Default Arithmancy/Muggle Studies Joint Lesson

The Arithmancy classroom is ready to be filled on a sunny February morning. Frost particles stubbornly cling to the windows, refusing to be melted by the weak winter sunlight. A large space has been cleared at the back of the classroom, but there does not seem to be any indication as to the reason. Perhaps Tanner is simply in the mood for early spring cleaning, but the abundance of cobwebs makes this unlikely. Plenty of desks are crammed, rather more tightly than usual, into the front of the room to accommodate the extra students from Professor Moxley's class. You don't mind being close to your neighbor, right?

OOC: Class has officially started!

Kate didn't really care for Arithmancy. She didn't really care for Muggle Studies either. These two professors, though?! Both were AWESOME! Tanner had been one of the first professors Kate had met last school year, and the woman had instantly made Kate feel safe and protected in a brand new, unfamiliar place. Moxley was just cool. Really cool. "Hello, Professor Tanner and Professor Moxley," Kate greeted, walking into the room.

That was when Kate got a chance to take a look around the classroom, and the main thing that stood out to her was the cobwebs. Adi had said there were cobwebs, but she had yet to see any. At least, not any that would be considered 'in abundance'. She blinked at them but continued in to take her place amongst the others.

Ahem. ANYWAY. He grinned and bounced in the room past both of the professors saluting both. That was solider speak for hey...in case they were curious.
Sometimes she questioned things. This wasn't one of those times. Tiara merely saluted back with gusto, staying silent as did the Slytherin.

Other than the seating arrangement with the desks close together, she was fine. She could survive one lesson... Maybe. Penelope thought about an astronomy lesson during her first year at Hogwarts, the one where they had done the activity with the giant hamster ball things. She had only lasted a few minutes, if that, into that activity before completely freaking out and crying until Professor Flamsteed and Jasmine had come to rescue her. The screaming and crying in a giant ball incident had somehow ended up in the astronomy section of the yearbook. That had been in her first year. She was a fourth year now, so she wasn't going to cry or anything like that. Cramped desks were different than being trapped in a ball, but the desks still made her uneasy. Just looking at how close together the desks were made her nervous. She didn't like it, not one bit. Professor Moxley telling them to pack it on in really wasn't helping with her claustrophobia.
No, Tiara didn't exactly understand the problem. The room was still the same size as always, after all. But her lack of comprehension did not change Miss Wright's obvious discomfort. "How about this," she said softly. "Why not take a seat at the back of the room? You can move it backwards a bit so you feel comfortable, then when we need the space, you can simply move it back." No harm done.

Why the girl had trailed off into oblivion Tiara couldn't say. But she knew she'd keep an eye on her just in case she was having some mental difficulties of some sort. "Hello, I am just fine today, thank you. Any seat that's open, Miss Valentine."

Professor Moxley’s voice made him look in her direction and he quickened his pace in getting his book. One of his books, seeing as he did not have an Arithmancy book. Where they going to pair up later? Muggle studies student together with Arithmancy student?
How thoughtful! "No, please do assist him! It will go much faster that way." Many hands make light work, after all. "A splendid idea."

She walked into the oddly spaced classroom. Not a great use of space, she thought, but it must be for a reason, and Zhenya was sure all would be revealed soon enough. "Hello Professor Tanner, hello Professor Moxley," Zhenya greeted both professors with a big smile, before squeezing into a desk.
"Good morning, my dear!" She looked ready and excited for the lesson, and Tiara heartily approved of her attitude. Therefore she received an approving nod.

"Hello yourself, my dear." She avoided using her name because, well, she wasn't really sure she would say it correctly. Better safe than sorry.

Another student that held a special place in her heart, but for a different reason than Tobias. "Welcome to class, my dear. Any desk you'd like," she said, spreading her hand in front of her.

Well, they had a lot to accomplish and no more time than usual to do it in, so they really should get a move on here. "Good morning, students!" she said brightly. "Welcome to Arithmancy class.. and Muggle Studies class!" she said, inclining her head towards Meredith. "I know we still have a few moments before the bell to begin class rings, but we have a lot to do today. Now, many of you will have guessed the topic for today's lesson to be muggle mathematics.." she began. After a slight hesitation, she finished with, "..but that would not be correct." Then Tiara paused for a few moments to let the sighs of relief she knew would come die down.

