As Professor Quigley continued talking, Ollie wrote down nearly everything he was saying to the class. He wasn't sure how using a shrinking charm was cooler than just fighting the thing that was attacking him, but he figured professors knew best and wasn't going to argue it. Now Ollie had to figure out if he wanted to speak up again seeing as answering the question before didn't do him any good at all.

Giving in, and coming up with an okay answer, he raised his hand once again and said, "Well, if you're moving, you could shrink all of the really big furniture, right? Then you could just pick it up and set it where you want?" He was pretty sure that's what his mum and Jon had done when they'd moved to Scotland but he never actually saw anything happen. He just knew that everything was somehow moved from one place to another. Surely his answer made sense.

Probably wrong but, oh well. Or too obvious.

This was one of the more effective usages for the spell. Moving things from one place to the other without breaking your back or having to put too much effort into it; both very compelling reasons to give this nifty little charm a try. "There are a lot of people who use this spell for this purpose. Anything from an exceptionally large display piece to the entire house if you like--not the house itself per say...that would take a bit more but everything in the house, yes. Perfect for moving."

He liked that they managed to stay on target this time around though he wasn't naive enough to think there wouldn't be a few OUT THERE answers heading his way.

Children had a way of surprising you like that. "Makes things portable." To put it simply.

Diminuendo. It wasn't primarily Latin...No, this one was Italian in origin. To diminish.....Gabe liked Thornton's answer best about managing large objects. Kace mentioned something that inspired a thought. They could possibly shrink people suffering from malnutrition and starvation and economies wouldn't take nearly as much of a hit in caring for them.....Food and supplies would go farther, essentially. And this inspired further thought about what uses it could have in the potions field...

Buuuuuut, he still wasn't speaking up...So, Gabe was just going to listen to everyone...and write down the ideas he liked best in his notes.

She had a few examples come to mind, but none were appropriate - Fuller would've appreciated them, she knew, but Quigley? Naw, she wasn't ready to test her luck with him just yet. So she continued to blend in with everyone and stay invisible and stick to just note-taking for now, yep.

It wasn't his fault, it really probably wasn't his fault at all, but that didn't stop the Professor's eyes from lingering on these students for a little longer. With the exception of Mister Toussaint, he was starting to wonder if it was the room, or the topic being discussed or him just being SO interesting that they felt they had to sit and silently take notes.

Whatever the case was...it was starting to spook him a little. They could talk right? It wasn't like some...kind of thing that would make him look insensitive for not knowing?

Right then. He would...just continue thinking they had nothing to add at present.

Even with food, he still had to question the logic of these students. "Shrinking the food is another use, sure...but again, why not extend the pockets of your robes or whatever you're carrying off the food in?" That seemed to be the easier route. "You'd have to un-shrink the food after instead of pulling it from your pockets or wherever and enjoying as is."

It wasn't to say they were wrong, just that they were taking the long way around a short mountain if they caught what he was trying to say.

SPOILER!!: Pranks

Was it a coincidence or just genetics that had these two both thinking the spell could be used at the misfortune of others? Of course they were right, the use existed but wow, how uncanny. "I'm not sure the roach would have the desired effect." He said, first looking to the one that had asked about the unicorn. "If it's so small they won't notice then it wouldn't bother them too much unless you went right out and told the person they'd just swallowed a roach you shrunk." Sounded like how you got caught. Not a good idea.

"Trying to kill people is no better." Look for the other sister. "And it's more likely to hurt them than scare them if it's suddenly made larger as it would likely throw them off the seat." Then she would have some explaining to do. Hopefully not in his class, he didn't want to have to deal with it. Eh. No thanks.

Miss Xanthopoulos seemed right in line with them as well. Shrinking seats and umbrellas? Why were these children so mean?? Circe help them. "A fair point Miss Xanthopoulos." Had he said it right?

SPOILER!!: Evie

"I believe the spell you're referring to, Miss Shacklebolt, is the Reductor Curse, unless you mean to reference the shrinking charm 'reducio'?" He...wasn't actually sure which she meant and wasn't REALLY trying to assume but, "In the case of the first, it doesn't have the effect we're looking for but with the latter I'd like you to note that it's a counter-charm that shrinks what engorgio has enlarged, while this spell ," he nodded toward the board, "forces objects into a smaller size regardless of whether or not they'd first been enlarged."

