Christmas break was over and it was time to bring in the new year with some good old fashioned hard work. There was nothing out of the ordinary with the set up of the desks today, the classroom had the windows shut against the chill outside, but light streamed in and it was quite pleasant and bright.
Professor Schirmer sat perched on her desk with her legs folded.... smiling to herself.
She waved her hand and the door opened, ready for the early arrivals to come in and find a seat.
ooc: Class won't start for about an hour, but feel free to post arriving In Character date/time for lesson is 2pm, Tuesday January 12th, 2077.

Questions
"To start with, tell me what you know about Spirits. Ghosts, that is, and no, this isn't Ghoul Studies, I don't expect regurgitated textbooks, just share what you know, or what you've heard. Please try not to repeat information if you can help it."
Kennedy scanned his brain for some information. He's read a few things here and there, but they weren't source of interest for him. He does remember, though, the stuff he watched in muggle films. In the really, really, really, ancient movies some would wear white blankets and scare people. Really, that's NOT scary.
Though he didn't have specific, full-fact answer he would share what he knew, so he raised his hand. "Ghosts are transparent body forms," he said. At Sir Nicholas' Death Day Party he had seen many ghosts and they were see-through. "And I've also heard that ghosts can't be killed." Because they were already dead, right?
"Good day, Mr. Jones." The professor answered happily.
"Mr Gunter, good afternoon." She greeted the Hufflepuff.
"I did Miss Wheatborn. I hope you did too."
"Mr Gert." Althea smiled a greeting.
"Hello Miss Charlotte." Thea greeted. Why was the girl in such a hurry? Well it was better than arriving late, she supposed.
"It was pleasant, Miss McIntyre." The charms professor answered.
"Glad to have you, Miss Potter." For now at least. She smiled at the girl.
"Afternoon, Miss Hollingberry." Althea greeted.
"I can't take this, Mr. Wellheart. But thank you for the thought." Althea had a policy not to accept student gifts. She levitated the sack of cookies back to his desk.
"Hello Miss Penta." The professor greeted the young Slythie.
"I'm quite well Mr. Messer." She smiled at the boy's good manners.
If it wasn't for the fact that she was in a good mood herself, all these enthusiastic Hufflepuffs would probably irritate her, but she simply smiled. "Good day, Miss Campbell."
"Hello Miss Emery." She greeted.
"Good afternoon Miss Reyes." She looked a bit tired, didn't she?
"Hi Mr. Stonewall." She responded. "Afternoon."
"I did Miss. Reinhart. I hope you did also." She returned the girl's smile.
"Good day, Mr. Rusconi." He seemed a little bit distracted.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Vanderbilt."
The professor returned the prefect's smile. "Hello Mr. Escalante."
"I did Miss Pendragon, I hope the same for you."
"Good afternoon, they were enjoyable, Miss Gardiner." The Ravenclaw girl earned a bright smile.
No, the world hadn't ended.
"I did, Miss Burton." She nodded and smiled at the Slytherin.
"Hello Miss Wilson." She watched the girl sit and then decided it was time to start the lesson.
Here's hoping her good mood would last?

"Alright class, its time to begin."
No surprises, right? Althea stood up and took her place near the board.
"To start with, tell me what you know about Spirits. Ghosts, that is, and no, this isn't Ghoul Studies, I don't expect regurgitated textbooks, just share what you know, or what you've heard. Please try not to repeat information if you can help it." After all there was plenty to say, right?
An unusual subject to pounce on, she'd give her that. But it seemed an interesting subject either way! LuLu's hand went up in the air promptly ''Well... A ghost is a disembodied person that was from the wizarding world. Only magical beings can become ghost and even so, not everyone,'' she replied

No surprises, right? Althea stood up and took her place near the board.

Harvey listened as the professor took her place near the board and asked them a question about Spirits or Ghosts..
They were going to be talking about Ghosts and Spirits and things like that?! Well they were part of the wizarding world so why not.. so he slowly put up his hand and answered the question as best as he could.. "A ghost.. is the ... spirit of a... deceased person.. that hasnt .. moved on yet.." he said .. he wasnt comfortable talking about this subject but since this was the class topic.. he would do as best as he could.. He then got ready to copy from the board.. as with the professor standing there he knew that she was going to make a list as the other students answered the question.
Jordan raised his hand, "Professor, is a ghost the echo of a deceased person who has not moved on. But isn't it true that ghosts choose not to pass on, its their choice to whether they become a ghost or pass on but whatever they choose is their pernament choice?" he asked.

Amelia had to admit that she wasn't really the most knowledgeable when it came to ghosts, but she was sure that she knew the basics pretty well. She raised her hands now. "Ghosts are the imprint of a person who has passed on. Their spirit stays behind on earth either because they didn't want to move on. It's the person's choice as to whether or not they want to become a ghost." Or at least that was her understanding of it.
Erm.... they were talking about ghosts in charms? Taylor didnt get the connection but knew that the professor would explain in time. Tay raised her hand and said. "Ghosts can be petrified but they cant be destroyed or killed since well they are already dead...... right?" She had no clue whatsoever if that was right or not and became silent.

Alex wasn't sure why they were talking about ghosts...didn't those discussions belong in...umm, defense against the dark arts? Well gosh, Alex had no idea WHAT subject was appropriate for studying ghosts, but he certainly wouldn't have picked Charms. He raised his hand. "Well ghosts, we know, can be petrified. It happened to poor Sir Nicholas when Harry Potter was here. That's about the extent of it, though, they can't die AGAIN..."

Zhenya considered the question for a moment, then raised her hand. "Professor sometimes when ghosts die you can still see their injuries. Their bodies stay the same," she said.

