Although he had a THING with the term....stuff. Stuff was rather vague and astronomy was a precise science. Quote:

And that's kinda conceited, so with Astronomy we study the stuff around Earth that we don't really have any role in like the stars and other planets, mostly 'cause we wanna seem less conceited, and then after we do that sometimes we also study Earth stuff." Right? Right? Kyroh stuck the name tag on his shirt. "I figure, we study it, so we feel better about always studying things that humans play a big role in." Star Trek knowledge common sense? Airey could only dream of a world where that was true. Unless that wasn't what the second year was referring to...in which case it should be common sense. Right? Right.
He gave Mr. Scabior an approving salute before addressing his response.
Which was...an amusing one.
Study astronomy to seem less conceited with ourselves. Some would argue it the other way around, but interesting sentiments nonetheless. "Very interesting thought process," he chuckled. "Very interesting indeed."
And was giving him ideas for a possible extra credit essay topic for homework. HMMMM... Quote:

He’d leave the task to…maybe Cutty, or Simon. Those dudes know their Astro stuff more than he does. Or maybe the First Years? He could see the gears in the young man's head turning. The attentive listening was always appreciated. Quote:

And also because there are a bunch of other planets and things and when you learn about other planets and why they do all the stuff they do, you can learn more about the stuff Earth does." She took a breath and nodded to herself before adding, "Plus it's cool!" Had she already said that? Oh, well. It could qualify as double-cool. Stuff. There was that word again. It should be a forbidden word in his classroom. Stuff. Force students to use proper terminology and stretch their minds.
But the Hufflepuff had an excellent little addition to what Mr. Scabior had said - studying celestial bodies to make humanity seem less egotistical and what not. "Excellent, Miss Kittredge." Especially on the cool and awesome usage.
What was that about being conceited? Heh. Quote:

Yeah, she knew she had started to mumble a bit. Maybe watching Star Wars with her nephew was doing something to her perception. Something good. Eden would just have to accept her horrible handwriting?
She played with Clara's hair a bit, admiring the red-SHINYness of it...kind of absentmindedly, before she glanced up. "Oh..yeah...we'll see about the...whole wand thing...I'm baaaad at magic--" she whispered, as the professor closed his comic. "He's reading Star Trek--I already think he's cool--" she nodded knowingly before leaning back in her chair. She had more to say but he said they had to be quiet. So..yeah. She didn't want to get YELLED at.
OKAY so the man was speaking now. She also tried not to worry too much about Layla...she didn't want the girl to FEEL bad. SIGH. Eden could never remember caring so much about people before coming here--what the heck had happened?!
She PUSHED it to the back of her mind--and glanced at the nametag thingies. Right. So she had to use her wand. This would be HORRIBLE fun. She pulled out her wand and just...liiiightly tapped the nametag. "Eden McGee..." she said, and her name appeared like....wait for it...MAGIIIIIIC. Eden smiled to herself and set her wand down next to her notebook and nudged Clara, cocking her eyebrows like, SEEE I DID IT! before thinking about the question at hand.
Astronomy. What was....Astronomy. It sounded like...a sort of Italian food to Eden, but she wouldn't dare say it aloud. NO. Eden was NOT the student to bring the lulz--she would rather be kind of correct, considering she was supposed to be smart and stuff. "Uuuumm--" What was she going to SAY? UGH. "Well--Star Trek kiiiind of has to do with Astronomy? Since space and stuff--" yes. This was Eden's brilliant attempt at adding something to the discussion. Quote:

"And don't worry," she said, watching as Eden played with her hair, "I'll help you with the magic part as much as possible." Not that she really thought she'd need it. She was willing to bet that Eden was just unsure of her own abilities and was actually great.
NOW TO FOCUS ON THE PROFESSOR AND LESSON THINGS. Judging. He seemed nice enough, despite not picking up on her slight sarcasm about the seating arrangement. She couldn't imagine a worse classroom layout. To be fair to him, though, she hadn't really said it in a sarcastic tone as she'd first intended to. She gave him a warm smile and an indifferent"mhmmm," before waiting for him to get started with the lesson part of the lesson.
That was what she'd come for, after all.
Heh. Name tags.
That seemed fairly straight forward to her. She'd completed much more difficult magic than that while she'd attended Hogwarts, so this was a piece of cake. Grinning over at Eden, she took out her wand and picked up the empty name tag. She did exactly as Professor Airey had instructed, tapping the name tag firmly before saying, "Clara Wilde," loud and clear. It worked and her name appeared on the name tag in golden lettering. Thinking about it for a second, she was actually quite surprised that her surname had been spelt correctly, and curious about why that was. It sounded like 'wild,' so she was pleasantly surprised that it hadn't been spelt that way.
The redhead looked up when Eden nudged her, eyes shining with a pride for her friend that said 'See? I knew you could do it!' It wasn't particularly difficult magic, but every little bit counts where confidence is concerned. With one last little nudge, Clara once again focused her words on the teacher, ignoring the vast amount of other people in the room.
Astronomy. Hm. "Astronomy is a scientific subject. It looks at the physical universe as a whole and often focusses on celestial objects, like planets, stars and things like that," she said after raising her hand. Not exactly the text book answer, but near enough. That was what she understood Astronomy as; the study of things not of Earth. Before she could chime up to give the second part of her answer, she'd frozen ...
.... Suddenly all the people in the room seemed to get infinitely LOUDER ... and much closer to her than before ...
At least, that's what it felt like .....
.. Clara gripped the edge of the desk for support ... shooting a panicked look at Eden, before squeezing her eyes tight shut and trying to focus her breathing. Calm down, calm down, calm down.
....... butshecouldn't ... Quote:

And then she felt that.
The tension-next to her--She shot a glance at Clara and noticed her friend had her eyes closed and she was FREAKING OUT. Okay. Stay calm, Eden. Don't make a SCENE, Eden. She just put a hand on Clara's back and scooted closer--ahem. She didn't want to talk--but--MEHHHHHH. She didn't want to lose pooooints--but Clara being okay was waaaay WAY more important. The redhead looked around frantically, trying to avoid eye contact, but trying to look for something ... something to calm her down, but she .... had no idea what. If Eden couldn't do it ... what could? And ... she couldn't just leave ... surely she would get in trouble. That being said, she didn't think she could move ... she felt rooted to her spot and .... her sight was going blurry ........
... Her lungs felt crushed and ... black dots appeared in her vision ......
The professor didn't have time to respond to the two girl's answers, both excellent for the record, before strange things began happening. Sweet solstice why was it always the Ravenclaw females who...did this sort of thing? Furthermore, why had he not figured out a way to deal with said panicked looks?
Bedside manner of a Vulcan.
Taking a few casual strides towards the pair so as not to draw too much attention, he leaned over just enough to his right - balancing on his right foot with his left hovering slightly in the air - to whisper to them. "Miss McGee, Miss Wilde. You both may be temporarily excused if necessary."
To the ladies room perhaps? Girls still did that, yeah? Go to the loo in small groups. Quote:

And still no bouncing. Stellar. The promise of pogo!
Oh, another very insightful little answer! Airey stopped right where he stood - about the middle of the semi circle - and gave Mr. Tempus a loud golf clap. "STELLAR, Mr. Tempus. Absolutely STELLAR!" He paused just long enough to scurry forward from where he stood to LEAP onto the Hufflepuff's desk. "This is something that the study of astronomy does in so many different ways from human interest level you speak of to the atoms that make up our being. Take 2 points for that answer." Quote:

He didn't know any of the fancy sciency terms though. And he was still mad about the tag. So that's all he could give on the subject for now. Okay, time to jump off Mr. Tempus' desk.
Also time to try not to laugh at Mr. Adair's name tag. Which he only somewhat succeeded in doing. "Not to worry, Mr. My Name's. Simply give it another tap while saying Vaco Reverto and you can give it another go."
The Gryffindor got two thumbs up for his answer. Quote:

Airey gave an appreciative nod towards Miss Carrington. "Some of the most beautiful sights in the universe exist out there in space and it is only through human's curiosity manifested in the study of astronomy that we have discovered them." Quote:

"Perfectly alright not to know, Mr. Foster. Hopefully by the end of this discussion you will have more of an idea as to why," he winked. After all, there really wasn't just ONE answer to his question. Quote:

Shaking his head to refocus again on her chin the astronomer failed to respond to her answer and instead simply said, "Interesting beard." Quote:

Airey both wanted her to elaborate and not at the same time for fear of the Gryffindor proving his suspicion that she had confused his subject for another. One that was NOT a science by any stretch of the imagination.
"Good, Miss ........... Wolfworesworth," he said, completely butchering her last name. Not on purpose, of course. But butchering it nonetheless. "One must be careful with what one means by....interpret, however. Astrology is not, and never will be, Astronomy for example."

