adorable ferret patronus. "Take it easy." On yourself, on your memories, on your patronus. Merlin he didn't need an anxiety attack happening in the middle of his class. "Do what you can, and we can talk later if you like."
Or if he didn't. Totally up to the kid. Just...relax. Please. And thank you Brown, for looking out for your classmates.

Gosh. So many things!

Another thinker, but it looked like a happy and hopeful thinker. A relief. He wouldn't have to worry about this one breaking down. At least, he hoped he wouldn't.
By the way she was smiling, it seemed that all she needed was to try the spell and see what would happen.

Something that cannot corrode or diminish over time. Something that cannot be shaken by fear, by negativity. Think of it, you're happy thought, as what you go to normally when you are afraid. What gives you comfort when you are terrified and there is no one that can help you. Something that made lasting happiness.
... But what?

The only memory that seemed to beat out the rest was the one of his birthday. His birthday, the room of requirement, endless smiling, and some really good pizza. That was the best memory of all. Still made him feel warm on the inside just thinking about it. Maybe that could be the one to do it? It sure gave him some confidence, though being around her always did.
This one was another worried one. One that didn't look confident. That looked more confused than anything. It wasn't a small question: what makes you happy. More than that 'what makes you really happy'. Not an easy one at all.
It was nice to see the change though, the interest in trying out a memory, in taking a chance. It was nice to see the alteration in expression from worry and fear, to comfort and happy remembrance. Adair had that going for him, so he was headed in the right direction, and he got a reassuring nod.

Some of the students just seemed to be balls of happiness. And he wouldn't complain one bit. The only question came, as to if they could hold onto such happiness when the time came.
He hoped, that it never had to come. That they could all just use their patronuses for fun. For sending messages and having a brilliantly white companion.
The enthusiasm of Miss Guidry got an encouraging smile. Keep going little Ravenclaw. Keep going.

At least some of those that had walked in moody, were finding some relief in the patronus charm. Whether it was their own memories or the prospect of creating such things, it was nice to see the turn-around. Perhaps they could share their secrets with some of the still less-than-happy students?

Happy memory. She’d come up with something eventually.
Andrews looked stuck. Like, really and uncomfortably stuck. But Sabel couldn't put his finger on what it was that had her so stuck. Again, everyone was proving rather silent with the difficulties they were having. Deep thoughts, they abounded.
Not that he minded. Not particularly. Except when it put expressions like this on people's faces.

***
This one was interesting. In the endearing sort of way. Personable and determined and....had a very interesting way of storing her wand. That got a curious eyebrow raise from Sabel, but he said nothing of it. As long as she didn't do anything to hurt....
Like that. Sabel nearly facepalmed as the wand nearly took her and him to the healer's ward. Now wouldn't that put a damper on the patronus lesson.
But it didn't slow the girl down, so he didn't ask if she was okay. That was a question reserved for the fourth or fifth try of casting the patronus. He didn't think she needed his assurance, but he felt the need to give it to her anyways. "You're doing good. Looks like you've got a good memory too. Hold tight and try again."

Think Hady you can do this.

You know what they all needed? A romp outside in the sun. Something to make them giddy and happy and remember that the world wasn't all about classrooms and excelling in test scores and subject matter.
He pondered this as he watched the young snake. She looked on the brink of producing steam from her ears, but for the moment he would just leave her. Let her think. Be nearby if she had a question.
Sabel moved back to the front of the class, noting the expressions and general state of the room. "You're all doing fantastic. Remember, I don't care what you can or can't cast today. This excercise is for you and your benifit alone. Do not let grades or tests be a concern. I don't care about them right now." So, by extension they shouldn't either.
"If you have questions, just ask." He'd do another wander around the class and then decide whether to move them forward or not.

Puck had stayed quiet most of the class. Her eyes almost wide in shock, she wanted to succeed at casting her Patronus. She wanted to know what it was. But there were problems, her own problems that would mess with her even casting a simple one, she was sure of it.
She was only sixteen; it wasn’t like she was going to be able to cast a full. Probably not ever. She wanted to know one thing though – when was it that they were going to work with boggarts. Because she wanted to work on hers, to know it, to harness it. To use her own fears for her own advantage.
There were many memories that she could try to think of but where they strong enough? Were they genuine? Had her own childhood ruined the chance for her to cast a patronus? She wasn’t sure, but she was going to try. She smiled a bit as she thought about when she met Kace, and meeting Bianca...and how Bianca's family had accepted her.

