As you walk past Professor Draper’s office, you will notice a large barn sitting behind it. After hearing some funny noises, you step forward to investigate.
Upon entering the large barn, you will notice rows of stables that provide housing for the various winged horses, hippogriffs, and other large creatures. While most of the creatures are doubled up, as you walk further into the barn you will notice a few single stalls. In the middle of the barn there is plenty of open space which is perfect for taking some of the smaller creatures out of their pens to play. You will also notice that along the sides of the barn Professor Draper has provided supplies such as gloves, helmets, buckets, brushes etc for your use. Feel free to stop by and interact with the creatures, but remember that you need to sign a permission form before doing so.
Winged Horses:*
- Corena & Oslo
- January & June
- Bear & Rose
- Apollo
- Cygnus & Eridanus
- Ise
- Glitterfly
- Fury & Estelle
- Lincoln
Others:*
-
* denotes requiring permission from Professor in order to interact with them (signing up as a Creatures' Companion will suffice).
OOC: Shout out (and credit) to Joel for creating the above list and for sharing it with me ^^ Y'all are encouraged to play with the creatures, but please no major injuries when dealing with the bigger ones, as James would be keeping an eye out if permission had been asked to play with them. Thanks!
ARI! <3 Ana and Boom were Adi's and were given to Sha but they aren't on the list? <3

They had been back at school for over a month and like the last few years, Marsha had made the Creatures her first priority after her running training. Just like last year, she had gone to the Professor to make sure it was okay to continue what she was doing with her routine and when she had been given permission had handed over her Summer journal. She knew that the Professor was busy, but perhaps he could point out anything she needed to do or document better.
Moving out of the tracks and across the school grounds as the sun was just slowly starting to peak above the mountains, she couldn’t help but feel at home. She opened the doors to the housing and moved into the building just before 6.30am on a Saturday morning. She knew that it was unlikely anyone else would be here - or even up - but she was quiet just in case.
Moving silently, she moved towards the faeries so that she could check in on Ana and Boom and laughed softly to herself as they met her almost instantly flying around her before settling in her hair and on her shoulder. ”Hi. I’ve missed you both. Did you have a good day yesterday?” She asked them as she started to move around the building, so that she could start getting feed and water ready for everyone.

Normally the students weren't up and out this early. There were always the few early risers, but they were a rare species entirely on their own. And he knew that. He also knew exactly who they were. Mostly because they were the few he saw first at breakfast and out on the grounds. Sometimes he'd bump into them around the castle, depending on the day. But this particular morning he was still in his office, taking care of a few things and pouring himself a glass of black tea. The only proper way to start a morning.
Despite being in his office, he heard the barn doors opening, as it was still early and the grounds tended to be at their quietest at this point of the day. There were only a few select students who would possibly be out at 6:30 am on a Saturday morning and he had a good idea of who this one could be. And so, he grabbed the journal he was handed earlier in the term and made his way out and over to the barn.
Miss Roadrunner, not surprised. He stood quietly and watched as she moved around, cutting through the morning air and getting the day started for the creatures in the barn. Casually leaning against the barn door, he didn't say anything. Just waited quietly watching, until she'd turn to notice. Didn't want to interrupt the work she was doing. That and he was a bit impressed.

Marsha was centered and happy. This and running. If she could run in the morning air and then wake up her favourite creatures and give them love and attention before eating a decent breakfast every day she would consider that a life well lived. She had done it every day over Summer and had been happy to see that Lily got on well with the horses too; they had too many for her to hate them after all.
As she carried a pail full of water in one hand, she continued to mindless chat away to Ana and Boom, loving their reactions and ‘chat’ as Adi used to call it. She smiled the whole time she moved around the different sections of the barn and filled various troughs, buckets and bottles with water for all of the different animals. She was quiet, meticulous and entirely focused on the job at hand.
Although she knew Professor Draper would be up, she didn’t expect to see him here, in the barn right now. So she kept her head down as she moved concentrating on keeping her noise levels down so that the creatures who weren’t up yet could continue to sleep or at least be woken up by soft, gentle, caring noises rather than a bull raging through a china shop. When she finally filled the last water bucket for the winged horses, receiving a gently nudge from the nose of Apollo who was always up early enough to see her. Silently, she thought it was just because he had learnt that she usually had apple quarters in her pocket a small, bag in the back of her running jacket. Running her hand carefully over his soft nose, she pulled one out into her hand, holding it out of him to take.
Smiling, she turned away from Apollo to move in the direction of the various feed buckets only to see the Professor leaning against the door, her journal against his side. He looked so comfortable… she had no idea how long he had been there. ”Morning, Professor.” She said softly as she moved closer to him so that they wouldn’t need to talk loudly. Creatures were still sleeping after all. Boom waved from his perch in Marsha’s hair while Ana simply looked at him, silent in her curiosity.

