As the morning sun rose, Izabella blinked open her eyes and stretched. As she lifted her hands to rub the sleep out of her eyes she froze, staring at her right hand and the finger where the sapphire ring should have been. The night before came speeding back and her insides became cold. She bit her lip and tears sprung to her eyes. With a sigh she ran her hands through her hair and decided to get up and go and find Sirius.
There was a gentle knock at the door and Izabella turned her head slightly. They knocked louder but Izabella suddenly felt distant and miserable. She sighed, rolling over in her bed and turning her back on the door. Curling up into a tight ball she squeezed her eyes shut and drifted off to sleep again.
When she woke again, the light which filled her room was brighter and she sat up quickly, looking at the clock. Half past twelve.
“Oh crap.” she cursed as she rolled out of bed, grabbing her wand and lifting it to her head so that her face was framed by poker-straight hair. She rushed to the wardrobe and flicked through the robes, pulling out her plain black ones and quickly running through a short apology for Sirius in her head.
She stopped suddenly and turned back to stare at the clothes hanging in the closet. Smiling smugly, she replaced the plain robes and pulled out the dress she had not worn in years. With a victorious grin, she tore off her pyjamas and slipped into the dress.
Looking in the mirror, Izabella saw a women in a long black dress with red detail on the left hip, above the slit which revealed some of her thigh when she walked. The dress was long sleeved and tight-fitting but exposed some of her back, showing her curves and slim frame and the round neck came low across her chest. Izabella tilted her head to one side and nodded slightly, then reached to the desk and leant closer to the mirror as she applied red lipstick carefully. A few squirts of perfume and she was ready. Picking up her wand and throwing a travelling cloak over her arm, Izabella left her room and headed downstairs.
As she entered the kitchen she smiled slightly as Ron's mouth dropped open, causing him to spill his lunch down the front of his jumper and Hermione to smack his arm, the twins raised their eyebrows, and Charlie blushed slightly and turned his gaze away from her.
“Afternoon,” she said as she casually walked over to Lupin who was stood by the sink, a mug of tea in his hand.
“Good afternoon.” he said inclining his head slightly and watching her curiously. She picked up an apple and took a bite daintily.
“Harry told me.” Lupin said quietly, leaning towards her.
“Told you what?” she said, turning her back to him to fill her glass with water and taking a sip.
“That you and Sirius had a fight.”
Izabella took another sip, swallowing hard and begging the tears not to fall. Then she turned back to Lupin and nodded slightly.
“So?”
“So, it was a bit harsh to give him the ring back.” he said gently.
“Well you would be on his side.” she snapped.
“I'm not on anyone's side.” He looked down into her eyes and she sighed, mumbling an apology.
“Don't be too harsh on him Izabella. He loves you.”
“He has a funny way of showing it.”
“So do you. You tried this jealousy thing before and it didn't work. What makes you think it will work now?” he said, gesturing to her dress. She frowned in annoyance.
“I'm not trying to make him jealous.” she said stubbornly.
“So it's a coincidence that he told you he doesn't want you around Malfoy-”
“How much did Harry hear?” she asked, concerned.
“Sirius told me that part.”
Izabella looked at him for a moment, then raised an eyebrow and laughed coldly.
“Well at least he talks to someone about how he feels.” she said spitefully.
“Izabella...” Lupin sighed.
“I know,” she said in a quiet voice, looking down and biting her lip gently. “I don't mean to fight with him but...”
At that moment, Sirius walked into the kitchen and she stopped suddenly. A flash of pain crossed his face as he spotted Izabella but it was gone as quickly as it came. He strolled over to the sink and glanced at Izabella, but she had turned her gaze away from him, her face tense and her body stiffened.
“I'm going to be late. See you later Remus.” she said her voice different and cold, pulling the travelling cloak around her shoulders and hurrying from the kitchen, touching Harry's shoulder gently before she left.
Once she was outside Grimauld Place Izabella took a deep breath and turned to look longingly at the door for a moment. She groaned inwardly and went to push the door back open, to run into Sirius' arms and... Her face became cold. No. He could apologise to her. Then she closed her eyes, her face becoming blank, and turned on the spot.