With a flick of her wand, a large number appeared on the board.

Quote:
441,315,565,100
Extremely large, in fact. "Today for the Arithmancy portion we will be working mostly out of chapter three. So, first task as we wait for any last minute stragglers: please use the tried and true reduction method for this number." No need for her to explain why they were doing it just yet.. she'd let the suspense hang for juuuust a bit longer.

OOC: Class has officially begun, but if you need to wrap up a conversation at the beginning of your post that's totally fine!

Uhh...what?

See, this was why Kate didn't like Arithmancy. There was no wild guessing here. In most other subjects, you could provide an opinion or give a thought. In Arithmancy, though, you had to arrive at a certain number, and there was no other way around that. Kate copied the numbers onto her parchment.

441,315,565,100

Kate completed the work the best way she knew how.

4 + 4 + 1 = 9
3 + 1 + 5 = 9
5 + 6 + 5 = 16 ... 1 + 6 = 7
1 + 0 + 0 = 1

9 + 9 + 7 + 1 = 26
2 + 6 = 8

8: Authority, finances, business, success, material wealth, self-mastery, complex thought/reasoning, fluidity, movement

Sooo..., had she done the right thing? What was the tried and true method anyway?

be curious, not judgmental

TRIO TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME.

It didn't matter that Tanner didn't like her own classroom set up, which would NORMALLY have made Sophie frown at her, but she had TOBES AND ZANDER ON EITHER SIDE OF HER. Squished between them, even, and LIFE WAS BEAUTIFUL.

When class got started, Sophie was grinning goofily, unable to contain her elation from having such superb company - but when Tanner gave them a mission to reduce a big number, the Ravenclaw realized she hadn't even gotten out her materials for class. She'd just been sitting there, basking in the presence of her best friends.

Whoops.

So she took out her materials, then, and got settled briskly before squinting up at the board. As tempted as she was to just add up the numbers and get an answer in her head, she knew Tanner probably wanted them to show work and write it down for whatever reason, so... the prefect did so.

Text Cut: The nerd's work
441,315,565,100

4+4+1 +3+1+5 +5+6+5 +1+0+0 = 35
3+5 = 8

She left some space between the numbers and the plus signs to make sure she didn't miss a number as she copied it, and she made quick work of adding them up. Thirty-five reduced to eight, and... she'd arrived at an answer maybe too quickly, so possibly incorrectly, but she was too hyped up to care.

Eight. And she knew chapter three - the number eight had to do with authority figures and success and wealth, so she wrote down those characteristics beside the number "8" on her paper. But... what was this all about? Hmm. Maybe that was the amount of money someone had? MUGGLE money, since this was partly Muggle Studies class? Sophie Brown gave it some thought, and she figured that made a fair amount of sense. Maybe it was the biggest amount of documented money a Muggle person had ever had. Could've been, couldn't it?

...right. Eden smiled a little at Tanner but didn't like the bubbling nerves in her stomach right now. She should have skipped. She really should have. She was going to blow BUBBLES at this...she just knew it.

ugh.

WHAT? EDEN WAS ALREADY LOST. HOW EVEN. SHE HAD NO IDEA WHAT TANNER WAS TALKING ABOUT.

Deep breaths, McGee.

She tried to look at someone else's paper to see what they were doing..Merlin's pants. Reduction method? Whaaaa? What even was that..."Um--Professor? I have no idea what the reduction method is..."

She felt really stupid.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Sunglasses? O_O Adi promptly whipped off his specs to see if they had been magically transformed into sunglasses but nope they were the same black rimmed things. Er, did Tanner need specs, too? "I can't, Professor. The sunlight hurts my eyes.'' He crammed the apparatus on this face again, whipping out his wand and quickly casting the Scouring Charm here and there then here and there again. Wheeee! There was no a sufficiently cleaner class. "There you go, Professor!'' Adi smiled broadly before trudging off.
....................

He had neatly set up his books and writing apparatus on his desk when AJ arrived. The girlfriend got a bright smile from him. "Hi back. Are you sleep walking?" Hehe. Adi knew so well mornings were not her thing but she looked so darn cute like that... all sleepy and what not.

The Hufflepuff turned at the sound of Benny's voice and waving back to Janelle in the process. "Hey, Benny,'' he said cheerily as though nothing had happened between them. "No, you can't.'' He kidded, he kidded! "I lied. You sure can.'' He needed the bestie to be secure again. Yes.
....................

