Bringing something to class and eating while answering questions wasn't the end of the world, was it? Judging by the looks on their faces, they approved of it. Hehe. He grabbed a chocolate frog and ate it while they answered.

Nasty stuff it could be, or at least, the reactions and dramatics of it all were nasty, or so he'd heard. Granted, Gavin had probably exaggerated a great deal of it.
Did his dad work in Department of Mysteries? Cosgrach was curious now, since that was among his options too, but decided to ask it after class. For now, he just nodded at the boy.

"That's right," he said and the answer showed on the blackboard.

"Amorentia smells different to everyone because the smell is connected to the love of the smeller."

"The drinker must take the potion regularly for the pseudo love to remain intact.''
Well, of course the boyfriends answered after each other... hehehe.

"You two are right." Cue a griiiiiin.

That was not the same thing as love, technically.
"Which isn't love, exactly. That's right." Speaking of... his sister? What was she up to?

"Can I come pick another candy Professor? This one won't last long."
...HEHEHE.

Okay, this was funny. Quite. He couldn't help but wonder whether Blaise was talking with first-hand experience. He had to ask it after class. This was golden if they boy did manage to - ahem, this was a serious issue and needed to be addressed!

"My sympathies," he said as he tried to hide his grin, "but you should stay clear of bigger girls as a general rule." Until he hit puberty and got strong himself, but he couldn't discuss THAT in the middle of a lesson.

"Sure, take as many as you want." As long as... he left some for the Professor. Blaise WOULD leave some for him, right?

Cosgrach missed her expression when he announced what they were going to brew, so he only focused on her answer.

"That's right," he said, "and obsession isn't love and it's actually dangerous."

"Some work as 'the first person you see' and some work as 'the brewer' but yes, the ultimate emotion is obsession, not love." Dante was getting better... was it the concentration potion's job or his?

Oh, look! Mister Adair decided to answer in his class!

They were buddies. Cosgrach didn't know what Sophie did, but she must have somehow convinced the boy that Cosgrach wasn't the Devil. Good for her and him! First the boy's essay in the previous homework and now this answer... well, he had to congratulate her after class while also lamenting the fact that he couldn't scare the boy so easily anymore.

Err... "Depends on what you call 'crazy'?" Cosgrach shrugged. "It makes the drinker obsessed. And if the drinker is already an... instable person... then yeah."

...everything... wasn't so funny.

As people answered, Cosgrach's eyes fell on Sophie again and he looked at her with concern. Was she ever going to be okay? Was she really okay as she claimed to be? She LOOKED so and if she gave small signs, well, he couldn't catch it. So... moving on... for now.

He didn't know the song, but it was still true. Sort of. "Too much unrequited love, perhaps?"

Yeah, he was expecting this question.

"It smells like my family, my first cauldron," which was damaged beyond repair but he still kept it anyway, "and a Hogwarts feast." How it smelled for them, they would soon find out! Unless they had already used the potion on someone.

"And yes, as you meet new things and people, your love change, so does the smell."

Well. It was still true. "And it's forbidden to bring them to school." In case they didn't know. Forbidden.

That can be bad because people do stupid things when they're in love."
Cosgrach nodded at her. "That's why it's very dangerous." Good thing they all seemed to know that.

Cosgrach checked the blackboard to see if it had recorded everything.

  • The duration of the effects (usually up to 24 hours) vary depending on factors such as the weight of the person drinking the potion and the attractiveness of the person with whom the potion is supposed to make the drinker obsessed. The effects wear off naturally over time, but can be renewed by administering further doses of potion. Therefore, there is no overdose.
  • The effect is near instantaneous: the drinker appears "pale and sickly" and becomes obsessed with the brewer or the first person seen and excited or dangerously unstable towards others.
  • A hate potion can cancel out love potions and vice versa. There is also a proper antidote.
  • The brewer doesn't have to be present for the effect if it's that sort of love potion.
  • The drinker does not forget what he or she did while under its influence.
  • Love potions mature over time; so the longer it is kept, the stronger it will be.
  • Amortentia's characteristics are a distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen and spiral steams. Its aroma is different for everyone and reminds each person of the things that they find most attractive, even if they don't acknowledge or are unaware of their fondness themselves.
  • The smell of Amortentia can change as you see new things and people.
  • Life advice from Blaise Bellaire: You should NEVER give a love potion to a girl who's bigger than you and throws a harder punch 'cause when it wears off she'll remember everything and beat the living Circe out of you. It causes strong dislike after.
All seemed to be in order... and he waited for a while for them to finish taking notes. After that, he tapped his wand on the blackboard to reveal the ingredients and first step.

All was clear, right?
