Aside from the small key hole on the front of the box, there was nothing to suggest that it could be opened, nor that there was something inside. Growing frustrated after minutes of struggling with the object Ellouise dumped it on her covers and lay her head back on her pillow.
“I... need to get in”, she murmured to herself as she attempted to pry the box open with her fingers yet again. She directed a glare at the box, the light emphasising its grooves and patterns.
“You’re enchanted”, mused Ellouise, talking to the inanimate object as if she was grooming a potential suspect for an interrogation. The box didn’t reply.
Whipping out her wand once more Ellouise tried every spell and hex and curse she could think of the open the sealed box, she all but blew it up- that would get her nowhere. She was beginning to get the impression that there was more to the box than she had first thought. Whatever it was, it was sophisticated. Resigning from the task temporarily Ellouise approached her dressing table, pulling the draws out as far as they could go. She didn’t have many belongings, after being on the run for so many years she had learned to live without personal artefacts, toys and jewellery... none of that mattered when your life was on the line. Still, she hoped she could find what she was looking for.
Rummaging through the contents of the draws Ellouise flipped through photographs and old letters, sifted through notebooks, diaries and shabby deck of tarot cards. At last, after putting aside an old broken pocket watch, Ellouise found it. The one thing that gave her hope. Clutching the small ring holding a modest collection of what appeared to be at least thirty keys, Ellouise returned to her bed, where she examined the key hole, hoping that one of those keys would be a match.

Hands shaking with anticipation Ellouise tried key after key, desperately cramming each one into the small slot in the side of the decorated box, but to no avail. It was a lost cause, not even a single one came close enough to revealing the contents, the secrets of the Browne Family box.
“Merlin!” yelled Ellouise throwing down the keys in a huff of fury. In her haste she dropped the box as well, her fingertip catching on the sleek, sharp edge of the engraving on the box’s surface before it clattered loudly to the floor. Ellouise winced as the pain cut through her, the blood dripped from her finger, splattering on her sheets. Reaching down the side of the bed Ellouise pulled the box back up beside her before sucking the blood from the tip of her finger in an effort to stem the flow. It wasn’t too bad, just a minor cut, nothing she couldn’t handle. But it was just like her, to be careless, to be clumsy. Directing her gaze back to the Browne Family box Ellouise went to examine the damage she had done- if there had been any damage at all. What she found, was that the small curious box had... opened.