Annnnnd cue the start of the lesson! MERLIN! Maths? Adi had had enough of that during his primary school years, thank you very much! He had thought he ran away from the dratted subject when he came to Hogwarts. Even though they did use it in Arithmancy, he preferred here because it wasn't as complicated.

Oh, wait.

Tanner was kidding? PHEW!

A relieved Adi took down the numbers from the board and began his work. Reduction method. This was something he knew well.
SPOILER!!: Adi's Work!

4 + 4 + 1 = 9

5 + 6 + 5 = 16 =1 + 6 = 7
1 + 0 + 0 = 1

9 + 9 + 7 + 1 = 26= 2 + 6 = 8

ALL DONE, YO!

OH THANK MERLIN they were going to be doing something else. Good one, Professor. Lux was much better at the good old reduction method. Arithmancy didn't get much simpler than that. The number on the board was rather long, but it was nothing she couldn't handle.

Opening her notebook, she began working on the problem:

Toby was back to squinting at those cobwebs again, ready to leap up out of his seat and throw himself over Sophie and Zander and off to safety should any spiders suddenly appear. All seemed to be fine so far, though, which was something.

Once the lesson started, Toby managed to drag his gaze away and look at Tanner instead. Okay, yes, time to find out how these two lessons were about to interconnect, yes?

Not muggle mathematics then, thank Merlin. Toby simply would not have survived a lesson that was purely maths, though he hadn't actually speculated that that might be the topic until Tanner herself said it was wrong. But yeah, anyway... reducing. That was the kind of maths Toby could do sometimes. He wrote the number (or was it four smaller numbers, he wondered? No, Toby, it was one number) down on his parchment, double-checked he wrote it right, then got to work.

SPOILER!!: Parchment
441,315,565,100

4 + 4 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 1 + 0 + 0 = 35
3 + 5 = 8
= 8

Toby checked through his answers again, knowing that this class was the one where he was most likely to make careless mistakes at all, but it was exactly the same the second time round. He went over the lines that made up the little '8' a couple more times, making the number stand out, bold and proud, before he looked up again with a suddenly curious expression. He raised his hand. "How come we're reducing this number, Professor? Is it just random, or...?" Just curious, y'know.

Um? Muggle mathematics? She should have guessed. Zhenya was even worse at muggle mathematics than she was at arithmancy. Her mother had really tried to force her to learn her times tables and algebra and fractions and decimals, but had ultimately given up. Zhenya was far too stubborn, saying she would never have to use it.

Apparently she was wrong.

And wrong again...

Zhenya breathed out a sigh of relief, bending her head down to the table for a few seconds. When she looked up, there were numbers on the board. Zhenya flipped through her textbook until she got to chapter three; they would be using reduction for the numbers. She could do that.

She unraveled a piece of parchment, and wrote Arithmancy/Muggle Studies on the top, then dipped her quill into the ink.

Janelle was relieved. No muggle mathe today. Yay! That was not exactly one of her favorite subjects when she was in muggle school. As a matter of fact, she was quite happy to escape it at Hogwarts. Arithmancy involved enough math for her, thank you.

And then......the reduction method. So that was what they would be starting with today. Janelle looked at the ginormous number that Professor Tanner wanted them to reduce. Yep. Enough math for her. There was no escaping it though and the second year set to work.

SPOILER!!: Janelle's work
441,315,565,100
4+4+1+3+1+5+5+6+5+1+0+0=35

With the first task completed, Janelle wondered where the professors were heading with this lesson. How was all of this going to tie into Muggle Studies? If it wasn't math, what was it? She guessed that she would just have to be patient and see when the time came. Unfortunately, patience was not her strong suit.

Those words coming from Tanner's mouth were amazing. NOT MUGGLE MATH!

...

Thank Circe, or he'd be in strife.

As it was though, reducing numbers was mathematical enough. Inking his quill and dating his parchment, Zeke copied down the number from the board and set about reducing it. He only looked up from his parchment when an older student said they didn't know what the method was. Could he help her? Should he help her?.... in the end it seemed as though Lux had it under control.

Focusing on his work, he completed the calculation and consulted chapter three to identify the number meaning.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Wait, so he should help?

