I like artworks that captivate whether it is the eyes such as those of "The Mona Lisa" or just a general scene like "Birth of Venus". I do like sculpting as well but I prefer the vibrancy of paintings."
Did Zelena wish to be an artist? She thought about it for a moment, then continued. "I am an art appreciator but I don't have the skills to be an artist. I am happy playing on my piano."
Kay bobbed her head enthusiastically. “I certainly do agree with you on the ones that captive your attention. I would say the paintings by Leonardo da Vinci are almost always interesting, wouldn’t you?” SPOILER!!: Henrietta! <3 Quote:

.... woah. Zelena seemed to know quite a lot about art history. She waited for the other girl to finish before raising a hand, "I like art. It's a way of expressing yourself, isn't it? Your thoughts, feelings, emotions, beliefs, likes or dislikes... you can convey any of this via a painting or a drawing. I don't paint.. but I like to draw sometimes. I don't think I'm talented enough to be an artist or anything." ... Etta smiled and leaned against her seat, listening to all the other answers.
This was what Kay was trying to get across to her class earlier in regard to the Weeping Woman. “Excellent point, Ms Kramer. Much like music and dance, this is what art does.’’ She smiled. “Never say never.’’ SPOILER!!: Brent! <3 Quote:

Brent pictured it taking the woman three whole minutes to yell out her son's name. Heh.
He copied down all the notes then looked back up at the professor. Did he want to be an artist? No way! So what did he know about art then? Ohhh! He raised his hand. "Sports teams feature art sometimes! There's mascots on their jerseys, and when you go to a Quidditch match, the fans hold up banners with cool art on them," he said. "I haven't gotten much into the painting, but this du--... I mean, this man's pretty talented."
Brent wondered if the man's wife, or whatever she was to him, was pleased with the way she was painted. “Indeed they do! Banners are a great way to showcase your talent whether you think you have it or not. I suggest you give it a try sometime, Mr Westwood.’’ Kay winked. “You may surprise yourself.’’ SPOILER!!: Oliver! <3 Quote:

When they were told to take notes Olly hurried to take his parchment and quill from his bag. He'd originally left it there when he was suspicious about the content of the lesson, but this was definitely something he would like to take notes on. As Professor Stewart wrote each fact on the board, Olly copied it down into his notes. And when it was question time again, Olly's hand again shot into the air confidently. This was definitely a lesson for him. "I like painting, and I usually prefer realism over more abstract forms of painting. But sometimes it is really interesting to look at and see what the artist was trying to convey. Some pieces make more sense than others. I'd love to be a professional artist but it's not necessarily a reliable job to have. Right now I volunteer over the summer to paint sets at a theater."
Quill? “Just a slight reminder that you either need to use a pen or a pencil, Mr Thomas- Borzekowski.’’ It was quite easy for students to slip into the old habit of using their quills so Kay was normally lenient whenever she noticed this. “I agree. And it’s not always easy to figure out what the artists are trying to say. I encourage you to keep on aiming for that goal.’’ She beamed encouragingly. One day hopefully, she’ll be hearing about Oliver being a famous painter. SPOILER!!: Jonas! <3 Quote:

"Professor, would writing be a form of art?" He asked as he raised his hand. “I would certainly say so, Mr Emery. Are you considering being a writer?’’ SPOILER!!: Juno! <3 Quote:

Juno raised her hand and waited to be called one. Once she was, she replied, "Well an interesting fact about Picasso is that his paintings, because there are so many of them, are categorized by periods. For instance in his Blue Period, he painted basically everything in different shades of blue from, I believe 1901 to 1904. I think he has at least 5 periods." She paused and then continued, "I love every aspect of art. But I am not good enough of an artist to pursue it." Leon and her sister would be proud of her answer. They were artists. “Excellent points to add, Ms Darcy. You are absoloutely correct, down to the years as well. Another famous period would be the Rose period.’’ Kay nodded understandingly. “That’s fine. I’m sure you’re talented at something else.’’ SPOILER!!: Derf! <3 Quote:

