So it was time for the debate.

Atticus had made his way up to the stage when the time was announced and had quietly taken his seat, mentally trying to get his nerves under control. He could do this. Right? He had done relatively well in the last one...even under the influence of a Babbling Beverage. He couldn't be worse than that, yes? He was actually in his right mind, so he would be better prepared.

With this thought, he continued to smile pleasantly as the first question was asked and his fellow candidates gave their answers.

Quote:
Why do you feel you are more qualified for this position than the other candidates? We want to hear about what sets you apart from the crowd.
It was an interesting question, though certainly not surprising. The wording was what really caught his attention. "More" qualified than the others, it asked, not just whether he was qualified or not. That was interesting. Certainly he had to be more qualified than some, considering not all of the candidates could be elected, but a great number would be, and surely he had to be equally qualified as they were rather than more because they would all be one group working for the same goal, not one particular one being higher over the other.

Just a little side-thought he had as he waited for his time to answer.

That time seemed to be now.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Atticus said, smiling warmly at the audience. "I'm Atticus Aldredge," in case there was anyone who had forgotten or had not been paying attention (it happened to the even the best every so often), "and I am not sure I am 'more' - nor less - qualified than my fellow candidates. 'More qualified' seems rather subjective, after all. What one person considers as 'more qualified' could be seen much differently by another. Indeed, what I think makes me more qualified than someone else does not really matter; what matters is what you, the members of the community who will be affected one way or another by all this, think. In addition, the board itself is less about which member is more qualified to be there than another - it is about working together as a team, regardless of the qualifications a person may or may not have.

"And that is definitely something I can do. I have worked with a variety of people in a number of settings, from my colleagues on a reservation to the team of Department Heads in our great Ministry of Magic. I know how to adapt to and handle different situations that spring up, whether expected or unforeseen, how to listen to others' thoughts and opinions fairly, and when it is best to compromise rather than choose extremes to ensure the best interests of the majority. My work with magical creatures has especially taught me to prepare for the unexpected.

"All this, I believe, sets me apart in a way from the rest."
Other things he could have said would be similar to the majority - a desire to see Hogwarts and its students succeed, previously attending Hogwarts himself and calling it home, etc. All that most of them had in common. But outside of that he had some level of individuality, which he had discussed, and hopefully the audience thought it made him "more qualified" than some, at least. "All this I believe would be an excellent addition to the board and would humbly bring if I am elected.

"Thank you."

Done. That wasn't so bad.