Yoongi looked towards the Prefect who was already busy cleaning but the Professor also announced that class was about to begin so he stayed where he was. A bit of webs did not hurt anyone. He was one of the few people who let out a sigh of relief when she said that they were not going to do muggle mathematics. And then numbers appeared on the board and he already got a headache.

There was a reason why he took Muggle studies and not Arithmancy. Numbers hurt his head. He looked around him at the students getting busy calculating the number on the board. But…what was he supposed to do?

He tried taking a peek off of someone else parchment, but even if he could see it he still had no clue what he was supposed to be doing. Well…he guessed he should first write down the number and see from there.

Grunt... that was all Adi got out of her. She had done her fair share of talking before being fully awake, and now it was a process. No. No, no, no. She actually hadn't guessed that they were doing muggle math. That was the last thing on her mind even if it was the most obvious guess. AJ was debating on walking smooth out of the classroom. Would anybody notice if she crawled out the door?

Not muggle math. Thank the sweet baby unicorns. Crisis averted and her knees wouldn't have to get assaulted. There was math happening though. She couldn't really expect that not to happen, right?

This whole reduction thing wasn't so bad though. Hopefully this was as tricky as the math got because her brain wasn't fully awake at the moment. Trying her best to make her work legible, she began to scribble down the word problem on a spare piece of parchment.

Zander took out his materials while he waited for the rest of the class to fill up with people. All the while he kept stealing quick glances at Sophie Brown, who happened to look like she was having the best time of her life just sitting down waiting for class to start. The very thought was enough to make him chuckle. You'd think after they all sat together in Arithmancy a few times, the sparkle would ware off. Apparently not.

And not before long Professor Tanner started explaining-- well actually, that was the worst and most vague explanation Zander had ever heard in his entire life. Though, she probably wasn't trying to explain more than just presenting them with a task. But you know, still.

Anyways, he needed to get started.

Arithmancy being an elective course, Tiara knew there would be some here that were not familiar with what she was talking about. So she took special care to roam the room in search of those in need of assistance.

Oh. And looked like Eden was lost. "I can help you if you want." She was much better at Arithmancy now.

And Eden was her first customer, by the sound of it. "Coming, Miss McGee," she said from the opposite side of the room. It took her a while to wend her way over, given the close proximity of the desks. By the time she had arrived, someone had beaten her to the punch. "Yes, Miss Carrington.." Tiara scanned her work. "You are more than able to assist. Thank you for offering!" She turned to Eden. "You're in good hands, don't worry," she said with a smile. Then Tiara moved on to others, but of course she could come back if necessary.

Now what? She did say the word reduction right? So maybe he had to …reduce the number?
no that wasn’t right there were no minus numbers in the textbook. He tried again.

Nonono! That wasn’t it either. HOW was he going to survive this class?!

Here was the Gryffindor that had offered to help clean up, but she didn't know his name. Clearly he needed help, but that made sense because he didn't take the course. "It looks like you could use a crash course in our reduction method, Mister..?" Help a lady out with a name, here.

"PSSSSST." What was his name again? Was he the one with the accent or no? Ever since AJ had gotten the two boys mixed up in the great hall, she could never keep their names straight.

"I can help him out, professor." If you wanted help from AJ that was. Arithmancy was not a favorite subject for a reason. However, this reduction thing she could handle. If things got real the both of them would need a Ravenclaw to sit next to.

AJ peered at his work. "All you have to do it add all of the numbers up. With reduction you can't have more than a single digit for your final number. So, if once you added all of the numbers you got a 15... you would have to add those together and 6 would be your final answer." Make sense?

"Go on!" Give it a go. AJ would make sure he came to the correct answer before she completely left him.

Alright so technically speaking, Moxley hadn't exactly done well in Arithmancy when she was at Hogwarts. But now she was a grown woman with a grown woman's brain and being afraid of a little numbers lesson was silly, right? Which is why she'd agreed to do this class with Tiara. Strong, confident Gryffindor that she was, Meredith Moxley was ready to face this reduction method head-on! RAWR! And so she got up from her seat once the kiddos started working and walked around, checking work over shoulders. ...Or kind of checking, anyway.

"Right, yes. Addition. Add the things, well done!" Errr..yes! Moxley smiled down at AJ with a nod of approval. The younger Gryffindor seemed confident about her work so the Muggle Studies professor had no reason to doubt her.

