Department Head Atticus Aldredge stood alone a few yards away from the Forbidden Forest, by a path that would lead the class to the area where they would be learning today. His arms were folded behind his back and he had a warm, inviting smile on his face as he waits for the students to arrive. Though he looks friendly and composed on the outside, the inside was an entirely different matter.
It was an incredibly weird feeling being back at Hogwarts after all these years, especially to teach a class of all things. He never would've thought he'd do something like this - and fortunately (for both him and the children, probably) it was only temporary. Teaching wasn't really his thing, and being at Hogwarts brought back so many memories...
But no need to think about all that. On the bright side of it all, he was teaching a subject that he absolutely loved and about a creature he adored. So it really wasn't too bad.
--
OOC:The lesson hasn't started yet, so feel free to RP your character arriving to class. Don't go down the path yet though! Atticus will escort you all down it once class actually starts, which will probably be sometime around 7:00 PM EST (12:00 AM GMT) tomorrow. The lesson has started! Remember, don't post your character arriving late if you don't want to lose points. Just jump in and answer whatever question happens to be up at the time!
Atticus shook his head. "They don't eat plants or roots, no," he said. "They do eat birds though." He nodded. "They're carnivores, actually," Atticus corrected. "So no to the berries, but yes to the birds and rodents."
A question! And a good one to ask, too. Atticus thought for a moment before responding. "I haven't seen anything that says you can't curtsy," he answered. "However, I'd recommend that you still bow, just to be on the safe side." Plus, hippogriffs couldn't curtsy, whereas they could bow. No need to do something that they couldn't do, yes?
That was good logic, Atticus would give the boy that. "They do eat small mammals and insects, correct, but they don't eat much vegetation since they're carnivorous creatures."
Text Cut: answers with insects, birds, small mammals, rats, ferrets, etc.
Atticus nodded at each of the correct answers. It was good to see that most knew this much about hippogriffs. He figured most of them would know the answer to the next question too. "Excellent job, all of you. A hippogriff's diet generally consists of things like birds, small animals such as ferrets and rats, and insects.
"Now, I have one more question before I call the hippogriff herd. If you owned a hippogriff, what would you be required by law to do everyday?"
Justin quickly raised his hand again, " Sir, A person owning a Hippogriff would have to cast a Disillustionment charm daily so the creature would not be seen by muggles especially when in flight."
Atticus nodded at each of the correct answers. It was good to see that most knew this much about hippogriffs. He figured most of them would know the answer to the next question too. A HERD?
Jayden was so excited, it was hard for her to contain herself.
"Sir, wouldn't you by law have to cast a disillusionment charm everyday so that the muggles wouldn't see?"
Atticus shook his head. "They don't eat plants or roots, no," he said. "They do eat birds though." He nodded.

William raised his hand. " If you want to own a HippoGrif, you mmust use a disillusionment charm" Willaim told the man.

Zhenya raised her hand, "It is required by law that if you own a Hippogriff you must perform a Disillusionment charm on them every day which is to protect it, as well as the muggles from coming into contact with eachother and to prevent any harm, because muggles would not know what the creature was, or how to approach it," she said.

Gasp! Professor was going to call a whole hippogriff herd! That would be interesting and exciting!
Ira thought about the question asked but didn't know the answer. But from others' answers she gathered that the owner must cast spell. So she raised her hand up and answered, "Sir, the owners of hippogriff are required to cast a, umm... a disillusionment charm on it to prevent it being seen by the muggles..."

