Backstory Joan was raised with two magical parents, both former Horned Serpents. Her mother, Serena Anthony(Gunning) was a half-blood raised in both muggle and wizarding environments. Her father, Aron Anthony, was raised in the magical family of Anthony. They were not pure-blood elitists, but they had a very long line of horned serpents and held their children to a very high standard of education. She lived in the Anthony house, which is situated in an American equivalent of Godric's Hallow. The signature characteristic of this house is the mass amount of bookshelves, and nearly half the house being dedicated to a family library.

She was raised in combination of these two childhoods, having been in both muggle and magical primary schools, though put under the same standards as the Anthony family. She came to be a very curious, and intelligent person, who loved to learn, a direct result of the Anthony standards being pushed on her. At a very young age, she already knew how to read and write, far before the average person gets it. She was reading scholarly books by the the age of ten, but had little interest in Quidditch or Quodpot.
