Hogwarts RPG Name: Megara Kostas First Year | Chapter Nineteen – Dates and Surprises 24th July 1978
After a week of exchanging letters and brief meetings, (Severus usually kicked her out after a few minutes, Lucius was 'his friend' apparently...), it was finally the day of Izabella and Lucius' date. If it was a date. Izabella had been debating that all week.
She had woken early, yet was somehow still running late. The doorbell rang and she gave up, ruffling her hair slightly before grabbing her bag, racing down the stairs and pulling open the door.
“Woah!” she exclaimed as she was engulfed by the figure on the step. She caught sight, and a mouthful, of red hair and pulled back from the hug. “Lily!”
“Of course it's me!” her best friend squealed, pulling her into another embrace.
“What are you doing here?”
“I've just got back, obviously, and came straight to see you.”
“That's great... And you're all here.” she said, plastering a smile onto her face as she spotted James, Sirius, Remus and Peter. “Well... come on in then.”
The newlyweds and their friends piled past her and into the living room, Izabella heading for the kitchen before Sirius even crossed the threshold. She waved her wand at the mugs and the kettle as she bit her lip nervously. Her eyes kept darting towards the front door as she stirred the coffee. She carried the tray into the living room and placed it on the table, hovering by the window.
“Were you going out somewhere?” Lily asked, gesturing to the bag which was still thrown over Izabella's shoulder.
“To see you of course.” Izabella lied, taking a seat next to her best friend and listening to her stories whilst keeping one ear trained on the front door.
Suddenly the doorbell echoed throughout the house and Izabella jumped up, racing out of the living room and slamming the door shut behind her. She pulled back the front door and fell into Lucius' arms, wrapping her hands around his neck.
“I'll be late more often if this is the welcome I get.” he chuckled, squeezing her waist gently.
“I'm sorry, I'm really, really sorry.”
“Izabella what's happened? Are you okay?” he asked, frowning.
“I'm fine. It's just, I can't make it today.”
“Oh...”
“I'm sorry Lucius. Lily got back from her honeymoon today and I totally forgot and now everyone is sitting in my house talking about beaches and waiters and I feel truly awful-”
“Izabella it's fine.”
“It is?”
“Of course. You spend some time with your friends and we'll go out on another day. Tomorrow if you're free.”
“Yes, I'm free. Tomorrow would be great.” she said beaming.
“Right well, same time tomorrow then.” he smiled. Izabella reached up and kissed his cheek briefly before smiling widely once more, saying goodbye and returning to the living room.
“Who was that?” Lily asked.
“Who?” Izabella said, smiling as she took her seat again, feeling much brighter than before.
“At the door?” said Lily, rolling her eyes.
“Oh, it was someone for Severus.” she said, waving her hand absentmindedly. “So, the fish restaurant?”
“I want to hear what you've been up to.” Lily said with a grin.
“What do you mean?” Izabella asked self-consciously.
“Just because you don't speak to us anymore, doesn't mean we don't know what you're up to.” Sirius said moodily.
“Shut up Sirius. I've been busy.”
“We know.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
Sirius just shook his head, but before Izabella could respond, Remus passed the newspaper he was reading.
“Page 7.” he said quietly.
“The social pages? Why would... Oh.”
Izabella stopped as she caught sight of the moving picture that was dominating the page. A young girl with dark hair and a green chiffon dress stood in the tight embrace of Lucius Malfoy. They stared into each other's eyes for a moment then she laughed and hit his arm playfully, looking very comfortable together under the flashing headline; “The Manor needs a Lady.”
“How did you even get in to a Malfoy party?” James asked as he read the article over her shoulder. Izabella rolled her eyes.
“I am a Pureblood. Anyway, I told you my mother is friendly with them.”
“Apparently it's not just your mother.” Sirius grumbled.
“Oh shut up Sirius.”
“They are very exclusive parties Izabella...” Remus said gently.
“Not as exclusive as Lucius Malfoy. He never dances with anybody.” Sirius interjected.
“You seem to know all of this pretty well Sirius. Have you been studying the social pages?” she teased.
“No! I was born into all of this remember? I didn't have to buy my way in.”
“Yes Sirius, because I could clearly buy the Malfoys affections.” she said sarcastically, gesturing to the modest building that housed them.
“Can you two stop arguing for one minute?” Lily said with a sigh. Izabella folded her arms sulkily, ignoring the glares Sirius threw at her.
“So are you ready for school Izabella?” Remus asked at an obvious attempt to change the subject. Izabella groaned.
“Please do not remind me that whilst you are all buying houses and getting jobs I will be stuck in a classroom.”
“Oh yes, aren't we the lucky ones.” Sirius said jokingly. Izabella opened her mouth to retort but Lily quickly pulled out photographs to distract the arguing pair.
By nightfall, it was just like old times. The group sat outside on the grass of the small garden, the remains of their picnic scattered around them amongst the pictures and memories.
Lily lay on James' chest with her feet in Izabella's lap, whilst Izabella avoided the stare Sirius was sending her from across the blanket.
They sat looking up at the stars, their laughter ringing throughout the night air and making Izabella hate change more than ever.