To say she was amusing to watch would be an understatement. The fourth year was just as bubbly and bouncy as she was upon their first interaction early last term. If he had to make a bet, he'd put galleons on the fact that this was just her default setting. No one could muster up this much gusto on the spot. It had to be something inherent.
In fact, she was so immersed in what she was doing that it took her longer than he expected to turn and notice his presence. So long that by now there must've been a permanent little dip in the wooden door from where James weight stayed pressing against it. Finally when she turned to see him, he nodded slowly acknowledging her greeting and returning it with one of his own, "Miss Hanover," he gave the faeries a small grin, watching how easily they stood with the girl. Their loyalty wasn't often easily won either.
"Good day for a run, how was it?" Call it intuition. And the fact that she was still sporting her jogging garb. Had she won medals over the summer? He vaguely remembered that she had rambled on about that once. Not that James pretended he remembered all the details, but he did remember that the two things this one was passionate about included creatures and running. See, he payed attention. Only of course he liked pretending that he didn't care because it often pushed students to excel in order to deem them with deserved acknowledgement. It was a careful game James played. One that wasn't always appreciated by the masses, but one he was well versed in by now.
Praise was earned. Not freely handed out.

She gave him a soft smile as he welcomed her too. See, he could be nice… and he hadn’t told her that she was being an idiot or doing anything wrong when she had been getting the water topped up for all of the creatures, so she figured that was a good thing. At least he hadn’t felt the need to tell her she was doing something wrong? That was always nice.
”Lovely and crisp.” The Welsh girl said with a nod of her head. ”Not too dewy, so was excellent for running suicides.” Not that she liked suicide runs… but they were part of her training program so she had to do them. Just like the push ups and the marathon length runs. Though, when it came to running, she was always up for it.
She motioned her head to her Summer journal. ”Have you finished reading already?” She wasn’t expecting feedback so soon, after all he was a busy man. Creatures, classes, homework, etc. While she wanted to babble, she tried not to. She knew that he didn’t like to listen to her (or anyone) rambling… and while it was hard to do, she managed to - just - withhold the babble of how she was happy and thankful for him looking it over and still helping her through this school year just like last.

Were the days wearing him down? Was he going soft?
Absolutely not.
But it was early morning and he was in a good mood. One that hadn't had the opportunity to be tarnished just yet. So he probably seemed a lot more chipper than usual. Which was probably great news for Marsha who was just naturally chipper by default, or at least that's what James came to assume.
"Is that the normal routine?" she was an interesting one, that's for sure. He wondered if she had to train herself to get up this early all the time, or whether it was something she just enjoyed. He hated mornings as a kid, thought they all did. Being an early riser at such a young age shouldn't be a normal thing. Especially for teenagers. It was something that happened with years of training on James' part. So just... Curious.
Ah and she had picked up on the fact that he came armed with her journal. "Good eye," he said, waving it in the air, as if by noticing it she had won some sort of game. Lowering it once more, he used his fingers to flip quickly through it. "Interesting stuff you've got here," he nodded. "Excellent detail," he noted, "Careful observation," he paused, "Careful penmanship."
In other words, it was impressive.

Marsha Hanover loved being up in the morning. She knew most of her friends thought she was insane for it, but growing up with animals it kind of just happened? So, when Draper asked about her routine she nodded and then paused, looking thoughtful. ”Well, kind of.” She told him with a smile. ”I run roughly from 5am to 6am and then I do training for half an hour… a mix of different exercises that my coaches want timings and statistics for.”
She paused and beamed at him. ”And then I come here.”
The time she spent in the barn took her up until breakfast before getting ready for classes. ”In the afternoon, Vince and I usually run too… and I usually do some extra training through my Judo practise as well.” Though… she didn’t do her judo practise every day, she did make sure to practise at least three times a week. It made sure that she didn’t get sloppy.
Marsha grinned. She would definitely take that as a compliment, afterall - you needed to have a good eye when looking after creatures. Making sure they were safe, comfortable, warm/cold enough, fed, happy and unharmed were all serious points of animal care that meant you needed to observe, learn and know about the animals in your care.
Her breath caught and she stared at her Professor as if he had just told her she had won an early entry scholarship to a Dragon or Griffin Reserve… Did… he… just… say????? She succeeded just to not jump on the spot at his comments... no, not comments, PRAISE.
She smiled slowly and nodded. ”Thank you, I know it is definitely worth the time and work - as a small observation now could lead to realising your animals are unwell in the future if their habits change.” Being around so many horses constantly certainly helped in that regard, you simply knew them and could tell when something was wrong.