Moving on, the brunette noticed that one of the badger boys had a paper filled with more scribbles than math and though she couldn't exactly blame him, she also knew she had to help or get someone else to help and she was going with the latter.

"Mr. Tinker! It's really a matter of spacing out the numbers and then adding 'em all up and then, y'know, reducing them!" See? Math wiz over here! WOOP! "But it'd be good practice for one of the other kids to help you, y'know, to learn how to do it so why don't you get Mr. Adair to assist you!" Surely Zander wouldn't refuse to help, heh. "Prefect Adair, over here!"

Zander was pretty confident in his work this time around. Y'know, after he got his OWL score and everything, Arithmancy seemed to get a whole ton easier. Weird, huh? Like Professor Tanner was just giving them easier work now or something. Of course it might have had something to do with his new found confidence in this class. Ahem. And of course now that he was done, he was just idly staring over at the front of the classroom, waiting for their next task when-- Huh?

He quickly turned as he heard his name being called out. Professor Moxley was probably trying to congratulate him on... Oh. Man. Looked like she was trying to get him to help a kid out. Which he didn't completely mind, but the desks were so cramped and he had to walk ALL THE WAY OVER THERE. But he had a point to prove when it came to Meredith Moxley. So Zander was coming, okay?

Ahem.

He quickly and not-so-swiftly got out of his desk, struggling to walk around the rest of the chairs and stuff on his way over to the Hufflepuff kid and his Muggle Studies Professor. "Uh, hi," he smiled at the Hufflepuff and uh oh. Man. He hardly had any work down. "Need some help?"

Numbers. Riiiiight. But y'know what? She wasn't going to let THOSE put a damper on this combination of classes because she said so, so there. Norah was also going to ignore the class that she didn't even like Arithmancy in the first place, but Professor Tanner was a cool cat which made everything okay. Right. Arithmancy? No problem.

She looked at the numbers on the board and immediately thought there was a problem. THAT number? But it was GINORMOUS. No. No Norah calm down, it was going to be okay, remember? Right. That meant smiles and stuff. The fourth year forced a grin (although it probably looked more like a grimace) as she wrote the number down on her parchment, followed by a happy face doodle just in case she forgot that this was going to br a happy lesson. Happy happy happy lesson. Ahem. Shifting her quill around in her fingers, she bent over her parchment and began to write....something. Something was better than nothing, anyways.

TA DA! She smiled more genuinely at her parchment this time, 'cause she'd done the entire thing by herself and that was probably a world record, and closed her textbook to show that she was finished. Or maybe because she didn't want to look at all the numbers anymore. Same difference.

Ian listened to the Muggle Studies professor and looked up with hopeful eyes. Perhaps the Professor understood this better than he. Alas, it was not to be as Moxley called the Gryffie Prefect over to help him. Ian wasn't ashamed, he just never cared all that much about the numbers. And just how was this huge number going to accomplish anything anyways.

Zander figured as much. That Ian needed help, not that he struggled his numbers. Though, those two things probably did go hand in hand considering they were dealing with Arithmancy here.... Ahem. Anyways. Zander actually COULD help with this subject. Lucky for the Hufflepuff, yes.

"I used to be horrid at this stuff.. But I learned a trick that made it loads easier, so there's still hope." He smiled at the boy, hoping to lighten up his mood a bit. The Gryffindor didn't even bother trying to grab a desk, instead he just kneeled by Ian's, letting his eyes skim the paper another time. Y'know, it probably would've been a better idea to bring his own calculations along. But unfortunately, that ship had sailed. His paper was far too difficult to reach at the moment since this room was like an obstacle course of piled up desks. ... Was he being too dramatic? Maybe.

"Okay so it looks like you've done everything right so far," he said looking up from the paper. "It's only real confusing looking 'cause the number's so complicated." How the heck was he supposed to explain addition??? Merlin, six years of school did not prepare him for this. "Maybe try to break down the addition into smaller chunks so you haven't got to do it all at once?" Yes that was his GRAND trick. Not really much of a scientific break through... But, y'know.

