A bigger blush went over her and she giggled a bit, again with the giggle. "Observing me? I think you would be a bit bored, but if it gets me more time with you.... Observe away!" She touched his arm a bit wondering if he would mind. No he wouldn't would he? A new excitement went through her has he said he would love to go to lunch with her. See he did want to get to know her more.. This was good... not good great!

Where should they go, she didn't care as long as it meant being with him somewhere. She felt this little ping in her mind when her thoughts tried to go to someone else, but no.. It was Gavin.. Gavin was right here and he was just so cute and she really wanted to know more about him. Putting her hand in his she shrugged, "You pick... As long as I get to go with you I don't care where we eat."
None of those. He made a mental note of this, he'd record it when he got back. So far the negative side effects didn't seem to be happening--Oh? She thought his potion was a dud? "On the contrary," he corrected with a smirk, "it means it's working just fine." You think she'd be happy to know she wasn't running straight for St. Mungo's. Then again. His potions didn't typically fail. If they weren't meant to make you sick then they wouldn't. Was it possible for his smirk to get anymore conceited? Probably, because it just did. "I've never known a potion of mine to fail before so you could say that." Of course now he was working with others, there was a greater margin for error.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear, she was touching his hand. Sweet Circe. He blinked down at the blushing woman. This...this wasn't normal--or well it was, this was what the potion was meant to do...For a moment Gavin just stared unsure of whether or not there was something to be said at a time like this. "I...yes...more time with me." This should have made him all smug, someone desperate to spend time with him but goodness.

Ooookaaaaaaay, there was more contact. He. Needed. To. Speak. With. his. Department. Head. He gave her a nervous smile. Not completely sure about himself anymore. Focus Gavin! More compliments and such. Welp, he supposed he could get used to this..."I guess I have somewhere in mind, come with me." He'd be working during his lunch break, wouldn't he? Sigh.

Victoria laughed, "Oh I didn't mean because of the effects you asked me aren't there.. Heavens no.. I'm glad they aren't. I'm meaning because I haven't fallen madly in love with anyone yet." She continued to laugh and smile at him oblivious of an obvious thing. "Like I said though it has to work if you made it.. Unless one of your coworkers screwed it up." That would have to be the answer if it wasn't working. "During lunch maybe you could tell me more about some of your other potions. I would love to hear about things you have done." She was so wanting to hear more about him. His job seemed very interesting to her.

Noticing he didn't pull away from her hand, Victoria in twinned her fingers with his so they were truly holding hands. Squeezing it a bit she continued to smile as he said he had someone where in mind. "Well lead the way. Anywhere you pick would just be lovely." Of course it would be, because he picked it... "and don't forget it's my treat since I asked you to go." She was just excited he said he would go with her and that this was going so well. "So how is your sister with the camera? Taking lots of pictures I hope?" She remembered she took pictures, he had nieces as well if Vic was remembering correctly. Oh well she wanted to know everything about him, so if it wasn't nieces she would learn.

Walking through the atrium for the second time was a completely different experience than the first. The first time had been at the New Years Orientation and then everything had been all glamorous and everyone was in fancy gowns and suits. Not that the atrium now was... bad. It was just different. The atrium was still a rather beautiful place, in her opinion, even with the hustle and bustle of all the employees finding their way to their level.

January, however, was taking her time. She had arrived early for a reason and that was to give herself time to look around the place and find her way around if she happened to get lost.

But for now, she was intrigued by this statue that she hadn't paid much attention to the first time around. So she slowly began to circle it, admiring the craftsmanship.

So this is what happens when you sleep in the office. Your sister sends you two patronuses reminding you not to die buried with paperwork because it's lame. Your co-workers come early the next morning and announce how petty you look. You discover you forgot to eat. Your brain starts seeing words dancing instead of making sense.

That was Vic's state as he came down from his level and reached the fountain in the atrium, he needed food. He'd used the restroom to freshen up, so he hoped he didn't have bags under his eyes or sleepy crusts on the corner of his eyes. Specially that there was a lady circling the fountain and her hair indicated that her face must be pretty. He slowed down and waited for her to reach that position where she'd face him and the fountain, then he grinned and waved at her. "First time here?" She LOOKED like it. He'd recognize this hair if he'd seen it anywhere before, too. Look at all the redness. Was she at the orientation?