Alright maybe he took it back, he wasn't actually all that chipper. And he was in no way ready for the novel that he realized Marsha would begin to rapid-fire spit out any second. Merlin, normally he was good at prompting short, sweet responses. But the moment he asked, he KNEW this would take an alternative route. Wonderful.
Her 'kind of' struck him as odd, but it wasn't long before she jumped into the longer, expected explanation. Ah, of course there was a lot more. Of course. Blah, blah, blah. There was a lot to take in here, okay? Honestly, at least he made it look like he was paying absolute attention. He did raise his brows--only momentarily--at the part about training, as it only took him a second to remember that she had mentioned competitive running the first time they had spoken. Track or something, he wasn't completely remembering the details here. There was only one of him and 60000000 students (so it seemed). Remembering every detail would be far too great of a feat.
"Interesting," was all he said after her lengthy explanation. She had used enough words for the two of them.
Asking an open ended questions, however, was not his only regret as when Marsha's face lit up like a Christmas tree... James wasn't sure he did the right thing to admit that he liked her journaling. "Precisely, just make sure to keep this same detail as you continue," And with that he held the book out for her to take back once more. "And if you ever need someone to look over some more of your work, I'd be up for it again.... But don't expect this quick of a turnaround every time," he winked.
Kicking his foot against the wood, he stood up straight no longer leaning against the door. A few steps into the barn and he turned back around to face the girl once more, "Who's your favorite?" Speaking about the animals, clearly.

Hadleigh entered the barn with the intent of checking on some of the creatures. Helping to give food or water to some of them, maybe even a nice brushing. Possibly take on or two out for a walk even if the wind let up a little bit.
The creatures always made the sixth year feel more at home. Only when she entered it didn't appear to be as calm as she was used. Hazel eyes fell almost instantly on a younger person digging through the straw. They appeared to be looking for something maybe. Tilting her head a little in confusion she slowly made her way closer. "Hey, is everything okay?" She called out hoping to catch their attention.

"Hello?," Hady called out again. Maybe they hadn't heard her. That happened when you were looking for something. You get in a zone and didn't focus on anything because you had to find what you wanted to find.
Slowly so not to startle the girl as she realized upon getting closer she touched her shoulder. "What're you looking for, maybe I could help?"
Win. Win. Maybe she could help find whatever was lost. Then the mess could be cleaned up. Soon. Before the creatures got upset.

Esme?
A book?
Well alright. A book would be easy to find in the straw bit why was she talking that way? Hady frowned a little bit. "What book? Are you sure it's in here?" She could be helpful.
Wait!
"Esme! What are you doing?!" She called out following her and grabbing her hand. "You're going to cut your fingers up doing that. What's going on?" Hady couldn't figure out what was going on but something wasn't right. Her friend looked completely out of it. Like she was cursed or something...

Miranda had slowly made her way down to where the Barn was.... She could sense that there was what she searched for was near but when she entered the barn all she saw were different magical creatures.... Not what she had heard been conveyed through that strange lullaby that continously played in her head and drown out all other thought.... She turned around and headed out without securing the door.

What in the world...
Hady seriously stared at her friend when the younger girl struggled to get free from the hold she had on her. So she needed a book. Big deal. Chances were slim to none that this 'book' was inside the walls!
"Okay, okay um how about you stop doing that before you hurt yourself and I'll help you find this book?" That was good, right? Anything was better then watching a friend act like a complete loon and harm themselves...and well if her suggestion wasn't of any help then she would need to find a Professor before she had to cast some type of charm on the girl to get her to stop what she was doing.

Esme kept struggling.
Need to get free. Need to find book. Why was girl keeping her from it? Can't she see Esme NEED it??? But... she want to help. Help find book. That good. Esme get book and bring to light. Do what is necessary. She stop struggling now.
"Spell book to give light." Have to find. NEED to find.

Hadleigh let out a breath blowing some strands of hair off her face. "Esme. Hady will help you find the spell book but book isn't in here. Come with me to get the spell book?"
Okay so she had no idea what 'spell' book her friend was speaking of or where to find it but that wasn't even important right now. If she could get Esme to follow her then she could get her to Professor Draper or the Healer. Whatever was going on around here wasn't good and it needed to be fixed. Quickly.