Call out the Hippogriff herd?
Call out the Hippogriff herd?!?!
Dear Merlin! This was the moment Sierra had feared since she'd first figured out what this lesson would be about. Could she manage to be pleasant enough for a Hippogriff to accept her without attacking?! How could a naturally not-so-polite child accomplish this!? Hmm?
She tried to cast those thoughts to the side for the time-being. There was another question being asked, so she had some time before the Herd of Terror was brought out. "If you owned a Hippogriff, you'd have to cast a Disillusionment Charm on it everyday," she said, raising her hand, "Or else the Muggles might see it."
The man was going to release a whole herd of Hippogriffs on the class?! That sounded a tad crazy.
Ok and the last question, Auggie's first idea of the thing you had to do everyday was walk it and then clean up after it makes it's mess...but that was for Muggle dogs. He thought it may be the same but was too embarrassed to ask. Instead he tried his hardest to rememeber what he had read the last time in the textbook. "Sir, you need to cast a disillusionment Charm on the creature each day in order for it to be invisible and that way Muggles won't come across it."
Whoahh! He was going to Call a whole Hippogriff Herd.Mad!Thinking about the question,''Sir,You must cast a disillusionment Charm on the Hippogriff So if Muggles can't come accros it.''
Valerie could have sworn she'd felt, yes felt, the colour drain out of her face. One Hippogriff she could deal with. Hippogriffs were actually pretty cool in Valerie's opinion. But a whole herd?! Oh no, no way. What if she angered one of them? What if the entire herd decided to trample her? What if she got eaten?
Valerie got more and more shaky with each new thought. Terrified would be an understatement of what she was currently feeling.
Snap out of it, Valerie. Hogwarts is safe, there's no way you could get trampled...or eaten. Hippogriffs don't even eat people. Get a hold of yourself!
She shook her head, as if to banish her fear, and raised her hand to answer the question. "Sir, you would have to cast a disillusionment charm." Valerie smiled slightly, her voice had only shook a little bit.

"Uhmmm." Jonathan thought as the question was raised again. "Since they a re magical creatures, the owner should cast a Disillusionment Charm to prevent muggles to see it" he answered. Well, that's not fair at all. Muggles should at least see what wizards and witches have.

HERD? A hippogriff herd?
With an open mouth and wide eyes, Beezus stared at the Ministry official. Merlin, they would be meeting a herd of hippogriffs soon. And maybe they'll be playing learning a lot about them. She was utterly excited.
And that was why when the next question was released, her hand had immediately shot up at the air. "Well.. first and foremost, someone who owns a hippogriff must cast a Disillusionment Charm on the animal everyday so as not to expose its existence to muggles." Hah! Take that.. Now hippogriffs, come on out!
Text Cut: answers with insects, birds, small mammals, rats, ferrets, etc.

Wait. Whaaa??? o.O
He has got a herd of Hippogriffs? COOL!
Janice thought for a while. Eagle's beak and sharp talons on an oversized chicken--they would probaby scare off Muggles if they encounter them. Sh eraised her hand and answered.
"We could always cast the Shield Charm, then put the Muffliato charm, Dissillusion Charm, and Muggle Repelling Charm on it. The Muffliato's for its screech, in case Muggles heard it and decided that they will do some Eagle-Hunting. Dissillusion's for making it invisible-" She added,"-Ish. And the Muggle Repelling Charm is for the Muggles who decided to go wandering despite of hearing muffled noises or seing something that is not something. Yeah."
Justin became really excited at the prospect of seeing an entire herd of Hippogriffs. He thought of how his mother would've loved to see it. " Bring out the Herd!"

She had tuna fish cookies that she gave to Walnut, so those were made of meat and probably things that he could enjoy should the hippogriff so desire.
Oh, wait, right. There was a question. "I suppose first you would need to prove that you were competent enough to be able to keep a hippogriff," she said with her hand high in the air, perhaps waving just the slightest bit with enthusiasm. There was a reason for those ratings after all. "Wizarding law demands that all hippogriff owners cast a Disillusionment Charm on the creature daily to prevent non-magical people from seeing them."
But...non-magical they were not...so they could see them...and SOON! Kurumi's hand went back down and she stared at the man with a wide smile on her face.
Oh, this one was excited, wasn't she? That was good, since Atticus had noticed that there seemed to be a few who didn't appear all that thrilled at the idea of meeting a hippogriff. "That is more up to the one who is selling the hippogriff to make sure of; it isn't really required by law," he replied. It was a pretty well-known though unspoken rule that surely most hippogriff owners abided by it. You wouldn't give a hippogriff to an eleven -year-old, would you? "But good thinking." She was certainly correct in her second answer, so he nodded.

"The Disillusionment Charm is the only one of those that is required by law," Atticus said, "but that's excellent thinking. Those are all excellent spells to use to ensure no Muggles accidentally happen upon your hippogriff." It was great to see the students thinking outside the box.

