Default Astronomy assignment post 2 *different TL from Lany*
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Tina was up early on the morning of April 19. She had a long day of homework and studying for her OWLs ahead, and she wanted to get a jump on things. She had a little extra time before breakfast, so she decided to use it to work on her astronomy assignment. There wasn't another soul to be found as Tina looked around the courtyard... not surprising, giving the early hour. Maybe she could get this done before the courtyard became overrun with people to distract her!

She looked at the sky with a slight frown. the sun was partly hidden behind a cloud; that was going to make sundial reading a lot harder! Oh well, this was one of the dates she was given for the assignment, so she'd have to make do. Tina pulled her sundial out of her bag and set it down on a flat surface in the sunniest part of the courtyard and consulted her compass. After turning her sundial so that the pin faced true north, she tried to read the time... but she got nothing. The sun had gone behind a cloud. Ugh! Now this was going to take even longer! She sat on a nearby bench to wait until the sun reappeared. While she waited, she got started on her notes. If nothing else, she could record the current location and center longitude of the timezone. She flipped back to the first page of her notes for the calculations for exact time and copied them onto the new page for reference. At least she didn't have to do those again!

Tina looked up again after some time had passed to find the sun peeking out from behind the clouds, and a small shadow appeared on her sundial. This was probably as good as she was going to get! She studied her sundial intently. The shadow fell between the 7 and 8 o' clock marks, closer to the 8 than 7, so it must be about 7:45. She jotted down the time on the sundial, then adjusted it according to her calculations. When she was done, she checked her watch for comparison, and... it was over 10 minutes slow. How did that happen?! She was sure she'd read the sundial correctly! Maybe the somewhat cloudy weather had affected her reading? Grumbling in frustration, she finished her notes, packed up her sundial, and headed back inside for breakfast.

Text Cut: Tina's observations

Saturday, 19 April 2098
Location: Courtyard

Center longitude of timezone (GMT): 0
Current location longitude: approx. 3.13 W
3.13 x 4 = 12.52 (rounds up to 13 minutes behind actual time)

Time as displayed on sundial: 7: 45 AM
Time adjusted for accuracy: 7:45 + 13 = 7:58 AM
Time as displayed on watch (for comparison): 8:10 AM

Notes
Not an ideal day for sundial reading! It was partly cloudy outside, and I had to wait a while for the sun to reappear form behind the clouds. The time on the sundial displayed 7:45 AM. When adjusted for exact time according to the time it takes the sun to travel from the timezone's center longitude to here, the calculations came to 7:58 AM. I checked that time against my watch for comparison, and it was off by over 10 minutes. I don't know what went wrong! Maybe the cloudier weather somehow made the reading less accurate?
