He was about to leave when he found a woman blocking his path, her arms outstretched so that he couldn’t get by. Her long wavy red hair bounced around her shoulders gently as she descended the last few steps to the kitchen, Severus took a few steps back. He could have said something, he could have smiled... but he didn’t. A pain so intense reverberated in his chest, and he knew he deserved it. After everything he had put her through, after everything he had said to hurt her... she deserved better than him, but that wasn’t to say she didn’t deserve better than Potter.

“In a hurry?” asked Lily, her vibrant green eyes penetrating him down to his very core, to his soul- or at least what was left of it.
“Yes,” was all he could manage to say.
After a moment of standing there, gazing into her eyes, he urged his feet forward, hurrying past her and up the stairs through to the drawing room.
He stopped briefly, to catch his breath, fearful that he might pass out if he deprived himself of oxygen any longer. Even after years of holding his breath around her, he could still remember her sweet scent, the intoxicating fumes of honey and mixed berries with a hint of spicy cinnamon ... heaven.
Shaking his head furiously Severus clenched his jaw, You need to forget her, he thought to himself as he continued moving through the drawing room to the small entrance hall.
Inhaling a deep breath, and shutting his eyes as if welcoming an eternal sleep, Severus turned on the spot, a sound like a whip cracking rang through the hallway as he disapparated.
