So after an eventful day of shopping in San Francisco, I am back home again, and just finished up my homework that needs to be typed up. I still need to read and take notes on the psychology of Reginald Gibbons "Sweetbitter" and hopefully I will be able to stay awake long enough to do that

I did however want to give you all a quick post before I get off the computer for the night. Wish me luck on my reading!

Chapter 16: News From Beyond

After breakfast everyone left. While Dobby cleaned up, ignoring the incessant sighing from Lily, the family made their way to the study. Because only Minerva knew about Dumbledore’s portrait besides the Potters, everyone left with the understanding that the family would get dressed and meet them at an undisclosed location. Undisclosed to Harry anyway.

“How was you birthday breakfast?” A smiling Dumbledore asked Harry as he entered the room.

“It was good.” was all Harry said, his mind in a different place. At a cough though, he looked up, realizing he was being rude, said, “It was very good, Dobby outdid himself as usual. Moody showed up and scared the dickens out of Seamus, who happened to arrive at the same time as he did.” Chuckling slightly, Harry sat down on the couch across from Dumbledore.

“Ah, so that was the bellowing I heard, for lack of a better word.” Dumbledore said a hint of smile on his face.

After everyone was situated Dumbledore began, “I will not take too much of your time, but as I said that I would discuss it with you, and now is as good of a time as any, I would like to speak to you about Sirius.”

Almost identical pained looks crossed the faces of both father and son as they waited for Dumbledore to continue.

After a few moments to allow James and Harry to regain their composure, Dumbledore began.

“You will remember in our last conversation, I told you that I had some news pertaining to Sirius, but I needed to do some research first?” Open seeing Harry and James nod their heads he continued, “I believe that I have discovered the purpose of the veil.”

James and Harry sat forward in their seats, waiting for Albus to continue.

“As you know, I have portraits in two other locations, now this location and the Grimmuald location are really not all that helpful as far as information on this topic is considered, however, as you probably don’t know, I can travel into any portrait that I choose to on the Hogwarts grounds. This is not publicized because the previous headmasters don’t want to make it common knowledge, because people would want them to go all over the school and solve all sorts of problems. The portraits in the headmaster’s office are of course charmed so that other portraits can’t sneak in there and eaves drop, similar to the charms that are placed against ghosts entering the office. In any case, after much disguising myself, I began to travel into other paintings throughout the school gleaning what little knowledge I could from the older portraits. Consequently I found some very interesting information, and a hidden room that even I didn’t know about that contains the portraits of the four Founders. It was there that I learned the purpose of the veil.”

“Wait!” Harry interrupted. “You found the portraits of the Founders?” He asked in awe.

“Yes.” Dumbledore responded, “and to be sure, that is an interesting tale, and very important to the veil, however, we will discuss them later.” He said smiling slightly, but in a tone that ended discussion on that subject for the moment.

“Now,” He continued as if there had been no interruption. “They said that the veil was created and used in their time as a form of punishment. That they, interestingly enough, had once used Dementors as guards to their prisons, but there were too many instances of the Dementors turning, and either sucking the souls out of everyone inside, or turning lose on the unsuspecting country side. The Ministry, instead, decided to create a better way to hold prisoners. The veil was a doorway to the absence of space. It is nothing and it is everything. Prisoners were shoved into the veil upon sentencing and stayed there till brought back. They were not alive, but not dead. They could feel, they could think, some could even whisper, that is the sound that you hear, but they could not move. The problem with it is that it tended to drive people into insanity, and they would come out and go on murder sprees across the country, mumbling about beasts and creatures.” Dumbledore paused in his story to think about his wording before continuing.

The Potter family was sitting in rapt silence hanging on to his every word.

“According to Rowena, there is an incantation to bring a person back from the veil. Since Sirius has only been in there for just over a year, there is a chance that he is unaffected. They all agreed that most people affected negatively were people who had been in there for 5 or more years. One thing to keep in mind is that there are still people in there, people from the Founder’s time, and we do not under any circumstance, want to bring one of them back, it is completely possible, that the people that went insane and ranting about beasts could have been talking about the original criminals that were charged to serve life sentences. The veil was only in active use for about 160 years and then became apparent that another way needed to be found. The Founders were all highly disturbed that the veil had never been destroyed and that all of the people had not been brought back. Whatever the case we need to get him out of there as quickly as possible. I want to expressly warn you though, we do not know what state he will be in when he comes out, and there are so many factors. We don’t know what spell Bellatrix hit him with, if he was alive before he fell in, if whatever is in there has affected him. At the first sign of disease in his mind, he will have to be destroyed. I want you to know that right now, before we proceed. If you can not agree to this, we will not remove him. Do you understand?” Dumbledore asked them in complete seriousness.

Harry and Lily nodded immediately. James closed his eyes, thinking for a moment before opening them and looking at Dumbledore, pain radiating from him. “We need to at least try.” He said, resolutely as he nodded.

“Good!” Dumbledore said smiling, “Go and enjoy your birthday surprise then, Harry. I will pass your assurances on to the Founder’s and we will go from there.” He said smiling as he disappeared from his portrait.
