Chapter 5
It was number of quiet minutes of walking along the deserted village road before Quirinus thought to voice, “Logan, where exactly are we going?”
“Somewhere”
Quirinus noticed Lucy had stopped crying.
“Do you want me to carry her?” He asked, scooping her up from the ground after Logan had given a curt nod and placed her gently down.
A small sniff issued from behind him. He looked over his shoulder and glanced quickly back to the front at the sight of Daniele crying quietly behind him. He supposed the gentlemanly thing to do was hold her hand – comfort her at least. But no. He kept walking on carrying Lucy gently.
“There’s a tavern.” Logan said, “Just a couple more minutes away. We can sleep there and organise what we’re going t do then.” Logan slowed his pace to match Quirinus’ “She wasn’t supposed to be magical.” He said quietly, “Dave hates magic. She had been having these things happening for a while; we covered them up every time though. Either the cat did it, it was trick of light. And so on.” He looked past him, his eyes resting vaguely on his sister, “Daniele and I both knew she was a witch. We both knew the signs. How our own parents had wished we were magical how we could not?” He let out a bitter laugh.
“Is that the tavern?” Quirinus asked, changing the topic suddenly. It was a small building with the words ‘The Lonely Vampire’ displayed on a worn sign out the front. It looked homely if small, like the rest of this village. But the sign made him wonder just how homely it really was.
“Yes. It is.”
They entered the tavern that still had a dingy yellow light still on. Logan gave a nod to the bar- mistress before going to a booth at the very end of the room.
Quirinus lay Lucy down on the shabby leather seat. She was dozing, her pale face shining. The trio squeezed into the opposite seat; Daniele on the end closest to the window. Her arm brushed against him as she turned to look out at the abandoned street.
The bar-mistress strode over to their booth. She had slick, brown hair that curled around her face that flaunted lips covered in pink lipstick. “Do you want a butterbeer, firewisky?” She asked, raising an eyebrow at them.
“Firewisky.” Logan mumbled.
Quirinus shot a glance at Logan, “This is a magical tavern? Like the Leaky Cauldron?" His answer came from behind him.
“Duh.” The woman had replied.
“I’ll have a butterbeer” He remembered the sleeping Lucy and stony Daniele, “Make that three butterbeers.”
“A room as well.” Logan added.
“Sure.” The woman said pleasantly, fluttering her eyelids at Logan, placing a silver key from a pocket in her skirt onto the table, “I’ll bring up the drinks.” She strutted back to the bar where he could see she was examining herself in the reflection of a bottle as she cleaned up.
Logan got up and placed the key in his pocket, rubbing his eyes. Quirinus got up afterwards and picked up Lucy again, letting her head rest against his shoulder.
“Daniele.” He said. She had to get up to go to the room with them. “Danny.”
At the second name, she looked around and stood up. She hovered near Quirinus, pausing to stroke her sister’s cheek before they head up the old staircase to the room. |
