Chapter 12: 66 Godrics Road

“That was brilliant!” Ron exclaimed as soon as they were clear of the store startling Harry slightly. He had not realized that when he had followed Ginny, Hermione and Ron had followed him.

“How did you know that?” Hermione asked him, a concerned expression on her face.

“I didn’t know it for sure.” Harry said, squinting in the sudden burst of sun light that had made its way through a thin cloud, “It was just a hunch really, it was the only thing that made sense given the facts.”

Making their way down Diagon Alley, Harry suddenly realized that all over in little clusters, groups of people were whispering, all staring at him. Having been stared at almost constantly since coming into the wizarding world, Harry was used to it. “I don’t think that I will ever like it.” Harry said thinking out loud.

“What’s that Harry?” Hermione asked him, interrupting her conversation with Ron as the reached the ice cream parlor.

“All of the staring and the pointing.” Harry said motioning around.

Nodding, Hermione ordered them all ice cream, as the two boys sat down at a table outside.

Hermione and Ron began talking to each other in low tones, effectively leaving Harry out of the conversation, which suited him just fine.

Following Aberforth’s directions, the group made their way down an old dirt road. From the look of it, it was obvious that this road was not used often. Turning a corner, they were suddenly faced with a tall gate that was chained, but had an opening just barely big enough for them to squeeze through. A barely legible wooden sign on the rusty gate read:

66 Godrics Road
Godric’s Hollow Public Cemetery

The day, although early, was warm and Harry had broken out in a light sweat and was slightly out of breath by the time they reached the gate.

“We can wait here if you like Harry.” Hermione said, panting slightly, reaching out she grabbed Ron’s arm signaling him to stop.

“No, its ok guys, I really think that I need you in there with me. Leading the way, Harry squeezed through the gate and entered the cemetery. He made his way to the very back of, and there he found what he was looking for.

Ron and Hermione stood back, while Harry gazed upon the grave of his parents for the first time in his life. He knew that these indistinct grave markers were purely that; just markers, as a silent reminder that someone had died. His parent’s bodies had never been found assumed to be destroyed with the house.

Dropping to his knees, he allowed himself to mourn for the parents he did not remember. After several minutes, he got up from the ground, dried his face on his robes and walked out of the cemetery without saying a word.

Finally, without looking at either Ron or Hermione, Harry stated resolutely. “We will spend the night here, and leave in the morning.

Silently nodding, Ron and Hermione followed Harry.

That night they had dinner with Aberforth. Like the day, it was a warm, slightly balmy night, and the a slight breeze moved the curtain of the open window.

“You know, he thought highly of you, all of you.” Alberforth said in between bites of food. Although he didn’t say a name they all knew who he was talking about.

After an uncomfortable silence, Aberforth continued, “I have something for you, this will be more useful for you. And besides, I think he would have wanted it that way.” That said he gave a long low whistle.

A crack and a flash of light filled the room and suddenly Fawkes appeared, sitting on Harry’s shoulder.

“See.” Aberforth said, taking another bite. “I was right.” As if that settled it.

“Where are you heading next.” Alberforth asked, as he began clearing the table with a flick of his wand.

“Number 12 Grimmuald Place.”Harry replied.

“Don’t you think so Harry?” Hermione asked, interrupting Harry’s thoughts.

“What? Yeah of course.” Harry said distracted.

Hermione giggled, and took the empty bowls of ice cream away, causing Harry to realize that he hadn’t even been aware of eating his. Sighing he forced his mind back to the present. He looked up to find Hermione staring at him intently. He got the impression she knew exactly what he had been thinking about.

“We should head back now.” Harry said standing up. “It has been about two hours; we don’t want to keep your mum waiting, Ron.” He teased, dodging the punch from Ron.

Laughing, the friends made their way back to the Leaky Cauldron.
