CHAPTER SEVEN

The Calm Before the Storm

Tom was very grumpy in his tuxedo the morning of the wedding. This was going to put a serious cramp in his courting that gorgeous new cat next door. How could Ginger form a profound opinion of him in this contraption?

Ginger was one of the reasons he didn’t mind being here without Lily. He had been taking his time showing off for her, strutting about the place with a haughty air about him. All was for not now, he was quite peeved about the whole situation, and that will be that about Tom and his plight with the cat next door.

It didn’t help his disposition this morning thinking of Lily left out in the cold, about the wedding. Petunia didn’t even tell her there was going to be a wedding. The last she knew was that Petunia was going to call Vernon and accept his proposal.

This’ll devastate Lily. She would have wanted to share in Petunias wedding paradise, by helping her arrange it. Although Tom was saddened Petunia did this to Lily, he was still very happy for Petunia, and wanted only the best for her.

The reception was fit for royalty, and enjoyed by all. There was roast lamb croissants, candied yams, sweet beets, fresh broccoli florets, and cauliflower, different cultures of cheese, and exotic fruits. There were also all sorts of salads, dips and crackers. The drinks were all you would expect to find at a large social event and the wedding cake was massive in size and a site of elegance and beauty to behold.

Adorning every table was beautiful fresh cut flowers, some having to be imported. In addition, there were dishes of after dinner mints and mixed nuts on the table every four feet.

Photographers roamed the reception looking and watching for candid video clips, like Tom giving Ripper (who is tied to a post near by) two large croissants, and indiscriminant shots, of Petunia holding a Lily to her face with eyes closed, and a solitary tear about to roll down her cheek, as if living in a memory. In addition, irreverent shots, such as Marge taking a croissant from Vernon’s plate, while he is busy stealing a kiss from Petunia.

People continued eating and visiting while Petunia and Vernon opened their extravagant gifts bought for them. It was an event of the year to be sure, and it all went on without a hitch. Eventually, they managed to open and fondle all the lavish gifts.

Movers packed all the gifts and transported them to Vernon and Petunia’s new home. The newly weds bid adieu, and thanked everyone for their attendance and gifts, then left. Everyone thought it was to start their honeymoon, but it was so they could be back at Petunia’s old home to wait for Lily to come home from school.

Petunia sent a car and driver to King’s Cross to get Lily and bring her home. Lily expecting to have to hale a Cab, seen a driver holding a sign that said, “Lily Evans”, on it.

“Oh! She doesn’t hate me anymore!” she exclaimed in a jubilant voice. She grabbed the person next to her then hugged and kissed him.

“I’m so happy!” she announced to him, with a smile from ear to ear, and tears of joy streaming down her cheeks.

“I’m loved and I have a home.” The man smiled and patted her on the back around her waist.

“That’s nice honey,” he said innocently.

However, the woman on the other side of him glared at each of them in turn, then jerked the man away from Lily, and told her, "I don’t care how happy you are, get your own man, this one is taken!"

She turned from Lily (who was not paying any attention to her) to the man and said even more reproachfully, “I’ll deal with you later, husband - after we GET MOTHER FROM THE TRAIN!” she shouted.

Lily was so excited she didn’t even notice the commotion and the stares. She took up her potted rose plants and the driver took her trunk, and they proceeded to the car.

Knots tied up her stomach, the whole trip to King’s Cross from Hogwarts. James had tried to relax her by telling her everything would be okay. He would stay close by and if things didn’t look good then he would go with her to give Petunia her gift of love, and pick up Tom, the cat.

James followed her and seen that apparently all was well, so he kissed her good-bye and said he would drop in after an hour or so. After him and Petunia’s introduction, they would tell her of their plans to be married.

James gave Lily an hour and a half to visit and explain how to take care of the roses, and how they would bloom. When he disapparated to her house he stepped out from behind the bushes to find Lily sitting on the steps of the front porch, holding Tom on her lap.

“Oh,” she said non-plussed, but with a weak smile, she stood up and said, “Here you are. James, meet Tom. Tom, this is James. Let’s go inside.”

“Oh, ok,” he said reaching out to scratch Tom behind the ears and leaning in to smooch Lily quickly, but Lily had turned and started inside. James shrugged his shoulders and affixed an immensely charming smile on his handsome face, and looked around for Petunia.

The house looked deserted. It was immaculate, but it sure didn’t look like anyone lived here. “Um,” he started to say, but didn’t know what to say. “Um, looking around, where’s Petunia?”

“They left about an hour and twenty minutes ago.”

“Aw, er, well then,” A long pause ensued, more looking around, and a glance at Tom, who watched him intently.

“Honey,” he said cautiously as though the mere utterance of his voice would cause havoc to an unstable environment. “I can’t help but notice that something seems to be amiss here. Did she love your gift of love? I mean I’m sure she did, it’s incredibly brilliant, and all.”

Staring into her eyes, waves hand before her eyes watching for any reaction. Though a candle burns in her house, there’s nobody home. The weak smile on her face didn’t seem natural.

James put his face inches from her face earnestly trying to read some sort of anything going on. She spoke suddenly saying, “She took the rose plant.”

“Jeepers Lil! Honey you scared me, what’s going on?” Back to the blank stare. Suddenly he realized something.

“Someone has put a spell on you. Severus! Are you here?” James pulled out his wand and stood in front of her, looking around. He raised his wand and said, “Home Revelionum” Nothing.

Looking directly at Tom he stated urgently, “Tom, please - I know - even though Lily didn’t tell me that you are a werecat. I know of your kind and respect you and your magic. I don't have any desire to own or trap you. Please search my mind, search my heart and find out what you need to so you can trust me. I love Lily and I intend on, rather we both plan to get married. I ask that you continue to live with us as part of our family after we’re married. Do you trust me? Tom, please tell me what’s happened here!"
