Folding a piece of parchment, Ella created herself a name tag as instructed and placed it on her desk so it could be seen easily. She smiled a little as she'd added a very small elephant in the corner just cause. What?! She was Ellaphant, after all.
What did Ella already know about Arithmancy? Hmmm. Well it was all about numbers, yeah? Her hand shot up and she waited to be called one. "Professor, Arithmancy is the study of numbers and their magical properties." Text book definition, yup. Quote:

..Oh. Class was starting.
Brushing her thoughts away, Beezus did as they were instructed, taking a parchment and folding it in thirds before neatly scribbling her name on it's side. There. A namestand. Not that it was necessary for the woman though. They've known each other for almost five years now. That must mean she should be more enthusiastic towards numbers now, yea? Sadly, no. She worked with them when required, but as much as she can, she avoided numbers. Those never fail to make her head hurt.
Too much for that.
A question was asked. In response, Beezus raised her hand, "Professor, it deals with numbers," Nuuuuuumbeeeers. "...it's properties, meanings and how it influences a person's life." There were no REAL numbers presented yet. No headache yet. Good. Quote:

Raising her hand, she answered, a bit distracted, "Professor, Arithmancy is study of numbers," nodding towards Beezus, "Yeah, it studies how numbers affect a person's life and behaviour." Quote:

It was warm and really nice... what was there NOT to like about the summer?
Once she was all settled in her seat and class had started, Selina was did as she was told and folded the parchment so that her name was visible for Hadley. Although, she had to admit that she didn't really need to do that. Hadley knew her name... she had just welcomed her into class by name.
But she did it anyway because she was told to and stuff.
Raising her hand, she said, "Arithmancy deals with numbers, ma'am." Right? Quote:

"It can also be used in predicting the future, only with the use of numbers." So why can't they just squeeze Divination AND Arithmancy together? Kat could think of a cool name for it. Divinatmancy? She raised her hand to best describe what Arithmancy meant to her. "Arithmancy is the study and breakdown of numbers and their combinations and orders. It's used to decipher things like personality traits, codes, and even the ways to break curses." She left out the part about her being completely terribly at curse breaking though, and also how cracking codes went completely over her head last year. She had been a first year, yes, and was able to do the simple code deciphering but she had definitely floundered at anything intermediate. She sighed a little at the memory of feeling so lost in a subject. It wasn't a feeling she appreciated. Quote:

If she was going to establish who she was, she wasn’t going to do it halfway, even if she was planning on going back to a pencil for the actual lesson. That and she was hoping that they weren’t going to be starting off where they’d left off last term, since she really didn’t want to have to face acromantulas again this term. The chances that they were going to be tossed into dark mazes filled with scary things were slim, especially with not one but two people sitting in to observe the lesson, but it was still possible. She just didn’t feel like the professor was the type to do that to theme again. She didn’t know that though. Therefore, the opening question of the lesson had made her feel ten million times better, and she raised her hand.
“Arithmancy is the study of numbers, in every way possible. Normally it’s just using numbers to try and figure stuff out about our own lives, or other people’s, but they also can tell us about the nature of curses, or they can be used to pass messages in code,” she answered, before a question came to mind. Based off of a conversation she had had with Patrick over the summer regarding runes, but she had thought of something else. “Can numbers be used kind of like runes, too? As in, can certain numbers, if they’re painted on things, give whatever it is, or give us some sort of advantage?” If they could, maybe they could add numbers into all their little details that were going to make the hideout last forever. Of course, that depended on if Professor Hadley even understood what she was asking. Quote:

Maybe the professor, Hadley, would tell him later.
Picking up a parchment, he quickly wrote down his name, folded it and put it on his desk just like the professor wanted it to be.
Yeah....that looked nice. Once he was done, he focused his attention back on the professor woman. Hmm...what did he know Aritmancy? Not a lot since he had not taken the class before but he had one thing to say ''I know Arithmancy studies the magical properties of numbers. It sometimes might like divination but numbers, but not divination exactly.''
Right? Hadley nodded as she listened to the students speak up with what they knew on the subject; most seemed to offer up that they knew what the definition of the subject was. Which was correct, yes, even if she hadn't directly asked that. Though she had hoped at least some of them knew more than just that it dealt with numbers and was a form of divination. "Yes, Arithmancy is the study of numbers. Yes, it is a form of divination," she confirmed, writing those two things on the board; 'study of numbers' and 'divination'. SPOILER!!: Curse-breaking related answers Quote:

...And then they were being asked about Arithmancy. What IS Arithmancy? Why did the Professors always start out with this? Redundant. "A study of numbers....that is used for things like...Curse-breaking. It's also a form of Divination, if you get technical." And they were, right? Quote:

Now, one fact about Arithmancy? It's boring. No, he wouldn't say that. He always tried to humor Hadley because she WAS his head of house. Plus he'd never intentionally let a teacher know how much he despised their classes, that was just RUDE.
He raised his hand. "Arithmancy can be used to decode riddles or hidden messages," he explained. "Like in that lesson we did last term!" Quote:

Arithmancy is very useful in curse-breaking tasks and decoding messages." Though they wouldn't be doing that this lesson, sadly. Quote:

Anyway, there she was! And there was a question already! Her hand shot up in the air. "There is a lot of calculations and number stuff!" Which she really enjoyed, yeeep! But the rest... she had no idea. "Some require more calculations than others, but yes, this can be true also of Arithmancy," Fina said, amused by Sophie's answer. Quote:

Anyway, the first question was easy peasy. "It's... hard." Only because EVERYONE else was saying numbers. Theo didn't like to be mainstream, nope. Fina bit her lower lip to keep from laughing too hard at Theo's answer. His simple and very blunt answer. "Arithmancy is definitely one of the more challenging subjects here at Hogwarts, yes. It doesn't require fancy wand movements or incantations, but it requires something else. It requires you to think." So basically, if you weren't prepared to think, then you were in the wrong class. The red head already seated, listened as the Professor began with her introduction. Of course the newbies, they needed a welcome. Nessie looked around to see which faces did not look familiar from the previous year. There were quite a few, yet there were also a few faces missing.
But back to Arithmancy. What did she know about it? She raised her hand. "Professor, I know that your Soul Urge Number reveals your inner thoughts and secrets. It tells you what your heart wishes for." She remembered doing these calculations a while back, but the real reason she chose to say this was because of what had been on her mind lately. Still it applied to Arithmancy. So it was good enough, yes? "Soul urge or else sometimes called your Heart's Desire Number, but yes. Very good, Renesmee." Fina nodded at the redhead captain. Quote:

That plan didn't sound very nice.
She gave the Professor a questioning look at the mention of name tags. She already knew her name...was the name tag necessary? Yet another thing she might have question but thought better of so instead she did the name plate making thing and scribbled her name on it. There! Now she definitely wouldn't call her Alexis; horrid name that one.
Ahem. Her hand was raised to answer this question. "It's a subject that involves headaches and long hours spent down in the common room trying to make heads or tails of the homework, resulting in little sleep and an even worse headache."
NOD. Uh what?!
Fina stared at the second year for a moment to make sure she wasn't joking. "Miss Cambridge." Because that answer required use of her surname, not informalness like Alexa. "If you're getting headaches and losing sleep over the homework, then I strongly urge you to seek me out for greater assistance." That went for anyone of course, not simply the second year, but since she brought it up . . . Quote:

Vhat? She said to blend in. When that was done, Erik settled back into his seat and watched to see how the lesson would go.
He always had enjoyed Arithmancy. She gave a subtle smile to Erik at his comment of 'as you vish', and then proceeded to blend in. Good, good. The less she noticed she was be observed, the more accurate the evaluation would be, yes? Quote:

She looked over at that man, the one who seemed to be showing up everywhere. Who kept letting him in anyway? ...and why was he filling out a card?
Anyway...what did Sierra know about Arithmancy? It was boring. She hated it. She thought it was useless. She was ready for class to be over. Yup, that about summed it up. "I know we go through a lot of steps to get some numbers that usually tell us more about our life or our future," she said, raising her hand. "Yes, that is correct." Pity though you couldn't give some examples of those numbers, but oh well. Ah, and it appeared Mr. Vinteren was here to evaluate as well? Interesting. It seemed he was sitting among the students though, but whatever worked for him, Atticus supposed.
And now the lesson was starting. Excellent. Penelope was surprised to see Atticus appearing in this lesson figured she probably should've expected it at some point. And at least it wasn't a class like Charms or Transfiguration so he wouldn't see her fail completely or anything. That was good.
And now it was starting. And they needed to make name tags/stands/things? Okay. Penelope did that fairly quickly, scribbling down her name and then setting it on the corner of her desk.
Now for the question. One thing she knew about Arithmancy?
Her hand went up. "We usually have to pair letters with numbers and then add them together to find out stuff." Yeah, that was about it. "We do, yes. And we can use one of two systems to pair off letters with numbers, which I believe Miss Potter mentioned as using the pythagorean or chaldean number systems." Quote:
Originally Posted by Meizzner Nigel knew that there was a little divination in arithmancy. But before he answered. He should make his little name tag.
Now back to the question "You can predict the future with numbers in arithmancy". Nigel wondered if they had statistic about how well it predicted correctly. This was a math class after all. Magical Math, But Math none the less. "Yes, Arithmancy can be used to predict the future." Which brought her to another point of interest that someone else brought up. What was that Kendall asked? About painting numbers on things. "Miss Quinn brought up a good point; can you paint numbers on things to sort of give that thing the traits associated with that number?" Fina reiterated the question. "Yes. Some Arithmancers do believe strongly in the power of numbers, and that the vibrations associated with that number will bring about good - or sometimes bad - fortunes to the wearer." Perhaps later on in the term they can experiment more with this phenomenon. "The most important step towards beginning to understand Arithmancy is to be able to analyze and interpret people and to be able to draw interpretations and conclusions from various calculations. This is the basics of understanding Arithmancy. Once you can understand how to use numbers towards drawing interpretations from people, then you've accomplished a lot. That and understanding the power behind numbers." "Having said that, what are some of the number calculations used to analyze and interpret people?"
