| | Charms 2 Another cold day in the castle has come and you'll find that the Charms classroom is no exception. You can see your breath and you're probably shivering, but today's lesson will certainly (hopefully) help against that. Despite the frost and snow on the windows and the icicles hanging from various places, your professor is still in a somewhat good mood.
Professor Fuller is standing, leaning against his desk at the front of the classroom, bundled up in a coat and gloves, waiting for you all to arrive. So come on in and take a seat, so we can begin! Class has now started! If you are just arriving, just pretend your character has been here all along. Feel free to discuss! Class Progression:
1. Welcome to class. What have you been doing to keep warm?
2. Other ideas to keep warm?
3. Introducing the Insulation Charm. Practice!
4. Practical portion instructions.
5. Homework Assignment. |

With any luck, they could all leave class today and cast whatever charm they were about to learn. Merlin only knew they should have had this lesson weeks ago. Sophie turned toward a younger Ravenclaw when the girl said something about insulation. "I agree with her," she said, raising her hand. "Is there an insulation charm?"
But then--what about the snow INSIDE the castle? "Would that stop the snow inside the castle, though? How is that even possible? There's got to be some weird sort of magic making that happen," she added. Because as far as she knew, there were no holes in the ceiling to make it snow in the Great Hall.

Fuller asked a question and young Coop was one of the first to answer. Or well, propose a question. Huh. His blue eyes widened as he mulled over the question. Yes, it was a good question. He nodded in agreement with Coop, Cutty, Sophie, and many others. Cutty's answer was rather intriguing. Now other ways that they could stay warm. Transfiguration could help them? Potions could help them? He mulled over these thoughts and nodded when Sophie added her point about how the insulation spell could stop the snow inside the castle. "Professor, I'm not sure if this possible but could we use an atmospheric charm to try to stop the snow from falling in the castle?" he asked, not knowing if this would actually work. Oh well. Just a guess then.

Another question posed by the Professor made Adi put on his thinking cap again. Figuratively, of course. Some of the answers provided by the students were very much interesting. He himself had nothing really interesting to add.
He thrust his hand up and said, "A charm that would just keep the cold from touching any part of the castle or grounds.'' Like the charms and such that protected Hogwarts from intruders, though he hadn't the foggiest idea of what the type of charm he suggested might be.

Now talk about being clever, first years. Hugging was actually a good way of keeping warm. Just not in the magical quality Kyroh was talking about. Dima probably would have said the same thing considering both of them were hugging machines. Anyway, Fun Facts are something Ravenclaws appreciate since they can be about anything and Hugging would fall under that. "We could just ask Bellaire permission to use the Irie Room."
Though the whole school would not be able to fit. Prefects would certainly get the privilege of using it. Wouldn't they? Still, Nigel will never forget that room because of past incidents. Though the Room was a tropical vacation and Nigel did hate the winter. So......
Besides the Room of Requirements, it was Nigel's favorite room in Hogwarts.

A magical way to keep the entire castle warm? Hayden considered that. It seemed like a pretty hard thing to do; the castle was really big. What kind of a spell was so extensive? Hayden didn't even know any spells to keep warm, let alone such a big one. So Hayden just thought for a moment, and she wasn't even going to give an answer. But then she had an idea, so she raised her hand. "You could cast a giant bubble-head charm, but around all of Hogwarts instead of a head." She didn't even know if that was possible, but it was just an idea. "And then you could cast several of the hot air charms, and the warm air wouldn't be able to escape." |

WHAT?! A HUG?! As in everybody gathers around and cuddles everyone else? What was this, the Hufflepuff common room?
It took a moment of blinking and mouth gaping before Grayson shook his head and slumped back in his seat. He was going to concentrate on the question at hand and not the notion of a full-school cuddling session. Though, even he had to admit that a hug or a cuddle didn't sound bad right about now. Lucky buggers who were in relationships.
Right. Question.
The hand went up in the air. "Is there a stronger version of the Hot Air Charm? One that can cover a greater area? Liiiiiike the way the Caterwauling Charm is soooooort of a version of the Intruder Charm but is used for more than a single household?" Yes? Did this thing exist? And if so, was it broken or faulty? Because the snow and cold indoors wasn't exactly a GOOD sign. It wasn't welcome, either.
Also. The Atmospheric Charm idea was a good one. Uh huh.