So now that Janelle had her memory, she had to practice the spell. She started with the incantation. "Ex-pec-to Pa-tro-num, Ex-pec-to Pa-tro-num." She knew the words, but she wanted to make sure that she was saying every syllable correctly. "Expecto Patronum" Janelle wanted to be able to put all of her focus on her memory. She wanted the incantation to be second nature.
As for the wand movement, Janelle practiced making circular movements with her wand over and over. That part was easy. The hard part was going to be putting everything together and keeping her concentration while doing it. Piece of cake. Yeah, right.
Closing her eyes, Janelle tried to get in the concentration zone. So younger kids had a harder time with this spell because they had the attention span of a gnat. Well that and a bunch of other reasons. But Janelle was not your average little kid. She could focus.......when the situation called for it. And this spell was something she really, really wanted to do. Desire had to count for something, right? Eyes closed, she took herself back to the best time of her young life......so far. If there was one thing that Janelle was good at, it was daydreaming. She was right there, on the beach with her family.......together.
Janelle tried hard to keep herself focused while at the same time moving her wand in a circle. "Expecto Patronum", she said with authority. Aaaaand nothing. Well, she hadn't really expected to hit the ball out of the park on the first try. She'd try again and again.......as many times as it took.

Sophie was aware of people watching her and her patronus, but she didn't let them distract her from her thoughts - both Zander's and Tobes' reactions to the ferret's presence had made her smile, and she closed the distance between herself and the Hufflepuff, the sheer joy on her face not faltering.
"Sorry. She's got a mind of her own." She very clearly wasn't sorry - she was smiling away and watching him interact with her patronus fondly. He'd be cute with a pet ferret, wouldn't he? Soph could tell he was sad, though, even with her ferret giving him lots of affectionate nuzzles, but... how was she supposed to make this lesson any better for him? Or any easier?
She wasn't sure that she could, and she hated that.
"Don't tell the others," she said quietly with a smile, "but you're my happy thought." The ferret climbed up onto Tobes' head and sniffed inside his ear before burrowing into his hair, making himself at home, and curling up in a ball to rest. Which was... ahem. Not desirable. "Sorry," she said again, this time more genuine. "Should I make her go?" She was worried it was bothering him, but... maybe he'd welcome the distraction? So it was important to ask for that reason. More than that, the question was, Do you want us to stay, or should we leave you to it?
Dakest's sudden presence and encouragement to Tobes made her smile, and she gave the man a nod of encouragement of his own, letting HIM know that she thought HE was doing a good job with this whole consoling and teaching thing.

Thinking was going on. Only her thinking probably looked more likew meditating. What, it helped her think and remember sometimes. And she hadn't moved from her spot either. Nope, just crossed her legs, closed her eyes and started breathing deeply.
Only problem was, once she found a memory, it was quickly dismissed as not being good enough. But Heather did overhear Professor Dakest telling someone they could use the rather general 'home' or 'family'. Which was what she was going to do. Now, thinking.