Did that make it any clearer? Could be she wasn't confused in the first place. Well then.

"Excellent, Miss Guidry." He said with a nod and a munch of his apple. Bonsai making could be achieved by shrinking the plant. Though he was almost sure some plants were naturally that small. Were they? Merlin, he didn't think he cared enough to find out.

Huh, would you look at that, kid was happy he'd found a new way to get himself and his classmates killed--because Hogwarts didn't have enough of those as it is. Of course. Maddox simply shook his head as the boy adopted a smug expression. Eh, let him have it. No need for bubble popping.

Blink.

Why did that hypothetical situation sound so well thought out? Did he want to know? Not truly but he would say this. "I do hope you sold the duplicate," Assuming this actually happened and why not? Hogwarts bred a different kind of crazy. "as that's the one that will vanish after some time and your grandmother won't be pleased to find she's short of a clock that valuable." But it was none of his business. Moving on.

Ah...so that's what he meant...good to know because for a second there, the man thought the boy had perfected a new skill. If that was the case, he would hope the Prefect would have spent his time on something more worthwhile. Anywho, the incantation.

"Yes, thank you." He looked to the rest of the class. "As stated by Mister Rehman, the incantation is as written here; Diminuendo." Now to hope someone offered the wand movement.

"Most definitely, Miss Malone." He confirmed before another crunch of his apple. "This charm forces any object--person included--into a smaller state so you could shrink your dormmate," Not that he was trying to give ideas, ahem, "your housemate, yourself, your pet." And so on and so on. She just the gist, yeah?

Good, they could move on.

Hmmm..."Hiding is another use of this spell, yes." One he'd used once or twice. "Smaller target for the eyes to land on, more places you can stuff it when no one's looking." This one was on a roll today.

SPOILER!!: Eden

His mouth opened...then closed...then opened again but for the first few moments no words would come. What in Merlin's beard would you be doing getting shot by an arrow in the first place, was the question he desperately wanted to ask but it was best he provide an answer...

"It would still need removing Miss McGee, otherwise it will eventually return to its usual size leaving one to search around in the wound for said arrow, unless you haven't made it splinter small in which case there is still the problem of having to rip it out."

Painful, he knew. There was a lesson to be learned here. Don't get shot by arrows.

What in Merlin's beard.....?

Z-Dawg VonFarts Skittles the First....? Once again he would have to look to the list on his desk. At this point, the only name unaccounted for was a 'Zahra Kettleburn'. Huh, wonder if she was related to the Minister. Anywho, he reached for the quill on his desk and crossed that name out, replacing it with the one on her name tag. Kid could be WHOEVER she wanted to be. It was no skin off his back.

Maddox actually smirked at her question. Funny how he'd wondered if someone would ask it. "As it so happens Miss VonFarts Skittles, you can shrink big heads. The ego though...will require a different charm altogether." Say the de-pantings charm for instance....but, naturally, he wouldn't go suggesting it. That would make him accountable for her actions and he just wasn't ready for that kind of committment.

SPOILER!!: Toby

"Thank you for the clarification Mister Tempus." Though why it mattered, he didn't truly know. He'd stand up for the kid, good for him, good for the kid too, Maddox supposed but what he was interested in at the moment was the answer to the next question. Thankfully it wasn't long in coming.

Uh-huh................"Interesting...." Fairy furniture? Something else he didn't want to know about. Nope. What they taught her outside of Charms was none of his business. "Very interesting..." Might have been getting looks too. Consider him confused.

Right on the nail, this one. "Very Good, Miss Holiday." Someone had done some reading...or was bloody good at guessing "The charm does make an object or person smaller." Still no wand movement though. He would have to give that one himself.

Uh......"Sure." That was a really tedious way of going about it when you had spells like 'diffindo' hanging around but...yeah. "Do keep in mind however that the object maintains its proportion so the grass would no longer be covering the entire lawn because you've shrunken it. Same with the hair, it would only cover a portion of your head and you'd look ridiculous."

Maddoz smiled, a genuine but knowing sort of smile as it were though he wouldn't be saying why. They would all figure that out on their own later. "Thank you, Miss Burton."