SPOILER!!: Parchment
441,315,565,100
4+4+1+3+1+5+5+6+5+1=
(4+4)+(1+3+1)+(5+5)+(6+5+1)=

"See how I grouped them off into smaller chunks?" That would make it tons easier, plus they were smaller numbers so the Hufflepuff could probably use his fingers to count. Shhh don't laugh. Everyone does it. Especially Zander Adair. But HEY he got an excellent score on his OWL so CLEARLY it was a good way of doing things, okay? Don't judge. "So for the first chunk that's 4+4, that equals eight," He scribbled down on the parchment. Hope Ian doesn't mind. Ahem. "See?" He nodded his head as if to tell the boy to work the rest out on his own. "Just make sure to write these smaller calculations on the side so that it doesn't confuse you for the actual reduction stuff." Because that would be bad.
SPOILER!!: Parchment with Zander's example thing
441,315,565,100
4+4+1+3+1+5+5+6+5+1=
(4+4)+(1+3+1)+(5+5)+(6+5+1)=
8+(1+3+1)+(5+5)+(6+5+1)=

He paused to let the Hufflepuff calculate a few for his own before adding, "then, once you've got all your little chunks calculated, you can add all of those up to get your grand total number and that'll answer the equation you had written before!" he pointed at the "4+4+1+3+1+5+5+6+5+1=" the Hufflepuff had written earlier. "I got 35 as my answer for that part," he whispered. Y'know, just so Ian could check to see if he was on the right track. "And once you get there the reduction is easy!" So uh, was it going to work? "Does that make any sense?" Was he following? 'Cause if not Zander could try to explain it some other way or something...

Ian watched as the boy kneeled down to be closer to the desk. Ian felt a little bad that a seventh year was having to help a sixth year boy do simple addition. It just didn't seem like he was getting where he needed to be with his own calculations. Zander was rather helpful. The breaking up of the numbers certainly did help him to add the numbers easier. Ian copied the equation the way Zander had.

SPOILER!!: parchment
441,315,565,100
4+4+1+3+1+5+5+6+5+1=

(4+4)+(1+3)+(1+5)+(5+6)+(5+1)
8 + 4 + 6 + 11 + 6
12 + 17 + 6
29 +6 = 35

Ian sighed a breath of relief. " I guess that I was just struggling to add those numbers as they were grouped in one long equation. I suppose my brain doesn't keep track of them as well as it should and so your help is greatly appreciated. As I remember it, the final result should be 8. I'm so sorry you had to waste your time helping me out. I'm sure that you must thinking I'm a blooming idiot who doesn't know how to add simple numbers." Ian was relieved, but also a bit embarrassed that he couldn't handle simple addition.

Kate completed the work the best way she knew how.

4 + 4 + 1 = 9
3 + 1 + 5 = 9

Sooo..., had she done the right thing? What was the tried and true method anyway?
So how were her budding arithmancers doing? Time to find out. First up was one of her own flock. "Well done, you even found the meaning."

Very spaced, this work was. But also very correct, so really it didn't matter much. "An accurate summary of the characteristics, Miss Brown," she commented.

A relieved Adi took down the numbers from the board and began his work. Reduction method. This was something he knew well.

Aditya had chosen to break up the number into smaller chunks, including reducing one of the smaller numbers before combining them together. "Interesting method, correct answer. I wonder if that will always work..? I would certainly have to look into that to prove it." These students were always stretching her. Whoever thought 'teachers teach and students learn' had definitely never taught before.

Upon hearing a question, Tanner turned to find the source of curiosity. Ah, she should have known! Smiling, she said, "Not random! But I'm not giving it away just yet!" she finished, giving the young man a small wink. She didn't want to discourage his curiosity.

With that exercise done, Zhenya put her quill back down and waited for further instructions.
"Mhm.. yes.." she muttered as she looked over Zhenya's parchment. "Excellent, you've earned yourself a short break!"

And then......the reduction method. So that was what they would be starting with today. Janelle looked at the ginormous number that Professor Tanner wanted them to reduce. Yep. Enough math for her. There was no escaping it though and the second year set to work.

With the first task completed, Janelle wondered where the professors were heading with this lesson. How was all of this going to tie into Muggle Studies? If it wasn't math, what was it? She guessed that she would just have to be patient and see when the time came. Unfortunately, patience was not her strong suit.
"Good work, Miss Guidry," Tiara said, looking over the girl's shoulder. "Just sit tight for a few moments until we're ready to move on."

What did Zeke Rogers have for her today? "Correct work, correct meaning. Hold on to that until we're ready to start doing something with it."

