The rest of the week wasn’t much eventful, everyone was preparing for the arrivals, and it was hard to not cross groups of giggling girls and plenty of invitations to the ball, but I’d made up my mind.

I’d decided to go with Adrianna, girls didn’t get much better than her in looks, and she wouldn’t be clingy all night, which was another thing. She was alright to be around, too.

James’ mind was still set, and I didn’t get it. But the thing that I didn’t understand, more then James, was Remus. I’d never actually seen him with a girl before, but surely he wanted to go to the ball with one, didn’t he?

The thing that I didn’t understand happened as we were walking outside, over to the lake. A girl walked up to us, looing particularly at Remus, a blush on her face, she was clearly embarrassed.

“Hello, R-Remus.” She said, looking down. None of us had ever seen her before, either. “Do you want to go, the ball?”

Remus looked at her, his face apologetic. “I’m very sorry, I can’t. I wish I could say yes.” I didn’t know if that was him being polite and a nice person, or if it was truth.

She nodded, turning away and walking back to a friend; I felt a little bad for her. Most of the girls that I’d rejected usually stormed off, so I didn’t feel too bad for them.

That only happened once, so it wasn’t like he was getting heaps of girls wanting to go with him. “What was that about?” I asked.

“What do you mean?” Remus asked, and for once he really didn’t seem to know. How... Unusual. It was certainly strange.

“Why did you say no?” James asked, also looking at Remus. “She was pretty.”

“She was, indeed. It’s a shame I had to decline her.” There was really no getting answers out of Remus. He didn’t seem to get it. Yet usually he was so smart.

I rolled my eyes, looking at James who shrugged.

“What about you James? How about a back up plan, in case Lily doesn’t ask you, maybe she’s too proud.” But I knew if it was that reason, it was her pride of disliking James, nothing else.

“Pfft, a back-up plan.” James was as confident as ever.
