Which Pet is best for YOU?
by Eden McGee

So maybe you’re feeling a little lonely. Maybe you just need a snuggle bug after spending all day on homework. Or perhaps your maternal (or paternal, come on, folks) instincts are just KICKING in, and YOU find yourself wanting a pet.

There’s a tiny problem. Which pet is right for YOU?

The thing about pets is that they require work. They’re not something you buy on a whim, decide they’re boring, and toss them aside like trash. Pets are friends! But unlike normal friends, pets can’t take care of themselves (well…okay, maybe we ALL have that friend—no matter!) and need us to provide food, water, a sustainable place to live, comfort, and happiness! Some pets require lots of attention—others, not so much. It’s all about what YOU can afford to give to a pet.

So, like the nice young woman I am, I’ve compiled a list of pets appropriate for Hogwarts that you might consider. We’re allowed, here at this lovely castle under the merciful dictatorship leadership of the ever-beautiful Headmistress Truebridge, any one of these five pets: cats, owls, toads, rats, or pet rocks.

I made this chart for you lovely readers to take a look at, see if any of these pets are a fit for you!

Cats are really great, right? Sassy, fun, and they tend to catch their own food. The thing about CATS is that they DO require a good bit of attention from their owners. Rats are bit adventurous, but they are very sweet and like cuddles and play time and can be just as time consuming as cats. Toads keep to themselves for the most part. Owls are VERY self sufficient—and pet ROCKS are probably the easiest of the pets to care for.

Our VERY own Airey Flamsteed says of HIS pet preferences, “I had a toad as a student. Was about the only pet I could stand to own because the creatures do not possess fur and claws...so when I stumbled upon Pebbles in a muggle hobby shop just before I left to work at NASA I was blown away by muggle innovation once again. A pet that comes pre-trained to sit and stay...and it totally obedient. What ISN'T to like?!” So, see? Toad—AND a pet rock?!

The chart I’ve included is just the tip of the pet-care iceberg! Do some research on what you want! This is just a little guide on your way to getting the perfect pet fit for you! Hope this helps! Our library here at Hogwarts is chalk-full books on all sorts of animals, too! So check it out, have fun, and be responsible!
