"Well not quite...no." Oliver though gave him an encouraging smile. He liked that the students weren't afraid to have a guess.

She had fainted during the first seminar because of all the blood talk and, well, having to paint themselves with fake blood, so at least in Ancient Runes it seemed as though the blood talk was all over. And YAY for not painting their runes with it...even if it was creature blood or something.

Now, WHY red? Kurumi glanced around the classroom and thought back to the other carving she had seem, but her mind wandered more on the discussion of the raw materials that were used to make the actual runes. Rock...stone...what was the connection between the two? Or was there one? The prefect scratched the back of her neck in thought and tried to envision red on top of the runes. OH! Wait a second...

Kurumi raised her hand and sort of forgot why she had been so grumpy earlier. "Is it because red is a bold color? Meaning...that it would stand out on the surface of the rune?" Seemed rather practical at least....although it also seemed like a disadvantage as well, if you wanted the rune you were using to perform magic to be kept a secret for example.
Oliver gave his head a small shake. "The red does stand out but so would other colours. The red symbolises the colour of blood. Good try."

Well if blood was the original stain for the runes to properly work. That would mean Red Ochre is best used because it resembles the color of dried blood the most That seemed right.

"You're almost there." Oliver said with a nod of his head.

Where had he heard of that stuff before? The lion tried to remember sometime in his past where he would have used the stuff and then it came to him--his art lessons back at his Muggle school. His professor there was sort of a 'naturalist' artist who only liked to use the most 'pure and untainted' materials.

This might be where Professor Jenkins was going. "Sir, perhaps you would use the ochre paint because it is made from naturally occuring clays rather than stuff that is too processed. This might be more effective for the runes because it is closer to what the ancient creators would have used?" That seemed pretty logical in his book.

If one wishes to keep their runes 'all-natural' it would make sense to use paint material that can be found easily in nature versus one that is synthetic like those found in crafts stores."

"Professor could it be because red ochre paint is usually made out of red clay earth and back into the old days it was thought that red ochre contained live giving properties? Or maybe because red ochre just lasts forever and doesn't fade." Alyssa shrugged, volunteering two possibilities why red ochre was used.

"Thank you Mr Goldstein, Mr Vickers, Miss Potter and Miss Reinhart. Ochre comes from a naturally tinted clay. The pigments in the clay are used to create tints. Because blood was one used to stain the runes, people chose to tint the ochre red so as to keep with the tradition."

Oliver moved to the back of the room to where the wooden archway stood. "Now I noticed some you go a little green at the mention of using blood to stain the runes." He paused for a moment as he ran his hand over the archway. "Personally I prefer the use of blood when staining the runes. And as usual there is a reason for this."

He turned his attention back to the students. "Through all the years that runes have been around both wizards and muggles have used them. So tell me this, if a wizard and a muggle carved a rune into a piece of wood and then used their blood to stain the rune, whose rune would work more effectively? And why?"