Boom. She was done, and slightly more awake from having to think.
Just by the look in AJ's eyes, she could automatically tell that the girl was tired. "Getting enough sleep, Miss Valentine?" she asked whilst looking over her work. "It does not appear to have impacted your work, thankfully. Get a nap in before lunch today is my suggestion."

Oh good, AJ was offering to help. She loved how willing the students were to help each other. That would make for productive citizenship later in life. "Yes please, Miss Valentine. Many thanks," she finished, inclining her head towards the girl.

Ian was rubbish at this arithmancy thing...and his parchment soon became covered with scribbles and scratches and all manner of marks, but not really the correct answer. He considered going closer to Adi. Adi was smart as a whip with this stuff.
Well, this Hufflepuff was definitely on to something. "You have the right idea, now you simply need to complete the calculation! Break it up into smaller chunks if it seems too large and overwhelming." Good advice for many tasks in life, actually.

And just how was this huge number going to accomplish anything anyways.

Ian watched as Zander made his way over and glanced at his parchment. At the question, Ian nodded. " Yeah, just a wee bit. I'm rubbish with this Arithmancy thing. It isn't exactly my strong suit. Of course my trouble with numbers may also be a reason I struggle in Potions.

Ian copied the equation the way Zander had.

And here came more assistance now. "Thank you, Professor Moxley and Prefect Adair. Extra students require extra assistants!" Good, that situation was taken care of, then. Time to focus on others.

TA DA! She smiled more genuinely at her parchment this time, 'cause she'd done the entire thing by herself and that was probably a world record, and closed her textbook to show that she was finished. Or maybe because she didn't want to look at all the numbers anymore. Same difference.
"Ah, yes. Well done, Miss Kittredge," she said approvingly. "You are really coming along in this subject quite nicely!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tiara took one last look out into the corridor. Not seeing anyone, she decided it was time to start the actual new material. "Back up front if you would, please." A few moments' pause was enough to allow her to speak again. "If you don't take Arithmancy, do not worry about the reducing, the others have helped you out." She flicked her wand at the board, making the work and answer appear, along with the textbook's meaning.
Now came the fun part. "This number, which reduces to 8, has several meanings, the most commonly used of which are authority, success, and material wealth. Here's a thought exercise for you: if this number were to represent a place, what type of place would you guess? Creative answers accepted!" she said enthusiastically.
OOC: Completely off the wall answers are fine! If you need to finish your calculations, that's also alright. We'll move on in 16-20 hours depending on when I get up in the morning.
No harm done.
Penelope wasn't entirely sure that she had explained the problem in a way that the professor would understand, but the professor had said that she could move a desk from the back row, so she would do that. "Thank you, professor." Penelope returned to the desk in the front row and gathered everything that she had left there. After choosing a desk in the back row she moved it backwards into the open space. That would be much more comfortable with out all the desks and other students around her. She wouldn't feel trapped by close together desks here. Penelope sat down fewling much more comfortable and got out parchment and a quill for taking notes.
Well, they had a lot to accomplish and no more time than usual to do it in, so they really should get a move on here. "Good morning, students!" she said brightly. "Welcome to Arithmancy class.. and Muggle Studies class!" she said, inclining her head towards Meredith. "I know we still have a few moments before the bell to begin class rings, but we have a lot to do today. Now, many of you will have guessed the topic for today's lesson to be muggle mathematics.." she began. After a slight hesitation, she finished with, "..but that would not be correct." Then Tiara paused for a few moments to let the sighs of relief she knew would come die down.
With a flick of her wand, a large number appeared on the board.
Extremely large, in fact. "Today for the Arithmancy portion we will be working mostly out of chapter three. So, first task as we wait for any last minute stragglers: please use the tried and true reduction method for this number." No need for her to explain why they were doing it just yet.. she'd let the suspense hang for juuuust a bit longer.
OOC: Class has officially begun, but if you need to wrap up a conversation at the beginning of your post that's totally fine!
Class was starting now. Penelope looked up at the board and saw the number that Professor Tanner had written. They had to use the reduction method on 441,315,565,100.
SPOILER!!: work
441,315,565,100
There. Her answer was 8. Penelope looked over her work to check for mistakes. She didn't see any obvious mistakes. It wasn't really difficult to use the reduction method on large numbers. You just had to break it down into smaller numbers.