Kace really had no idea about what charm they could use for the whole castle. He heard everyone's answers and he grinned and chuckled at the little ravenclaw's Kyroh's answer. Yes they could use a hugging room. That may work. I mean body heat could make them warmer. It seemed logical to him. Kace was trying to think and could not think of anything. He was stumped on this one. But he heard Grayson's answer and agreed with him. He also had a good question.

A hugging room.......yup. Didn't get any worse than that and for a few moments Lex just stared at Kyroh. Hugs were lovely but not just from ANYONE and she could bet that even when you agreed on the condition only certain people could hug you there would be that one kid that doesn't take hints well...always that one kid.
Dima was sometimes that kid. "I'm with Nigel. There's obviously enough room for us all if we've had lessons in there and the weather is heaven. I'm talking warm beaches. Can we make this happen? Can you have a joint class with her next time?" That'd help, you know? They still had a couple months left in the term. Still loads of lessons to be had and she would rather be warm through them...just saying.
She didn't reckon they could stay the whole time in the Irie Room but it would certainly improve the situation some.

It seemed like a lot of work to warm a whole castle, even with magic, Mo mused as he rubbed his hands together and listened to his classmates share their ideas. Unless it was localized magic. Sort of like...
His hand shot up. As much as West's idea made perfect sense, he just had to Ravenclaw-logic it a bit. "Wouldn't it be easier to keep ourselves warm, rather than the space around us? So maybe something that insulates the air immediately around us."

Everything was being jotted down. Yes. Anything and everything that involved some sort of way to produce or create heat, Beverly was interested in. She was sick and tired of this. What made it worse was that they couldn't communicate with the outside world or she'd sent a very angry letter to her dad, her brother, her grandmother and the Minister of Magic. Surely they'd do something to fix this.
Setting her quill down and flexing her wrist, she glanced up from her parchment and thought about the next question.
Hmm...Hmmmm....
She raised her hand. "How abouuut...charming things to radiate heat continuously?" Like a personal heater of sorts. "Like, charming my shoes to stay warm until I cast Finite on them." That would be nice. Nice and cozy for her toes.

| doesn't proofread tweets | #wrongaboutcereal | #siriusly? | emo to the extremo Zander looked over at the little Ravenclaw that sat next to him. Man, he really liked hugs. And though the idea was kinda nice, he doubted that it go over very well with Fuller. So instead he just looked over at Kyroh and gave him a small smile, making sure to stifle his chuckles.
Anyways right the question. Ummmm. Would there even be a way to warm up a whole castle? 'Suppose a huge fire would do the trick, but that'd involve burning the whole place down so that was a no. Hm. Could magic even fix this at this point? "Magical space heaters?" Did those exists? "We could strategically place them ALL around the school! And they'd be like normal space heaters but more magicky so they'd be amplified and stuff!" ... At least he tried.
Also could they do something about the snowing in the Great Hall? He was tired of eating extra-soggy-snowed-on muffins every morning.

Oooooh. OooOOOoooOOOOOhHHHH.
Toby raised his hand, eyes sparkling with his idea and lost in a daydream of a WARM and TOASTY castle. "A charm to put on the floors so they're a little more heated." Tobias was pretty sure he hadn't been able to feel any sensation in his toes for days. DAYS. "Y'know, like how cars have heated seats, and some really fancy houses have underfloor heating. Then the heat from that would rise and fill the room too." And also... warm feet. Not being in that horrible situation where you wake up in the morning still half asleep and accidentally step on a freezing cold floor. WARMTH IN GENERAL.
In fact, could they learn how to do that? Even if it wasn't what was in the lesson scehdule, Toby wanted to learnt that. Could they? Pleeeeease?

Jasmine took notes as her classmates and the Professor spoke. Then she listened to the Professor's next question and thought about it. What could they do to make the castle warm? She raised her hand to take a shot at an answer. I'm not sure how we could retain the castle's heat, but we could use a daydream charm to make it appear to be warm." It wouldn't really be warm, but at least they could pretend for a little while.

It seemed that her answer hadn't quite satisfied Mr. Magic Man, if his lack of response and emphasis on the word magical in the next question was anything to go by. Well, that was just too bad for him, as her idea worked and conserved precious energy that was needed to get where she needed to go. "I agree with the insulation idea. If there was some kind of insulation charm," since he was all hung up on the importance of magic "that would be the one to use, in theory. But what if Hogwarts is too far gone for any type of magic to help us now?" Sorry kiddos, but that was the theory she was working with. And if she was right, hopefully the staff would come to their senses before they all froze to death.