Atticus nodded to each of them as they answered. Good to know that, should they ever own a hippogriff later in life, they were aware of one of the things that was required of them. "You are all correct - all hippogriff owners are required to cast a Disillusionment Charm on them to prevent any Muggles from seeing the hippogriff."

Atticus smiled. "If you insist." Turning to address the rest of the class, he continued, "I'll be back in just a few minutes." He deftly climbed over the fence surrounding the paddock, turned, and disappeared into the trees.
Within minutes, the sound of his footsteps could be heard, but they were not the only footsteps heard. The occasional flapping of wings and screeches could be heard as well. Then Atticus appeared, a great herd of hippogriffs trailing behind. They were all a variety of colors, like black, grey, bronze, chestnut, and roan. Atticus walked back over to the fence while most of the hippogriffs spread themselves out among the paddock. One hippogriff though almost appeared to be following Atticus, though it still kept several feet between itself and the man.
"So now it's time for our activity," he said as he reached the fence, addressing the class once more. He drew his wand and flick it at the black tarp, which Vanished. The object it had been hiding turned out to be two bins - one was filled with dead insects, the other with dead ferrets.
"These hippogriffs are hungry, and I'd like you all to feed them. Now would be a good time to put on your gloves if you brought them." Unless, of course, they liked touching dead things, which he doubted. "I do have extra if you forgot yours." He conjured up a small bin of gloves next to the other two bins.
"Once you're ready, take either a ferret or a handful of insects, and select the hippogriff you want to meet. There are enough hippogriffs here for each of you to interact with. But remember, DON'T immediately approach them. Keep several yards between yourself and the hippogriff. Bow, keep eye contact with your hippogriff, and do not blink. Wait until the hippogriff bows back to you, and once they do, you may approach carefully but don't take even this as a sign to immediately go up to them. Offer the food. The hippogriff will be more inclined to come closer to you. Once they do, give them the food. You may then pet them if you wish - praising them is also recommended. But whatever you do, do NOT insult them. I don't want to send you to the hospital wing, and I know you don't want to spend a beautiful day like this in there. So don't do it." He gave them a very stern look at this. Then he continued, and his look disappeared.
"Now, I'm sure there are some of you who may not be comfortable with interacting with one of these hippogriffs today - and that's okay. I have brought my own hippogriff, and he's even tamer than the Hogwarts hippogriffs." And the Hogwarts herd was pretty tame, especially in comparison to an ordinary, wild hippogriff. Atticus gestured towards the grey hippogriff that still stood nearer to him than the rest. "His name is Aquila, and while he still has the pride that every hippogriff possesses, he is far less likely to attack. If you would prefer to take turns and work with him, then come to me once you have retrieved the food. Otherwise, get your food and go off and meet a hippogriff - just remember my instructions." That was an order.
OOC: Alright, so I just have a few things to add/reiterate from what Atticus said. Like DON'T have your character do anything that would cause a hippogriff to harm your character, like approaching it without bowing, insulting it to its face, etc. However, it IS okay if your character messes up the smaller things that wouldn't cause the hippogriff to attack, like accidentally blinking when bowing and having to start over, or having to bow for a really long amount of time, or anything small like that. I'm sure everyone won't have a hippogriff that will immediately accept your character, so creativity is very welcome and appreciated - just don't do anything that would realistically cause the hippogriff to attack. Okay?
In order to get full points for this activity, you must RP your character doing everything that Atticus instructed above in at least 5 posts. Titling your posts with the number and what you're RPing in it would be great but is not necessary. I also won't require each post to be a certain length, but they should be more than just a couple sentences long. You have until around 5:30 PM EST on Saturday, November 26, to get your posts up.
Have any questions? Feel free to ask Atticus in this thread or send me a PM.

