Chapter 26

The next day was Defense against the Dark Arts first thing in the morning. When Harry and Ron walked in, they saw that the desks were already pushed to the side of the room. Professor Kahne was flipping his wand with his fingers, absentmindedly, watching every one of his students enter. When everyone was standing among the room, he walked to the middle of the floor and grabbed everybody’s attention.

“We are going to continue working on Occlumency today. Anybody want to go first?” Professor Kahne said putting on his trademark smile.

Hermione stepped forward first this time. She pulled out her wand and gave him a determined look.

“Ms. Granger, I assume you actually practiced like I said.” He said. Some of the kids around Harry shifted uncomfortably. Harry knew they hadn’t practiced either.

“On 3. 1…2…3. Legilimens!” Hermione shut her eyes tight and a deep cconcentration crossed her face. After about six minutes her eyes flashed open and a smile erupted over her face.

“Very good Ms. Granger. Fifteen points to Gryffindor. You didn’t completely shove me out of your mind, but there certainly was a wall. That is a great improvement.” Professor Kahne said pride was emitting from Hermione as he turned to the class again.

“Any more takers?” he asked. When nobody stepped forward the smile returned to his face. “Nobody? Ok, well we are going to do it my way then. Everybody form a line; make sure there is space between you and the person next to you. We are going to practice, surprise attack. When somebody uses Legilimency on you, they are not going to tell you when. So we are going to practice that. I’m going to use Legilimency on one of you at a time, but I’m not going to tell you who. So all of you need to be ready. So we are going to start…now, Legilimens!

A girl at the end of the line squeaked as she tried to block him from her mind. After about nine minutes, Professor Kahne lifted his wand and the girl peaked open her eyes.

“You need to concentrate less. You kept on thinking over and over again “to get out”, but by doing that it only let me stay longer. Strong emotion only makes it easier for the attacker.” He said to her. The girl bit her lip, but nodded.

“Ok, I may or may not go on her again. So always be alert. Oh, and Ms. Truitt, if I see that you were cheating in your potions class again, I will have to give you detention.” The girl was blushing beat red now.

Professor Kahne did legilimency for the rest of the period on random people. He was so random, he did it three times on a one kid, just to keep him on his toes. Harry was just thinking how lucky he was, because he hadn’t gone all period, when he suddenly felt somebody in his head. Harry looked up and saw that Professor Kahne was concentrating on him.

Harry shut his eyes and tried to make his mind blank. But the more he tried, the more Ginny would float to his head. He was in the forest and an angelic glow was coming from the shadowy floor. The unicorn was dead and he wasn’t the only one there…He was in the Chamber of Secrets and Ginny was laying on its flooded floor… “No not Ginny.” Harry thought. If Ginny went through his head, he’d never throw Professor Kahne off. The images were coming faster now. He was being attacked by the Whomping Willow and he heard Hermione scream…He was in the grave yard and “Avada Kedavra” was ringing through his ears..He was in the Department of Mysteries. Bellatrix was laughing in her sinister way and said she would perhaps torture Ginny until he handed over the prophecy. Harry immediately stepped in front of her before she get her hands on her. “No not Ginny! Stay out of those memories.” Harry thought desperately. He was still in the Department of Mysteries, but this time he was watching his godfather fall through the veil. Dumbledore was falling off the ledge to his death. Ginny had tears running down her pink cheeks.

“Stop!” somebody yelled next to him and Professor Kahne left his mind. After a minute or two he realized he was on his knees, panting. He looked up and saw Hermione kneeling down next to him. Ron was standing behind her looking down at him with a worried expression.

“Harry, are you ok?” Hermione asked him. Harry nodded, bringing a shaky hand to his face. He put it down quickly, not wanting them to see that he was trembling. Looking around, he saw everybody watching him. Why was it always him that couldn’t handle simple lessons like this?

When the bell rung, Ron and Hermione helped him to his feet. He was glad class was over and was ready to leave, when Professor Kahne stopped him.

“Harry can I speak with you for a moment?” Harry just wanted to go, but he knew he couldn’t just disobey a teacher’s request. He looked to the other two and nodded. They both gave Harry a reassuring smile and left, leaving him and Professor Kahne alone.

“That was an interesting lesson. Do you know why?” he asked. It was asked like a regular question in class. He didn’t sound mad, more curious.

“Err-“ Harry mumbled.

“I think it was an interesting that you have become worse than the last time I have seen you. I know nobody practiced for homework, except maybe your friend Ms. Granger, but you were able to push me from your mind last lesson. Maybe not all the way, but it was a start. But now you let me go so deep I was able to see everything you saw clearly.” He said calmly.

Harry didn’t know what to say. He looked down at his shoes, ashamed. He knew why he was doing worse than last class. A lot more was on his mind. Especially, what he had ran into last night.

“This red head-“

“Ginny. Her name is Ginny.” Harry said agitatedly. It was really starting to get on his nerves when people called her that.

“Ginny. She was really on your mind today. If somebody were to raid your mind, they would know she is your weakness. I’m not saying she is in grave danger, but seeing as who you are…” Professor Kahne paused and Harry looked up at him. He was watching Harry curiously.

“You really need to learn Occlumency. Not only for the sake of you, but your friends also. You may go now.” He said and began toward his desk.

“Uh, Professor?” Harry said slowly.

“Hmm?” He said, turning back.

“How…how do I get rid of…certain things from my mind? Because I…”

Professor Kahne chuckled. “If you didn’t have this girl in your head, you would have been as good, if not better, as you were last lesson.” Harry nodded at him.

“Well, what you need to do is think positive. When I was in your head, there was a lot of negativity. Positive always cancels out a negative and vice versa. If you can’t get a negative thought out of your head, use a positive thought to push it out. When you have your mind clear of that, make your head neutral and your attacker won’t be able to see anything. Also, don’t underestimate positive thoughts. Being extremely happy makes you as vulnerable as being depressed.”

“Ok. I think I see what you are saying.” Harry said, beginning to comprehend what he just said.

“Would you like to try once more before you leave?” he asked, his searing blue eyes looking into Harry’s emerald ones.

“Ok.” Harry agreed ad took a couple of steps away from him.

Professor Kahne took out his wand and stood facing him, but he didn’t use Legilimency right away. He was still teaching Harry how surprise attack works.

When Harry was least expecting it, Professor Kahne shouted the words and he was inside Harry’s head. He was on a gigantic chess board and Ron had just sacrificed himself…Ginny and Draco were kissing in front of him… “Block the negative thoughts with a positive.” Harry thought. Ginny was laughing merrily with him, Ron and Hermione. The image was dimmer. Harry soared into the air, letting the wind beat against his face. The first time on a broom. He could see Professor Kahne’s face. Harry was at the Burrow with all the Weasley’s, smiling. Professor Kahne’s face began to dim again.
“Don’t underestimate positive thoughts…” went through his head and Harry knew what he had to do. He was thinking too much positive thoughts and it was only hurting him. He began to think of something neutrally.

Walking along one of the many corridors…Laying down onto his four poster bed… Professor Kahne’s face was visible, clearer than before. “Protego!” Harry shouted and Professor Kahne was thrown completely from his mind.

Hope you liked it!!
