After sitting, stunned for a few minutes, Ellouise glanced at the cut on her finger. The folds of skin parted, leaving a gapping slit. The cool air stung, she would deal with it later... right now she had more interesting things to consider. Mustering up all the courage she had, she turned her gaze to the contents of the box, the mysterious Browne Family box. Her heart sank as she saw the two items sitting in the bottom of the box. There was an old fashioned, ornate silver key with similar engraving as the box itself, and a necklace. Picking up the necklace Ellouise held it up to the light, examining it in great detail. The short silver chain was fine and delicate, but strong... she pulled on it gently, testing its strength. No doubt it was made of goblin silver. It was still shiny and clean, as if it were brand new. The large deep blue sapphire hung like a teardrop from the silver chain. “SpeRevelio,” cited Ellouise as she flicked her wand over the two objects. Why they would be cursed she had no idea, but if she had learnt anything in the last seven years under her parents care... it was trust nothing and trust no one, within reason of course. They were safe.
Unfastening the necklace, Ellouise rose from the bed and seated herself in front of her dressing table mirror instead. Was it a family heirloom? Had it belonged to her mother? Her grandmother? A great-great grandmother?
After fasting the clip around her neck Ellouise let her hair flow over her shoulders, brushing them back gently so that she could see the necklace properly. It looked good on her. Something about it completed her. She felt whole, as if a part of her had been missing and was now returned. Snapping back to reality Ellouise checked her alarm clock. There was still time to do something productive, even if the box hadn’t provided her with anything particularly useful.
“At least I know your dirty little secret,” she murmured to it as she placed the key back in the bottom of the box and adding some other personal items including the photographs she had salvaged from Godrics Hollow. It was the Browne Family Box for a reason, because only Browne blood could open it. Old magic, why hadn’t she thought of it sooner?
Setting the box down on her dressing table and collecting one of her spell books Ellouise decided to head up to the attic and get some target practice in. She needed to stay active and on her toes.