Alright, that was it. He was fixing his classroom rules to say that stuff was taboo. Oh, maybe he could make it like a little hex of sorts...like how Voldemort had done with his name. Slight modification of the Taboo curse...
The professor tapped his chin thoughtfully and nearly tuned out the rest of her answer. "Ah, yes, good Miss Samson." SPOILER!!: Zeke Quote:

But more important things. Like that contraption. It looked cool. He couldn't however, follow what Professor Airey was saying. Amilitarywhatnow? "Uh huhhhhh..." he mused thoughtfully, "so it's basically a fancy model of the solar system?" he asked, wondering out loud. Comprehension wasn't his strong suit, but he did alright most of the time. It was a shame they wouldn't be using it today, but ... Professor Airey didn't explicitly say he COULDN'T touch it. Ahem. "Thank you, sir," he added as an after thought, before deciding he too should sit and prepare for the lesson.
He opted to sit with Gwen, she was a familiar face, and at least they'd both be starting all this stuff from scratch. No point sitting with a fifth year now was there? "Hey Gwen, mind if I sit here?" he asked, but sitting regardless of what her response was. Hehe. Zeke started unpacking his supplies. Ink, quill, parchment, his wand was tucked into his fancy pants holster out of sight, but he pulled that out too and rest it on the table in front of him.. and before he knew it, it really was time for the lesson to start.
The introductions were fairly straight forward, but it made him gulp. GULP! Hadn't he called him SIR just moments before? WHOOOOPSYDAISY! Still, he was alive, so it couldn't be too bad an error. He'd have probably continued stewing over it a little longer, had it not been for the distribution of blank name tags. This. Was. So. Cool. Omg. NASA! "This is my favourite class so far," he whispered to Gwen before directing his attention back to the front and following the instructions provided. He took his wand in his hand, and thinking his name before speaking it, he tapped the tag, "Zeke."
It worked. IT WORKED!..... That was his first real successful bit of magic. Awesome.
Of course, the first question of the lesson had him stumped... like REALLY stumped. What was Astronomy good for? WHY study it? Zeke pinned his tag to his chest and raised his hand. "Eeerr... well, Professor Airey," not sir, see, no sir this time, "it means a little to me, but probably not as much as it should?" He had no idea where he was going with this really. "I use it as a navigation tool, you know, constellations and what not for when I'm exploring, but that aside I don't know why we'd really study it. Except, maybe to get a better understanding of the space we live in ... and not just ON EARTH, obviously, it's more like... a GIANT ecosystem, biome, thing, like how life on earth can't exist without the sun, and the moon effects water and stuff, so perhaps we have that same effect on another planet, and so on?" Ahem. Or something like that. Cue grin. Was he at least half right?
Right then, Mr. Zeke it would be. Which would save the astronomer the image of the first year wearing cardigans and singing about it being a lovely day in the neighborhood. Just some classic muggle American television thoughts.
Ahem.
AND LOOK AT THAT STELLAR ANSWER! Save for that very first sentence because Airey also had no idea what the young man meant by that. BUT AN EXCELLENT ANSWER! AND WHEN THE ASTRONUT WAS EXCITED HE... "NAVIGATION AND ONE GIANT COSMIC ECOSYSTEM!" Wooooooooooo flailing arms above his head as he stood on Mr. Zeke's desk. WOOOOOOOOOOO! "Outstanding, Mr. Zeke. Take 4 points for that answer!" Quote:

Still standing on Mr. Zeke's desk, Airey did some dramatic pointing towards Mr. Mordaunt. DRAMATIC pointing. "Outside of magical means. YES! Stellar! Take a point for that."
He was a little sensitive to astronomy being overshadowed by the magically based subjects. MAGIC magic that is. Science was it own variation of magic, after all. Quote:

And he was off Mr. Zeke's desk now, by the way. Quote:

"I mean are science and magic always incompatible? Mutually exclusive like?"
It was too early for questions. Damn him. Oh, Mr. Mordaunt wasn't done just yet. Airey took a few steps backwards to stand in front of the Slytherin again. "A very good question, Mr. Mordaunt. One that the wizarding community can be divided over at times. Naturally, there are many connections between astronomy and magic. Werewolves being an example, and the influence of the moon on potion brewing - much like it has an influence over the tides. There is also research being done, and students participated in several terms ago, on the effects of solar and lunar eclipses on different categories of spells. To say that science and magic are incompatible is a bit too generic and frankly naive. I strongly believe that as science allows humanity to look back further and further into the creation of the universe, that we may discover the very point in time that the molecules and atoms that made magic possible will be discovered. However, at this point in time this discovery has yet to be made."
His eyes flickered over to Miss Wisteria. Perhaps a discovering that was just over the horizon?
"Take another point, Mr. Mordaunt."
And another essay topic popped into existence. Merlin students made it so easy to assign homework! Quote:

Oh, well, listening to her answer was a good place to start. Yes.

