Opening her textbook on chapter two, Sophie started doing the exercise.
Sophie put down her quill and looked around, trying to see her classmates work and see if hers was right. She decided to ask the professor herself. "Professor, did I do it right?" she asked raising her hand. Hearing a small voice asking if her work was correct, Josephina hurried in the direction of the small Hufflepuff. Looking it over, she smiled. "Yes, my dear, you did." Quote:

After rectifying her mistake, Ira looked around on what to do next. "Much better, dear," Fina said as she passed by the young Gryffindor again. Quote:

Woots! She got her life path number.. And it was a magic number 11!
Then she showed both her parchments containing her two calculations to the professor to verify it. And then the girl proceeded to calculate her life path, to which Fina looked it over, shaking her head. "It's correct, yes, but please do try to use PEDMAS next time, in reducing each component to a single digit before you add them together." For one, it's a lot easy to add single digits than trying to add two digit numbers. Quote:

What the heck. Louisa frowned at this. " Tis not true," she murmured to herself. Well, it was shocking to the girl to read her 'heart desires' written on an Arithmancy book and suggesting that she was... not into friendship or love affairs.
Pout. Seeing a pout in the direction of a Ravenclaw, Josephina hurried over to investigate. Hazel eyes scanned the parchment and almost immediately, she discovered a couple of errors. "Two things, dear. In your first name, you missed a vowel." Because Louisa had a lot of vowels in it. "And in your middle name, the Y does act as a vowel, I believe." So in other words, if you're unhappy with your number, it's probably because it's not yours. Quote:

He wrinkled his eyebrows. What about the last bit of his name? The third? He raised his hand. "Professor? I'm technically Alex Greingoth the third, do I add that bit to my name?" he asked. Uggh. Couldn't he just add a 3 to the end of the equation and be done with it? Hearing a question from one of her Hufflepuffs, Fina looked up at Alex and blinked. "Um... well, I don't think the third is really part of your full name, is it? I mean is it on your birth certificate? What do you mean by technically?" Of course it was only two extra numbers in the case of the soul urge number anyway, by adding those two words on .... Quote:

But as for the soul urge... "Your soul urge number is incorrect though. You've mistaken the U for a 2, whereas on the Number System chart, it's actually 3." Quote:

It was when they started with the real practical stuff, that she started to concentrate properly. She listened and watched as the professor demonstrated how to do the calculations, and then she attempted doing the sum. Once she had finished she stared at her partchment for a few moments. o__O "I must have done something wrong." she mumbled to herself quietly, because she didn't agree one bit with what her soul number had to say about her. She was far from being any sort of leader, she didn't expect much of her friends or at least she didn't think she did and as for teams, she didn't mind them at all. Then the last bit kind of hit her...that part was kind of true. She did push many people away all because she wanted to protect herself from repeating the same mistakes. She put her lips into a pot as she thought about her soul number in more detail, and come to think of it, it did, only a bit describe her.
Now onto her next calculation, this was even more confusing as they had to use their birthdates instead of using names or letters, which Nessie somehow found easier. Right, focus, Ness bit her lip, picked up her quil and then began with further calculations. Now this was even worse than before, a frown formed on Nessie's face as she read what her life path was. This number five may have suited her just a little, but she wanted to get the number three, that was her destined fate, to be a dancer or something artistic like that. Thats what she wanted nothing else, and whatever this thing was saying about her she didn't agree with it.
Looking up at the Professor and then back down at her partchment, she lifed up her quill and 'fixed' up her calculations. Text Cut: Nessie's final partchment. Renesmee Talya Dixon

"No one needs to know I was born two days after." Oops..the Professor didn't hear that right? Nope Nessie was sure she didn't.
Now to somehow keep the partchment away from Hadley, Nessie pouted once again and watched the Arithmancy Professor anxiously. Oh good, someone who actually knew how to use PEDMAS. Nodding in satisfaction at the first number calculations, Fina frowned at the girl's Life Path Number. For one, the one she crossed out was incorrect, and two, when she redid it, she changed the day of her birth. "Um... Ness? Your addition is wrong no matter which day you were born on. And please, I'm trusting you to use your correct day of birth and not change it to get a certain life path number. That defeats the purpose of Arithmancy." She gave the redhead a stern look, basically telling her to do it correctly. Quote:

Daichi FROWNED as he read his soul urge number. This was absolutely NOT like him! the Slytherin held his hand in the air as he called for the Professor. Maybe he had done something wrong. "Professor Hadley!" he asked as he waved his hand a little to get her attention before pointing at his number. "I don't think this is right... i don't want to control anyone or am i cold and distant. And i joined the Slytherin Quidditch team in my first and second year so...that part about staying away from teams also can't be true" more frowning before he looked up. Now THIS was more like it. Daichi re-read the answer to his number and felt a smile creeping up on his lips. "This one looks much better, Professor" He said and placed the quill back on the desk and waited for the rest of the class to be done calculating. Hearing someone call her name from across the room, Josephina perked up in shock and hurried over to the young slytherin to hear his dilemma. And as sad as it sounded, "Unfortunately, your calculations are both correct, but I am going to advise you ONCE MORE to use PEDMAS, in reducing each component to a single digit before you add them together." Seriously, she needed to start deducting points for those who DIDN'T use it and still chose to add up those large numbers. Quote:

Once Alyssa had recalculated and found her Soul Urge Number and what it revealed, she raised her hand to show it to the Professor. " Professor, is my Soul Urge Number correct now?" Hearing another request to review her work, Fina strode by the desk of Alyssa again and nodded as she glanced it over. "Much better, dear." Quote:

Finished with her calculation, she now started working on her Soul Urge Number:
She looked over her calculations then showed them to Professor Hadley so that she could double check them. And another student was done. Looking over the girl's work, she nodded in approval. "Perfect." As it should be considering the year of the girl and the fact that this was basic stuff. Quote:

Lily couldn't remember which one was which but she would figure it out. Raising her hand, Lily asked, "Umm, did I do my calculations right? and which one is my soul one, and which one is my life path one?" Lily was definitely confused about which was which and why they used these to predict what they did in life or what day was a good day for them... So all she could do was wait patiently for the teacher to check her work, and maybe explain some of this stuff to the class. Seeing a hand-raise, Fina approached the young Ravenclaw and looked over her work. "The Life path number is the one with your birthday, and yes, that one is correct. The soul urge is the one where you use the vowels in your full name. It's almost correct. You've mistaken the number value for Y in your first name; it should be a 7, not a six." Quote:

But at least she didn't get a number that was completely opposite of what she felt she was like; plus these were not the only two numbers in arithmancy, so if she was lucky maybe she would find a few sevens in her numbers. Passing by another Ravenclaw's desk, Josephina nodded in approval as she checked the girl's work. Quote:

Woah, this was a lot to think about. So how did his soul urge description fit in...? And it was back to the captain again; looking it over as he worked on his life path number, she nodded in approval, as she looked to her prefect next to him who was just finishing up.... Quote:

So, apparently, he stayed away from teams? That was actually funny, considering he had tried out for the Quidditch team. And, truth be told, he didn't expect anything from his friends...so as long as they were there.
Soul Urge Number, we don't agree.
As far as the Life Path stuff...there might be some rightness about it. Yet if he had calculated this at the beginning of the school year, well, this would've been wrong, especially with the 'optimistic' part. Scanning over her prefect's parchment, she nodded at his calculations. They were, of course, good. He'd come quite a ways with the subject and she had to admit that she was proud of him. Quote:

THAT wasn't happening. But then, who was Hadley to say what her full name was? No one knew save for Treyen so........
And what did those mean? Ellie wasn't copying down the meanings onto her paper. That was laborious and unnecessary. That's what the textbook was FOR, no?
So, apparently, she just liked making people happy, according to her 'Soul Urge' number. How ridiculous, right? When did she ever care if someone else was happy about what she did?
A lot, kinda........Or, at least she cared a LOT about getting those seven OWLs for her mum, right? She even went the extra mile and passed eight in hopes of her mum forgiving her lack of Potions OWL.
Anyway..... Ellie flipped a page and looked at her 'Life Path' number. Leadership. Blah, blah, blah, she was Captain, was she not? The girl was beginning to think the number creepily accurate until her gaze fell upon the word 'bookstore'. As a possible career choice.
She had to bite her lip to keep from laughing. And speaking of people who came a long way, Josephina passed by the desk of the Ravenclaw Captain next and looked over her work. "Good, good," she nodded in approval at the girl's calculations. Quote:

Trav stopped shaking his quick, dipped it in the ink well and put it to parchment. He quickly looked up in the textbook both number. First, Life path. Lead... blah blah blah...Money... Blah blah blah... Not an Easy Path... BORING!
He skipped through the pages towards the Soul Urge. One Word hit him before any other... 'Romantic'... "HA!" He laughed loudly, before lowering his head. "Ahem... Sorry" he said almost inaudibly.
Travis Went back over his answers a few times with his quill to make them stand out. That was pretty Simple, right. He didn't really feel like checking them again, so he just started doodling in the corner of his parchment.
Yup, he was gonna draw the Zebra EVER! Hearing a rather loud laugh, Josephina turned in the direction of a young boy and went to look over his calculations... good ... good... oh no, wait... "Um.. Your Life Path Number, you've miscalculated that one. Which is why I recommend you use PEDMAS to reduce each component to a single digit before you add them together. As you did with your soul urge. So yea, check that calculation on your life path and you're good to go." Quote:

" Your path will lead you to understand the interconnectedness of all things. It's a path of universal love that learns compassion and tolerance. Once you've learned this lesson, you'll move on to the next phase - tolerance for all and the importance of caring for each other. Blink blink. That was... a bit contradicting with her soul urge thing. She furrowed her eyebrows. Those two paragraphs were trying to pass her some kind of message. A complicated one at that, too. She put down her quill and continued to move her gaze from one paragraph to the other, trying to grasp the keywords and connecting them together before trying to fit them in her life. Back to Louisa again, who had decided to start work on her life path. This time though, she was correct, to which Josephina nodded at her with approval. Quote:

ooc: Hehe, I totally kept referring to Lockhartian's post to make sense of this Hearing another innocent voice asking her to check her work, Josephina strode over to the young second year and looked over her work. "Your soul urge is technically correct. Except well, your surname is tricky with that Y. I'm not sure I would count it as a vowel." She paused contemplating. "But then your life path... you got almost to the end and then when you went and added up the three components, you've made a small adding mistake..." 8 plus 2 plus 3 did not equal 14, after all. I want to be the bossor at least have some sort of power in the world. It is difficult for me to comprhend the emotions of others and prefer to stick to business over emotional affairs. I want to feel more important in what I perceive to be the real world. In matters of the heart and friendships, I place business over emotional closeness. I should look for a strong capable mate who equals my ambitions. But I'm usually too busy for romance and true friendships. "They're both correct now," Josephina said, passing by a young Hufflepuff's desk. "But you should know that it would probably be easier if you don't write ALL the numbers down for each letter. Just the vowels. This way you wouldn't accidentally add in the wrong number. You can just put a dash or something in place of the number." Just a tidbit. Quote:

Picking up a piece of chalk, Kurumi wrote as neatly as she could in medium sized numbers on the board.
Dusting off her hands and setting the chalk down, Kurumi returned to her seat.
Picking up her quill again, Kurumi began to work on her soul urge number calculations. First things first, writing down her full name. It was times like this that she was pleased Japan didn't have a tradition of giving middle names - although, she was pretty sure Professor Hadley had marked her down during her first term for not using her full name on an assignment when she had in fact done so. Now, it was a matter of whether or not the Y in her name worked as a vowel or not.
Leaning back in her seat a bit, Kurumi whispered her last name without the Y and with it. No, it had to be a vowel. Without it there her name sounded nothing like what it was. Vowels only, remember that. Just to make sure that she didn't make a silly mistake, Kurumi assigned a value of 0 to all the consonants. Visual cues were always helpful.
Kurumi read over the description and nodded every now and again. It seemed to fit...minus beauty being considered something very important to her. Sure, Kurumi did value it to some degree...but it wasn't in the top five things she thought about when she was making a list of her personal values.
Setting her quill down, Kurumi waited for Professor Hadley to double check her work and for whatever came next. "You... still ended up with the correct answer, but you do realize you added the I from Kurumi as part of your last name as well... right? So you got an extra 9 in there..." You know, just an FYI. But since 27 and 36 are both multiples of 9, it made no difference. In this case. Quote:

He tossed his quill to the side for now and looked up to see Kurumi at the blackboard. Can you say.. Hermione Granger incarnate? He smiled a bit anyhow because it was cool how good she was at EVERYTHING. Everything related to academics, at least. Seeing that a certain Paulie Foster had rested his quill to the side, she strode by to have a peek at his parchment, despite him not having raised his hand. She nodded though in approval and then moved on....registering faintly on the fact that he was seated next to a certain Ravenclaw. Quote:

SPOILER!!: Butterfly and those who helped her, Thank you! Quote:

Now for the Soul Urge Number you need to find the numbers that go with the letters of your first, middle, and last name. For example mine is:
M – I – N – E – R – V – A
4 – 9 – 5 – 5 – 9 – 4 – 1
H – E – R – M – I – O – N – E
8 – 5 – 9 – 4 – 9 – 6 – 5 – 5
W – H – E – A – T – B – O – R – N
5 – 8 – 5 – 1 – 2 – 2 – 6 – 9 – 5
Now you will add each number in the names together. So add all the numbers in your first name to get an answer, middle for an answer, and last for a number. You want them to end up in single numbers so if get a sum of 15 for your first name you will then add 1+5 to get a 6. Once you get all the names sums you will add those together. So for mine it is 6+7+3 which ends up 16 then I take 16 and do 1+6 so I can get a single number of 7. Does this make sense at all?" Quote:

39 + 20 = 59
She tired to figure out how she messed up and got such a large number. Quote:

Now, back to investigating the young Slytherin's work, which it seemed as though the two girls had helped her mostly enough out. At least she knew where to get the numbers from. "It's good, yes, but might I suggest if you don't need the numbers for the particular calculation you're doing, then you don't record it. It'll be easier so you don't accidentally add the wrong number." Just a tidbit. "And yes, you should reduce your final answer to a single digit." Quote:

Oakey peered up from the text when he saw that his quill had finished his Life Path Number equation. It had said "One", Oakey dove back into his book and skimmed it until he found what "One" meant for him.
He read the definition to himself and looked over at his quill who had been motionless for a moment. Then it began to scribble down what Oakey had wanted it to.
Right now to get this Soul Urge Number done. Oakey once again drove his face into the text book and started scanning for more information on the stuff that Hadley had described. His Quill working just as hard as Oakey was reading
Oakey looked up once more when his quill laid itself down. It seems the answer was three. He began skimming for it's definition, once he found it the quill got back to work.
His quill rested itself and Oakey waited for the Professor to check his work. He wasn't sure if he should include the Y in his first name, Oakey raised his hand. Professor I wasn't sure if I needed to include the Y in my name? I did as you said because your name ends in E-Y like mine, but it doesn't seem right. Hearing another question, Josephina looked over to Oakey and shook her head. "You did it correctly. I don't believe the Y is a vowel in your name, because of that E that's next to it." Quote:

When Professor Hadley told them to start calculating for the said numbers. She immediately pulled out a parchment from her backpack. Then she dipped the quill in the inkwell as she started writing the equivalents of the letters and numbers first.
That way, she wouldn't have any errors when finding the equivalent number to the letters. She shuffled in her seat as she took out another piece of parchment. She'll start calculating the her Soul Urge and Life Path now.
She stared at the parchment for a second. She was not the type who would review their work afterwards. She didn't want to read everything again and again so she decided to just ask the Professor if she calculated her Soul Urge and Life Path numbers correctly. "Professor, excuse me..Can you please take a look at my parchment?" she asked after raising her hand. She'd be looking up the meaning of the number a bit while later. Hearing another request to look over her parchment, Josephina went over toward the young ravenclaw and glanced it over. Almost about to say it looked fine, she frowned. "No... your middle name ... in your soul urge number. You've made a minor calculating error there." So in other words, her soul urge number was wrong. "Otherwise, it's good." Quote:

One...that sounded like it might be interesting, though one could never tell with numbers in arithmacy. Turning to the meanings in the textbook pages, he looked up the signifignance of 1 for Life path and copied it down as well. At least it was a more positive answer but Gideon still wasn't sure how accurate it was to him. Again, though Gideon hadn't asked for her to look over his parchment, Josephina went by his desk and looked anyway. And nodded when she noticed it was fine, thus moving onto the next... Quote:

He glanced back and forth to the text book as he began his calculations. It was as if the boy was in some sort of weird number trance and couldn't stop his quill.
After he was done with his soul number calculations he began with the second part.
He glanced back and forth to the text book as he began his second calculations. It was as if the boy was in some sort of weird number trance and couldn't stop his quill. She frowned when she reached the desk of the Slytherin prefect, shaking her head. "No. Your last name... the A ... on the chart, A is a 1, not a 7." That was actually the case on MANY number systems, not just the Pythagorean. So obviously, his soul urge number was wrong. But the life path number was fine though. Quote:

March 17, 2062
03 + 17 + 2062
3 + 8 + 10
3 + 8 + 1 = 12
1 + 2 = 3
Sierra flipped through her texbook, curious as to what the number three would tell her. Text Cut: Three
THREE (3): Your path will entice you to be both spontaneous and creative, to live your life with joy and imagination. You will learn the benefits of optimism and enthusiasm, and how to express your emotions and exuberance. Once you've mastered these concepts, you'll move on to the next phase - inspiring others. You're a born communicator and your wit and lightheartedness will help others see the joy in any situation. Artistic, creative, and articulate are words to describe someone with a 3 Life Path. Career/vocation options should relate to anything artistic - writing, speaking, designing, illustrating, dancing, etc.
Inspiring others?! Who really cared how others felt?! ...and dancing?! Wow. What a number. O_o
With a slight frown toward her textbook, Sierra moved on to her Soul Urge Number: Soul Urge Number:
Sierra Hope Greingoth
I E A
9 + 5 + 1 = 15
1 + 5 = 6
O E
6 + 5 = 11
1 + 1 = 2
E I O
5 + 9 + 6 = 20
2 + 0 = 2
6 + 2 + 2 = 10
1 + 0 = 1
Leading? Controlling? Now this was more like it! Pleased with those results, she grinned, looked up, and waiting for the lesson to move along. Walking by Sierra's desk next, as Fina noticed the girl had stopped writing, she glanced over the girl's parchment and nodded when everything seemed to check out alright and then moved onto to the next... =7 She nodded in approval at the girl's life path number and then gazed around the classroom for any others who were finishing up. All good, it seemed. Which meant it was time to move on from the core numbers and onto the rest of the lesson. "Now that we've had that good review of half of your core numbers, which as I mentioned before, they're important to your personal day numbers, because it is when these numbers match your personal day number that you'll feel a stronger connection to those days..." "In order to find this personal Day number, you'll need to calculate your personal month number. Which in order to calculate that, you'll need to calculate your personal year number. For right now, I'd like you to review either independently or quietly with someone nearby about the calculations for these three numbers, which are discussed in chapters 18-20 of your text." She paused. "We'll reconvene in ten minutes." ooc: I'll continue the lesson sometime tomorrow evening, hopefully about 7/8pm EST. In the meantime, if you'd like to actually attempt to calculate these numbers, assume the date in the RP is October 17, 2076. If Hadley made corrections to your soul urge/life path numbers, you're welcome to go back and fix them. Thank you <3.
