Chapter 18

“That is like the fifth person who has asked me why I broke Ginny’s heart.” Harry said through gritted teeth as he and Ron made their way to the common room. They had just left the Charms classroom when three girls had walked up to him.

“What do you tell them?” Ron asked as a flustered Hermione came out of the girl’s bathroom.

“People swear just because I hang out with you is the reason why Ginny broke up with you.” She said walking along with them.

“I thought Harry broke up with her.” Ron said looking to Hermione back to Harry.

“I did.” Harry said confused. Is she telling people she broke up with him?

“Don’t take it personal Harry. People like to twist things around better than hearing the truth. Just ignore them.” Hermione said as they stopped in front of the Fat lady’s portrait. She said the password but the Fat lady didn’t budge.

“Is it true? Potter isn’t going with that red head anymore?” The Fat lady asked excitedly.

“Don’t call her that!” Harry said angrily.

“Buttersworth.” Hermione repeated. This time she obeyed and swung open. The three of them climbed in and sat in their usual spot by the fire.

“Just ignore it, Harry. A lot worse as been said behind your back.” Hermione said. Harry looked at her sharply. He knew she didn’t mean it in a bad way and he knew she was telling the truth. His second year alone nobody would talk to him because everybody thought he was the Heir of Slytherin. Harry sighed and began working on his Charms homework.

The rest of the week was the same. People whispering when he walked by and an occasional, “Are you seeing anybody else?” from a giggling girl. The only thing that was keeping him going was the knowledge that Quidditch tryouts were Saturday morning. He had booked the pitch for the entire day.

The morning of Saturday was like any other day. The sun was blaring overhead in the enchanted ceiling. Not a cloud in sight. Perfect Quidditch conditions. After Harry had a bit of toast, he grabbed his Firebolt, said goodbye to Hermione (who was going to spend her day in the library), and walked with Ron to the Quidditch pitch. Quite a few people had showed up after them. Dean, Semaus, Colin Creevy and his brother Dennis, Ginny, and the two who were beaters for the team last year, were the first to arrive.

Harry made everybody do warm-ups before dividing them up into groups. Even though Ron was still extremely nervous before his trial, he still out shined all the other keepers by two saves. He then chose Ginny, Dean and Semaus for his chasers and he stuck with his two beaters from last year, Jimmy Peake and Ritchie Coote. They both seemed to have practiced over the summer. When Coote hit his bludger, it made it all the way across the field and through the left goal post. He had said he was aiming for the middle one, but Harry felt this was still fairly good.

They had practiced well into the night and Harry felt way calmer than he had all week. In the locker room, he announced to his new team that practices would be on Tuesdays and Fridays, with an occasional Sunday, while the rest of them changed. One by one, they slowly filed out. Harry noticed that Ginny was taking her time. When Ron asked if he was ready to go back up to the castle, Harry said he would meet him in the common room. Ron shrugged his shoulders and left, leaving him and Ginny alone.

“Think we have a shot at the cup this year?” Harry asked as he put his Firebolt over his shoulder.

“We always do when we have you as our seeker.” Ginny replied with a smile. Harry felt himself blush as they made their way out of the locker room.

“You’re a good chaser too.” Harry said giving her a compliment also.

“Thanks.” She chuckled. Her face was giving off a slight glow from the setting sun. It really made her eyes stand out. Even though she was a little sweaty and her hair was sticking to her face, she was still beautiful.

“Hey, what was that thing you were going to ask me on the train? I was going to ask you earlier but I haven’t seen you all week.” He said, suddenly remembering.

“Oh it was nothing.” She replied. Harry saw her start to turn a pinkish color.

“Come on. Just tell me.” Harry smiled encouragingly.

She sighed and raised her eyebrow slightly while she looked at him. “You really want to know?”

“Yeah. Sure. What is it?”

Ginny stopped near the edge of the Forbidden forest. It was dark and creepy looking as always. The trees moved slightly in the breeze. Every once in awhile, a branch would scrap against another tree and give off a scratching sound. She turned to look at him. She had a blazing look in her eyes and her cheeks were flushed from all day quidditch practice. A string of her scarlet hair was swinging with the wind.

But before he could get an answer out of her, a rustling noise came from behind the trees. It wasn’t like the trees scraping against each other, somebody was moving towards them. Harry looked at Ginny, who nodded back at him. They both pulled out their wands and muttered, “Lumos.” Harry walked forward. He stood in front of Ginny protectively. His heart was beating hard against his chest as he raised his wand toward the source of the noise.

Suddenly, a head popped out from behind a lengthy looking bush. The head then walked out from behind the bush. His pitch-black robes were torn in many different places and he had cuts all along his pale face and arms. Harry heard Ginny gasp next to him as the boy with white blond hair collapsed to the ground.