It was quite an ominous term, wasn't it? Ominous but spot on at the same time. He gave the Hufflepuff prefect an appreciative salute before moving on to the next raised hand. SPOILER!!: Alexa Quote:

See what a considerate best friend she was? Even in her moment of utter excitement, still had to take certain things into consideration.
Speaking of consideration....excellent question!
Lex's hand flew up, even before she thought to fiddle with the name tags (YOU ALREADY KNOW US AIREY). "Astronomy is a logical reprieve from the absurd and it's unbelievably and undeniably important as a study because without it you'd have people who think they can actually prove Astrology to be true and and use the stars and planets aligning for all the great ills in this world without the basic understanding of science and the fact that it's not that serious and it's not likely the star lining up with the moon's fault." After that Divination lesson, it felt good to get that off her chest. Knowledge. She had it. "That's why we study Astronomy, for a firm foot to stand on when we correct those less endowed with knowledge than ourselves." Prove the idiots wrong. Yup.
That being said, Alexa lifted the blank name tag. "Would you be offended if I didn't wear this? Reckon I'd be offended if you didn't remember my name." Juuuust saying.
Airey was.............................flabbergasted. And perhaps a little in awe. And may have looked a bit sparkly eyed with his chest puffed out in admiration if he were the sentimental sort. The reality was, however, that he just stood there in front of the Head Girl for a good solid minute in complete awe at the words that had just been spoken. Not just the words, but the VOLUME of words that had just been spoken. He quite literally was speechless, in a good way, and found that he only could speak when she mentioned the name tag.
"HUH?" he said, mouth still hanging open slightly. "OH. That. No, I suppose it is not mandatory, just be sure not to lose it because I will be needing to send those off to a colleague of mine for security clearance." Quote:

"It's important to study because you never know when space is just going to shoot a meteor your way or swallow up your planet into a black hole, plus it's interesting and kind of scary at the same time because it's so BIG," he added.
Also aliens.
But he wouldn't say that. People wouldn't take him seriously. The vein in Airey's forehead was definitely starting to bulge now. STUFF.
"Good, Mr. Newell. Good good good. Big and ever expanding!" STUFF SPOILER!!: Phoenix & Gary XD Quote:

He pinned the embellished Phoenix tag to the front of his glittered robes and looked around.

People were answering a question? He hadn't heard a question... what was going on? Oh no... he was behind already. He looked at each person as they answered the question, his peacock feather quill dangling from between his fingers.
...........
Nope. He had no idea... So for once in his life he stayed quiet.
It was really bizarre being in a classroom with other people. He was a little shellshocked actually. Quote:

He was bored and he didn't want to be in class...instead he wished he were out right now doing...stuff.
Rather lazily, he scribbled a name tag for himself just to look like he was following the lesson and placed it on his desk where it could be seen easily not wanting a stupid piece of paper on himself. Then he returned to staring at people.. ...until he saw him. Was it his eyes or did this boy really had something on his robe? It looked shiny...or not, Gareth couldn't be sure. Oh...he had such a nice quill. Being a collector of quills, Gary knew he had to steal that one. But the guy was sitting away from him. What to do then? It could be simple.
Tearing a large piece of parchment, the Slytherin boy crumbled it into a kind of hard paper ball and aiming carefully, shot it at the head of the boy with shiny robes. Quote:

He pulled the rolled up bit of paper out of his curls, doodled a snake with a smiley face on it, and threw it back at the boy. Then...
WAIT! LESSON! "Astronomy's super cool, sir. Cause the galaxy is like, totally gorgeous and sparkly and there's all this stuff nobody knows about and you can space travel and all that but like, it has all this extra meaning as well, y'know? Like with magic and stuff and mapping the stars. It's dead awesome and stuff cause it's kinda futuristic and kinda like the past at the same time cause it's always been there so... yeah."
Airey was....distracted when his eyes fell on Mr. Toros' robes. How in Merlin's soggy socks had he not noticed the...adjustments before? It was...well....it wasn't BAD per say, but uniforms were UNIform for a reason. Imagine if astronauts had decided to customize their spacesuits! Sweet solstice the disasters that could occur...
"Mr. Toros...while I always wish to encourage the art of self expression, perhaps you could refrain from doing so with the very threads of your uniform?" Just then, a ball of parchment came out of no where and got stuck right in the boy's mass of hair. 3 POINT SHOT!
"And could you, Mr. Striker, refrain from wasting paper and tossing it at your classmates?" Although he did have to applaud the boy for his good aim. Just in his head because, well, needed to be professional.
And Mr. Toros' answer was as sparkly as his robes. So thumbs up to you, good sir! Quote:

He raised his hand and said, "Erm Professor, my name is spelled with a C and not a K. How do I fix it?" He wasn't surprised his name was unique after all.
Then he thought about the question the professor asked. What does astronomy mean to him. He raised his hand and said, "I think Astronomy is basically summed up as how the planets and moons work in outside our world. They also teach us the practice people had of figuring out the constellations. I mean I wouldn't know any of the stars names without Astronomy.." he shrugged and continued to doodle waiting for others answers. "Give it another tap and say Vaco Reverto to return it to its original state. As long as you visualize your name clearly in your mind, it should appear correct." If it didn't well, oops? Let it be a lesson to the astronomer to not save galleons on the cheaper magical name tags next time?
He gave a small nod to Mr. Lecium's answer. Mmmhmmm, Astronomy was a stellar teaching tool. Heh. Quote:

Very inquisitive and with the out of the box sort of thinking he appreciated. Not to mention she had said Picard was the best. Obviously a great head on her shoulders.
"Excellent, Miss Wojack. I too have always thought that astronomy encouraged human curiosity and the desire to know more." Something that he hoped his own teaching method reflected. Quote:

That and we, as humans, are too curious to just sit and look at things without finding an explanation for it." . "Very good, Miss Wayne," he applauded the prefect with a grin. Boom. Look at that knowledge. Dante knew some things about stuff That was...not a name he was going to call the Slytherin. For the record.
Airey simply raised an eyebrow and cleared his throat before responding to his answer. And chuckled. "It is indeed. Thank you, Mr. Barrington." Quote:

There was also the matter of someone in this class discovering something important and he didn't know about anyone else but Whitty certainly wanted to befriend that person if they were cool enough. Guh.
Hopefully, Professor Flamsteed wouldn't get freaked out since Gabe wasn't looking anywhere but at him. NOPE. He only had eyes for the man... "Space science." Tunnel vision seemed to be helping... Oh, er, staring contest in the middle of a lesson? Airey could play...he supposed. As long as no other students voiced that they felt they were being ignored because he was only locking eyes with the Ravenclaw.
"Yes," he replied, using few words as well and eyes widening as the staring contest began. Quote:

The smidge comment, however, made him smirk. Because it was actually all of them that had a smidge of the universe within each of them.

Satisfied with her answer, the girl lowered her hand and became distracted thinking about other word's etymologies. He pointed excitedly at the Hufflepuff. In the past the astronomer hadn't been as short with the young man, but he wasn't a first year anymore and should know better. Third year and all...third time's the charm? Although the Gryffindor should know by now to not to shout and draw attention to something he was doing wrong.
A smirk then spread across the man's face at the answer the third year had given. But that was all that was done in reply. A smirk. Heh. *****
Looking around to see that there were no more hands raised, Airey returned to the standing in front of his desks and tugged on his suit jacket to look a bit more presentable. The desk jumping had given things a slightly disheveled look that he quickly fixed. There. Now he could continue teaching.
" Your textbook defines astronomy as the branch of science which deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole...but as you have heard from your classmates, astronomy is much more than this series of brief words," he said as he began the brief lecture portion of the discussion. " Astronomy is more of an umbrella term wherein there are various subfields of study, and while many may consider it to be more of a modern science...has in fact been around since the dawn of humankind. We all are descended from astronomers and we all have within us, sometimes hidden quite deep, the innate curiosity to look up to the sky and wonder why."
He trailed off at the end for a moment to gaze longingly out the window at the clear blue sky above the grounds. How could anyone NOT want to study that breathtaking sky and what lay beyond it was...baffling to him. Simply baffling.
" But when we study astronomy, we are not only learning about the universe, or universes, we exist in...but we are learning about ourselves as well and seeing how the very atoms that make up our bodies are a part of the grand design that is the universe. Astronomy connects us all."
Alright..that had become a bit more cheesy than he had intended. What was the point of all this? Oh, yes. There was the thought.
" Now, because universe is ever expanding and many reverse outer space with awe, there is much overlap with the scientific community and pop culture - namely with science fiction." He paused for a moment and gave the blackboard a firm tap to make a series of photographs appear with numbers below them. He PROMISES that there is a reason behind this slight apparently Muggle Studies inspired detour. There was always a method to his madness. *click for a larger view*
" Can anyone identify any of these characters or the film or muggle telebox series they come from? Please just one per person." If not they were more than welcome to venture a guess or observation about what sort of character they could be. OOC: I am SO sorry for the delay guys, but you all gave me so much to respond to so it took more time than I had anticipated! But I wouldn't have it any other way <3 so thank you for your patience.
Class will resume...hopefully in less than 24 hours from the time of this post (more like 19? No promises though!)
