Kurumi had been hospitalized for a week due to internal injuries and even after being dispatched from the hospital had to remain in bed for another week or else risk some of her injuries reopening. Charles was furious that Yukie wouldn’t allow him to take Kurumi to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries where her injuries could be cured instantly.
“You would rather risk our daughter dying because of your limited muggle medicine?”
“Don’t ever say that word in this house!” Yukie shouted throwing her wet sponge into the sink along with the rest of the dishes. “You make it sound like I don’t care about what happens to her.”
“Hard to think otherwise when you refuse to let in half of who she is,” he snapped back folding his arms across his chest. “You can’t keep lying to her forever. Kurumi is a witch, all of our children are. Ryunosuke and Takashi have already been attending Hogwarts for a few years and Junichiro will be receiving his owl soon,” he paused and wrapped his arms around his wife’s trembling body. “You need to accept this part of our children, just as you accepted me.”
Yukie turned and faced him with her eyes on fire with furry. “That was before I knew about how your family felt about people like me. What if our children think the same way? That wizards are so much better than normal people like me? What if they try and do the same thing to me that your family did?”
She lifted up the right side of her white wool sweater to reveal a large scar that ran all the way across her stomach. Charles turned his eyes away for a moment, but Yukie grabbed his face and made him look at it.
“This is what magic can do,” she snapped throwing her sweater back over her stomach. “You…you…you even had to go as far as too…”
Charles wrapped her up in another tight embrace.
“Yukie, listen to me, our children will grow up to be fine witches and wizards…”
“Not in this house,” she said pushing him away. “In this house they will grow up to be fine men and women. I do not want to talk about it anymore, please.”
Charles looked as his wife as she hunched her back over the sink and broke down into tears. Perhaps it had been wrong for him to marry her. Perhaps it was unfair that he forced this entirely new world onto her and expected her to be able to accept it.
“Alright Yukie, I understand,” he said rubbing her back.
The next morning, Yukie went to check on Kurumi and found her daughter sitting up still wrapped up tightly in her blankets looking out the window.
“Kurumi, you should be lying down,” she exclaimed setting the tray of rice soup and apple juice on a small table and rushing over to her. “You need to rest.”
Kurumi nodded and slowly lied back down, wincing her and there because of the pain in her side. “Mother,” she whimpered. “Why does everyone hate me? They all say that I am different…”
Yukie frowned and sat down beside Kurumi and stroked her hair softly with her fingers. “Well, you are,” she said simply.
“Why?”
The words stung Yukie like an arrow straight through the heart. “People are always afraid of what is different from them,” she said turning her eyes away from Kurumi in attempt to hide her tears. “Kurumi…you…you…you’re…”
Kurumi reached out and squeezed her mother’s hand gently. Yukie turned her gaze back to her daughter who was looking up at her with a gentle violet gaze. Yukie covered her mouth and shut her eyes tight as the tears she had been repressing could no longer remain hidden. She just couldn’t bring herself to say the word, not to Kurumi, not to herself.
“It’s alright mother,” Kurumi said putting on a brave smile. “I’ll try to fit in like everyone else, just for you.”
Yukie hugged her daughter as tightly as she could without putting her injuries at risk. No, not her baby. Kurumi was going to be free of the curse.