You know, this was actually quite a fascinating fountain. Fascinating and... slightly odd, considering the centaur joined the others in staring at the wizard and witch in awe. And that was odd because January had studied centaurs in her university days and they most definitely did not adore humans of any kind, wizard or not.

As January was making her way around the statue, she suddenly became aware of a figure in front of her and stopped suddenly. "Oh-" She was about to apologize, but he grinned and waved... as if... Was he watching her?

"Hello," she said, tucking a strand of red hair behind her ear, feeling a bit of heat rise into her cheeks. She laughed lightly and glanced at the statue again. "Is it that obvious?" Yes, it was her first day and she was just... admiring statues.

"I'm January," she said, extending her hand forward with a smile. No better way to start than by meeting new people, right?

Vic chuckled at her nervous reaction, the shade of pink on her cheeks complimenting the color of her hair. "The fountain-ogling will fade with time. It did with me." He took her hand and raised his eyebrows at her name, "Like, the month?" She wasn't easily offended, was she? "Ludovicus. I usually dare people to say it quickly five times to ensure they pronounce it right." Hahhh, nope, he didn't. Oh Merlin, he needed coffee and stop fooling around like a kid. "Vic for short."

He held on to his notepad with one arm and stuck the other hand in his pocket. "An early worker. You must be really excited about work. Or the fountain." He had an easy grin on his face.

She was sure much of the first-day-awe would fade soon. "It's just a rather... curious statue," she said with one more glance to the uncharacteristic centaur. Oh well.

January laughed lightly as they shook hands. "Yes, like the month. Though, strangely enough, I was born in June." Her mother had insisted on this name, for some reason. Ludovicus? That was a mouthful. January repeated it in her head and laughed again. "I think I'll just stick with Vic. Pleasure to meet you." Hey, 'stick with Vic'. That rhymed.

Excited about work? Weellll... yeah, she was. She'd been cooped up in her little house a little too long. January adjusted the purse on her arm and smiled. She liked Vic's easy sense of humor. "I am excited for work. I also thought I'd get here a bit early in case I get lost, or... kidnapped by a rogue mutant..." And she hoped to Merlin he knew that she was talking about the mutant things that set fire to a lab in the ministry. January had read about them in the Daily Prophet a while back, so hopefully it hadn't lied and made her look insane.

Vic spared the statue another glance, it wasn't that interesting to him. "If you say so. Have you found any funny cracks or unusual glamour while you were inspecting it?" Because that was what she seemed to be doing, though he was only half-serious.

He got her birthday before her number, he grinned, "I was born in November." It was only polite to share his own, too. He wasn't one of those paranoid Auror people, prosecutors weren't supposed to be paranoid, just observant and open-minded. And convincing, which came naturally to Vic luckily. So, sharing birthday months within the first hour of meeting someone was totally okay in his book. But aww, she wouldn't try out his full name? He nodded, "We'll work on it." Pause. "Why did your family name you January?" Probably they did not name her after the month itself.

... huh. Someone did their homework before applying for work. Ahem. Well, this was embarrassing. He hoped she hadn't heard about the time-thief escaping the trial with her attorney as well, it put their security in jeopardy. "Oh. Uhh... well, I can't blame you." Her hair stood out in this gloomy place in a very attractingive way. "But don't worry about it, rogue mutants are on Fridays." Okay, bad joke again. He chuckled and waved his lame words dismissively. "I think I can help with the getting lost issue. I've been here a year and a month, I know this place by heart now." He could be her escort!!!

Well, since he asked... heh. "Yes, actually. The centaur is particularly curious. You see, centaurs view themselves as the most superior creature... in all existence, probably. So it's strange that he is depicted here admiring the wizard like everyone else. Centaur's wouldn't do that." January looked back at Vic again. She was nerding out again. Oops.

"And you have a normal name. Well... fairly normal." January laughed lightly. She was teasing, of course, even if he was the first person named Ludovicus that she'd ever met. But sure, they could work on it. She'd practice saying it in her spare time. "Oh, that is the question of the century. My mum just really liked it, I guess. Winter was her favorite season, so that could have had something to do with it." January shrugged her shoulders lightly. It was just one of those things she'd never know.