SIIIIIIIIIIGHING, the first year sunk a little deeper into his seat and glanced sheepishly around the room while listening to the answers his classmates were offering up. Nope...didn't know anything about this particular artist...so he had little to offer up there. As for his opinion on that particular painting, well, scary and uncomfortable had already been offered up so he was reluctant to share those words again. But his opinion on art in general? Well...that he could probably do.
"I like realis-s-stic art," he nodded shyly when it was his turn to speak. "Like...nature drawings-s-s...s-s-sketches-s of creatures...diagrams-s-s. Um...creature anatomy..."
This was another adorable firstie. Kay wanted to hug him as much as she had Carlton but there wasn’t any valid reason to do so, was there? “That tells me you love nature and creatures, Mr Ashbury- Hawthorne,’’ she replied with a beam. “That’s wonderful. And I’m sure you’ll have fun with our activity today.’’ SPOILER!!: Curly Top! <3 Quote:
Originally Posted by Steelsheen Hmm anything else he knew about Picasso? Not really. Oh and that his having children until his 70s, but he didnt think that was particularly relevant to the Art discussion.
Did he want to become an artist? Ohhh dreams of being Freddie Mercury comences. "I play the drums, the guitar, the piano, and I sing and dance! Like Freddie Mercury!" Or at least he thinks he's doing a Freddie Mercury. "Also Professor, I like cooking, and they say cooking is an art form." And it wasnt just the presentation, it was flavors and how they interact with other flavors and the experience when people taste your creation. That was an art form quite different from performing but he feels as happy with it as he does banging on the drum set or flailing about with a make-believe mic. “Basically you’re a one man band, Mr Salander,’’ Kay said, her eyes twinkling. She was impressed and loved that she was able to learn more about her students. “I would agree as I do consider cooking an art form too.’’ In addition to a one man band, Tenacious was also a chef. SPOILER!!: Sinead and Leesha! <3 Quote:

But if this was going to come up on their exam, she'd learn it all the same. And then drop Muggle Studies next year because this was not what she came to a magical school to learn. She should have known better, really; all things muggle related were deathly boring, even from a magical perspective.
"I don't really like art that much," she volunteered, raising her hand. Well, she'd been asked for her opinion, so she was going to give it. "Especially not that. It's ugly and I don't see the point. Magical art is good because it lets you talk to the portrait, and I guess some of them do look nice even if they're muggle paintings, but people could use their time for more useful stuff than painting." But she made her notes, not because she liked to know about a man who was already dead for many, many MANY years but because she didn’t wanted to fail for her exams… Just when she was done making her notes she heard the question from the professor and she looked up, this was a question she could answer! Raising her hand she spoke; “I don’t like art because it’s boring to look at, I know that there is a hidden story inside art but really, I don’t see it and I personally think that a artist is receiving too much credit for their work, if a child from five years old is making the same thing than it’s nothing more than rubbish, but add a name form a famous artist under it and it’s suddenly worth more than any normal people can effort… So yeah, I’m not that into art” she finished her story while looking again at the bored and not that interesting looking painting.
Kay hadn’t expected everyone to like artsy things. “I’m sorry you feel that way, Ms Dance, MS Griffel. Perhaps one day you’ll both be fond of it.’’ Hopefully Sinead and Leesha would at least enjoy today’s activity a little. SPOILER!!: Char! <3 Phone posts are very much appreciated :3 Quote:
Originally Posted by Tegz well obviously Char didn't know this Picasso guy, but she was glad to hear she wasn't the only one who wasn't a fan as far as gut reactions went. But now they were answering about what they think of art? Oh, well...
"I think art is amazing in that it kind of shows not everyone thinks the same, because there's always going to be that one person who likes something and one person that doesn't like something. I also think it's fun, whether you are good at it or not. And sometimes it's easier making something creative to express yourself then it is to actually use words. And I think sometimes, just because you don't understand something, that doesn't mean it can't be beautiful. And maybe things are more beautiful when you don't understand." She said, hand up. Was that dumb? Well, she tried.
The professor listened with rapt attention to Charlotte. She couldn’t help but agree with what the girl had to say. “It is something fun for everyone to do, yes. No matter how old we get, art never does. It’s always around and we can always turn to it whenever needed.’’ Be it a painting, a song- art was for everyone even if they were bad at it. It was great how sometimes the younger ones like Char were able to offer wonderful insights. SPOILER!!: Skylar! <3 Quote:
Originally Posted by PhoenixRising Apparently her classmates were GENIUSES when it came to knowing and recognizing classic Muggle Artists. Weird, but to each their own, Skylar guessed. Also, Picasso had 23 names!? How is that even POSSIBLE?! Unless maybe he was really a woman, disguised as a man for the purpose of selling artwork - cause being a woman was difficult back then to be able to make a name for oneself - and was married like 23 times. Pondering that and letting her thoughts drift off, it wasn't until she heard Charlotte speak up on the differences of art that Sky realized she was still in class.
And there was questions unanswered.
About what they knew about Picasso. "Nothing. I know nothing about Picasso." Skylar said, being bluntly honest.
And about what they liked about art, if they liked it, and what sort of art they liked. "Art is more than just with a paintbrush, or sculpting, but rather art can be linked to sciences and sports and music as art forms. So in terms if I like art, when it comes to the drawing form, I'm not a fan of it, but I can appreciate it. However, I am a fan of the art form with regards to sports." Did that answer the question?
That was not a problem that Skylar didn’t know anything of Picasso. Kay was, however, pleased that she had chosen to answer the other questions. “As do many others who appreciate the drawing form, Ms Diggory. It’s just wonderful to simply enjoy the artist’s work even if you don’t fully understand it.’’ She winked. “Yes, sports is a wonderful art form as well.’’ SPOILER!!: Liv! <3 Quote:

Mainly "quiet" because she was concentrating on forming the words with her quill. It was harder to multitask these days, but she was managing. Also... "I do performance art, ballet...which may not be considered art by everyone, but it still allows a person to feel things. Even the person dancing it. It's art in motion." Mhm. "Swan Lake is probably my favorite masterpiece." In the name of performance art, but she knew Rooney would argue his beliefs on musical theatre. "Les Misérables would be a close second." Because this type of art was far more exciting than something stationary, right? Between the music and dialogue... It all had the power to make you feel so much.
Kay had to move closer to be able to hear Olivia’s answer. She listened carefully. Was that a hint of fondness she detected in the girl’s tone? “I would say that ballet is a form of art, Ms Phillips. It is still a way of expression. Ballet is beautiful.’’ She smiled. “Those two are wonderful choices!’’ She had seen them both. “Also, remember to use a pen or pencil,’’ the woman added quietly. SPOILER!!: Kane! <3 Quote:

That's what he'd been confused over. THAT guy was definitely an artist, right? Oh well, didn't matter now. Kane shook his head and refocused his attention on Stewart and wrote down the notes she was going over.
Well, he didn't know a whole lot about Picasso, so instead he raised his hand to talk about his own personal views on art. "I think it's awesome because literally ANYTHING can be art. You don't have to be good at it to make something someone thinks is beautiful," he explained. “Excellently said, Mr Westwood!’’ She was rather proud of him and hoped that his words, and that those of others would have some influence on the students who weren’t into art. SPOILER!!: Rooney! <3 Quote:

With a grin as his girlfriend spoke, Rooney nodded about how she enjoyed art forms that weren't at stand still. "I agree with Liv, Professor." That was a shocker, wasn't it? NOT. "I much prefer the art that you watch or take part in. Something with a story and a lesson to learn. If I go home after seeing something and think about it...then that's what it was supposed to do. That's what I love. The learning."
This was no surprise to Kay that Rooney agreed with Olivia. They were well matched, weren’t they? She beamed. “Learning is quite satisfying,’’ she agreed. “Knowledge is power after all. Keep on doing what you love, Mr Bronwyn!’’ As long as it didn’t involve him arriving dressed haphazardly anywhere at anytime. SPOILER!!: Cass! <3 Quote:

Hopefully the woman it was based on that the professor had mentioned hadn't been too insulted by the end results of his work. And twenty-three names? What in Merlin's beard was up with that? The Ravenclaw took note of what else they were told about the painting and the painter as she tried to think of something to add like they were asked. Or at least her feelings on art. "I like 2 dimensional works of art like painting and drawing," she mused, seeing as someone had mentioned music and dance. "Especially when color is used to show pretty scenes and images." Just maybe not the weeping woman. “Colour is very important in helping to catch a viewer’s attention so I can see why you would like that, Ms McNally.” So yes, Kay was in agreement with Cassie. She was also pleased that Cassie liked painting.

Kay moved back towards her desk. “Alright, everyone! It’s time to get started on the activity. But first, I would like each of you to come up to my desk in an orderly fashion and take the supplies you will be needing.’’ Some of them had guessed by now that there were art supplies under that last sheet by now, she reasoned. She carefully removed it so that they could all see. “What I have here are plain, white paper about 25cm by 25cm in length and width; watercolour sets.’’ She pointed to the two sets of materials neatly stacked on one end of her desk. “Brushes.’’ Of all lengths. “Salt both coarse and fine.’’ These were set in individual salt shakers. “Water and small plastic cups.’’ The water had been placed in large mugs and had to be thrown out into the cups. “What I would like you to do is to take a sheet of paper or two, a watercolour set, a brush or a few that you will be most comfortable using, salt- either or both types if you would like and about a half of water. There are enough materials for you individually.’’ OOC: Heya! Just one post is required for this mini activity, guys! You have 24 hours! |