A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.
Natalia was actually having quite a good time humming, when the professor turned up.
The fourth year quickly nodded, smiling sheepishly as she shifted her feet anxiously. Did he want her to start attempting the charm now?
I'm going to start now. Natalia thought to herself, hoping that the professor would turn away from her and not watch her fail. Hehehe... this is going to my first attempt...
After a couple seconds of hesitation, the Lioness lifted her wand and exclaimed: "Expecto Patronum!" As expected, she was met by empty space. It was no no deal. Natalia understood that it was challenging magic; it was anticipated that most people would not be able to conjure it at first try.
Perhaps, a powerful charm required a powerful voice?
"EXPECTO PATRONUUUUM!"
Thaaaaat... was probably a little too loud, too loud that it would certainly scare the little corporeal animal away. Was there another way that she could approach this? The wand movement? The pronunciation of the incantation? THE CLOTHES THAT SHE WAS WEARING, PERHAPS?
"Expecto Pah-tro-NUM."
"Expect-OH Patrol-nuuum."
"Ex-pec-toe Pae-tro-nium."
"Expect-me at three tomorrow afternoon at the coffee shop."
Kace heard Professor Dakest comment on his pronunciation. He said it sounds good which made him feel even more confident. He breathed a sigh of relief and now was more focused. He knew the incantation by heart and the wand movement, now it was time to zone in on his memory. He needed to think of a happy memory. A powerful happy memory like he did before. He thought about it and how it brought a smile to his face. With that aside time to get down to business!
He focused on it really hard and then said the spell, "EXPECTO PATRONUM!" and then used the circular wand movement and he looked at his wand and saw nothing. Eh he didn't expect it to happen the first time. It was a 50/50 shot the first time around. He thought he might try again. "EXPECTO PATRONUM!" and then did the circular wand movement and saw nothing again. Hmmm maybe he needed a stronger memory? That could be it.

Dot almost jumped right out of her shoes when the professor's voice came from right over her shoulder. She didn't poke herself OR him in the eye, at least, when she swung her wand hand wildly. So. That was so graceful. Good job, Dottie.
"I'm not telling you, so don't you dare ask me," Dot gave the professor a cheeky smile and flourished her wand correctly this time. Just watch this, Professor Man. She screwed up her face tightly, not thinking too hard about the incantation or the wand movement. She'd practiced those, although not a LOT, but enough that she could think about her happy memory. Not just think about it, but sink into how it made her feel, what that happy was like. It was more than happy. It was belonging and home and love.
Hmm. "Expecto Patronum." And there it was, the tell-tale streak of silver. "I DID IT, PROFESSOR MAN." She was queen of Charms, basically.

Trial one had been a bust, but Janelle was hoping for a little progress on trial number two. What had she done wrong the first time? Janelle wasn't sure, but she knew that she would have to do everything twice as hard the second time. Twice as focused, twice as happy. That would be a tall order, but Janelle was determined to do it.
She closed her eyes again and took herself back to the beach. She was there with Mom, Dad, Jasmine and Jason. Janelle was concentrating so hard, she could almost smell the salt water. Good times. Happpy times. She had to keep herself there and cast the spell at the same time. Holding her wand, Janelle made a circle and held onto her memory. "Expecto Patronum", she said even more powerfully this time.
Opening her eyes, Janelle did not see a patronus, but she did see a puff of something........smoke?, vapor?.......coming from the tip of her wand. It was gone so fast that for a second she thought she had imagined it. But it was there and that was something. It was a start. Janelle was on her way. She would get this patronus if it was the last thing she did.

It was a good job the ferret had sort of woken him up out of his earlier reverie, otherwise the clap on the shoulder from Dakest would have made him jump about a foot in the air. But no, it was fine, even though Toby hadn't heard him coming over he simply looked around to see who was there, one hand still petting Soph's patronus.
Take it easy. Words... he had been told a bazillion times before, though in a very different context, and words that were easier said than done.
He was quiet for a moment, eyes searching Dakest's face. Talk later? Toby had his misgivings, but... it was worth a shot. He liked visiting professors anyway, and while he was there he could insist properly about how there were no real Dark wizards. And maybe talk patronuses. Maybe.
"Okay, sir," he finally said, with a nod. "... Thank you."
Dakest just... seemed real nice? Patient. Toby liked that.
SPOILER!!: Soph

