Well, remember that part when he thought this was going to be the easiest assignment in the world? Yeah. He lied. It was probably harder working with Soph who already knew him both inside and out. Heck, sometimes Zander even though Sophie Brown knew him better than he knew himself.
That's what would make this hard. Granted, it probably wouldn't have been easy saying all that deep stuff to a stranger. Which is why it was nice that he got to tell Sophie who he was already 100% comfortable with. But while she thought, Zander took the time to think too. Even slumping down and sitting next to her against the statue.
And when she finally had something, Zander looked over at her waiting. Out of all the things she could've possibly said, this one was probably most surprising for Zander. Crying? How come she didn't tell him that? ... Zander knew it was a really tough term for her and that things with Toby and Evie and well... He just didn't realized that she'd been crying over it.
He felt his heart sink a little bit as he gave her a worried look, especially now that she was laughing. "I'm sorry, Soph I--" But before he could say much else he was handed the flashcard and told it was his turn to go. "Y'know, I'm always here for you, right?" Before looking down and reading over the first question again. Merlin. What could he possibly say? Eeeeeeerrrrr.... "Um," he mussed his hair in thought. "I never really remembered my dreams all too well... But ever since Fifth Year, I've had constant nightmares where I'm back in the forbidden forrest with Aegis and Gregoire... It's always the same one, too... And I always wake up at the same part, in a mess of sweat." Actually he hadn't told anyone about the nightmares. It was embarrassing. And he was also trying to suppress memories of that night. "They've er, gotten a lot better though," y'know, just so she wasn't worried or anything. They had stopped being frequent nightmares. Maybe it had something to do with what that Truebridge kid said, but who knows.
Anyways. "Your go," This next one would be so much easier for her too. She didn't need his sympathy nor his pity, so when he reacted with concern, Soph just laughed a bit more and gave a nonchalant, carefree shrug like it was totally no big deal. Because it was no big deal. Obviously. Not a big deal at all. She was fine. She could handle this. There was nothing Sophie Brown couldn't handle.
...Right?
She nodded her silent understanding at him always being there for her because that's what best friends and boyfriends were for, but she was grateful that he did go on to work on sharing his personal thing, too, as it provided a nice distraction. She also understood how hard it was to come up with something worthwhile, so while he thought about it and filled the time with an "um" and hair-ruffling, Soph shifted in her position so she was leaning against him a little, comfortably giving him her attention.
But what he decided to say was... not anything she was expecting at all, and her face fell, and a haunting chill ran through her. She... knew, of course, that he still felt plagued by those forest events, but... she had no idea he had nightmares from it. Regularly, at that. They'd... gotten better? But still not better enough for him to not have them, and she could SEE that this still bothered him a lot.
Quietly, barely audible, Soph replied, "I love you." She gave his arm an encouraging squeeze, and she wanted to spend more time on the topic... but he was handing the card back to her, just as that first question they'd fulfilled disappeared.
All right, then. They would... come back to Zander's nightmares later. Yes.
...An impression? Soph giggled, straightening up a little and smoothing back her hair before deepening her voice and mimicking with vigor, "I'm no teddy bear! I'm the dragon of the dungeons!" Then she siiiiiighed dramatically and lowered her voice, "The truth is, Mr. Adair, I want everyone to fear me, to think I'm so big and scary, but underneath, deep down, my deeeeep, dark secret is that I'm really soft and squishy inside. I love my students and just want them to do well in my class and realize their full potential and love themselves almost as much as they love me." She perked back up. "And you know that Sophie Brown? She is my FAVORITE and BEST and MOST INGENIOUS student of all time. I'm so blessed to have someone as brilliant as her in my class." And then she put her hand on her tummy, "Ugh," she grunted, "m'HUNGRY, ADAIR. Go fetch me a steak as big as my ego!"
...And then she giggled again, settling back down beside Zander, her head on his shoulder, and offered him the card. "Spitting image of him, right?" HEHEHE.
