Chapter 42
Retracing her steps, Ginny made it back to McGonagall’s classroom. She couldn’t believe she had actually gotten through to Harry! What she needed to do now was distract McGonagall long enough for Harry to do whatever he had to do in the headmistress’ office.
Cautiously, she opened the classroom door. Luckily she was still sitting grading papers.
“Sorry to disturb you, professor, but I think I may have forgotten my quill in here.” Ginny said, having already rehearsed that in her head on the walk back.
McGonagall looked up from her work and raised an eyebrow at her. She then nodded her head, giving Ginny permission to look.
Ginny walked slowly toward the desk she was working at. Bending down, she pretended to look on the floor for her quill. She had to keep McGonagall in sight. Hopefully Harry would be done by the time she decided to leave.
After about tem minutes of searching, McGonagall said, “I don’t think it is here miss Weasley. Now kindly go back to your dormitory.”
Ginny gulped. With quick thinking, she said, “Um…Professor? I forgot the password to the Fat Lady.” She then let out a real blush. It was pretty embarrassing to have to admit that, but she needed to keep her away from her office.
McGonagall sighed. “You are being very forgetful tonight.” She commented, but stood from her desk.
They walked in silence toward the Fat Lady’s portrait. Ginny’s heart began to pound as they reached the entrance to the Gryffindor tower. Was that enough time? Should she say something else? What else can she do to distract her?
“Blinding Lights.” McGonagall said. Immediately the Fat Lady swung open her portrait.
“Um...thank you Professor.” Ginny said.
“Your welcome. Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to my chamber.” She replied.
Ginny gulped and walked into the dormitory. As the portrait closed, she thought about opening it again and going after her. But before she could, a body appeared before her with a smile on his face.
“Thank you Gin.” Harry said.
“Sure. Did you do what you had to do?” Ginny asked.
“Yeah, well, most of it.”
“What do you mean?”
”I need to finish it.” He said.
“Finish what?”
”I’ll be back.”
“No. Let me come with you.” Ginny said stomping her foot down.
“Ok, ok. Get under the cloak.” Harry chuckled. She walked over to him and he threw the silky material over her head. They then maneuvered their way out of the common room.
Standing so close to him, she realized that he had things that he didn’t have before. What looked like the hilt of a ruby studded sword was sticking out by his hip and a baby blue blanket was hanging from out his pocket. She gave him a curious look, but kept quiet. It was a little harder walking down the stairs together.
She didn’t say anything as they made their way across the empty entrance hall and slyly walk out the great oak doors, even though she was bursting with questions. The night was chilly, with a slight breeze seeping through the cloak.
“Where exactly are we going?” Ginny asked as they made their way across the dewy grass.
“To the forest. I don’t really know what is going to happen, but at least the whole castle wont wake up.” He replied, passing Hagrid’s hut.
“What do you mean you don’t know what is going to happen? What are we doing?” Ginny asked.
She saw Harry sigh next to her. “Well, you know how I’ve been doing something for Dumbledore?”
“Harry, Dumbledore is de-“
”I know! But he left me something to do. I have to destroy it now. I don’t want people around and it was the reason I didn’t want to bring you along.” He said.
“Why do you have to do this? If Dumbledore is gone, you shouldn’t have to kill yourself over something that doesn’t matter.”
“It
does matter! It makes all the difference in the world!” Harry said losing his patience with her. He stopped in the middle of the clearing and threw the cloak off. It took Ginny complete by surprise and she watched him carefully.
Harry turned back sharply and looked at her. His eyes softened when he saw her cautious eyes and he sighed.
“I’m sorry Ginny. But this is important. When all the horcruxes are gone, I’ll have a chance against Voldermort.”
“Horcruxes?” she asked slowly.
“They are items that hold a part of Voldermort’s soul.”
Ginny flinched at these words. She wasn’t sure if it was because he said his name, or that fact about it being part of his soul. This was crazy. How could he possible destroy part of his soul? This was insane.
“Harry, you-“
“Gin, I do have to do this.” Harry said reading her mind.
Ginny sighed. He wasn’t going to stop until one of them was dead. She shouldn’t stand in his way and bring more trouble for him.
“Ok.” She said, admitting defeat. Harry gave her a small smile and slipped the baby blue blanket from his pocket. She then watched as he placed the blanket on a small boulder. The blanket fell open, revealing a baby pacifier.
Ginny tilted her head at the item. This thing was supposed to hold a part of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named’s soul? This was beyond bizarre.
Harry looked up at Ginny before pulling out his wand. “Step back.” He said. She did as she was told and stood over by a tree.
He then pulled out the red ruby sword. It had to be the same one that was sitting in the headmistress’ office. It was the same one she had seen in her first year down in the Chamber of Secrets.
As the sword hung in Harry’s hand, the pacifier began to vibrate. Ginny’s eyes widened as he lifted the sword. It all happened in a matter of two seconds. A bright emerald green light shot into the air, illuminating the forest. A soft buzzing sound grew louder and louder. Ginny looked around wildly, but saw that Harry hadn’t even touched the pacifier yet. It had grown defensive before Harry had even done anything.
When the sword was millimeters away from the mouthpiece, a green sparks shot out. One of them grazed Harry’s forearm. Ginny cringed along with him. But he didn’t hesitate; he kept moving closer to the mouthpiece.
What happened next made Ginny fall backwards and she let a small cry leave her lips. A loud shriek came from the pacifier. It sounded like a baby being tortured. Harry took a step back, obviously taken by surprise.
The sword went limp in his hand as he stared at the pacifier. It then stopped its shrieking. Leaving the forest quiet for a few seconds. It the started a melodic cry, which slowly turned into a hypnotizing coo.
Ginny sat up and looked at the baby item. Something was weird about it. What brought her back to her senses was Harry’s outstretched hand, reaching for the mouthpiece. His face was blank and his eyes were vacant.
One thing made Ginny shoot up, and that was the knowledge that Harry shouldn’t touch it. She didn’t know why she knew touching that thing would be bad news for Harry, but she couldn’t let him do it. She ran over to him and took a hold of his outstretched arm.
“Harry!” she said pulling on him. But he was too strong for her. She can’t let him touch the mouthpiece! She can’t!
“Harry you need to stop!” Ginny screamed as his finger grazed the mouthpiece.
Ginny let go just in time to see the pacifier turn back to the bottle green light. Harry then began to scream at the top of his lungs.
As Harry lurched back and forward, his finger still touching the mouthpiece, Ginny saw the sword in his hand. She shot her hand forward and took the hilt with her hands. She then took the sword and shoved the point into the middle of the mouthpiece.
Harry was thrown backwards into a near by tree and the pacifier let out a shrill screech before a small explosion happened on the small boulder.
The forest then returned to its natural, quiet, peaceful nature.
There a nice long post. Im sorry I took so long to post. Hopefully this long one will make up for it
