Since it was in the middle of winter and blistering cold outside of this very special greenhouse. Also, Olivia knew of a few other magical plants that suffered dramatically in the cold, in more unique ways than just not growing at all.
Hmm. She took a few more sips from her water bottle, taking time to slip out of her cloak and work robe. Whew, humidity.
He expected these answers, and they weren’t wrong. He smiled. “Yes, thank you, Liv. And...well, they survive in the cold...but they do NEED sunlight and the heat…” he would explain in a bit, yes, if no one else did first? SPOILER!!: Azura Quote:

She sent a look of appreciation towards Jace as he got a point.. such a good Ravenclaw he was..
She tilted her head as Professor Meyers spoke and she raised her hand. "So you can control the temperature and the environment they are growing in. I'm not sure how rain and cold weather would affect these flowers, but I can't imagine they would do them good. " She said with a nod.
He smirked at Azura’s answer, though. “I will show you what rain does to the flowers...soon,” he nodded. SPOILER!!: Nat Quote:

She didn't bother getting closer to them because he was already talking and she didn't get a chance to do the diagram since she had been distracted by the flames.
Wait.. hold on..
They were actually suppose to be on fire? Roses that had flames? This was beyond interesting. Her attention driven from the roses on fire to the professor fully. "As said the greenhouses are quite cold this time of year and obviously the safety of the other plants had to be taken into consideration with flames and the heat, but also doing it here it becomes a more controlled environment where the flowers can be in a better setting for them and us."
That's at least what it seemed to be. Her eyes back on the flames of the roses and then back to the blackened ones. She wanted to touch them, but knew better of it.
He looked at Natalia for a bit when she answered. “Well...greenhouses are never cold per say..they are actually quite warm from the sunlight they absorb.” He explained gently. “But...the safety of other plants is VERY important when it comes to these flowers...and not just because of the flames.” SPOILER!!: Miranda Quote:

And Holy Merlin's monkey!.. The other were fire roses... Well, she didn't much know what those were for.. Unless they were a really messed up way to burn someone enamoured by it hypnotic dancing flames... What the..?
Miranda had to shake herself back to reality... Dazed for a moment as she heard the professor's question..... Hmmm....Thinking cap on she pondered this quandry for a few minutes before raising her hand.
" Excuse me.. Professor... I've heard that these types of flowers are usually grown in great secrecy....Could that be why you've got them in here? "
She really hoped she was sorta right... she'd been trying to participate in her classes better.
Paul chuckled. “Floo Flowers and Fira Igniferas are kept very hidden...as well as many herbologists and flower breeders wanting them to be kept away from the general public eye. But not...in order to keep them secret. There’s another reason for that,” he winked. SPOILER!!: Colt Quote:

He had a faint idea now why they were learning about them. He raised his hand and said, "Well I think we are studying the floo flowers because we need another alternative besides the powder.." he gestured to his favorites over there. Frankly he wasn't a fan of the powder but the flowers he could deal with.
Paul blinked at Colt a few times before answering, for the boy hadn’t answered the question he asked. He hadn’t asked WHY they were studying Floo Flowers… ”Well, I, uh, appreciate your input on that matter. For another time, perhaps,” and certainly not his subject area. SPOILER!!: Paige Quote:
Originally Posted by sweetpinkpixie Yes. Hi. Hello. Hi, Professor Myers. Lovely to see you, as always...but... DID EVERYONE UNDERSTAND NOW?!
Paige continue to bounce in her seat, entirely missing the opportunity to offer some assistance to Blaise with heating charms but the professor handled that nicely regardless, as her blue eyes continued to gaze upon the flowers. Not just any flowers, their proper names aside, but COUSIN species at that. Close cousins too. And to add to their fascination, one was a hybrid species which was such an interesting and complicated process in and of itself and had been introduced to them by the very man educating them today. A process that she had come to know quite intimately considering how her and Brian often chose to decompress with a little experimentation. Experimentation that had brought them Neville and a few other plant babies.
Professor Myers was talking and asking something ... but the Hufflepuff was far too mesmerized looking at the Floo Flowers nearby where she sat and how intrigued she was that they were sharing a home with Flaming Roses considering their pollination tendencies.
And Flaming Roses were wicked useful too! Especially if you were in the magical creature field. Something that the seventh year had on her Hogwarts bucket list to achieve before graduation - creating a hybrid plant that added something beneficial to the magical world, that is. So far, however, she had mostly created novelty plants...such as the dancing sunflowers she had gifted Noel and all the cutesy plants her and Brian had come up with. She needed to broaden her hybrid experimentation some, include things a bit more complex like Firebushes, clearly, if she hoped to achieve this.
Had she mentioned how breathtaking Floo Flowers were yet? No offense to you, Burning Roses, but Paige just found something incredibly alluring about the smoldering black roses and the way the fiery glow licked the petals like that...
Could they...get their hands on them now? Please? Professor Myers?
Paige Skeeter, stop being sooooo darn adorable. Paul was thrilled at her reactions, even if she wasn’t answering the questions he KNEW she knew the answers to.
In due time, m’dear, in due time. SPOILER!!: Katherine Quote:

She was always interested in the end state.
"Because they're cool, Sir. I would think that's quite obvious."
HA! Paul laughed. “Really? You do think they’re cool? Let me ask you this, Miss Toussaint--why do YOU think they’re cool?” he asked, smirking. SPOILER!!: Jace Quote:

The thirteen year old paused to look at the professor when he called out his name...and gave him a point for his keen observation. Keen observation? Observation? Jace dead-panned at the man, and then gave him a shallow bow of his head to say his thanks. The Ravenclaw was a bit surprised, given the fact that he didn’t put much thought on his answer. He pretty much stated the obvious, which was the by-product of the heat in relation to his thinking.
Turning, he saw Azura gave him a look, and in return gave him a tired grin. It was the heat, okay?
Jace sighed, now wiping the sweat on his forehead with his arm. He thought the dome was worse than any stuffy dojo in Japan. Now...for the second question, the Ravenclaw raised his hand to answer. “I suppose it is to mimic the environment of a muggle incinerator?” Because in all seriousness, it felt like they were in one! “I suppose this contained dome is used to help the Fira Ignafera burn properly, to produce the ash used for Floo powder?” Science, really.
The Ravenclaw retracted back his hand, and impatiently pulled his shirt away from his chest and fanned himself with it.
Phew!
Muggle incinerator, hmm? Paul thought for a moment, but shook his head. “No, no, not really. And the dome is...to help them create heat, sure, but it isn’t really for that purpose in the way you’re thinking. And we’ll get to the ash…” he nodded. SPOILER!!: Tenacius Quote:

"You dun wanna set the other plants on fire too?..." which is bound to happen with himself clumsy students "... and uh, they need as much sun and a certain temperature range to keep alive? The kind of temperature that could cause other plants to wilt with the heat?" “Well, Tenacius, the flames would surely NOT be good for the other plants, you’re right, but these flowers don’t need extreme heat year round to survive.” HE WANTED TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING AT ONCE BUT HE HAD TO WAIT TO SEE IF ANYONE KNEW FIRST. SPOILER!!: Aoife Quote:

FIRE plants. That's why it was so hot in here.
Aoife missed the first question due to fascination. She could think of a few people she could give those Fire Roses to. Meuehehe... Anyway, she looked up and around at the dome-like greenhouse around her to think of a particular difference between this and a regular greenhouse. In fact, she shrugged her shoulders to herself to begin with but decided to take a stab in the dark.
"Safety. In case they explode... they need their own protective bubble?" Explode... engulf the place in flames... that sorta thing. "Can... they explode, professor??" She wasn't suddenly concerned or anything...
….Paul laughed.
And he laughed a lot, too, in a good natured way. How adorable! “They cannot explode, no. Especially not those--” he gestured at the Floo Flowers. “They don’t even really...flame the way the Fire Roses do.” SPOILER!!: Harvey Quote:

"And they are probably here to be separated from other flowers, because other plants in the greenhouses wouldn't survive in such heat?" he ventured.
This was an interesting question! “I would hazard it’s a bit of both right now, actually. VERY good question, Harvey! Take a point!” He beamed. “But...well, some of them would, some of them wouldn’t.” SPOILER!!: Brian Quote:

And kinda made him want to leave the lesson entirely and borrow someone's notes on the matter and look at the plants when he had a free period. Or something. Because this was suffocating.
He managed to catch a glimpse of Paige, however, and the bouncing on her end was hard not to notice. So he assumed they looked pretty darn cool. But ah, people were somewhat settling down, so this Hufflepuff would take the opportunity to discreetly wheel at the plants and observe them and keep his opinions on why they were kept in here to himself because he was partly certain that Professor Myers did it because he was mildly sadistic and enjoyed the torture of young British students who were not fond of heat and humidity.
Paul noted Brian’s silence, but didn’t much mind. Brian could get away with almost anything in the eyes of Paul Myers.
And it wasn’t because of his..condition---what? No? NEVER! Hmph. SPOILER!!: Leesha Quote:

Oeh, a question! She wasn’t sure of course, but she had a idea about the answer so quick she raised her hand to speak; “I think because they need to heat or they can’t stand to cold” she said satisfied with herself. “Well, not necessarily, m’dear, but you aren’t that far off!” he said encouragingly to the younger student. That also related to the answer he would give to the first real question of the lesson. Olly raised his hand. "If they were inside the actual greenhouse they might burn it down." And since there were other flowers and stuff in there that would not be good.
Heh. “Maybe. Certainly the other plants would be affected…” Paul pulled his gloves on, preparing, in the very least, for what was to come. SPOILER!!: Bella Quote:
Originally Posted by Lady Marmalade Floo flowers??? Ooohhh.... She would have never guess that the powder they used to travel through fireplaces came from these flowers. It was cool and she was very interested in learning more about these fiery flowers.
Bella thought for a moment trying to figure out why Professor Paul had decided to hold the lesson in this dome shaped oven. "Safety reasons." It was the first thing that came to mind, but as she thought deeper other possible reason started to surface. "Umm... because there are certain components that's needed to keep the fire burning. I'm guessing that if the fire was to be extinguished they would die." Bella replied, before adding. "Oxygen, fuel, and heat is what's needed to keep a fire going."
There was plenty of oxygen or else they wouldn't get in here and there was plenty of heat considering how hot it was inside this dome, way hotter than a normal greenhouse. As for fuel, the burning petals helped keep it going. They were obviously magical flowers to stay burning like this. She wasn’t sure if her response was even close to the right answer, but it was a good guess. “Well, your thoughts aren’t exactly illogical, m’dear,” he began. “But if they’re flames go out..they do not, however, die.” The flowers didn’t burn year round. BUT he would get to that in a moment. SPOILER!!: Jonas Quote:

She sipped her bottle of ice water as she listened and considered an answer. Why was the lesson in here? Because Herbology just HAD to make studying even pretty things like roses awful in some way, that was why.
Okay, but in all seriousness... "Probably because the other plants in the greenhouses would not like this amount of heat," she offered, raising her hand. "And maybe they wouldn't survive even being near these ones even without the high temperature...since I doubt most plants like the ashy-looking type of soil the Floo Flowers have." “So, you think the soil for the Floo Flowers is a different type of soil then the fire roses have?” he shot back at Rula, smirking quite a bit. Maybe he was getting a bit ahead of himself. SPOILER!!: Kitty Quote:
Originally Posted by Goblinfrog Kitty raised her hand. "Is it because burning hot climates like this is the only kind of climate they can live in? Perhaps a more mild temperature would snuff out the fires." It was a logical guess and most of her fellow classmates were making the same observations.
Her hand did not go down after she answered the professors question, because she had one of her own. "I'm curious about the Floo flowers sir," she said. "Well also curious about the fire roses, but my question is about the Floo flowers. Are they named that way because they are an ingredient of Floo powder, or were they found growing inside Floo networks? I guess I just wondered how they got their name."
Paul smiled gently. “Well, not exactly, Kitty,” but she, as others, weren’t thinking illogically! He was quite proud of their sense-making abilities.
These flowers were just...weird!
Paul paused for a moment. He didn’t want to go TOO much into what they’d find out very shortly, so, he merely replied, “They were named Floo Flowers BEFORE floo powder was invented,” he said with a nod. SPOILER!!: Junia Quote:

Oh. Okay. Reasons these flowers were here. "Also, because giving these specimen their own location ensures that none of us get distracted by the other plants in the greenhouses during the lesson." Pause. "Not that I've ever done that before, of course." Angelic smile for you, professor man.
Heh. Paul’s eyes were alight when he heard Junia’s cheeky answer. “No, of course not, m’dear, not you, no,” he winked. SPOILER!!: Cassie Quote:

Quite an interesting pair of names for the plants but also so very fitting it seemed as Cassie wrote them down on the top of her notes as class officially began. And related? Well related more than just a type of species…that was cool too. As the first question was posed, the Ravenclaw switched her attention once more to the chart, reading each entry as she debated her thoughts. As well as listen to what her fellow students were providing in their own responses to the professor’s question.
An elder Slytherin girl gave an answer that had been on Cass’ train of thought so she tried to amend it. “This greenhouse provides a way to modify the environment to better suit them and for us to better observe them.” That seemed like it made a decent amount of sense.
Well, he supposed he should have guessed a Ravenclaw would give the most calculated answer! He smiled over at Cassie. “I like this answer. Yes yes, you’re right. Take a point.” She didn’t give details or answers she was guessing at...but she was still, technically, correct, and Paul admired that. He had been a Ravenclaw once, too.
No one else had anything to add? Paul smiled as he stepped up the board . “WELL I would like to look closely at the Rosa Igniferas first!” he smiled and gestured at that side of the room. The roses that were...on fire! “Now, first thing about Rosa Igniferas is that they are not your typical hybrid plant. They are the result of a long time process of breeding fire bushes and mundane roses,” he began. “It’s taken years and years and years and YEARS but...they are they’re own breed now, of course, and they were originally bred by a man named Prometheus Rosier,” what a name, eh? He smiled. “Interestingly enough, when they were first bred, they were used to incubate and hatch orphaned dragon eggs. As far as I know, that has fallen out of practice completely.” And no longer in use. “They only flame in MIDSUMMER,” he started, “And THIS is one reason why I put them in the Greenhouse,....where they can drink up all the sun. This dome greenhouse is very good at simulating deep summer weather,” he explained. “ But they live year round..can survive the bold..they just don’t flame at those times. Look at normal roses, I suppose! They burn for several hours during the days in the summer...and when the sun goes down, their flames eventually burn out.”
Was everyone getting this? “Now, we’re going to get into simple handling of these bushes...before we move on to the Floo Flowers.” Paul was far more interesting in the grey-black cousins. He had left out ONE important detail about the fire roses, but he would CERTAINLY get to it at some point. “Handling these babies can be..difficult, since they do burn. The way herbologists have figured out how to do this is...keeping them wet.” He gave his wand a wave and sprayed a nearby bush with a well placed Aguamenti. As soon as the water hit the roses, the fire went out with a dying sizzzzzzzle noise. Paul kneeled down and touched the rose. “I can touch them and care for them all I want...see?” he smiled as he stroked the rose petals. “Now, as you can see...these roses are planted. In the ground. And I want them potted,” he stood up and stretched. “Pots are in the back...number one rule is to KEEP THEM WET...if you see them starting to flare up, IMMEDIATELY shoot them with water. Second rule...when potting the plots, you need to scoot them up roots and all, so be careful not to harm the roots when potting them. THIRD RULE. You need to put soil in the pot, first, scoop out the bush, place the bush IN the pot, and then put more soil in.” He was going over it quickly mostly because they had learned to pot plants last term...he couldn’t remember WHICH plant he’d chosen to do it with, but yeah.
“Now, lets go!” Paul would be potting one, too. “If anyone has any questions, PLEASE ask me. Don’t forget to wear gloves, my dears!” OOC: OKAY sorry I am so late you guys >.< I was not feeling well yesterday at all. BUT HERE WE ARE and you all have a good bit to RP potting the plants. Take however many posts you want, ask questions IC to Paul or OOC to me if you need to me <3
PS. Paul DID cast a cooling charm earlier when Blaise asked. So. It feels much better in the dome now! Thanks everyone!