Post # 1 - choosing a hippogriff and selecting the animal
Potter Nurse || Hockey obsession <3 | Go Wings! || Geaux Tigers!
It wasn't long before the professor re-entered the clearing, and with him, he brought many, many, many hippogriffs. For a moment, Kourt stood in awe of the massive creatures. They weren't beautiful in a physical way, but it appeared as though there was a certain gracefulness in the way they stood.
She slowly pulled her gloves on, simply watching the creatures and determining which she would like to approach. Her gaze moved from each one until they settled onto a chestnut colored one. Chestnut was such a pretty color, and the word itself just reminded her of the holidays.
With a wry smile, she approached the container that held the ferrets and plucked one out. Hopefully...this was going to work. She would feel more confident if she had done this before, but as long as she followed the instructions, she should be fine.
Kourt turned and began to make her way through the other students towards the hippogriff that she had selected. No better time to try than the present.
Presley pulled on her purple gloves and walked over to the food. Cringing, she picked up a ferret. Dead things were so gross. Even grosser however, were the insects, so she chose the lesser of the two evils. She scanned the Hippogriffs, and found the smallest, least intimidating one. She slowly approached it, leaving a few yards of distance. Presley still wanted to curtsy, but she knew the man had told her to bow anyway. She made eye contact with the horse-bird and slowly bowed, feeling strange.
The hippogriff stared at her.....and stared..and stared. Finally it bowed as well, and Presley stepped closer, offering it the dead ferret that she was eager to get out of her hands.
Justin listened to the instructions that were given by the teacher. After he had finished explaining what was expected of them Justin pulled his gloves from his school bag and put them on. He scanned the herd until his eye was caught by a greyish black Hippogriff. Leaving 20 or so yards between them Justin looked the hippogriff in the eye until the animal noticed him. Once he knew he had it's attention Justin began to bow slowly while trying to maintain the eye contact.

Kourtney came to a stop several yards from her chosen hippogriff, as instructed by the professor. For a moment, she contemplated naming the creature. It would make the interaction more personable in any way. Chessy. Mmhmm. That would do.
The young girl drew in a breath, and slowly bent forward into a bow, her eyes pinned to those of the hippogriff. Don’t blink…don’t blink….She hardly dared to breathe. She just stood there, staring at the creature.
Nothing. The hippogriff simply stared back and gave a ruffle of its feathers. O…kay. Of course this was going to be more difficult than expected.
She continued to hold its gaze, now struggling not to blink. C’mon…..c’mon….Her eyes squinted, and just as the hippogriff made a move, she blinked. Uh-oh.
But apparently the massive creature had missed it for it was just sweeping up from its own bow. Oh. Good. Now she could try to approach it, but not too quickly, of course.
Justin stood there in a bowing posture for what seemed to him an eternity. His chosen hippogriff stared at him hard and and finally made it's decision about Justin and excepted him. Th e hippogriff then bowed to Justin and then they both rose from their bowing position together as they mantained eye contact. Justin was careful not to blink and upset his hippogriff.

Kourt felt slightly lightheaded as she took in a deep breath. First part down…now to tempt it with a little food. Her arm lifted, the dead ferret swinging slowly from her hand. The hippogriff’s eyes moved from hers to rest upon the ferret. It made a low sound and took a few steps forward.
That…was good.
She stretched her arm out a bit, and the hippogriff’s orange eyes zeroed in on the movement. Not too fast, Kourt. She cautioned herself, warily looking at the steel colored beak. It looked capable of snapping things with little to no problem.
She waited. If the hippogriff truly was hungry….it would eventually come forward, but she was making no move towards it. That would show disrespect and she didn’t want to insult the creature.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the hippogriff stepped even closer, stopping a few feet in front of her. She took that as a sign that she was able to approach now.
The Gryffindor bravely closed the gap between them and held out the ferret. The hippogriff lowered its head and its beak clamped around the dead animal, pulling it free from her grasp.
Oh! She glanced down, checking her hand. Her fingers were all there. That was an accomplishment in itself.
Holding the dead ferret in his right hand Justin slowly started to raise his arm to show the hippogriff that he had a treat for him. The hippogriff eyed Justin and the ferret in which held. It cocked it's head to the side and Justin took that as a sign of Interest...at least in the dead ferret. So, he calmly started to approach his hippogriff until they were just a few yards away from each other. Justin stopped so as not to encroach Too much and waited for the hippogriff to make the few steps it would take to close the gap between them.
