Nigel wondered what he had gotten himself into.
Finding an appropriate master to study under in his upcoming tutelage had been harder that he had originally thought. It seemed they either had an apprentice or had their own idea on what they wanted in their assistant and he currently didn’t fit any of their molds.
Studying in the university library one day, a test looming in the not so distant future, he pushed his troubles to the back of his mind the best he could to try and concentrate on his work. It lasted for a while until the sound of his name broke him from all thoughts of the latest draught he had been focusing on. “Nigel…?” the voice said again and he looked up to see a face that seemed somewhat familiar but he couldn’t ‘t quite place the face. A look of half-confusion gracing his features as he looked at the man who appeared to be a few years older than him. “Yes…may I help you?” “Oh good I remembered the right name,” the stranger replied giving a relieved smile. “Daniel Petrov…I don’t know if you remember me, but you helped me at Hogwarts once…or twice.”
A look of recognition crossed Nigel’s face as the name and description of the last interaction was added to the face that stood before him. Yes he did remember him, even if they hadn’t exactly been friends then just had been like ships passing in the night with the younger man helping the older man with a search in the library. “Aye, now I do though it is a surprise you remembered me,” he admitted, never thinking much of himself in the way of people caring of his existence. It wasn’t as if many people were in his life and giving a great deal of care. “Well surprisingly my memory has improved since we saw each other last,” Daniel stated with a chuckle as he slid into a seat across from the other man. A simply joke referring back to the fact that what he had been assisted with was something he really should never forget. “And when I saw you, I thought it was you but was hesitant to just yell out in uncertainty.” Eying the book in front of the younger man, he looked between it and Nigel. “So you’re a student here now….potions I’m assuming.”
Nigel gave a nod confirming the assumption, not daring to point out it was an obvious choice since his companion had said it so matter-of-factly. He had stated a fact more than guessed this time. “Aye…my second year." “Ah…I remember that time,” Daniel said with a nod, absently thinking back to his own schooling just a couple of years before. “Have you found a master to study with next year?”
Nigel unconsciously groaned at the question before he could even think and catch himself.
Daniel bit back a laugh despite of himself and the seriousness of the situation. “That well, huh?” He asked rhetorically since it was clear to him that it was causing his acquaintance some problems. The groan was only the audible confirmation to the look he had been given that he doubted the reserved younger man was even aware of. “I think it would be easier to brew 10 perfect vials of Felix felicus then it would be for me to find a master at the moment.” Never had a task that involved potions brewing been so…troublesome to the former Ravenclaw and unfortunately it was one of the most important things he needed for him to ever be considered as a reputable and properly trained potioner. Scratch that…the MOST important item. “Maybe I can help,” Daniel remarked breaking the silence that had grown up between them. “Consider it…returning the favor.”