Ethan nodded at the older Snake dude who said about Weather-modifying Charms and whatnot. The younger Slytherin's hand went up in the air. "How about a Reversing Charm? Like...er...reversing the cold to heat? We could make use of the cold air, make it warm, and defrost ourselves in the process." It looks like a practical charm to be honest, if ever there was one.

Insulation? He liked Maddie's answer a lot, but the mechanics of it still confused the first year- clearly dimmer than most, he was. "If we were gonna use the in.... in-suh...." Wait. Had this. "... in-suh-lay-shun, where would we put all the cold already in the castle?" It sounded confusing, locking heat inside when all they had was SNOW.
To be honest, he thought Kyroh's answer was the best. Hugging! Agreed! Speaking of that... was Grayson ready?

Ian appeared to upset the professor with his answer so he determined to answer the question more correctly. He raised his hand and answered Perhaps we could charm the masonry stones to be heated. Use the hot air charm to heat the stones which would then emanate heat from them instead of holding the chilling cold.

More ideas?
There was only so much the lots of them could do. "Isn't there a charm that traps heat inside and can keep the cold out?" Y'know, corridor windows included. Could Protego do that? It'll maybe keep the cold out. Or was it only for spells and charms? Whatever. They just needed something to keep the heat in so they won't freeze to death.

Nope. Too cold to care.

| Sardines ♥ BHB ♥ Dallie ♥ Grumpy ♥ MY SUN AND STARS ♥ i love julia As the students began to list of (mostly) magical ideas that would help keep the castle warm, Piers put his chalkboard to work and charmed his piece of chalk to write down the ideas they had. Quote: magical sauna
protective charms/atmospheric charms
hugging
insulation charm
Irie Room
giant bubblehead charm
permanent heating charms
magical space heaters?
heated floors
daydream charms
repelling charm
cold reversing charm
heat shield
Most of the ideas were fairly decent. Some were a little far fetched, but that was to be expected. The problem with most of the large-scale ideas that SEEMED really good was that... Well, they just weren’t that effective anymore. Not as much as they used to be when it wasn’t negative FIVE THOUSAND degrees.
Fuller set the chalk down for the moment. ”Good ideas, guys. Now, let’s go over something important, as I am sure most of you are wondering... if there’s all these possibilities for charms, why are we still freezing our butts off? Well, the wonderful thing about this unnatural weather is that it is SO bad and SO cold, our normal charms aren’t even making a difference anymore.”
Whoop-dee-do. Wasn’t that great?
Okay, onto the positive side. ”A few of you mentioned an insulation charm. A charm that would keep our heat inside the castle and not let it seep out. There is such a charm, and yes, we can apply it to the castle, but we’re going to need your help to enforce it. So today, we will be learning how to perform the insulation charm, and for your homework, you will be performing it all over the castle to hopefully better retain what little heat we have.”
After that somewhat bitter explanation of what they would be doing today, Fuller turned back towards the board and began to write out the incantation for the students. Caelum Saepio CAY-lum - SAY-pee-oh ”Caelum Saepio,” he said out loud, so they could hear him pronounce it. ”In latin, Caelum roughly translates to Climate and Saepio means to close, seal off, or shut in. What we’ll be doing with this charm is sealing off the castle’s climate from the outside, so whatever heat we produce in here, will stay in here. But, as with all charms, the stronger the opposing force, the harder concentration and greater strength from the caster is needed..” That’s why EVERYONE had to do their homework, so they could insulate this castle and stay warm.
Fuller set the chalk down again. ”The wand movement for this charm is very simple.” He got out his wand to demonstrate and traced a sideways figure eight in front of him. ”You will trace a sideways figure eight, also known as the infinity sign, over the area you would like to insulate while saying the incantation. You may have to do that more than once, or even more than a few times, depending on how large the area you wish to insulate is.
“For now, I want you all to first practice speaking the incantation and then practice the wand movement, separately.” OOC: You must make two posts for full points. One post practicing the incantation and one post practicing the wand movement. You have 24 hours before we move on to the practical portion! |