Oh, the mutants were only on Fridays. January laughed again. "Well, that's reassuring." She'd have to bust out her protective gear. "And what department do you work for?" she asked. Obviously Vic wasn't new like her, since he claimed to know the whole place by heart. January raised her eyebrows slightly... "Are you offering?" Alysson was supposedly giving her and William a tour, but... Well, since she was already here and so was Vic, it only seemed logical. He seemed quite nice, anyhow.

... blink. Blink. Grin. "Former Ravenclaw or work in the Magical Creatures department?" That wasn't the kind of muse any woman would give unless she was one of the two. Or a very unusual lady. But Vic was almost sure there wasn't many unusual ladies out there, he'd put his boss lady in that category and almost no one else with her.

Was that sarcasm? His grin was accompanied with a shrug. "Family name. So long you don't call me Ludo, we can be friends." His siblings called him Ludo constantly, specially after they knew how much he disliked that nickname. He was a grownup man, now, though and so he wouldn't be that upset about it if she did.... just not gonna be her friend, this wasn't childish at all.

January because mum loved winter. Yep, it made sense. "You better not go to Australia then, you can't explain that to them." Maybe make up a new explanation for the lower half of the globe? Vic pondered that for a moment before letting it go. What department? Oh. Hmm. "I'm a prosecutor, the ministry prosecutor at your service." He had a cheesy line for that but he bit it back. The woman was nice, no need to scare her away or something.

Was he offering? Vic raised his eyebrows and hands in a way that said it was obvious he was. "Sure. I can show you to your work, I'd hate for an early riser to get to work late." He had an assigned escort and tour person last year, didn't they do that anymore? Hmm.

For a brief moment, January thought Vic was referring to the centaur as a former Ravenclaw, but then she realized she had definitely nerded out and he was talking about her. The realization and the fact of the matter made her laugh. "Both, actually," she said, running a hand through her hair. Was she crazy for analyzing a statue? Probably.

Well, that depended on whether or not January wanted to be his friend. Heh. Vic was nice and handsome friendly, so yes, she did. "I solemnly swear," she said, raising her right hand teasingly. She liked Vic better anyway.

True. Australians would not understand. "Luckily I have not had that problem yet." Ohhh, ministry prosecutor, eh? That was a pretty big job. January raised her eyebrows and nodded. "Impressive," she said, clearly so. "... I heard about the de Talone case," she said as a side comment. You know. That was... crazy. "Any clue where she's gone?" Was he even allowed to talk about it? Would he get mad about her asking? Heh. Too late.

Aw, he was offering to show her to her work? January smiled. "Well, how can I refuse?" Such a gentleman, he was.

Though absent of it's decorative splendour, the space was nonetheless something to be taken in. Jasper had gravitated towards the center of the corridor which placed him at the Fountain of Magical Brethren. A perfect position from which he could both appreciate and familiarize himself with his new surroundings. The older wizard reached into his pocket and pulled out a coin.

Plunk.

The little bronze coin broke the surface of the water in the fountain's basin and Jasper watched as it sank to the bottom. There hadn't been a sign posted that they weren't to drop coins in, but there seemed a shocking lack of wishes at the bottom of this fountain, which Jasper rather optimistically took to mean a sign of satisfied workers. The superstitious wizard tossed another coin in for luck. Just in case.

Please, Merlin. Do not let anything go wrong today.

Noticing a couple nearby...flirting, made him think of Syndil. He really should sent her an owl. You know, just to prove he could. And it would only have taken him eleven years, well going on twelve now that they were in a new year. A new year, a new job, and a fresh start. Jasper looked down at the basin and his expression, which had been one of serene optimism quickly faded into a serene disappointment as he realized that the lack of coins had meant they'd only just cleaned the bottom of the basin as everyone was just now returning from the break. Ha. Ha.

She was a Ravenclaw, too!!!!11!!!1! Vic kept a very calm and mature look, and tried to remember seeing someone with a fiery hair like that back in school. It was impossible to remember, of course. Well, he would've remembered from her unique name anyway. He wanted to ask from which class, but he thought it was too soon. He didn't have to make a list of all the Ravenclaws just yet...

He gave her a wicked grin when she "solemnly swore". "I don't forget a thing, so..." Juuust saying. Did that sound scary at all? He assumed whatever he did today, he could blame the lack of sleep and his workaholic nature for. It worked many times before.