Back to the patronus then, except now Soph was here too. He started to nod at what she was saying, and opened his mouth to speak, but then abruptly stopped nodding when it... perched up on his head. Um. Ferret. Pls.
"I like her," he said, and quite genuinely too. But it was making him think of how nice it would be to have a companion like that, who'd always be there as long as you could conjure one. Like a permanent pet. That's what it was like. It was like everyone was getting a pet, but Toby wasn't allowed one. Which wasn't even true, it was more like he wasn't allowing himself to even ask for one, but that wasn't how it worked in his own, irrational mind. "... But yes. I'll say hi to her later. I just... I think I'm gonna go..." he waved his hand vaguely off in a random direction, the rest of his sentence unfinished. Gonna go do what? Practice alone? No. Maybe just... go. "You could go help Zander out, though. I bet he'd appreciate that."
If that came across as mean or bitter, that wasn't Toby's intention at all. It was a genuine suggestion; he'd seen Zander's expression earlier, when he'd looked up to see who cast the ferret, and was willing to be anything he was having trouble with the lesson as well, so... y'know. Toby was only really focusing on patronus feels, after all.
He waited until she'd called the patronus off, which actually made him feel sadder, like when the otter had given him a wide berth earlier. Toby loved animals, even in this form, and it broke his heart to turn his back on them, or see them do the same to him. But still he smiled at Soph, and get the patronus a goodbye 'pet', then turned and wandered off.
... off to the very edge of the room, where he promptly sat back down and watched everyone else at work. He was technically still ~thinking~, though he'd already decided on two memories that would have worked. One, easy, the day he was officially adopted, though sometimes that memory was still tinged with fear of things. He'd not even have considered that if Dakest hadn't mentioned the whole 'don't let it get shaken up by fear', 'cause that only happened when things got really bad. But now he was thinking about it anyway. And then there was Curtis, his little brother. Not even a particular memory, just Curtis. Thinking of him. But... oh Merlin, he missed him, he wanted to be home and with him, and that made him so sad. And now every happy memory he had was turning sad, and he was trying to take it easy but it was hurting his head and making his eyes sting and none of it felt very fun at all.
Toby put his wand away, now back to playing with that darn thread on his sleeve while he waited out the rest of the activity.

So, Eden had made a list of happy memories, and she scratched out the ones with Phoenix, because she missed him entirely too much to feel happy about these memories. Sigh. She really did miss him...that left...some family memories, Cole things, and Iwin and Emmalee.
Her cousin and his girlfriend..she just..ugh. The past weekend being able to talk to them? Maybe she could think of that...that would be nice. It was happy and something that Eden knew was affecting her current happy mood. So there. She would try this memory first! If not, she thought the second one on her list would be the bakery opening...her mam's bakery...last summer, was it? That was a very happy day for her, too...
So.
Expecto Patronum.
She closed her eyes, thinking of the past weekend, the news she had received...everything. Eden did the wand motion, and said, very softly..."Expecto...patronum...." and, as Eden expected...nothing. She didn't know if what she had done had counted as a try, though...but she sighed and sat back down in her desk, rubbing her face. This was pointless...she couldn't DO this...she just wasn't meant to have a patronus...

Sophie BEAMED at Tobes' declaration of liking her ferret and she was relieved that he wasn't totally annoyed with the patronus taking such a strong liking to him. It... only really made sense, didn't it? Good thing Tobes was such an animal person, really, and...
...
Oh. He DID want her to go. "Okay," she gave him a sad smile, and directed her ferret to go bounce to the other side of the room... until his last sentence.
The patronus disappeared instantly.
Sophie turned her gaze from where the patronus had been back to Tobes, the color drained from her face and her jaw set. Despite how innocent his intentions may have been, Soph only heard it as a hurt, bitter statement, an implication that she should go tend to Zander because... Zander had been the one to come between them, and maybe Tobes thought Soph liked Zander more. Maybe he resented Zander. Maybe he didn't want Soph around and was trying to push her away. Maybe he wasn't as okay with their break as he'd tried to make her think, and he'd just slipped up to his true feelings. Maybe she'd hurt him and he hated her for it.
And all the pure elation that had been filling her up was sucked right out of her.
She was just going to... go... over there... "Professor?" She neared closer to Dakest, her jaw still set firmly, and she tried to look calm and composed. "I've gotta use the loo. Really quick. Three minutes, I'll be right back. Emergency. Can't hold it. Girl things. You know. I'll be back in a flash, scout's honor. Y'know I wouldn't miss this kinda lesson for the world."
And she darted from the room without another thought. Needed to clear her head without all eyes on her, which wasn't something she was going to be able to do IN the room, as everyone had been watching her and her patronus. Just... needed... a moment, okay?
