They're often considered an omen of death, right?"
And that was it. That was all her knowledge of black dogs. Now if he'd asked what muggles believed about fairies, she could have taught three full classes on that. Maybe four. But the death omen stuff, that only appealed to her in the oh cool, scary sense and she often lost interest quickly after just learning the basics. "Oh, and I think sometimes they're associated with lightning somehow. I think."
............... Cryptid?!
Hirsch looked over at the girl, and then at the picture and then back again. "You're nearly there, Haddie. Yes, it can be considered as a cryptid," Especially since it only really came up in folklore and other kind of stories, "And yes, it's often considered an omen of death but not quite." Instead of it being a creature in the Muggle world, it looks to be in our world. "Could it be a ghost like creature," Niomi took another guess. With the way the picture looked, part of the creatures features are flowing in the wind. This creature looks so interesting she was curious and excited to learn about it.
A wolf was an interesting guess but...... "I'm afraid not, Miss Kelly, but you're right about it being a ghost creature." And that was all he was going to say about that. Text Cut: Jaemin Quote:

He listened attentively to his classmates' answers, humming to himself and nodding lightly with each one. He knew stories about most, if not all, of these creatures. Lots and lots of stories. Most of them, he assumed, were Muggle stories... because his mom had told them to him. However... there was only one story he knew that involved a white dog that liked to haunt about people in the dark.
"That's Gally-trot!" he murmured, tilting his head and staring at it. "Right? It follows people around sometimes and if they run from it, it chases them..."
But his mom said it couldn't catch them, no matter how slow they ran. It just... followed. Which was rude. Rude dog.
Maybe it wasn't Gally-trot.
Gally-trot? Oh, Jaemin. "Close. Veeeeery close. It does follow them around, yes, but the name isn't quite right." Was he going to ask what Galley-trots were? No. Text Cut: Esme Quote:

Anyway...
What the heck was THAT supposed to be? Esme stared at the picture and tried not to shudder. Whatever it was seemed not very nice and she was happy that there was no way that it could hurt them. After a moment she raised her hand. "Is it a hellhound?" There were A LOT of those in folklore.
A hellhound?! Hm. Hm. "Close. They're related, in a way, and you could call them that but that's not their official name. And they have a much more magical presence than anything else." So, close. Text Cut: Fiyero Quote:

At first he thought it was a hellhound like some of his classmates had said, but then he remembered the clues Hirsch had given them.It sounded a lot like a creature he'd read about, but what was its name? Something that started with a B...
Finally he remebered. "Is that a barghest?" he said after being called on. "They have eyes that look like that, and I think I read something about them haunting travelers at night."
Some of these guesses were very out of the box. The man glanced at the boy and then over at the picture. "Not quite but," He paused to look back at the boy again, smiling slightly, "You're on the right track with that last sentence of yours." Text Cut: Scarlett Quote:

Back to the object at hand...was that a ghost? That was the first thing Scarlett thought when she saw it. A ghost dog. She knew that wasn't what it was, but that was the first thing that popped into her head. She raised her hand after a few moments though after she had a good guess. "Is that a grim?" she asked. Those death omen dogs? It was a bit more grey than Scarlett would think it would be...weren't they supposed to be black?
She gave up. That was her guess and she was sticking with it.
Oh, well, if this wasn't an interesting answer, then he didn't know what was. "Very close, Miss Guidry. They're often mistaken for the grim but they don't carry that much of a bad omen with them." Text Cut: Dot Quote:

"That's a gytrash, sir. They're native to this part of the world and look like creepy ghost dogs." And she'd never seen one in person... Merlin, was there one in person? Creepy dog in the house?
If there was a moment where he could jump for joy - and if he was the type of person to do so - he would've done so at this very minute. Instead, a wide smile was set into place and the man simply nodded along to what the Slytherin Prefect was saying. "Precisely! Very well done, Miss Wojack." Text Cut: Cornelius Quote:

Because Cornelius kept pushing his glasses up his nose in hopes the professor would notice and be like, 'Heeey, Cornelius, looking good' or something like that.
Dream that would be.
Questions were being shot and his nose was getting itchy from moving the glasses so much. So the boy stopped and focused on the last question.
!!!!!!!!!
He KNEW THAT ONE. AND even had a story to go with it. His hand shot into the air, whipping the student's hair sitting next to him with a small rush of wind from how fast he moved. PICK ME. "It's an animal ghost, or as some wizard folk refer to it an animal spirit of a dead animal." His heart was hammering away from excitement. "My family and I came across two during our family camping trip and it was sick! They were ready to attack and the adults--mostly my mum 'cos she's a former Auror and is wicked with her wand and powerful--created this force field of light and scared them away. But we had to leave because the adults were all paranoid and stuff." BREATHE. "But yeah, that's an animal ghost."
The end.
No, Cornelius, your glasses had not gone unnoticed. In fact, seeing them upon the boy only made the man proud and push his own glasses further up his nose.
Right. Lesson. Focus.
That response? Hirsch tilted his head, half-amused and half...... well, confused. "That's a really close response and they're often referred to as that. And, best of all, you mentioned the main part that drives them away." Good. Really good. Text Cut: Hattie Quote:

Hattie blinked, a little scared as she looked at the creature. It looked really scary. But then they were in a defense against the dark arts lesson, so she should have figured that the creatures were going to be dark. Hattie had no idea what it was, just that it looked really scary. But the Professor had said that they could just describe it's characteristics. So she would just do that.
Raising her hand, the blonde smiled. "It looks like a wolf. A scary one. It's eyes are really red. I think that's what makes it magical, because there are wolves in the muggle world too. It just looks really creepy."
A wolf? He was getting a lot of that kind of response, wasn't he? The man considered his answer before piping up, "Not quite, Miss Paton. It does look like one but it's very different." Text Cut: Salander Quote:

He wasn’t sure. He knew what he was seeing, its just that he was sure theres a technical term for that creature and he had no idea what it was.
-- unless its not a creature? "It looks like someone's Patronus-- oh! A Dark Wizard's Patronus?" Them red eyes just says EVIL.
This was the most far out response he'd received.
And he liked it.
Unfortunately for the Gryffindor, "Well, no. But it very well could be a Dark Wizard's Patronus,, if they're capable of producing one." Text Cut: Hady Quote:

However no one had given the answer to whatever the creature was in the days lesson. Her hazel eyes shifted to towards the large photo of what sort of looked like an angry ghost like dog. It's red eyes and what the professor had said about it 'haunting lone travelers in the dark' wasn't much of a hint. She had seen it before, only not in person. In a photo or something. It haunted things of course but there was more to it, wasn't there?
Chewing her lip in thought Hady kept her eyes on the photo of the creature, her hand lifting into the air. "I can't recall it's name but doesn't it haunt lonely roads or something and can sometimes be seen as a horse?" Now she could be entirely wrong but this was a guess and not even a complete one at that.
Oh ho ho! There was another smile in place as he looked between Miss Lynch and Miss Wojack and then back again. "You're very right about that. Well done." Text Cut: Blaise Quote:

Granted, he didn't know the answer to THIS one but the boy was still enthused and it still showed on his face in the dimly lit room. Nothing dampening this spirit today, no Sir.
Not willing to have his thunder silenced, Blaise stuck his hand up. He would fake this knowledge. "It's like Dot said, Professor, that's a Gytrash." Prefects were always right, therefore, Dot was right and by extension so was he. To be sure, the boy reached for his text--the handy thing. It was a couple flips before he found a picture that looked similar to that of the one the Professor had shown them-- "Er.....Professor............they aren't actually in the Forbidden Forest, are they?" Tell him the book was lying. Books did that sometimes, yeah?
Hirsch had no idea as to whether Blaise actually knew or was simply lying through his teeth but, frankly, he didn't even care. As long as the kid was participating.
And then he added to his answer. "Well........ the Forest is big. Can you guarantee that it's not in there?" Text Cut: The silent ones Quote:

As class started up, Rooney settled purely on just listening and noting down all of the answers his peers gave. Along with smiley faces in response to each one. Namely faces with rolling eyes and the like. People should have just stayed quiet sometimes, really, truly...
ALSO.. With Hirsch saying 'all information welcome' just gave Rooney more of a reason to be rolling his eyes. It was a simple question, for a simple answer. Why did people go on....and on....about nothing interesting. Shame. Quote:

Then the professor showed a picture that led into the next question. Janelle wasn't sure what it was, some kind of very creepy dog-like creature. They weren't going to have to see a real one were they? She certainly hoped not. What could it be? All that Janelle could think of was a werewolf, but that answer didn't seem right. Given the professor's description, she doubted that it could be that. Drawing a blank, Janelle decided to keep quiet........for now. Maybe something would come to her if she waited long enough. Thankfully.. Her orbs landed on the picture of a weird looking dog thing.. If this were muggle studies, she would suggest that was a Pokemon. But this wasn't, and so that clearly was not. She listened to the answers.. Weren't Grims's supposed to be black? She honestly had no idea..
Its a creepy ghost dog.. Sadly she didn't think that answer would fly. So she kept quiet.. Quote:

So, she sat and listened to everyone's thoughts on what it could possibly be. Since she really didn't have an answer herself she wrote down all the possible answers that everyone else was coming up with. Once the professor revealed the answer she would circle the correct one.
She really wanted to do well in this subject so she knew she had to pay really good attention. She wanted to be an Auror one day...or maybe just in magical law enforcement. She wasn't completely sure yet.
The silent ones only got a fleeting glance made in their direction before he moved on. He didn't mind the silentness but it was very easy to fall asleep in this setting so as long as they weren't doing that, he didn't mind. Continue.
Time was ticking and he still needed to ask one more question before the activities so it was time to move on before the next professor bit his head off for keeping the students back. "So, those were some interesting guesses from your peers but, only a handful of students got the answer correct." Not bad, really. "As Miss Wojack, Mr Bellaire and Miss Lynch have correctly guessed, this creature is a Gytrash." Cue a small flick of his wand that animated the picture. "They're nocturnal beasts that roam through woodlands and feast on humans in packs of two to six. They love the darkness, using it to their advantage to suck in their prey. And according to them, the lonelier the prey, the better. See, you're more vulnerable to attack if you're on your own." But surely, they'd have no qualms about that, right? "They're generally found in parts of Scotland and England and have been known to be in the Forest itself."
Again, no need to panic, right? "BUT! Like with any creature, dark wizard or even your regular human being who wants to steal your wallet, there's always a weakness. There's that something that'll be the key in defeating them. For the Gytrash, a creature who loves darkness, that weakness is simple."
A dramatic pause happened in which the man tapped on the nearest jar of bluebell flames, making the light much brighter and illuminating a much larger part of the room with its flickering bright blue light. "Light! See, Gytrashes hate light. If you have light with you, you could hold the creature at bay. If you hold the light close to the creature itself, you could even make it disappear. No longer a threat, is it?" "But! One thing that I'd like to bring to your attention is that while light is your savior against them, fire isn't. Fire will be completely useless against them. Can anyone guess why light works but fire doesn't? I mean, surely, they're both forms of light, aren't they?" Let's get those brains working even more. OOC: I'm having laptop issues so thank you for sticking with me on this <3 And this is just one last question before we move onto the activities! YAY!
I'll continue this class tomorrow evening GMT+1/BST ^^