Naw, that 'Impressive' got him to scratch the back of his neck nervously. De Talone, ugh. He heaved a sigh. "We're working on it. It's actually the reason why I look like this, this morning." He gave a short laugh, "I just tend to forget... sleep when I'm into something." And he'd rather not talk about the case, of course. He wasn't one of the paranoid MLErs but he also was secretive of his cases. Before he could give her a concluding answer, anyway, he saw a man by the fountain staring down in the water. Did he just drop something? The surface looked troubled.

... another grin graced his mouth. "To Magical Creatures then!" He extended his arm for her casually and just like a gentleman. His eyes went back to the man momentarily to see if he needed help retrieving the thing he dropped....?

Oho, he didn't forget a thing. January put on a 'yikes' sort of face, but assumed he was just being silly. "I will keep that in mind." At least, she certainly hoped he wasn't implying anything there. Heh.

January slightly regretted bringing up the case. He didn't seem so pleased, and understandably so. For a moment though, she didn't understand what that had to do with his appearance. She tilted her head slightly until a possible realization popped into her head. Forget sleep? "Don't tell me you've been here all night," she said, raising an eyebrow. That would be... incredible dedication.

Yes, to Magical Creatures! January laughed lightly when he extended his arm. For her? "What a gentleman," she said, slightly teasing. Well, might as well. She took his arm (it would be rude to deny) and was ready to go, but she noticed him looking back at the fountain. January followed his gaze to see a man looking into the water. She glanced back at Vic. "Did he drop something...?" Were they just gonna watch?

You know that feeling you get when you know you're being watched?

Jasper didn't have it. He was obliviously watching the surface of the water recover from the diminutive wake caused by the coin. He might have also been scrying. Testing the tiny little wavelets for signs of trouble up ahead. He was just beginning to make out shapes when he heard a witch's voice pull him out of his incognizant state. Her words piercingly clear for the connection between his actions and the use of the word 'drop'.

When Jasper looked away from the fountain's basin he saw that the flirting couple had been looking at him. For how long? Should he have been there? It was far too early for him to have ...done his spooky thing. Besides, he'd felt none of the symptoms that his fragile mind and body often associated with such fits.

"No." There came Jasper's short, but meant-to-be-reassuring answer as he returned the couple's acknowledgement. "Well sort of. I'm sorry, do people not toss coins into the fountain?" Perhaps there was supposed to be a sign? He had a timid way of speaking, the man did. Almost as though he were certain of nothing he said. It could've made him sound like a liar, only the statements he made using this tone did not exactly warrant a fib.

Oh. She wasn't impressed he didn't forget a thing, oh boo. Vic's grin stayed there as she made a face, though. It was funny, and if they were closer friends, he would've reacted differently. This being the case, he just grinned at her.

.... "I didn't stay here all night." He replied automatically, pulling off a mellow face, though his tone definitely indicated otherwise. "I'm coming to the conclusion that you've never tried sleeping in your office? Actually..." Vic clicked his tongue, "... your department isn't the ideal place to doze off." What with all the creatures in there, dangerous, mutants, cute but drooly, pretty but hair-pulling.

Their interaction was eventually brought to the man at the fountain. Vic didn't get the chance to reply to Jan (he'll think of a better nickname later) because the man did so. "Er.. I've never seen people do it. Do people still believe in those..." Superstitions. "... stories?" Throwing a coin in a body of water for wish-granting, or blessings or whatever. Vic turned to look at the lady holding his arm, did she do that too? Or did the Centaur take all her attention earlier?

Pff. As if she believed him now. January just laughed and shook her head. "You are one dedicated employee." She wouldn't dare fall asleep at work, especially after hours. Most of the creatures were contained in a locked room, but still. With animal lovers and tree huggers on the same level, anything could happen. "Exactly," she responded. "I don't fancy waking up to finding my shoes gone. Or my hair." It had taken a long time to grow out, you know.

Back to the man at the fountain. She was the wrong person to ask, since it was her first day. She didn't know if this fountain was one people often tossed coins into. She didn't. "I don't know," she replied to Vic and the other man. "I don't." Just in case he was wondering. She didn't believe in that kind of superstition of fountains and wishing wells and things of the like.

The coin-toss wizard looked suddenly eager as if he mind were flooding with too many ideas to get out at once. But the expression eased as he spoke.