She landed outside the gates of Malfoy Manor and hesitated for a moment, not sure if she could pass without Snape or a Dark Mark but as she tentatively took a step forward she found she could walk through the iron gates as if they were air.
She marched up the pathway and knocked on the door, which was pulled back immediatley. Snape stood in the door way, glaring down at her.
“You're late.” he said as she entered the Manor which was filled with people.
“I'm not that late.” she said rolling her eyes. She slid the cloak off her shoulders and whipped it off. There was a hush in the expansive hall and the figures turned to look at her.
“You'll catch a cold in that.” Snape said, pursing his lips as he surveyed her.
“Don't be so cruel Severus.” Lucius said from the crowd behind Izabella. She turned.
“Lucius.” she said, smiling as he approached her.
“Izabella.” he said, taking her hand and kissing it gently. She gasped quietly as a shock shooted up her arm, originating at his touch. He looked into her eyes and she disregarded it. “You look beautiful.” he whispered. She grinned and turned to face the others in the room, nodding in acknowledgement.
“The Dark Lord wants to see you. Alone.” Snape said, looking deep into her eyes. Izabella nodded slightly and handed him her cloak. As she walked towards the drawing room, the crowd parted slightly and people watched her. A man who reeked of fire whiskey winked at her suggestively and she had to grimace to cover her repulsed expression. She knocked once on the large wooden door then entered the gloomy room, shuting the door quietly behind her.
“Ah Izabella.” said Voldemort, moving towards her swiftly. “I was beginning to think you weren't coming.”
“I'm sorry my Lord. I overslept.” she said apologetically, lowering her head.
He stepped towards her and placed a long finger underneath her chin, lifting her eyes to his.
“Where is Sirius Black?”
“I don't know my Lord.” she said calmly. He continued to look deep into her dark eyes.
“I don't want to hurt you Izabella.” he said, his voice dangerous.
“I don't know where he is my Lord.” she repeated. He nodded slightly and moved away from her, gliding about the room.
“Lucius told me...” he stopped and watched her curiously as she laughed under her breath.
“I'm sorry my Lord, but I thought this may be about my... conversation with Lucius.” she said, smiling slightly. He gestured for her to continue.
“Well, he has become a little infatuated with me my Lord-”
“I don't blame him.” Voldemort said, inclining his head slightly as he examined her from head to toe, an appraising look on his face.
“Thank you my Lord.” she said curtseying low. “But I couldn't do that to Narcissa... or poor Draco. So I needed to say something to him, something that would hurt his feelings a little. Or at least his ego.” she explained. Voldemort nodded, his expression thoughtful and took a place in the seat at the top of the table.
“So you do not love Sirius Black?”
“No.”
The word fell easily out of her mouth, but for a second she had hesitated.
“Do you love Lucius?” Voldemort asked, examining his hands as if he wasn't interested in her answer. Or like he already knew what it would be.
Izabella paused and looked down at her hands.
“I'm not sure.” she said honestly. Voldemort sighed.
“You two could have been so good for each other.” he said sadly. Izabella smiled slightly.
“I have something for you.” he said after a short silence, picking up a velvet box from the table in front of him. He walked over to her and handed her the box. Opening it, Izabella gasped as she looked down at the necklace that lay on the silk inside. Voldemort watched her closely, a small smile playing around his lips.
“It's beautiful my Lord!” she said gratefully.
“A little something for all of your hard work.” he said. His hands reached up to her neck and held the lily pendant in his fingers. “What's this?”
Izabella cursed herself silently for forgetting to remove it.
“My Christmas present from Severus.” she said.
“Indeed.” he said quietly as he stared at the pendant around her neck. Izabella swallowed and tensed slightly. He knows what it is, she thought as he looked at it interestedly. Suddenly he yanked at the necklace and the chain snapped, falling into his hands. He handed it to her and she slipped it into her pocket quickly.
He moved around behind her and placed his necklace around her throat majestically. Izabella caught sight of herself in the mirror that lined the wall and her hand stroked the piece of jewellery in amazement. It was hefty and thick, covering a large area of her bare chest, the cold metal lying heavy on her heart. The gold threads were weaved together intricately and the thousands of emeralds sparkled gloriously, glinting in the candle light.