Vickers angled his head curiously... they were talking about ghosts in Charms class? Curious now the boy was with where this could be headed "They say that ghosts--or spirits-- are our true forms, and that our bodies are merely vessels that the spirit uses to interact with this physical world, this plane of existence.."

After a bit of contemplating Evie raised her hand, "Hmmmm.... Professor, arent ghosts believed to be spirits of deceased people who haven't moved on to the next world or have chosen not to due to inability to leave because of.... Ummm what was it, she'd watched a documentary on it sometime before she had returned to school- oh yeah-
.... because something is stopping them from passing on like a certain duty or job that they haven't completed or don''t know how,or something along that line," answered Evie.
She rather liked talking about spirits and ghosts, her mother told her stories about Ghosts and spirits all the time. And she listened.

Alyssa was yearning to ask a question and so after the last student have their answer, she raised her hand. "Professor are the portraits in Hogwarts haunted by the spirits of those that have passed on? They seem to understand what is going on and they speak when spoken too. But they aren't really alive are they?" Alyssa hoped that her question wasn't a stupid one.
Ghoul Studies? Heh! That sounded good enough for him. He really didn't mind taking Ghoul Studies in exchange of dropping History of Magic. Hades listened carefully to the answers given by other students. His lids dropped, musing into his own thoughts. Soon afterwards, the blue eyes opened and the blonde raised up his hand, "They're not solid. I mean, they can walk glide through solid walls. But, professor. Does poltergeist categorised as spirit?"
No surprises, right? Althea stood up and took her place near the board.

Tayla had chosen a seat up front after greeting the professor. Charms was her favourite subject. She listened as Professor Schirmer began the lesson and wondered why the professor started it with ghosts and spirits. Raising her hand, she replied. "Professor Schirmer," she began. "I watched a Muggle film when I was little. It was called Casper. I remember the characters saying that ghosts have unfinished business."

Ghosts?
Seemed an odd subject for a Charms class. Vashti was both intrigued and nervous about how this would connect with what charm they'd be learning today.
Still, she raised her hand to offer up what she could think of at the moment. "Some ghosts like to celebrate their deathdays, like Sir Nicholas." Which she really didn't understand - why would you want to celebrate they day that you died? "And I think I read somewhere that only witches and wizards can become ghosts." That, even now, seemed unfair. Vashti knew her dad probably wouldn't have wanted to become a ghost anyway, but even so, why should the ability to decide have been withheld from him just because he was a Muggle?
"Why is that, Professor?" she asked suddenly. "Why can only witches and wizards have the ability to become ghosts? Why can't Muggles be ghosts after they die if they want to be?" Then she quickly put her hand down, suddenly feeling a bit foolish. Perhaps she shouldn't have asked...

Ghoul Studies? Ghosts and Spirits? Of course, she had to say she was afraid of those but she was also curious that she only listened to her classmates sharing their answers regarding Professor Schirmer's question. Well..that was also because of the fact she didn't have anything else to say. Her classmates had said it all. Like what spirits are and how they are distinguished from ghosts and what their own characteristics are and all that stuff.
Beezus just sat there open-mouthed, staring at her classmates and trying to absorb everything that they were saying. Were they going to play interact with ghosts and spirits that lesson? Sounds interesting to her.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Why was it that this term, the Professor seemed to make him miserable? First the fire candles in DADA , then the lake hostages in ComC/HoM and now talking about ghosts in Charms?

Yet, he didn't want anyone to see he felt bad so he straightened his back and raised an hand in the air. "Professor?" he said as he shook his hand to get her attention. "I think that a ghost is the soul of someone that has passed away. Normally we can't see them but they can use our energy to manifes...mani...manifesta..." seriously what a difficult word!" they can let themselves appear to us. " there , that sounded like it.
"There are good spirits and bad...and the ones that cause misschief like Peeves" he lowered he arm and waited for the next question.

Hmm what is a ghost? Hannah knew there were ghosts at Hogwarts and sure they weren't mean well not all of them anyway, but she thought them all to be creepy nice or not. A ghost is someone who is dead and they send chills through you if they walk through you." Well she would get chills whether they walked through her or not!
After having listened to the other students say a lot of things about ghosts, the third year raised her hand: ‘I think that the witch or wizard that becomes a ghost was afraid of death’Either that or… ‘Or they are somehow connected to a place’Errr… the place where they died or the place they haunt? Somewhat...‘Like Moaning Myrtle? She is haunting the girls’ bathroom’ And everyone knew the stuff about the Chamber of Secrets and Myrtle’s death and blaaaaaah.
What else did she know about ghosts? It is always annoying when they fly through you. Grrr. That made her want to kill them… AGAIN.
Daesha's dark brows furrowed as she tried to think of something else to be added to what everyone else had already managed to blurt out. "Well, ghosts are like imprints of the dead here on earth," she finally said, repeating what had already been mentioned. Then, she remembered a story her mother had told her a few years back, when she had come home from a trip to the East.
"Oh, and somebody once told me that a certain country in Asia considered spirits as an inevitable part of this world. They believed that almost every area, like forests, waterfalls, and houses have spirits that guard them and that they can't be seen by muggle folk," she added, before quickly quieting up, not wanting to draw any unwanted attention.
Angelina never expected to be talking about ghost in charms but it was alright. Raising her hand she said, "Well, professor spirits are people who lived here on earth and after they pass away they leave earth. The ones that haven't decided to leave just stay on earth and can normally be known as ghost, that the spirit has become." did that make sense? A thought came to her about how what a ghost ment to a younger child compared to what it ment to an adult, which was a big difference.