"Stories? Oh, no they're not stories. Well, I mean they are, but only the motivational half. See, what I think is really happening is people are witnessing the power of positive thought." Jasper just loved talking metaphysical. He really had no idea that he was talking to the hard-boiled Ludovicus Bones. The hopeful smile he wore seemed to imply that very lack of knowledge as he planned to discuss thoughts, the powers of the mind, and where we go after we die as much as he would be allowed.

"I'm Jasper, by the way. Jasper Mitterbill." He said introducing himself to both the witch and the wizard and stopping short of disclosing exactly where he worked. They weren't meant to discuss it and Jasper understood why. People were often very curious, himself included and he could remember a time or six where that curiosity had landed him in harm's way. He knew consciously - and he also thought he knew subconsciously - that he would not be able to live with himself if he were ever responsible for the harm of another living being. It was important to keep hush.

"Oh?" He said in response to the ginger witch sounding a bit, well maybe it was sad for her. "Never? Not even as a young witch?"

Vic, for some reason, felt responsible for the lady's safety. He held on to her arm on his, and agreed to chat on with the man tossing coins and speaking about spiritual dung matters. It seemed that Jan agreed with him, that was just a bonus to the red hair and fair look. He tried not to stare admirably at her and ignore the man. "Right. If you think so. I know that tossing coins isn't a felony, I know that much so it's fine." Unless they were charmed coins.

... hmm. Did the man just look a bit shifty to January now, too? Vic kept this polite look on his face but he didn't stop his trained mind from racing through the worst of possibilities. Maybe he should get a squad to search the fountain once he was back.

"Ludovicus Bones." He didn't want January to share her name with the man before they were sure he was an employee in the ministry and not some rogue... or a foreigner with mystical quest. So he spoke quickly before she had a chance to speak up and share any more information. Hopefully she wouldn't take that as an oppressing move, it was all for her safety.

Anyway. "We're employees here, we were heading to work. Would you like to join us?" Trick question right there.

Ohhh... He was one of those people.

That was the thought that popped into January's head and she immediately felt bad for thinking it. She enjoyed a debate of logic and solid facts, not the 'power of positive thought' and all that. He sort of reminded her of her department head that she had met at the Orientation. That sounded like something she would say while munching on carrots and hummus. "Interesting," she remarked. "So... basically, you think that because people believe in this sort of thing and they expect something good to happen... it will?" It seemed a bit far-fetched for her Ravenclaw brain, but if he wanted to believe in luck she wasn't going to stop him.

Vic beat her to introductions, so she waited until he finished to do her own. "I'm January Pennifold. Level Four." She smiled kindly at the man before realizing that her arm was still linked with Vic's. Did that look weird? They weren't together. Like... together together, he was just going to show her around. Erm... oh well. She didn't need to explain. January kept her arm where it was.

She was almost perplexed at Jasper's question. Well, not so much the question as his tone. He sounded like he felt sorry for her or something. January shrugged her shoulders lightly. "No, not even then." She supposed she just didn't believe in that sort of thing. It never really crossed her mind, either, that she should toss a coin into every fountain she passed.

Oh, yes, they were going to work. See, this is why she came early. Just in case she got talking to someone. January was unaware of Vic's thought processes and assumed he was just being friendly. "Yeah, we're heading up. Where are you off to?"

"You know, I would. I could do for a bit of company before I begin my shift." It would be mostly solitary work and for the most part, Jasper spent the larger half of his days on his own. Not so much as a goldfish as per the lease on his Hackney apartment.

"It's nice to meet you, Ludovicus Bones." He said to the wizard who had said his name so quickly that it gave Jasper the distinct impression that he too wanted to get on with introductions to make way for interesting conversation. "Funny that. You share a name with that of the prosec..." How embarrassing. How utterly, completely and humiliatingly embarrassing that he just now realized to whom he was speaking. The older wizard's mouth hung open for a minute as he struggled to find a word that would fit inside of it. Nothing. Not even, Nice job! or Go Get 'em, Tiger! leapt to the forefront ridiculous as they would've sounded just then.

Bones could've been a celebrity within the magical community for all Jasper knew. What was important to the salt 'n peppered Unspeakable was that he, Bones, was seeing to justice for de Talone's victims. That witch was very scary to Jasper. But not for her abilities so much as for her will. What wouldn't she do? It was an unknown and that made her frightening.