“Thank you my Lord.” she said quietly. His lips curled into a smile then he motioned for her to sit. He joined her at the table and pressed his wand to his throat.
“Come and join us.” Voldemort's voice was amplified, echoing around the Manor.
Warily, the door opened and the Death Eaters made their way into the room, taking their places at the table. She noticed Narcissa and Bellatrix's absence and frowned slightly as Lucius took his place beside her.
“They have taken Draco out for the day.” he explained, seeing the questioning look on her face. She nodded slightly, feeling Voldemort's eyes on her. Snape rushed into the room, looking to Izabella for any sign of injury but instead he frowned at the gold hanging around her neck. Flashing him a I-will-tell-you-later look, she turned to Voldemort expectantly.
“Wormtail.” he called harshly and the small man came scurrying into the room quickly. Izabella smiled in satisfaction at the scrapes and bruises that covered his flesh. He flashed Izabella a frightened look then turned to Voldemort.
“Fetch Avery.”
“Yes my Lord!” Wormtail said eagerly, rushing from the room and returning soon after, dragging a dirty, weak man.
“Leave.” Voldemort said coldly and Wormtail bowed his way out of the room. Voldemort stood up and moved about the room as Avery collapsed on the floor, breathing heavily.
“This pathetic scum gave Lord Voldmort the wrong information.” came the high-pitched, cruel voice as he circled his victim. Avery whimpered on the floor and Izabella shifted umcomfortably. Lucius glanced at her and seeing her discomfort, placed a hand on her thigh beneath the table. Izabella didn't protest, in fact, as Voldemort sent a curse at Avery causing him to scream in pain, her hand dived to his and she interlaced their fingers together, squeezing his hand tightly. She stared at the table and kept tight hold of Lucius' hand until Voldemort had finished the punishment.
“Take him away.” he ordered two Death Eaters who stood up immediately and carried an unconcious Avery from the room. Izabella relaxed slightly and loosened her grip on Lucius' hand but he didn't let go. Turning his head towards her, he smiled slightly and she rolled her eyes, concealing a grin.
Voldemort returned to his seat and looked about the Death Eaters.
“Lets hope I have not received wrong information from anyone else.” he said in a dangerous voice. The Death Eaters tensed for a moment then he waved his hand slightly, dismissing them. The room emptied and Lucius freed Izabella's hand.
“Thank you again for the wonderful gift my Lord.” she said appreciatively, bowing her head low. He curled his lip in a smile.
“You're welcome. I shall see you soon Izabella.”
“My Lord.” she said, curtseying once more then following Snape and Lucius out of the room.
By the front door, Lucius retrieved Izabella's cloak from the stand and wrapped it around her shoulders gently, brushing his fingers against the bare skin of her back softly.
“I'll see you soon.” he whispered in her ear, grazing his lips against her cheek and making her shiver slightly.
“Goodbye Lucius.” she said, a small smile teasing at the edge of her red lips as she looked at him from under her long eyelashes. He beamed then looked to Snape.
“Severus.”
Snape inclined his head then placed a hand on Izabella's and pushed her out of the Manor. She lifted her hood up over her head as light rain began to fall on them and hurried down the path and through the gates. Snape stopped her suddenly, his hand on her arm.
“I hope you know what you're doing.” he said, his eyes concerned.
Izabella laughed slightly.
“Of course I do.”
“Be careful Iz.” he said with a sigh.
She looked up at him for a moment then reached up and kissed his cheek.
“Thanks Sev.” she said quietly.
He held her chin in between his fingers for a moment and a flicker of a smile crossed his face. His hands travelled to the necklace and he narrowed his eyes slightly as he traced the emeralds beneath his fingers. He looked up at her and nodded slightly.
“I'll see you soon.” he said, pulling his cloak tighter around him before he turned on the spot and disapparated.
Izabella watched him leave, then pulled out the broken silver necklace from her pocket. She held it up in front of her and tapped it with her wand, smiling as the chain resealed itself.
Returning it back to her pocket and placing a hand on the rather more expensive necklace that dangled from her neck, she looked back up at the Manor. A blonde figure watched her intently from the large windows and she smiled slightly before glancing around the deserted street and disapparating.