The smile dropped as he looked to the Gryffindor Prefect who still needed to redeem himself. Did he think the badge would get him an automatic pass? Shame.

"This is true, Mister Adair." Lookit him using that thing inside his skull. "However you neglect that I'd have to make the apples big again before consuming them." And he was lazy as hell. How had the boy missed that part? He didn't want extra work and besides, the fluffy pillow in the far corner of his office was meant for naps, his table, not so much, not when there were better options.

At first, it didn't occur to him that the girl had been muttering, in light of his accute hearing (one of his only blessings after the animagus training went south). "And if the allergies are bother you so much, the Healer really isn't that far away." He was almost insisting now.

Wow, another one right on the mark, however for a slightly different reason. "I like the way you think, Mister Rogers." Except for when he was climbing things and jumping onto attackers. The boy still hadn't answered him on that bit but he would let it go considering he had a class to get through teaching.

...He would be making a mental note to stay far away from this one when in cat form. She sounded like the dangerous kind of kid cuddler, the type that squeezes and insists it's out of LOVE. "Er...yes. Very good Miss Kittredge." If not somewhat horrifying. Merlin.

More deadpanning was happening here. Death was NOT meant to be a thing in this class. He didn't particularly care what happened after they left the room but Merlin NOT IN HERE.

He found himself relaxing some at her answer however. It was a good distraction from the earlier discussion and it made him chuckle. Zahra. That was VonFarts Skittles, yes? Who knew the girl was a bully. "I can't tell you it's perfectly fine to shrink your classmates and keep them in jars Miss Wojack...though I would hope you'd feed her and poke enough holes in the event this should happen far away from my supervision." Where he couldn't be held accountable.

Er....."I wouldn't recommend it, Mister Gardener. The charm would cause the entire limb to shrink, not only the swelling and you would still be left with the trouble of having to bring down the swelling and return the leg to a normal size. Best stick to a potion to reduce the swelling before working through any damages." And seeing as this wasn't potions class, they could move on, yes?

"But couldn't the individual open the door while still a human before transforming into the their animal form and going through it?" That was probably the only question he had for this one. It was perfectly possible to shrink a door but if someone wanted to go through it, he couldn't think of many things that would get in the way of that.

His eyebrows rose high at the words of this one. A dictionary? Seriously? "I do not care to know the meaning of the word Mister Scabior. Whatever arrangements you've made with Mister Tempus are between you two and of very little interest to me. What DOES interest me is your apparent lack of attention to the most grossly obvious of details."

What was he talking about? Let's see. Maddox turned to face the board with an exaggerated patience, staring plainly at the word 'Diminuendo' that the chalk had scribbled before he asked that second question. "I believe that is the spell the rest of us have been talking about. Do you need to move to a seat closer to the board or should the chalk have written on the wall to ensure there was enough room to make it big enough?"

If you're going to be a snot nosed know-it-all, at least do it right. MER-LIN.

"Those are not spells Mister Woods." Maddox explained carefully to the obviously confused First Year. This was not the choir and they were not discussing music. Where....how...why....?

Nope, he didn't want to know, he would simply move on with the discussion. "But yes, shrinking the trunks could prove to be a brilliant way to avoid all the unwanted attention they tend to bring." Not half bad, when he wasn't mistaking charms class for the orchestra.

"That could also prove helpful, yes." Merlin knew some of those books had hit some ridiculous sizes. He wouldn't be lugging them around, that's for sure, not unless he made them more manageable and less tiring. Very good point Mister Weller.

"Right, so let's get into it. For the benefit of Mister Scabior, I'll reiterate that the spell we'll be looking at today is Diminuendo. As Mister Rehman rightly said, the incantation is 'Diminuendo' however I don't think anyone mentioned the wand movement. That is a simple point at the target you wish to make smaller." He paused, waiting for the chalk to add that bit to the board as well.

Wait was this apple gone as well? Sigh. The Professor grabbed for a third but didn't bite into it just yet. What were they waiting for? The jars wouldn't float down to them like the name tags had. "Questions before we move on?" Might as well before getting into it.

Okay nevermind, don't listen to my time stamps because clearly I fail at posting when I say I will, gosh. Ahem, so I'll be tentatively posting again sometime around maybe 6pm GMT -5 but we all see how well this predicting time goes.