Ah, the witch spoke. His mouth softly shut and he addressed Miss Pennifold's question absent an argumentative tone. Rather he felt more forthcoming and pleased to be forthcoming. One never gets to the heart of a debate with dodginess, right? "Yes, I do and it's nice to meet you as well, Miss January Pennifold." Who was obviously with Ludovicus Bones judging by the way their arms remained linked since he'd laid eyes on them, yes? "And do you mean that you don't believe such things can occur?" He asked the red-head with genuine interest. "I'm heading to level 9, by the way."

Vic want to headsmack himself right there, right then. Miss January Pennifold apparently did not get the hint. Instead of succumbing to dramatics, though, he merely looked down at her as she introduced herself warmly to the strange man with coin-tossing fetishes. Not only her name but her level as well??? Welp. Fine. Whatever. If she wanted to put herself in harm's way, he couldn't enforce cautious on someone he just met. Hmph. He completely forgot about their linked arms by now, holding on to it naturally and casually. Like he did with Lucie when she was cold and invaded his personal space for some warmth.

But all was good when the man seemed to know that Vic had affiliations with the law. Vic couldn't help but preen a little, he had a pretty red hair by his side afterall, but all in good nature and intention. He gave the man a smirk. "Nice to meet you too, Mr. Mitterbill."

He let them talk a bit about that superstitious matters. It bore him a bit, he passed a hand through his hair and scratched his neck while he was at it before relaxing just a little hearing the man was an employee as well. "Level nine. Oooh." That was the mysterious department, Vic's eyes shone with curiosity. There was no need for him to mention his department, the man seemed to already know what he did. "You can join us, yes." He didn't mention that Ms. Pennifold was new here and tended to get lost a lot, it wasn't wise. Vic turned to her and tried telling her with his eyes not to bring it up, which just made him look weird and not in the least bit communicative.

This man apparently knew who Vic was even though they apparently hadn't met before. That made January curious and she looked up at Vic for a moment. Was he famous? And she didn't know? That could have been slightly embarrassing. And she was on his arm so naturally and ordinarily. Heheh. Oh weeell.

Ah, so he did believe in such things. Interesting, she thought to herself again. She supposed it was just something her brain didn't work well with. "I mean, 'things' may occur, whatever they may be, but I wouldn't attribute it to luck or a coin toss. It's just coincidence in my mind." Her tone was pleasant and was in no way trying to tell the man he was wrong. Just a difference in opinion and entirely harmless. It was an interesting topic, she supposed.

January said "Oooh," at the same time as Vic and laughed to herself. Department of Mysteries. How mysterious. Her curiosity about that level only grew by the day. "Well, you are welcome to join us." She just started to turn when she saw Vic looking at her... quite strangely. She wasn't daft, you know. She knew he was trying to tell her something with whatever that look was, but she didn't know what and made that apparent in the look she gave back to him, trying not to let the other man see. Did he not like this Mitterbill man already? Erm?

He hadn't gotten to finish his sentence, but no matter. The smirk on Mr. Bones' face seemed to imply to Jasper that Mr. Bones knew where he was going with it. He had every reason to be proud, Jasper thought.

Miss Pennifold wasn't totally closed minded. She at least understood that things, possibly very odd things, could happen even if it wasn't for the same reason. And it was more enticing, he thought, than someone who might've never even considered why or how. She was steps ahead of his brother and possibly hadn't even been privvy to the things Alphonse had seen.

Did they just? D'awwww! Jasper thought they must have been together for long to have had the same reaction at the same time to something he'd said. He wondered if they ever finished one another's sentences and how long, on average it took before couples did that. The couple also seemed to have a glance exchange going on. The man from level 9 opened his mouth and drew in a breath before speaking, "Actually, I might have to take a rain check on that. I just remembered...I owe my friend a cup of coffee. I'd better just wait for her here."

This small creature was out of breath. It puffed, and wheeeeezed as it stumbled across the Atrium, taking salvation in the shade of s statue after escaping from the dreaded humans.

They were everywhere. The place was teeming with them. But it's wriggly little nose had led it here, to this very spot, where there was WATER!

SQQQQUUUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Before it could help itself, the creature dived into its shallow depths and bathed in its goodness, lapping it off its whiskers as it went.
